One clarification I want to add. Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2 was written before Dawn of the Dead even came out. After Argento’s version of Dawn was so popular in Italy they decided to release it under the name Zombi 2, forever linking the two otherwise unrelated Zombie franchises into one massive mess of a Living Dead/Zombi family!

I think the prologue (boat arriving in New York harbour) and epilogue (Zombies invading New York) were shot after someone had seen 'Dawn' and put in there to suggest 'Zombie' was a prequel explaining how the zombie epidemic started.

"The Return Of The Living Dead" is an absolute classic, and in my opinion it's easily the best Zombie film ever made, it created the concept of zombies craving human brains, and had great practical effects and a good cast, three of them going on to pop up in a few "Friday The 13th" sequels. But the original - "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead" are fantastic too. You can't beat 1980s punks vs zombies, or a retro shopping mall full of hungry undead. 🎃👍

A few years ago, before his death, Romero made a comic series that seems to be a kinda/sorta sequel to Night of the Living Dead called Empire of the Dead. IIRC Barbara managed to survive being taken by the zombies, rescued by for undead brother that somehow remembered who she was, apparently some zombies managed to retain at least some of their memories and didn't have a constant hunger for human flesh. Oh and it involved vampires.

    • @incredibleflameboy
      @incredibleflameboy 8 месяцев назад +1

It was a tie in to land of the dead. I think the idea was that they would prime fans to consider zombies as retaining more humanity than was expected so Bub wasn't just a fluke. The trouble is that it was largely pointless as a story because it retconed a bit too much and stands outside of his continuity as a result. It's not particularly easy to get your hands on these days so if you have it hold on tightly to it

@@theunknowngamer5477 I'm not really sure what you're asking. The comic was written by Romero as part of the night, dawn, day and (upcoming at the time) land franchise, as part of the main continuity. It didn't include concepts from anything outside of Romero's stories and only pushed the idea of intelligent zombies similar to big daddy but ignored that it was totally unheard of for ghouls to achieve sentience outside of a single persons science project by implying that all of the ghouls had the capacity and ability from the start. That part in return of the living dead, when a zombie described what it was like to be dead, is one of the most horrorfying scenes in zombie movies, because of the deeper implications of it. It basically said it was non stop pain in death and hurt really bad to be a zombie and insinuates that if the zombies were not suffering so bad, they could reason better and show restraint.

The Return of the Living Dead broke the fourth wall, which I found very amusing as a kid. They couldn't kill the zombies by simply striking them in the head. "You mean the movie lied?!" Their solution of burning the zombies ended up creating more zombies. You think it would be hard to up the stakes in a zombie movie, but they pulled it off very well. Making the punks protagonists was also a nice touch. The only bummer was making it an unwinnable situation even if nukes were used.

In TWD, we have a world where NOTLD was never made, thus not spreading the lore that would have aided the survivors. Another intriguing What If? would be: What If Russo and Romero had kept on as partners, and the film had not fallen into the public domain? Granted, NOTLD and bizarrely, It's A Wonderful Life, arguably benefitted from public domain showings keeping interest in them. But I really wonder where the franchise would have gone. The listing - the masterful listing - you did here almost seems like a zombie infection itself, with sweeping in so many completely disparate films. Pulgasari? Heh. I wonder if the Kims demanded an import of this 'Zombi' sequel only to realize it was their own kidnapping-based production (seriously, they kidnapped the film maker), probably with some odd dubs to make the zombie angle work. As a fanfic writer of 25 years, I can honestly say: You couldn't make this shit up.

Zombi 2 is not a prequel to Dawn Of The Dead, it was an unrelated film in production the same time as Dawn, it's title was Nightmare Island, when the Romero film (Titled Zombie: Dawn Of The Dead in Italy) came in 78 it made a lot of money in Italy, so the Fulci film was retitled Zombi 2 by the producers to cash in on the success of the Romero film without Fulci's knowlege or consent, Zombi 3 is debatable as a sequel to Zombi 2, but Zombi 4,5,6 etc are all seperate films just retitled at the 11th hour in cash in, Michael Lee who ran british distribution company VIPCO had to retitle the Fulchi film to Zombie Flesh Eaters to avoid being sued.

