Yes totally. I hope one day a woman looks at me just like Stevie does Tom. Wishful thinking maybe but I think it will happen for all of us. Well the true lovers and dreamers at least!
For me personally what makes this song so great is it tells the lesser known story of someone who gets left behind in a failed relationship when one person is ready to move on before the other is, the third verse especially covers how watching that same person in a relationship later and how they treat their new significant other so much better than they ever did them, that burning, cutting pain from the realization the X had the potential to be a better person they just didn't see you as worth the effort.
This was mentioned in the Tom Petty Biography I read. Initially, he did write this for S. Nicks. However, the song was too good and he told her and she said “ keep it”. Write a different song for me. So he did, “ stop dragging my heart around”. Petty didn’t say he had a personal attachment to the song, only that it was too good. But, I think he did feel it had the mirror effect on his first wife, Jane Benyo. He was only 17 when they met.
One of the best DUETS EVER RECORDED....WE love and miss you, Tom....r.i.p...you have us all so, so much. Thank you. And thanks to Stevie for singing on this haunting ballad...it's perfect.
This song wrecks me. I am HIV posivtive and there are parts of the song that make me feel that sadness it brings me every day....I guess looking back at the mistake I made. but I know it's about a lover trying to think of what her new Lover is like to her and why he is a better man. From all your comments....Stevie really really loved Tom....his death just must be a horror. but isn't it great that the song made it to Tom's album, even though it isn't on Bella Donna? I love you both......we will remember the song always. love to you.

I used to be in 'awe' over this song. But it was ruined for me, but some careless, evil man..who toyed with my heart so much...that I don't even remember the good anymore...well barely. It was all based on a lie- a lie that went on for 4 years, and changed what good I was. But now, I'm trying to find whom I was at one time. And it's getting there. Greet song- but too hurtful for me to even love again. It is funny, how just one "man" (hardly) or person; can make you rethink your music, the stuff you once loved in life...even who you are.
Three of my favorite songs by a duet are by these two. Hard Promises (Insider), I will Run to You and Stop Draggin. I've seen Stevie in concert twice, same with Tom Petty. Each time I have this wild fantasy that the other one will show up as a special guest. What a dreamer.
Stevie asked Tom to write her a song but when they sang it the first time he took the lead and they both knew he had to keep it for himself. Beautiful song. I've been a fan of Tom for as long as I can remember thanks to my dad. His music has gotten me through the darkest time of my life & for that I am forever grateful. & he's still rockin. Amazing man, amazing music.
Hey younguns! She wasn't the only one in love with that man. I've been in love with him since the first time I heard "Breakdown". I bought the album the next day and I've bought every one since. He grew up not too far from where I live now. "in love" might be an exaggeration but I surely love his voice and his songs.
How is it possible I’ve never heard this before? There’s no such thing as a perfect song but this comes so close. Their vocal harmonies alone are fabulous. Every human with a heart can relate to the lyrics. And the stripped down instrumentals make it ... perfect. Someone else commented that they wished someone would look at them the way Stevie looked at Tom. I had a woman look at me that way for a few years and will always regret not doing whatever it would’ve taken to keep her with me.
If you liked the Netflix documentary, the book "Petty" by Warren Zanes is excellent. Petty's story is so deep and has so many twists and turns. But man, he never backs down. So to speak.

It's a circle of deception
It's a hall of strangers
It's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta' know

Hey younguns! She wasn't the only one in love with that man. I've been in love with him since the first time I heard "Breakdown". I bought the album the next day and I've bought every one since. He grew up not too far from where I live now. "in love" might be an exaggeration but I surely love his voice and his songs.
I'm "in lOve" with him too! :-P
I love this fucking song so much
Matt Caracciolo
I do too!
Me too Matt. Going to see Fleetwood Mac tomorrow night and I know Tom will be there!
Here's to the survivors.
The camera really loves her.
Yess it definitely does!!! Only a few can pull that off !!
My most favorite Stevie duet. One of the most incredible songs ever written.
Love Petty and Nicks. Fun to revisit these after watching Daisy Jones and the Six
Thank you Tom Petty; this is beautiful...
Wow, sweet song. I learned about it while watching the Tom Petty documentary on Netflix, definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it...
Michael Ashe thank you! Watching it now!!!
Awesome! It's long, I watched it over the course of three evenings, loved it. :)
If you liked the Netflix documentary, the book "Petty" by Warren Zanes is excellent. Petty's story is so deep and has so many twists and turns. But man, he never backs down. So to speak.
Michael Ashe whats the documentary called?
mr_white_dude2. 0 Runnin down a dream
You've got a dangerous background
And everything you've dreamed of
Yeah you're the Dark Angel
It don't show when you break up
and I'm the one who oughta know
Im the one left in the dust
Yeah I'm the broken hearted fool
Who was never quite enough
[Chorus:]
I'm an insider, I been burned by the fire
And I've had to live with some hard promises
I've crawled through the briars -- I'm an insider
It's a circle of deception
It's a hall of strangers
It's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust
[Chorus]
I'll bet you're his masterpiece
I'll bet you're his self-control
Yeah you'll become his legacy
His quiet world of white and gold
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you left to rust
Not one of your twisted friends
I'm the one you couldn't love
[Chorus]
This song always makes me cry
You open hearts to sincere music in the purest form. Rest easy in the next universe.
My favorite TPHB. Live at Gainesville is the real one. Written for Stevie Nicks, Tom decided to record it as a duet with her instead. Good choice.
Such a brilliant analogy of things left unsaid.. Brilliant Mr. Pettty..
It's a cage without a key
You can feel the danger
And I'm the one who oughta know
I'm the one you couldn't trust
I'm the lonely silent one
I'm the one left in the dust
Searingly beautiful … 💔
This touches my heart deeply and is an unbelievably accurate description of my failed marriage and the divorce I am currently going through.
One of my favorites--just pure, beautiful harmony! Needles & Pins, also wonderful. Thank God we have his music forever.❤🙏
Beautiful
How have I Never Heard this before??!
The only musician I bursted into tears when hearing of his death Tom is a one in a kind and blessed us so much with his talent and Stevie compliments him perfect on this song
I’m the one left in the dust ~ I’m the one you couldn’t love ~ I’m an insider
Rip Tom petty you and Stevie belong together. My heart is breaking.
Kelley Sue Hi
I sure do miss the 70s and 80s. The music🎧 today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time. Life was much easier and everyone enjoyed life! Is this your favorite song?
Agreed, it really was MAGIC, along with this pair's 'Stop Draggin' Heart Around' featured on her album that same year as well. :-)
I so miss Tom Petty. What greatness.
Two of the greatest voices of all time.
They sounded so great together
KEEP SINGING IN HEAVEN!
She's silent....... She's Insider. Hard to type these word's... RIP Tom Petty.
