Agreed. Housing is a good old fashioned supply / demand equation and we just need more homes. For those who live here and hate the high prices and also do not want to see more growth (building more homes), you can't see prices come down or even stop climbing unless we build many more homes

I know what you mean there but I see it as a trade off. There is not so much aggression among the people here and I can go out in my neighborhood at 2 AM walking the dog with little to no concern. I'm okay paying more for that.

It’s true, that certain cities are stopping housing developments in order to stay affordable or small even cause housing developments to go elsewhere. I’m a civil engineer and honestly the biggest thing I worry about is transportation infrastructure in Utah. Like literal one highway (I15) to service all the cities in Utah means that if one person gets into a car crash.. we’re all late to work 😂

I'm fine with Salt Lake City growing upward and changing, and having a night life. I do wish that housing prices weren't so high though, and also I've been job searching for over a year now and despite the hundreds of job applications I've sent out I've had no luck. And I have a bachelor's degree. Not saying that's a problem unique to Salt Lake City. I've also tried applying to other places in other states with also no luck. I'm just saying though. If I didn't have family, I'd be homeless right now.

I think that growing up instead of out will be a bad thing. One of the things that makes Utah unique is that most of us live side by side or just in 2 or 3 story apartments. I have always felt that population density increases dissatisfaction and results in more violent cities. When people get crammed in together things change a lot.

I live in northeastern Utah and there are so many people living here now, the town is busting at the seams. Housing is almost nonexistent for us natives as people from out of state are paying cash and buying up all the homes. I was homeless 2 months ago after a breakup with my two children, we were living in a friends camper with no water or electricity, the low income apartments have such long waiting lists and no affordable housing. The new buildings projects are embezzlement schemes theses developers are getting investigated on. The FDC SLC branch just got shut down cause it was so corrupted they just decided to have Denver ranch now responsible for SLC oversight. As the former FDCs employees are being indicted. Can't imagine the inner dealings to be dug up as the buildings sit vacant. Salt Lake is Salt lake. It's in Utah. We can't even put on the kind of Comic/pop culture conventions roster level of guests because were not that town. We have to stay in our lane. People don't care about stuff that is beyond their means in an economic downturn. People need to read the room and update their business software it seems.

I think in order to make electric cars make more sense here, we need nuclear reactors. Right now our energy is just being produced via R.M.P's coal plants down south. Out of sight doesn't mean out of mind. They also contribute to the inversion in winters here. I do wish we'd be more open to the idea of nuclear power. @@scottdsteele that is simply wrong. People moving here from a state with higher pay and where houses are valued higher are able to pay more for their houses. Not only that, they pay cash for the house. It happened all the time in St. George. I worked in the construction industry for several years. It was astounding how many new builds were being paid for in cash by someone out of state. How is anyone supposed to compete with that? Does the availability of houses impact the price as well? Yes. But when sellers know they can ask for higher prices because an influx of people are moving here from another state with higher wage- it matters. Saying it doesn't is ignoring a factor in the housing market.

Born and raised in Ogden, I've seen Salt Lake and Utah grow tremendously over the years. I personally do not mind the growth but I also know I'm a little odd. Also I remain skeptical that leaving the decision to do the right thing in terms of housing affordability in the same hands that got us into this mess in the first place is a good idea. Corporate developers need to be held accountable, not just for making housing for lower class Utahns impossible, but for making housing for lower class Americans impossible.

I love utah and grew up here but im starting to dislike it
There are so many more buildings coming in and new homes and apartments. There is constant construction and now a lot more traffic. So much so that it takes me a half hour at the least to get from one job to another
I cant afford a house or apartment at all outside of a good deal with my friends dad who is my landlord.
Without my friend I'd still be at my parents house
I feel like im starting to get kicked out of my own town

Very happy Governor Cox didn't get to pass the subsidies.
Subsidies simply cause house price inflation because more money is available to buy homes.
For example, if you could afford $400k plus $50k in subsidies, you could offer $450k. Now the builder can sell the same home for an extra $50k. Those subsidies then increase taxes. You end up with higher-priced homes and taxes.
It's better to make the builder work more to make more. Streamlining the process of building creates more competition for builders to build more and price their homes more affordably to compete with other builders. This brings prices down.

Ive been here in Salt Lake for 59 years; let's say 40 years of any sort of paying attention:
It's grown way too much in this time! My beef with what's going on is these 4 & 5 level prison cells they call apartments; that bring in huge quantities of people in little sardine can apartments, (most don't speak English) it doesn't take a economical genius to see why they are doing that and some people really can't handle taking care of a real house, but wow are they nasty looking!
I feel they are going to bring heavy loads of crime too. we are in no way running out of room, maybe in the valley; dang drive out 30-40 min endless room! especially west.
Seems to be all about money, that's for sure.
Here is to hope that the powers that be will not just line their wallets with tons of cash but really try to make things affordable especially for the younger folks just starting out!
Most kids are living at home while adults; or both work and they to live in a 1 bedroom tiny place, and get sterilized so they cant have kids,
I think we have a even bigger problem that the lake drying up.

Utah to me was always a “best kept secret” one of the best places in the entire country…I especially realized this as I moved back in my early 20’s. Sure “we’re not close to California” as you mentioned….but let’s not hide the fact that it’s just a matter of time before we will be. California folks are coming here in droves. Our country’s open borders down south isn’t helping. We may not be Cali yet, but my feeling is that we sure as heck will be eventually. It’s just a matter of time before we get too populated, and politically speaking as states get overcrowded they start to be run like Cali…our state will get flipped to blue and then we become California with similar policy. I don’t want to believe it, and it may take a long time, but I have realized it’s inevitable. The “growing up” of the state is NOT a good thing.

Average??? Uh, the economy is #1 and has been in the top 5 for the past what, decade? Average.. lmfao what an idiot.. tell
UDOT to get their heads out of their ass and build highways that have zero red lights.. going back and tearing up roads that aren’t even a decade old is foolish, (bangerter highway, soon to be mt view corridor).. Utah should have followed suit like Vegas and Phoenix (1-215, I-315, I-415) meaning highways that circle the city.. (too late on the east side, but totally feasible west of mt view along oqqihor mountain range..) that is the salt lake valleys biggest chokepoint snd weakness is their local
Highway system.. look at i15 near point of the mountain.. LEHI had to freeze new building because the infrastructure couldn’t handle the growth! That’s insane to think about, LEHI could have been the next centerpiece of the SL valley for high rises, would have been cool to see in my lifetime

@@scottdsteele I'm surprised you ask. Supply and demand, as people move into a small area(nobody's moving to the desert, it's all in Moab and Wasatch) the cost of housing goes up and the wages stay low. Utah is particularly egregious about this right now, and where over 50% of our growth has come from in migration, we are highly incentivized to discourage new arrivals.
      Crime has been increasing.
      Homelessness is a problem.
I'm also not particularly fond of being approached my illegal Venezuelans in a Costco parking lot asking me for money, because that happened yesterday and it's happened to my friends in Salt Lake too.

I do not mean to be whatsoever, I'm responding to each and every comment here and at times it gets pretty overwhelming with how busy life and business and family gets. I read through each and every comment and I value what is shared. Thank you for sharing as well!
