- Опубликовано: 9 мар 2011
- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform "Straight Into Darkness" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

May I add: I believe this song is highly overlooked and its mystical magnetism is awesome and dark........man's salvation is love..........
mike Campbell is one of the best and underrated artists ever.
"One of the best" I agree, but under rated ? I think that people who know his work respect him greatly. Why else would Fleetwood Mac choose him to replace Lindsey Buckingham ? Perhaps "under recognized" would be a more appropriate term.
You'll never get rich if you're a shredder. Mike never wastes a single note.
defenetly the best
Tom Petty didnt think that.
@@michaszafarz9877 How so? They were partners for 40 years.
One of the greatest rock-and-rollers ever. Period. God, I miss him.
No truer words have been said.
I miss him too x
I agree. Those that down voted this song need a visit with their dads behind the woodshed...
Amen brother I've said all i can say it bites i kept thinking just last night bostons ferry baseball feild show man why? TOM ?????
I know right,,, it's strange how ya know you don't know him but enough of that thing you don't know him but the first record came out when I had got good enough to play with a good loco band play party's along with your gonna get it then right when dam the torpedos I got my broke in two for the first time of coarse that was the one I listened for days learned everything off it I could play n sing them songs real good that were healing a important loss of sadness so he became my hero man it felt like you knew him he was a.mazing singer songwriter stage pres ents like big 🤩 time yes I kept saying why tom why him ???? I miss him too thanks for the music of them all.
I don't know what it is about this song, no matter how many times I hear it I feel like I could just close my eyes and fly away.
ABOUT A LOVE AFFAIR GOING STRAIGHT INTO DARKNESS, LOST FEELINGS OF LOVE FOR HIS WOMAN.
Does the same to me...song of strength no matter how bad others treat you
I totally agree.
Ppp0
These live videos are waaay better than the mtv videos .
Mike Campbell really knows how to create an atmosphere with his solos
Perfect spacing on his playing
Another underrated song from the great Tom Petty. Love this album.
I’ll miss you for the rest of my days. 💔
sarahzentexas it hurts like I lost a brother! Everynight I spend 3-4 hours listening to anything I can find of his on youtube. The tears come on like a faucet.
@@bikeluversusie2522 I can completely relate...some losses are just too overwhelming...
Me too
Missed, Yet Not Fogotten. "The Strong "Carry On"...
It's my favorite song by them. This live performance kicked ass. I wish they would've played It when I seen them. We miss you Tom. RIP.
This song is incredible. They've managed to make it melancholy and energetic both at once. One of my favorites by Tom.
Very Robert Smith esq. Melancholy with energy. Only two musicians that can pull that off.
Wrote, then threw away, the book on COOL here...
And... DON"T BRING ME DOWN.
Robert Smith only wishes he could write half as well as this
@@docsavage8640 the cure - not much of a fan lol But I like a few songs
2024 May. Man imagine the music we didn't get to hear because of his life being cut short. RIP Mr Petty
Sure do miss you!! ❤️
If you don't see value in this music You must an alien.
"That's quite a good song," Petty says. "I wrote it quite late at night I think. I thought it was a nice optimistic verse in the end: 'I don't believe the good times are over.' I was probably feeling a little melancholy around that time. That song was one of the few things I was excited about on the album. Also not released as a single, Bruce Springsteen took me aside and told me what a great song that was. That made me feel better; somebody noticed it."
"When we toured this record in Europe," Benmont says, "in the middle of 'Straight Into Darkness' for about four or five gigs in a row, fights broke out. It didn't matter if we were playing a regular gig or an army base or what, fights would break out in the middle of that song. I really love that song. I like it when Tom writes the darker stuff."'
-from the liner notes of Playback (boxed set)
I recall how the album (which I still play) got lukewarm reviews when it came out. I guess the critics didn't think it broke new ground. Tom did an interview where he said something apologetic like "well, you've just got to keep turning stuff out, you know?" Fast forward forty years, and a lot of their most enduring standards were on this album, and not just because the videos got heavy rotation on MTV back then. Just sayin'.
Great song by TP. "The weak ones fall, the strong carry on." As in so many things in life. A real testament to perseverance and faith.
