  • Hi there,
For many of my sisters who are on the journey to embracing their natural hair, i'm sure that you may have come across at least one of the comments in this video. In this video I share how I would respond, this doesn't make it the right way, however if you're anything like me, I find that many a times I have walked away from comments and wishing later I had said 'this or that'! Did I miss anything ? I hope you find this video helpful please comment, like and don't forget to subscribe and remember.... Grey Is Okay x

People are often truly confused when you make a decision that suffers from theirs. They have been conditioned to fear being who they really are, and your authenticity is a threat to them. You have chosen to be a silver fox, and they don't understand that confidence.

I started detecting grey hair when I was 18 (hereditary, my dad was really grey when he was 21). I was bullied into dyeing it in my 30s. Now I'm really tired of it, so I've been looking at videos with brunette women who went grey. I feel motivated.

I'm a 26 year old hair dresser, I work at a wholesaler for licensed hair professionals.. I have a silver streak in the front that is getting more and more noticeable. I have gotten a few negative comments since I started growing my natural color about a year ago. Practicing self restraint by not coloring my hair even when I really want to has been the biggest challenge. But my hair is the healthiest it's ever been. Longest it's been since cosmetology school. It's crazy to me how many silver hairs I didn't know I had cuz I would change my hair so often.

Sparking strands of wisdom! I started going gray in high school... it's very hereditary in my faimly. I saw my cousin who let her gray grow out for her wedding and I went with it 3 years ago. Fake black to natural no blending. Women are more supportive, ask men and they get weird about it. I'm 35. I have pure white steaks at my temples. Gray everywhere. I don't really care what people think. I dig it.

Why let the hair dye companies make profit from our hair and put a "standard" of hair beauty for us to follow, and then we all run after their advertising van ?

I started going gray in 2019. I was so surprised at the amount of gray I had since I never allowed it to be seen and did my roots so very often. It was not my time and I continued with the dye. Then 5 months ago, I realized that was it and I had to quit. The first three months are the hardest. But I wore a ponytail and ignored it. Oh I also do a tiny little part of my crown in the part. This helped me not to focus on it often. After four months growth, it actually started making me happy when I saw the grays coming out. It is now sort of a fun experience to see the gray patterns as it lengthens.

Many of the chemicals in hair dye are carcinogenic!:
Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD): PPD is a common ingredient in permanent hair dyes and has been associated with allergic reactions. While there is some evidence suggesting a possible link between PPD and certain types of cancer, more research is needed to establish a definitive connection.
Resorcinol: Resorcinol is another chemical found in hair dyes, particularly in darker shades. It has been classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). However, the risk is considered low, and the evidence is not conclusive.
Ammonia: Ammonia is frequently used in hair dyes to help open the hair cuticle and allow color to penetrate. It is not considered to be carcinogenic on its own. However, it can release potentially harmful fumes, which may irritate the respiratory system.

I have had some very negative remarks made including one young man at work ask me if I was going to dye it as if there was something wrong with it. I simply responded with “would you ask a man if he was going to color his hair ?” I also wanted to grow into my age with gray hair and I do think it is elegant but I am afraid I am not strong enough. Since my hair is blonde and only darker in the back, no one has noticed my grow out and it’s been 9 months. It is absolutely liberating to not care and to still look great when I go out. I'm 6months into letting my grey hair and what's left of my natural colour grow out. I'm 54 and last week when I stated that I was intentionally growing out my grey to a work mate, I was told, you are too young looking to grow out your grey hair and I hate to tell you, women over 50 don't look good with long HAIR! I'm currently growing my hair and it's at waist length now and it's in lovely condition. (Had a trim last week) They laughed and told me I would look like a witch or a scaggy old tramp and continued to take the micky. I laughed it off and very nearly considered doing a henna treatment as that's all I've ever done. Then I thought no! I won't be tormented by someone who is my age, a fellow woman who dyes her hair black every two weeks to look so called young??? The moral of the story is, you are as young as you feel, stick to your own intentions, be happy that you have lived long enough to see grey hair and wise enough to embrace you own body as it is and be content. Other people's conviction about convention don't make them right. Loved this vlog, you look absolutely beautiful, simply stunning. A massive thank you from me.😘

I started going grey when I was 13 and now at the age of 39 I’ve been fully blonde for about 6 years because of all the silver I have! It just wasn’t worth dying my hair brown anymore as I have so much silver/white/grey! Maybe one day I will let the silver shine out, but it’s not something I feel I am ready to do yet. You look absolutely stunning and you rock your natural colour! How I can relate to some of the comments you have mentioned (when I leave my natural hair to grow out for a while !). Especially, with me being from a Sikh background lol.