That being said, you missed the classic by Mr. LOTR himself Peter Jackson called Dead Alive in USA release and BrainDead in it's native New Zealand. It's the classic tale of the Sumatran rat monkey, or something like that, and how it's bite causes a living dead curse that gets out of hand quickly in a small town. It features a reluctant hero and one of the best zombie slaughter scenes ever filmed featuring a lawn mower. And it's a love story too! The R rated US version was 85 mins but BrainDead in all it's uncut glory was 97 mins and those 12 mins all pure blood, guts, and gore that the US wouldn't let into the R edit. Pretty amazing ish. This video tickled my brain in all the right ways. I love that you went knee deep into the 80's horror movie naming convention.
Regarding Pulgasari, had no idea it was once labeled as a "Zombi" series entry. Did you know that the Director of that movie was literally kidnapped by Kim Jong-il ? He was a fan of the directors work and more or less held him captive for a few years so he could make custom pictures to Kim Jong-il. It's not a joke, it really did happen. The actor for the monster named Pulgasari actually had been different monsters in several Godzilla films prior. He (Kenpachiro Satsuma) at least did not seem to have been kidnapped. The movie it self is a decent Godzilla clone, set in 1600's Korea.
A fun thing about the Night of the living Dead remakes. It is only the Tom Savini one that is official. I think it may have something to do with the Public Domain controversy. Basically, someone at Romeros department made a huge mistake when filing the copyright for the "Night of the living dead" title/IP. Which made the movie void of a valid copyright at the time of release. And trying to solve that at the time was supposedly really expensive and time consuming. So in theory Romero have not made a dime from the original movie. That may be partly why the original cut of the movie is basically available on every streaming platform ever. Public Domain movies can be distributed however one wants, without having to pay anything.
Also, One cut of the Dead is one of the best horror comedy's ever made. DO PLEASE watch it!
Have anyone here watched any of ther unlicensed Night of the living dead spinoffs? I've tried to watch two of the animated ones, some of the worst movie experiences i've had. And i have seen a lot of trash cinema.

I adore Night of the Living Dead
I tried selling a limited series based on movie to Netflix but never got the meeting setup. There's a few friends who read the first three episodes who really wanna film or animate them. It's one of the few things I wrote myself that I'll go back and read just because I loved how scary it turned out. Really wish I could have it made. Very anti walking dead where characters basically just go from one hiding spot to another. It really takes its time building the fear of not knowing. The fear of losing power and contact with the rest of the world.
I upped the racial tension by making Benjamin Palestinian and the Cooper practicing Judaism and his Wife Helen and sister Kara being Jewish (I did this in 2010s based on a bojack horsemen joke where two guys had a Palestinian hat and other had an Israeli hat and they wanted to know what a girl had to say about the tension between the two).
Made Johnny (who switches roles with Barbara) a depressed ptsd 20 something African American seeing things that aren't there.
Tommy became Thomas, a retired fire fighter who owns house and is semi racist about all the races in his house. He just wants to reunite with his wife Judy, a cop stuck in town twenty miles away. She would show up with an African American partner (hinting to be Peter from Dawn) as well as Peter's friend Roger (a pilot) and his local newswoman GF at the end with plans to fly a chopper someplace safe.

In the UK, it was released as 'Zombies: Dawn of the Dead". And 'Zombie 2' was 'Zombie Flesh Eaters'.
There's also several films which got released as 'Zombie 6'... including 'Absurd' and 'Devil Hunter'.

I'm going to have to check out NotLD resurrection. I live in Wales and the local town is like a Romero film. I actually have a DVD of it but never watched it because I thought it was just a remaster instead of a reboot of sorts.

Bit late to the party with this response.
To my knowledge there's two more cuts of 'Dawn of the Dead' in addition to the three that are widely available . . There are the "Theatrical", the "European" and the "Workprint" version.
There is also an "R" rated version of "Dawn" that George A. Romero did as a possible release on a double bill with "Creepshow". Test audiences reactions were so bad to the cut gore, that George and Richard Rubinstein dropped the idea and the movie hasn't been seen since the initial test screening. It might still be around, mislabeled or forgotten, in a storage room.
The second cut that I know of is a Japanese version of the movie which adds a prologue/voiceover explaining how the dead have returned to life and are attacking the living. It's also supposedly longer than the Dario Argento "European" version, but shorter than the North American "Theatrical" release, but I don't know what scenes were added/cut to make the Japanese version.

The movies are not set in the same universe though in each the events still happen. In land, Dawn does happen but it happens in the early 2000s as the biker gang leader from Dawn is seen in land. The only difference is the times the events happen, but they still happen. Any non Romero version of his films are not in his universes.