Yes and no -- his taking on the music industry is the stuff of legend and given his abusive father but abiding love for bro and mother I can see that he wanted a stable family in his band and at home -- problem seemed to be that he got railroaded into an early marriage with someone too fragile to handle that new life and things fell apart and this song is painful although brilliant because every once in a while biographical circs found their way into his music and I think that's why this song hurts to listen to.
I think a lot of relationships end because one or both people stop believing in it. He's making a brave choice to carry on despite the darkness and hard times, he wants to believe that things will get better. It is sad but it's so damn beautiful.
RIP Tom and Howie.
Listening to his (Howie) bass and vocals on this...what a loss...
Heartbreakers ROCK!! silly cliche but they are THE rock stars of MY TIME. Thank God for real music...played with real instruments...and the song writing of real life!!! Thank You Tom Petty and Heartbreakers. You grew mine up and keep me rockin' and ROLLIN'~!!!! XOXO!!!
You Rock Me Baby!!! 🎸😛🎶💔
one of his best songs ever ….. my name is Tom too...…...coolest rocker ever!!!!…. miss this guy....got a cat.... a month after he died.....named him.....Thomas Earl Petty.... one COOL CAT he was :)
In my best Glyn Johns snobbish voice I tell you - "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Now THAT is a rock 'n' roll band." The elegance and simplicity of this is nothing short of mesmerizing.
One of the greatest song writers ever, him and Mike.
Two years ago we lost Tom Petty. I hope we never forget his music. (10/02/2019)
Magic is Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. RIP Tom and Howie. Miss you 😘🎸💘🎩
This is the best version of this song, by far. back in 1985 I recorded this onto a cassette tape off the radio and played the hell out of it through my college years.
I still have this on VHS. All the best stuff from that day.
What is a cassette? 😉
This is a totally awesome performance. TP is deep into it, Mike gets to jam, they are tight, Howie's harmonies are perfect, and the song itself is full of tension, tension, tension............................ until the release at the C major part and you cry..................tears of sadness but relief. A performance for the You Tube Live Rock Hall of Fame, if and when there is one!!!!!!!
This is during the Pack Up The Plantation tour. They added a horn section (The Soul Lips) and three female back-up singers. While it added an interesting dimension to some songs, I prefer my TP&THB unadulterated. However, Kudos to Scott Thurston for his promotion to Official Heartbreaker.
quite right but if I haven't fallen down some rabbit hole the album was no. 4 after Damn the Torpedoes and there was a Straight into Darkness feel about the whole project; I dare say we the audience value it justifiably but despite Tom's protestations to the contrary, that he didn't write confessionally, which needs to be said, there are obvious links between what was going on in his own life and his own life wasn't a pink cloud or a summer breeze -- pick a metaphor. I honestly don't want to be intrusive but there does exist biographical evidence that he approved. that Things didn't go well at times.
This is a true work of art.... Petty classic !!!
Hell yes.
Tom Petty forever!!!
Can you believe how friggin' tight and good this band is? With TP writing most of the amazing songs, Mike doing lead guitar, Howie fitting right in, Stan spot on cuz he's live, and Benmont doing his usual, nothing could be finer........and this is LIVE! Proud to say most of 'em, including TP, are from my town, Gainesville, FL. !!
+John Stephano Thanks John..........I will do so! So cool you mentioned this....appreciated.
Math Person as tom said at the hall of fame they are the best fucking band in America
Sounds pretty good to me West Oz Rocker! I missed Tom saying that.......
One of my favorites also, so very 👍 We went straight into darkness, Straight in the night!!! 😜🤪😋😛😘🥰😍😌😊😇😘🙃
tom petty: genius
OMG RIP TOM..a part of my youth is now gone forever
TP write some great songs. He poured his heart into this one.
Howie....such a great high harmony
from an overlooked album 'long after dark' which might be my favorite chock full of great tunes and production ....
Me too. His music got me through some dark times.
Howie Epstein is the gem of this clip.
Yes to this
Pure genius..The lyrics Make me want to cry....So good my emotions find it hard to take it.
Yes...love this song but it really hurts at the same time. Still 💔
To me--this is one of TP's best songs
Apparently Bob Dylan's favorite.
This is what music perfection sounds and feels like. Best sounding live video on RUclips!
I don't believe the good times are all over, I don't believe the thrill is all gone...
💔🖤💔
Man, I miss this guy and his band SO MUCH. RIP gentle soul!
So amazing how you can hear so many individual things whenever they played.
