      I don't know if you've read the later Golden Age Dr Fate stories but all mystery is removed and he becomes the most worthless character imaginable. Sometimes, Fate almost appears to be weaker than the average man and is constantly cracking terrible jokes. By the end he's not only lost half his helmet but also his cape, his shoulder pads and his dignity. The crazy thing is that it was the same writer and artist throughout.

    • @miked5814

      @@DCSilverAgeStorytime I have read some of them but, yes, I think they tried to make him like other superheroes in that time and it ruined him. I believe it was probably an editor's decision and those almost never go right. But I haven't read that many from later on.

    • @DCSilverAgeStorytime
      @DCSilverAgeStorytime 8 часов назад

      I would bet money that it was an editorial decision. In fact, what we saw might have been Gardner Fox puposely sabotaging the character in protest. Supposedly, Mike Grell purposely made Tyroc of the Legion of Super-Heroes look ridiculous as a protest over the way the character was treated. He correctly felt that the backstory for Tyroc was extremely racist. I don't know that Fox was attempting to ruin the character but I feel that Fox was too talented of a writer to produce such terrible writing. I'll bet the later Fate stories are even worse than you remember. I honestly look forward to getting to them just to rip on them.

  • @miked5814
    @miked5814 12 часов назад

    I actually liked when we didn't know who Doctor Fate was and there was an air of mystery about him more than having him remove the helmet and giving him a name and everything. I might be in the minority on that, but I just think, especially with Dr Fate, there should be that mystery about him. It goes with the character. In my opinion, he's supposed to be a mysterious character.

    • @DCSilverAgeStorytime
      @DCSilverAgeStorytime 11 часов назад

      I think that for the sake of the longevity of the character they needed to somewhat humanize him. These 6 page stories are fun but once they get to 10 pages it's really hard to have him as this emotionless being. What I didn't like was how Inza went from being a valuable partner to just another useless love interest. Unfortunately, as the Golden Age series progressed, Dr Fate became a complete joke. We will be getting to those terrible stories eventually and I don't hold back my opinions in the videos.

    I'm a major Superman fan but I have to say in this story he comes off like a major dick. Supergirl finds a couple that are willing to take on the risk of danger and welcome her into their family and Earth gains another full time protector just to have Superman undo it all so he can have his "secret" weapon at his disposal. So the couple are still childless and Supergirl is stuck back at the orphanage.

      Correct. There is actually a lot of discussion online on how this could possibly work. For instance, how could he use his super strength without invulnerability and not break all his bones. I think the answer is that the writers didn't really think it through.

    Alaktor apparently can't count. On the cover, he says there are 18 members. At this point, there were 20 members.

      That is far from his biggest mistake in this story. Wait until part II.

    God,these stories are so simplistically silly they border on lunacy.

      It definitely doesn't have the lighthearted fun that I enjoy in a Silver Age story. I'd rank this one low among SA tales.

    Just think that Propi was still alive leading the Super Pets? This story was on the back burner for a few years.

      I think it was bad writing to kill Proty or, quite frankly, to have him (it?) commit suicide.

    This was Krypto's first "contemporary" Legion adventure as the rest happened when he was Superboy's pet several years before hand...

      It all gets very complicated. I did a recent video where I suggested that the writers would have to keep Superboy and Supergirl separate in the 30th century because of the continuity problems but I've now gotten to stories where the two are working together. Sometimes you just have to forget continuity and go with it.

    And after Superman got his parents together, he went "Back to the Future". That sounds familiar. I wonder if Robert Zemekis was a Superman fan.

      Actually, I've read a LOT of stories recently that remind me of ideas used in movies and television from decades later. I know that George Lucas was supposedly inspired by Disney's Uncle Scrooge when he created Indiana Jones.

      Thank you so much. I hope I'm improving on my reading. I feel like I'm settling into a rhythm whereas early on I was just trying whatever. Eventually, I may actually redo some of my earlier videos that I think were a bit rough.

    You can almost always spot the villain in these stories by the way they are drawn.

    There are some Substitute Legionnaires in the foreground of the last panel. And this is a rare interaction between an adult Superman and teenage Legionnaires.

      That's a really good observation. It didn't even occur to me that it was Superman with the Legion. If I had noticed it I definitely would have mentioned it. Thank you
