From the context of the time, I'm sure many people were annoyed by Barbara's catatonic state and being the 'damsel in distress', but from a modern perspective I actually do like that it shows that not everyone will turn into a badass come the apocalypse. Some people really do experience trauma by choosing the 'freeze' portion of 'fight, flight or freeze'. I found Ben's care and protection of her, even though she was a strange woman he didn't know, to be very touching. Some people do not respond to trauma or stress well, and that does not make them any less worthy of survival.
It's also realistic that someone like Barbara would freeze up. Her introduction to this apocalypse was her brother's death, which to her probably seemed like an outright homicide at the time. She didn't even know what was happening. Ben's introduction is a bit more stereotypically apocalyptic and he was forced to take action, as well as presumably never being around anyone important to him the way Barbara was. Ben entered the outbreak by killing a ton of the undead in one major attack. Barbara was forced to run, Ben was forced to fight; so they react very differently as the apocalypse begins to set in.

Watching this play made me have a huge crush on him, and we started dating shortly after. It's hard not love this classic masterpiece, really changed movies just like Jaws did.
That's a great story to tell. Imagine someone asks how you met and you just say "he was in a zombie play in school and I already liked him" So cute!! 💗
In hindsight, the cemetery zombie really is historic. The unsettling mouth curl, shambling movement, and cunning use of tools to kill so brutally yet effectively. I’m surprised he isn’t a horror icon.
to the fans he is....he actually teared up when he mentioned how many fans come up to him and say how much of a icon he is and he said he had no idea my role would of been such a big deal....may he rest in piece
Duane Jones was easily the best actor in this movie. One of the main reasons that makes this movie so impactful. His performance just seemed real and believable. No offense to the other actors but you could tell it was just "acting".
James should’ve also mention his big jump in personality, it’s amazing how more enthusiastic he sounds and how much more natural he sounds, I love this man
I honestly can't believe how far James has come. I remember when he quit his job and how happy he was. I surprisingly... don't quite remember the OG Night Kill Count but it's so nice to see it again as a reboot.
Which means you're also pretty close to the Monroeville Mall where Romero filmed Dawn. Side note, James says "Go Panthers" at 7:28. As a Pitt alumni, I really appreciate it, but actually Romero went next door to CMU... But to be fair, who wants to say "Go Tartans"? It's a fabric pattern, not a mascot. It's not a color either, Carnegie Mellon, you silly nerds.
@@sebchambers6055 He said he reserves the right to go back on counting Zombies in later films if it gets too crazy. He'll go back on counting Zombies in Dawn 🤣
yup, kudos to him. I hope this video gets more views than the original kill count, because this is an important film and we gotta support James and his great work.
Man Night of The Living Dead has to be one of the best and most important American films in history the weight this thing carries never diminishes I loved this video James can't wait for the next two
I love that he’s doing reboots because he always hints that he knows his old ones weren’t as good as his new ones so i’m glad he’s finally getting to them. I love James.
It’s always funny seeing old horror movies that were once considered so horrifying. I remember my parents showing me jaws for the first time and I, a massive animal nerd born in 2001, was like “this isn’t scary, it’s just a shark that looks very fake.” Crazy how times change.
I was born in 1982 and it was the same. I remember my father telling me he was terrified as a kid of Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of Dracula. I was dumbfounded as to how he could be scared of something so lame, compared to Freddy or Jason hell even Jaws. Weird how each generation becomes more and more callous to some things.
@@moonooze6171 That reminds me of a cartoon - the Ducktales reboot, I think - where a bunch of actual monsters like vampires and witches have to dress up like puppets and clowns in order to scare people in the modern day.
I'm excited for the reboot of Freddy vs. Jason kill count, maybe James has changed his thoughts about it because that movie is awesome, a better mashup than BVS was
Am I the only one who had a crush on Ben? Man was so handsome and bamf and I wished Duane Jones had gotten more roles like he deserved. He really was a great actor.
Nope, I've got mad respect for him as an actor!! Easily my favourite character in Night bc of his versatile acting and badassery! His character would not work with anyone else. Duane Jones IS Ben, just as Ian McKellen IS Gandalf. Iconic. Shame he never got enough preesh. Everyone acting in this movie is great, but just Jones sheer performance easily gives him top billing imo. It would be nice if we got a prequel purely about Ben someday. In the movie, his monologue just encapsulates the hopelessness of a zombie apocalypse.

Johnny's death is a fantastic example of how to set audience expectations low. The level of brutality this movie can get as it goes on, in particular the zombie that gets stabbed in the head and of course the death of the mom, and the first death is a bloodless and kind of "classic" horror kill, very in line with something we'd see in films from the 40s or 50s. I imagine that kill was your usual "Oh, wow" thrill ride kill but then that skinless skull made people realize this wasn't your usual fun day at the movies.
You guys ever watch a movie for the second time, and intellectually you totally know how it's going to end, but on some emotional level you hope it ends differently THIS time? I experience that with the end of this film every time I revisit it.
I knew the entire, "They're coming to get you Barbara..." scene by heart YEARS before I ever saw this movie.... You can thank Halloween II for that! lol

Freaks (1932) is pretty scary imo.
Jaws will always be scary for me because of the opening scene. and Quint's death. Both freaked me out as a kid.