Benmont tench and his amazing keyboard playing, Stan Lynch being the heartbeat of the Heartbreakers and providing amazing Harmony, Mike Campbell's mind-blowing guitar, Howie Epstein playing solid base and rhythm guitar while providing amazing harmony with Tom, and of course Tom Petty's amazing voice and guitar playing.
I honestly think I prefer Scott Thurston's harmonies to Howie's, although Howie is no slouch either. Howie used to play for Del Shannon and Scott used to play for Jackson Browne, among others. Of course we all have our preferences.
their most underrated song
Tom's best Song
I think you may be right.
Love this! They are on fire!
Great song. I love Tom's songwriting. So down to earth and straight ahead lyrics. RIP Tom Petty.
When you got Stan Lynch and Howie Epstein doing those harmony vocals, Mike just playing what the song needs, Ben adding all that texture to one of Tom's best songs. You got an instant classic and a band with pure chemistry
What a great band they were. So grateful for the ten times I saw them live.
It didn't get by me! Tom Petty is the most underrated singer/songwriter/ guitar player ever and to think he started back in the day like so many others- the 70's- he's just been there all along, a position I know he appreciates. He keeps great company. Check out his current radio program on Sirius XM channel 25- awesome stuff- the guy is so grounded and rock'n'roll to the bone!
These guys came out singing pure rock n' roll at a time when we were being beaten to death with punk and disco. He was like an oasis for me. I grew up with The Beatles, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Dead...Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers? Right up there. No denying it. I'm 63 now and spend my time in the car on Sirius XM31. I'm good to go.
I don't think Tom is under rated at all. His songs and music is recognized world wide. In my mind, his writing and composition is up there with Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Jackson Browne, among others.
The only person who underrated Tom was Tom. That’s why he devoted his life to music and his fans. Mike Campbell said in an interview a week after his death that at their final show at the Hollywood Bowl Tom was at the top of the mountain. He finally felt content. Sadly we lost him a week later.
@@hannaj4032 I would respectfully agree and disagree ... Dylan got the nobel prize, Clapton is spoken of in hushed reverent tones, Neil Young still poster child for the angry and disaffected. In a 2014 interview for Q CBC Ghomeshi said you don't always get mentioned with your iconic .contemporaries, does that bother you and Tom's answer was no, I don't have time to be bothered I'm just glad I'm still in the conversation.
But yes you are right, his own harshest critic; read Conversations with Tom Petty, musicologist Paul Zollo, and Tom's 2nd wife Dana would sit him down and make him listen to albums he couldn't bear until he saw what she meant. Great comment on a complicated subject. What I think, presumptuous that may be is that as a man and an artist, although I think he fell on his sword for his audience and died too soon in point of fact he had found peace and forgiveness and redemption -- more than most of us manage in 90 yrs let alone 66. Tx again for great comment.
@@hapax87 I agree with his sterling worth as a songwriter/musician and the singular thing that happened throughout his career was that people he revered in the world of music just showed up; which speaks to recognisation by his peers. But until he died he wasn't always acknowledged with the reverence meted out to people like Clapton, Dylan, etc.
The intro still gives me the chills everytime it comes on. That's always been one of my favorites...
Tom Petty rules always and forever
An under-rated and often over-looked song. I would have loved to hear this song live.
Such a talent, music could sure use Tom right now. Kick ass bass by Howie.
If you didn't get it then, you won't get it now...💘🐐
The band at it peak or near peak. So good ....
Here's to the Man that mowed the yards in Florida. Tom you're one of a kind!
Tom passed 6 years ago today -- this would be my second favorite song of his after room at the top
Ohhhhh - give it up to me I need it yeah - girl I know a good thing when I see it, baby wrong or right I mean it YEAHHHHH!!!
What a great number! All the more so because I've never heard it before. It's not like I haven't followed Tom and the Heartsmashers .... I have .... this one just got by me. It's great to find it now anyway. There is so much garbage around these days, it's just that much better to find a fantastic song like this one!
I've seen this a thousand times. Howie. We noticed you. We know.
I miss you guys.
The weak ones fall the strong carry on!
Howie, fantastic. RIP
What a song!!! 🎼🎸💖
I love when people say SM57s aren't made for vocals... They sure served Tom and the Heartbreakers well for decades!
I love this song. It is one of my favourites.
TP you're the absolute best!!! Thanks for all the tunes, shows, and great times!!!!