Her comments made me more determined to go natural. I'm loving my natural hair it's really shinny and healthy. The white hairs are beautiful. I don't have to wash my hair as much. It's the best decision I've made in a long time and it's better for the environment. Thanks TGI

You look great with your grey hair!! And you know whats even greater: You dont put those toxins or your head anymore, that can cause cancers and allergic reactions! I am 38, going grey and i dont even have a choice cause i am allergic to all sorts of hairdye. I am even allergic to plants ( henna and indigo powder is a nightmare, face got swollen. And i am not allergic to anything else, so it started with hairdyes that i got this horrible experience of a swollen face. So for me its not even an option to think about it anymore. I am even so scared for hairdyes now cause of these experiences that i avoid hairsalons cause i cant even stand the smell of hairdyes it triggers a sick feeling. And that makes it very easy for me at age 38, since that happened to me i totally relax about my greys, cause i can just be myself for the rest of my life.

I cut my hair into a pixie. *I* love it, but some random follower on social media decided it was his business to tell me that "long hair suits you better". I'm sorry, but I didn't ask for your OPINION of my style choice. I'm married, my husband loves me and supports whatever hair/style I choose because he actually loves me. It is infuriating that people have the nerve to insult others so easily. Also, this person was shocked that I told him he was rude. "That wasn't my intention" he said. And instead of apologizing he unfollowed my account. Okay, BYE. Saved me the trouble of blocking you. Everyone, you feel free to be YOU. That's what's really beautiful! Authenticity.🙏💛

My sister keeps trying to get me to color my hair again. And I’ve had other people say oh I don’t like your hair gray. You should go back to coloring. Well, I’m sure my reasons are very similar to most of you ladies as to why I decided to stop coloring my hair I like it. I’ve told some of these people that one of the big reasons that I stopped coloring my hair was that in two weeks I had to do the regrowth again, and my hair was falling out more so I tell them you know what I’d rather have gray hair than no hair! I’ve noticed many women because they color their hair so much and menopause. They literally look like they’re going bald. They are thinning out so much and I think to myself are you gonna continue to color those 10 hairs you’ve got on your head. Of course I would never say that to them. My hair still sheds because I have hypothyroidism which I take medication for but it sheds a whole lot less and it’s so nice not to have to deal with colored hair that can get so dried out etc. etc. so don’t let anybody tell you you look bad if you like it, that’s all that matters.

I'm 62 and my grey hair does make me look older. I haven't colored it since November 2020 (due to covid) and my husband keeps asking me when my next appointment is. btw, he is completely grey. In the past when my roots have shown a lot, my best friend laughs at my hair. My dad constantly comments about how young his wife (my stepmom) looks. He makes negative comments about my looks. I think it makes him feel old when I look old. These comments make me feel bad and the pressure to try to look younger is intense. I'm so tired of the time and money it takes to keep up appearances but I think I have to do this gradually.

    • @TheGreyIndian

I agree take your time, I was fortunate to not have that kind of pressure and I can’t begin to imagine how it feels when the people who are closest to you are going against something you strongly believe.
When you do decide to do it, you have to try and be confident and own the decision, turn it around on them about how you’re not hiding your true self. I wish you luck with it and if you can pop over on to Instagram there is a huuuuge community of us silver sisters and trust me you won’t need approval anywhere else once you have us supporting you xxx

But I am standing firm on my decision to not be a slave to the box dye. I wish you the best of luck. Remember....you have a community that is here to support you! Best wishes and blessings to you. • @Xana_K
      @Xana_K 3 года назад +2

You're friend and your dad don't sound like very nice people to laugh and make you feel bad. They should be supportive. It's your body and your choice completely.
I think most women are working on that fear. I see it everywhere, it all comes from fear of looking old.
I started my grey hair journey when I was 24, I stopped using hair dye (I'm 30 now) and it's because I saw my nans hair go completely white and I absolutely loved it. I thought wow she looks great, she doesn't look old because she doesn't dress old and takes care of her face, and she's got a nice trendy hairstyle. She looks fabulous. And I thought to myself you know what, it's inevitable we're all going to have this grey hair and I want to look like her as I age. I think it's beautiful.

Great video and great tips on what to say when people comment.
I think your hair looks stunning with it's natural highlights.
I'm only 2 months into my journey and can't wait until I have more white/silver hair as I love the little bit I have now and the way it shines and catches the light. I do sometimes spray it with a brown colour as it is still at the "lockdown, have you not got to the hairdressers look" but as soon as it gets long enough I will be rocking it and will probably use temporary wash out dye on the awful dyed brown ends.
If you've not heard of "Empowered Greys" here on YT you should get in touch with them so you can feature on their channel of silver sisters who have gone natural. It is so inspiring to see so many beautiful natural women celebrating their natural hair in those videos.

@@TheGreyIndian today a young lady complimented me for my natural grey colour. She asked me if I dyed my hair. The reason why she was so surprised was my age. Being young, in your 40's + going grey = a cool statement.
You named it and it is probably the most important reason to start while you are young.
Still, from what you have shared, your friends/family don't seem to be always very supporting.
