By the way, I mentioned the change in render time for motovlogs (7 hours down to 10 minutes)
This voice over vid file took 5 minutes to render...down from maybe 2 hours (4 if I decide to throw my orange tint on it)
Normally I would just leave the house while a video renders so I don't have to stare at it.........this time, I just made a bagel.

I have a 2000 VFR800, basically the same bike. I think it's the best generation VFR -- gear driven cams and fuel injection. But it does suffer a little bit from ugliness. Depends on which part of the bike you're looking at. The front end is great, but the tail and the front fender...ugly. I re-cut my front fender to give it a sportier shape. Still trying to figure out what to do with the tail.

5th Gen for me. I've had three and all fitted with aftermarket pipes (Remus, Micron and Viper) the noise on each was sublime but the Remus (in high level form) was brilliant for looks, build quality and sound. I think Honda missed the point completely when they introduced the vtec in the 6th Gen. Who the hell wants a powerband on a sports tourer?

Had them for years, drive them every day,and will keep them the rest of my life. RC45's were the 4th and last generation of carburated bikes. [STARES IN 5th GEN OWNER]
j/k, great video. Taste is taste, but I love the look of my 5th gen. The linked brakes sound like a bad idea, and if you want to slide your rear wheel, they might be, but in normal riding the system is almost invisible and the available braking power is huge. I jokingly refer to it as the most normal motorcycle ever made, but that’s a compliment. It’s fast enough for me, it has no bad habits, and the engine is so tractable.

From highways to backroads and the Nürburgring. only had 1 "major" hiccup when 1 of my spark plug treads were done for. Had to change the whole cilinderhead with my brother in law. It's a heck if a lot better than people think it is, but nobody wants to give it the light of day because it got shit reviews from people expecting the wrong things from it. Not saying it isn't without a few weird and annoying "issues" but it's way better than people give it credit for.

In my case, it's mainly a matter of being notable, having an interesting backstory, or making me think about something beyond the bike itself. By the time you get to the 1200, it's really just more of the same stuff and generally speaking I try to avoid simply citing a spec sheet.. the bike doesn't quite have the same interesting factor of the previous ones even though I'm sure if I ACTUALLY rode one I'd love it for the reasons you'd supposed to love it for.

What i found is the more power and tight suspension you get is not built for UK roads but the vfr750 eats them up and you can sling it about and use the torque it gets me into more trouble than my gsxr1000k4 because you cant push that!

LOL, I just started working on a 1988 Honda NT650. Is an off shoot of these bikes. Single sided swing arm, 2 spark plugs per cylinder. I dont know how but your recent videos have been in line with bikes I had been rebuilding. 1985 Honda CB450 around the same time you had your CB550 video and now this... and I'm across the country from you.

5th Gen is the pinnacle for me, gear driven cams, fuel injection and valves a home mechanic can reshim. I don't notice the linked brakes until last ditch stopping where the bike remains level as if by magic.
As for the looks, front on is beautiful, from the side it's a bit lardy.

@@k0nanick I think the "choke" (fast idle) is quaint, a throw back to an older age. When servicing I use it to get the engine up to temperature without having to blip the throttle.

I loved the vid. Nice one. I ride the VFR1200x. Not the fastest or up to date bike on the road but I love the lazy engine. Effortless to over 120mph, no sorry gets you to 70 and can stay there all day. And for the size and weight, still quite nimble through traffic.

Interestingly recently I saw multiple of the 1st generation ones on sale here... these look very special and appealing for me and some are in quite nice condition.
Another bikes which i really enjoy to watch and think of getting one as a summer bike:
    Honda Hornet 900(aka 919), Yamaha TRX850, Honda CB1300, Kawa ZXR 1200 ...
Very nicely matching music at the beginning! But somehow at 0,75 speed the video is more enjoyable for me :D

So the 2015 is a gear or chain driven cams? What’s the ultimate attainable VFR sport bike?

  • @jimromanski2702

I'm looking to pickup a VFR this summer. I have a 1985 Magna VF700C that's a blast to ride. I don't care about the looks so I'm kind of leaning toward a Gen 5 VFR800. But I'm also interesting in a VFR1200. Why the 120...well 170HP sounds like a pretty good reason. I've also fallen in love with shaft drive like my Magna has. I'm planning to go and ride a few bikes and see what I think. I'm afraid I might just make a decision strictly on HP but then I'd miss out on having owned a VFR800 which seems like something everyone should do. What do you think? Thanks for the fun video.

Also had a Honda mbx125 that was more or less a 125 version of the red VF you see in this video. Looked almost identical. Hondas are the greatest bikes ever!

The early VF interceptor was a separate model from the sabre and magna. Interceptor has a different engine orientation and it's unique from the other two bikes. If you look at a sabre or magna beside an in interceptor, the Interceptors front cylinder bank is more upright and the rear bank faces more rearward.

I personally know of two old geezers(in their 50s) that have older vfr, one is the older 90s one with the divided head light unit and the other is the first 800(I think it was that or the model just before it, cant remember) but both of them had way over 320.000 km on the odometer at that time which was 2013-2014. One of them had never done anything to it but change the oil yet it went like stink when the whole club got together for club rides. Impressive, but they were more impressed with my nc35(rvf400) at the time which also had 60000 on the odo, and God knows how much more it really had done. What I missed with my v4 was that it did not have the same 270 degree crank as the much cooler sounding bigger v4 brothers but instead had the 360 one like the rc30 and that sound a bit too strained if you will.

    I had a 6th Gen (think it waas a 2002?) and was just a great do-it-all bike.
Comfy for long trips, but culd lean into it and drag a knee in the twisties.
I still randomly check Craigslist for a cherry one from that era.

I almost got a '94 750 last year... The thing that kept me from buying it was probably the awareness I had of the fact that I'd rev the damn thing EVERYWHERE, and I'd be deaf in less than a week from getting on it. God bless V4s.

    I had a 85 VF500F upgraded to a 87 VFR750 later upgraded (?) to a VF1000R then went to a VFR800.
If I had my choice I'd like to have the 87VFR back.
The 1000 was not much of an upgrade over the 750, and realistically the gains in power were subsumed by the hit it had in handling.
And of course the VFR800 just didn't have the soul of the 87 VFR, when the VTEC kicked in it went from monster to demon but it still didn't have that overall visceral feel of the Gen2
In my mind the only thing you could have done to make that bike better would have been to give it wider tires, and inverted forks and in my mind it would have been perfect.