God knows that I am going to miss you Tom you knew peoples souls and inner pain you knew the working class I truly will miss you. you were the one and only, the best
Pure Tom Petty . This one really makes me miss him a lot.
awesome. great to see howie havin such a good time.
Hugely underrated band. RIP Tom
bern5254 underrated? By whom.....hundreds of million records sold ect...
Yeah by the uk radio stations. We didn’t hear enough of this fantastic musician and band. We missed out big time. 😢🎸🎼💐💝
God bless Howie RIP...great voice and bassist
it happen in everyones life at least once, straight into darkness love I mean a thinking man song
This is one of his best, RIP Tom,
From a very great album
Long After Dark doesn't get it's proper due. It might be my favorite Heartbreakers album because it's...maybe?...they're most guitar heavy record. If it's not the most, it's certainly close. One Story Town another great song that isn't mentioned enough. Same Old You, one of their best riffs. Neither even made it on the Playback compilation set and you won't hear any of these songs on Classic Radio.
Such a great track, I didn't even know it for the longest time as it wasn't a single and didn't get radio play
A roommate of mine at college had taped part of the original Farm Aid off the radio on audio cassette. He had this song and always thought it was the best version.
one of my many many favs.straight into darkness
I adore TPHB but they needed those horns & background singers like they needed a hole in their heads. Howie, Stan & Benmont MORE than adequate. Love this song & all of Long After Dark!
kinda growing on me
Tom came to the same conclusion. I appreciate him expanding his palette, but, as you noted, he already had one of the greatest bands on the planet. We never heard another horn after this tour.
Agreed. The sax in this song is odious.
Who let Kenny G onstage while Tom was playing ?
You know, John Fogerty among others tried the "big band" approach back in the '80s, but they pretty much discontinued that practice quickly. I think they realized that simpler can be better.
great version of one of Tom's very best songs. Awesome to see Howie young and sharp too. Like an elite show poodle.
I read Springsteen's a big fan of this tune.
@@tulllguy 🤮🤮🤮
@@lemurianchick Bruce annoys me too.
Simply brilliant. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖
My 4 year old just told me after this song got over “That was a good song Daddy!!” Great music is TIMELESS and knows no bounds.
"Straight into Darkness" from "Long After Dark" (1982) was the first TP & the HB's LP to feature Howie Epstein on bass and vocals.
Simple, straightforward songs that were just plain good tunes like this one, these guys dominated the early 80's! Tom, you are missed!
HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL. SO SAD AT THE SOMETIME. LOSING FEELINGS OF LOVE....BEEN THERE.
Thanks so much for posting this! I remember watching this in College and lost the VHS tape somewhere over the years. Great quality as well. Thanks again.
I ... can't believe I've never heard this before... !
You got to check out his early stuff, before 85. In 85 he went on a run that is truly epic. Starting w/Southern Accents, Let Me Up, I've had Enough. Then Full Moon Fever, Travelling Wilberys vol. 1 Into the Great Wide Open & Wildflowers. He never really stopped. It's like no other artist I can recall anywhere. 16 was as good a year to see him as1985 was. May Your memory live Forever Tom Petty!!!
This is the best of the posts for this song
RIP Tom and Howie...😭😭😭😭😭
This was a concert for the American farmer. Live Aid was nice, and fed a whole lot of starving humans.
But it was good to know someone was thinking about American families, who were hungry just the same.
“Straight Into Darkness “, real love., the strong carry on”🦆
✌️🌻♥️🎸🦆

I absolutely love this song!! I love all of Tom’s 🎶 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😢❤️❤️
The greatest rock band that ever hit a stage. Sadly missed but so thankful they were there
I just LOVE this video! I miss him so....
that's rock n roll,i'll take this 24/7 you can have that over done springsteen stuff
Why do people feel they need to choose between these 2 musicians?
Phenomenal! Thanks for posting this! Happened across it by recommendation from another version of this song. Wonderful sounds and rhythm. Unmatched in my opinion. Wish there were more images of Howie and others in this but surely can hear him on bass and vocals. Nice touch with the saxophone too; but can’t decide who it was on it. My guess would likely be wrong.
ONE OF MY FAVORITES
Tom loved Howies vocals
Excellent, Forever Tom
So much love ❤❤❤❤
That saxophone can frig right off
grows on me
Rest in Peace Tom.😢
