Sunbury was first settled in 1836, by George Evans and William Jackson. It was Jackson and his brother, Samuel, who named the township Sunbury, after Sunbury-on-Thames, in Middlesex, England when it was established in 1857. The Post Office opened on 13 January 1858.
In 1874, Clarke's son William built a mansion on an estate named "Rupertswood", after his own son, Rupert. The estate had access to a private railway station. Though the station was constructed in the late 19th century, the Clarkes did not pay the railways for its construction until the 1960s. (Rupertswood railway station was closed as a result of the Regional Fast Rail project and is now only a disused platform). The Clarkes also had a connection to the Kelly Gang story via their police connection with Superintendent Hare.

Hello JoJo and Peter, what a lovely video to watch here in bed Sunday morning. Thank you so much for doing this. I always thought of Sunbury as rather well not a really nice suburb but having looked around it with you. It looks really lovely. You really do have to get off the highway to have a proper look don’t you. Love all the buildings absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful to hear. Peter is so chatty you two are so funny together. I love it. Wonderful to see Ruby doing so well. I especially love the asylum. Perhaps I have an affinity with those. A refuge from the outside world that sounds nice. It’s not what I conjure up of them but that’s is a nice way to look at it lots of love from beautiful Ballarat darling God bless. Peter we did not waste this 10 minutes with thoroughly enjoyed it. Have a wonderful Sunday darlings.🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️wonderful to see the drone out !
Thank you Tammy for the lovely comments. It certainly was a lovely place to explore. I am so glad that you enjoyed the video.
One has to get off the freeways in order to explore these amazing country towns and see what is on offer. Enjoy your day Tammy and regards to Bert. Love from Castlemaine, we are up for one day. 🙏🏼👍🏼🤠

Thanks. Didn't know there was much too Sunbury. Rupertswood, I knew a Clarke actually two, a brother and sister, descendants of Big Clarke.
I hope they had some great stories about their ancestors. Thank you for watching and most of all for leaving us your great comments.
Kind regards ~ Joseph

Thank you for coming along with us.

Thanks for the great video of my relatively new home town of Sunbury. Ralph and I are still surprised by how much we love living here. It's a place that's not quite country, not quite city. I've never lived anywhere where I felt safer. And Peter, you can get to Melbourne in 30 minutes if you catch the V-line train.😄Thanks again.
@@ritadanko4406 thank you so much Rita, I really appreciated the comment and how much Sunbury means to you. I was surprised how wonderful the infrastructure is and how it has progressed. I did notice some of the beautiful homes on the journey to the old Asylum.
Have a great week and thank you for coming along with us on our walk. ❤️👍🏽🙏🏽😘
Hello Peter and JoJo we have been on the road and now playing catch up. Don't worry if you get put in Jail we will get you out! Oh Ron loves Ruebens his favorite sandwich those did look good. Before you mentioned Ruby I already noticed how her head was on JoJo it was adorable. Really enjoyed how you took turns on the tour so many great buildings, facts and always love your added comments! The asylum at the end was really interesting wow! These walks you are going on are really wonderful! Hahaha Peter we didn't waste 10 minutes any time with you is priceless and timeless! Love u guys!😊
Depends, you can get me out please...Peter can stay in and we will throw away the key. 😩🤣
Great you enjoyed the Banter Jodi and Ron. Always great to have you with us. Big hugs 🙏🏼👍🏼🤠♥️🐨🦘
nice upload 👍🍀🔥
Thanks for coming along with us on our walk around Sunbury, cheers ~ Joseph 🤠🙏🏼👍🏼
great video my friends
Thanks for the visit John, have a great day, 🤠🙏🏼👍🏼
Always wonderful to see such great buildings that have stood unchanged for decades! Many have a hard time of it here in our climate with the many changes in temperature and the annual freeze and thaw and snow, ice and wind conditions. My goodness, why would anyone chose to live here! LOL LOL Gotta love that sauerkraut, a very famous maker closed up shop just a few years ago here and haven't been able to find a substitute since.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for joining us Bruce and Otis. Have a great day. 🙏🏼🤠👍🏼
Really interesting walk around Sunbury- lots of great and varied history! I’m learning more about Australia history, and really enjoying it- your Heritage walks and the flyers are really well researched- thanks guys! I hope the old asylum building becomes something wonderful. We have an a similar old campus in our area that is unfortunately falling into ruins. See you next time- Cheers, Jen 😄🌳🌳🌳
Glad you enjoyed it Jennifer.
Like you, we hope that the Asylum does become a good use of Public usage and a part perhaps as a museum.
Thank you for watching, have a great week. 🙏🏼🤠👍🏼♥️
Hello from Naples, Florida. Very nice! And interesting, indeed. We watched an old Johnny Carson video on RUclips today and thought of you. He had Dame Edna on as a guest. It I remember correctly you visited the town where he was from. Thanks for sharing this lovely tour with us, have a great weekend 👍 💯 ❤
Thank you for coming along with us through Sunbury.
Dame Edna's fictitious town of Moonee Ponds, you remember well. Glad you enjoyed this episode. Have a great week. 🙏🏼🤠👍🏼♥️
@@CowboyJojosAdventures You're so welcome!
love to little tidbits I bit up on your walks around these amazing places. Home of the Ashes! Rupertswood was a wonderful building, and I can only imagine how good the gardens would be. The Emu Boots homestead is brilliant and will be cool to see what biomes on Sunbury asylum. Thanks once again for sharing your little slice of the world ✌🏻
Glad you enjoyed it Chris and thank you for coming along with us on our walk around Sunbury. Have a great day. 🙏🏼🤠👍🏼
You two always find the nicest buildings in these small towns. We've never been to Sunbury as it's a town we always just drive past on the way to somewhere else. Looks lovely with a very interesting history. Excellent! Have a great weekend! ~ Karen & Nimal
Thank you Karen and Nimal for joining us on this tour. I always new about the town, just never ventured there. Finally it happened. Enjoy your Sunday.

