    Thank you so much for this and actually all of your videos. Just finished a 280 page, 14 chapter book for the first time. This has made the TOC and Index so much easier than trying to figure it out for myself.

    Wow, you just saved me from redoing an index from scratch on a 235-page book. I knew there was a way to fix the index of a book when the pages had been re-arranged after the index had been done, but I couldn't find anywhere where it told you how it just needed to be regenerated to fix the new page numbers. Whew! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Great video! I haven't worked with indexes so this was a big help. I did want to point out a potential issue users may run into...
    Note that InDesign generates the index in its own text frame. If you leave the frame as is, the Replace Existing Index checkbox is available to perform updates. However, if you flow the index into the rest of the document, then add new entries and try to update these, the Replace Existing Index checkbox will be grayed out.

    Hi. I have a doozie. How do you make an index using all proper names in a book? I’m doing an athletics book and need to index all the athlete names. Tips?
    You seem to know a whole lot on the subject - but is there a good way to index names? Or will I need to go through the whole document and mark each name+surname with an index marker to be able to achieve this? It's a 350page book with about 2000 names... Your feedback will be so appreciated thanks.

      I would love an answer to this as well. I am finishing up a freeze drying reference manual for home use and I have created or defined fairly new industry standard terms and definitions to this type of food preservation. So far the book is over 500 pages before inserting images, charts, and templates.

    Thanks Terry, I only just came across your channel. Great job. I think what some of the live onlookers were referring to was an existing list of words they picked from the content. Rather than adding them one-by-one (while knowing they exist), wouldn't it be convenient to just pour in that list and let Indesign do a bit of a batch job, working on one word after the other? Of course there would be more work to do to make things look shiny and to add cross references within the index etc.pp. But I can imagine it would save people a lot of work.

    Hi Terry, thanks for this wonderful tut on indexing. I have a question. Are index markers similar to footnotes that when you export the InDesign file to an epub, the tags will be carried over also to the resulting eBook? Or I have to manually create the index entries on the eBook?

    Is there a way to link the page number back to the index reference in the body, for ebook export? So that the index is clickable?

    • @troydeckert7273
      @troydeckert7273 3 года назад

      When you export to ebook, it will keep the index so it is clickable in the ebook. There is a step for flowable a epub without pages numbers, or leave the page numbers in for a fixed-page ebook. See the InDesign instructions under the InDesign Help, type index (not tutorials); helpx.adobe.com/indesign/user-guide.html/indesign/using/creating-index.ug.html

    Brilliant tutorial, Terry, thank you so much! One question: Is there any way to index an entry under the same name, regardless of whether the first letter is capitalised? For example, I have the words 'Altcoin' and 'altcoin'. It seems I have to index these seperately in order to get all the page references included! Thanks for your time. Regards, Steve

    First of all, thanks. You did a very nice job here: good, amicable and clear explanation. I noticed that when you generated the index, you generated a new text box. I have an issue with this because I would like the index to flow with the rest of the book text, so that if the content was expanded, the index would also move along the book. Is this possible? I had the same issue with the tables of content, which I had to select and cut in order to insert them inside the main book text, thus losing its update capabilities. : (

    • @troydeckert7273
      @troydeckert7273 3 года назад +1

      You use the cursor to be next to the name in your text where it says "Terry White", but then in the reference/topic line for the index, just type "White, Terry". Thus the book reads Terry White on the page, but the index reads, White, Terry.

  • @troydeckert7273

    The tutorial covers the first level, so to speak, but Terry, can you please provide a bit more clarification? In the video at 11:24 to 11:39 you index "brushes", and "mixer brushes". Thus, the "mixer brush", yes, is in B, not M, but isn't under brushes. How do you get mixer brushes to show physically under brushes, or to show as "brushes, mixer"? That is is really the optimal index listing, not has you leave it with mixer brushes in the B section. If this is not possible, then let us know up front, so we don't search in vain. From 11:18 to 11:34 you state that all future entries placed in B will end up after brushes, like even "banana"? Why would we want that? It's the ordering aspect that this tutorial just hints at, but then leaves us stranded, or doesn't warn us that further ordering refinement just is not possible.
