  • ** Note: The comment in the video about the car being a Positive earth (+VE) is INCORRECT - all SII's were Negative earth (-VE) based on further homework after a comment from a viewer **
Been working on several systems and waiting on parts. A bunch of parts came in and I managed to finish several small system sub-assemblies.
    Topics covered are:
    - Clutch and Brake Reservoir
    - Alternator
    - Ignition Coil
    - Fuel Filter
Nothing major here just a lot of small pitfalls that I found as I went through the renovation / rebuild work - big call out to Moss and Welsh for the help as I sorted out the issues

John, Another great video. Thanks. I'm making progress in a full mechanical rebuild of my 70 OTS. I debated about buying new brake fluid bottles given it was hard to really clean inside the old ones. I decided to put them in my Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner that I bought to clean the SU carbs. They cleaned up nice enough to keep them.

Your engine bay is going to look a treat.....I converted mine to negative earth eliminating further complications in the future like USB cables and other electrical accessories should I wish. My series 1 for instance came with no radio from the factory.....

Very impressed with your cleanup and plating. And then you said that your car was positive earth. What!! I went to the Jag forum "E Types switched in 1965 with the introduction of the 4.2 and ..." So the fan motor for your heater that you just told us about is going to suck and not blow; that's going to suck. Fuel pump, gauges, radio, radiator fan and the ignition coil all special for +gnd. You have a unique car and a lesser man that you (me for example) would have switched everything -gnd in a heartbeat. Paint it white, go on, I don't care any more; it's going to fall off anyway - positive ground indeed!

      Hugh,
I don't profess to be an expert on the car, especially the electrics. This is my first SII rebuild.
When I ordered my new distributor system there were options to buy a +ve or -ve system. I really had no idea which one it was so I checked my photos from the strip down of the original car and it showed the earth cable was connected to the positive terminal of the battery. I had never taken the battery out of the original car and it ran fine for a considerable time when I first bought it. Hence the +ve earth comment.
I will double check those photos tomorrow to make sure I have not misunderstood what they show.
I have no clue what it should or should not be - I am just following what was appears to be on the original car.
If you think that all SII E Types are -ve earth then thats valuable information. Can you send me the link you are referring too

Besides looking at the way the original battery was wired up what other way can you recommend I cross check the earth polarity for the car?

Okay, I double checked the original photos of the car from the strip down and it clearly shows that the earth cable was connected to the +ve terminal of the battery. Either the battery was connected up incorrectly or the car is a +ve earth.

"Paint it white, go on, I don't care any more: it's going to fall off anyway" Really? Was that really necessary? A simple "You might want to double check the electrical system polarity because Jag switched to negative earth in 1965" would have sufficed.

After the interesting comment from Hugh I went back and I checked my car strip down photos and also followed up on an internet search and made a few calls to contacts that have more experience than I do.
ALL SII's were NEGATIVE EARTH and not Positive
The confusion in my car came from the strip down photos which all clearly show the positive battery terminal is connected to the braided wire used to ground the car - I have approximately 10 strip down photos that show that. When I was ordering the new electronic-distributor I was asked to check the earth polarity. I chose a positive earth distributor based on the photos.
Also, after some further homework I believe that the "paint falling off comment" relates to positive grounded cars suffer more corrosion than negative grounded cars. It was apparently one of the reasons why Jaguar switched to negative grounded cars in 1965
Thank you for all the comments - I have been able to correct a misunderstanding without incurring any additional damage and I learned some interesting new facts about my car.

Hi Carl - thanks for the comment - Yes, after further homework I learned it should be NEGATIVE earth - I appreciate the help