Great video as always, thanks for sharing 😍
You are so welcome and thank you for joining us. 🙏🏼🤠👍🏼
love this video. me and ryan went to check out sunbury asylum just a shame it is closed off to the public and a security guard there. it should be open for the public to view like historic tours. always enjoy your videos peter and JoJo i so hope someday you do a Aradale tour video. victoria has some amazing historical places.
@@GaryAguilera223 Thank you so much Gary, like you a tour of this Asylum would be awesome. They used to conduct them years ago, unfortunately the lady who did the tours was no longer able. Thank you for stopping by and watching. Always great to have you along. 🙏🏽👍🏽🤠
You guys are just so wonderfully watchable with your quirky funniness (is that a word 🤷🏻♀️🤣) We absolutely thoroughly enjoyed exploring Sunbury (great name) your information in each building is spot on The Asylum building is interesting and a fab building! We have had a lot of flack from our Lincoln steampunk video as this event is known as Lincoln Asylum but since changing last years video from Lincoln Asylum to Lincoln Steampunk it has done much better numbers but not using the word Asylum this year has upset a lot if people 🤷🏻♀️ Well there’s 10 minutes of my life I won’t get beck 🤣😂 just kidding absolutely loved it, your banter is spot on, love you guys dearly 😘❤️
Thank you Jill and Nicholas, sometimes I wonder how much banter is a good thing, but some people love it. Glad you enjoyed coming along with us on this walk around Sunbury, a great place to explore and loads of history. have a great week.
much love to both of you ♥️♥️♥️🤠🙏🏼👍🏼
My family used to get Ricotta here back in the 80s, when it was still rural.
6:52 I believe is where they got the name Clarkefield from, the next settlement after Sunbury
Certainly would have been very fresh Matt. Sunbury was a great place to explore.
Okay,I wonder what Clarkefield has to offer.
@@CowboyJojosAdventures Clarkefield, an isolated town has 2 major structures, the railway station and a pub that is permanently closed and haunted. It has many stories which you can find in this video:

Hello Matt, RUclips is doing funny things. Long way to go for Ricotta Cheese, but it would be the freshest. Thank you for watching.
Great video Joe and Peter,
My brother recently moved to Sunbury, he thought Epping was getting too crowded 😂,
He’s coming back soon,
Great history around Sunbury.
@@mdmelbourne6076 I think I would prefer Sunbury to Epping, more character. Glad you enjoyed the video Jim. Hope you are having a great weekend. 🤠👍🏽
@@CowboyJojosAdventures you gotta research the underbelly of Sunbury lol, it’s worse than Melton by a long shot 😂
@@mdmelbourne6076 Oh no!
@@mdmelbourne6076 agreed! Lived there for 3 years and had several shady characters in my street alone :( Was reluctant to leave as I bought a home I was renovating but for the safety of my son & as a single mum I sold up and moved to Northcote. Though I must say we still visit and have somewhat fond memories of the area :) Thanks for the vid!
@@minxisaysno northcote is a beautiful place,
I’m a little further up the train line,
only wish I could afford to be in northcote, I’m ten stations away lol

We are all on the spectrum somewhere 😆
