- From a 1988 concert, in which Larry performs some of his famous guitar solos. You'll hear those from:
The theme to the television series "Hill Street Blues"
Kid Charlemagne (Steely Dan composition)
Don't Take Me Alive (another Steely Dan composition)
Put It Where You Want It (The Crusaders).
There's a good reason why Fagen and Becker used Larry on so many recordings. He is simply the best there is at coming up with incredible solos.
Wow! A really old post! But you are right Vic. There is a reason that SD went through a baker's dozen of side men in the studio. You can beat your head against the wall trying to explain what you want to hear, or start bringing in lead men one at a time to hear if they have the refreshing and surprising first take on your mix. I think chances are, you will finish and find your sound better and faster with the interview.
Also great at the Rhythm charts, Fagen used him on most of his Solo albums as well
He also arranged and wrote all the charts. Man is a genius and living legend.
Yeah it's because ONLY Larry Carlton can get away with it! It still blows my mind!
@@glennsnewmark In my estimation, that deserves songwriting credit.
What I love about LC is that he's a really a composer who's also a great guitarist. It's not about shredding or showing off with a ten minute solo, it's about adding something special to the tracks he plays on - it could just be a couple of phrases, but they're always memorable.
Exactly, in the tradition of a Carlos Santana or David Gilmore.Like Santana said ,they challenge him to a duel and he slings them dead with 3 notes.
What kills you is Larry said he improvised the solo on Kid Charlemagne. Can you imagine being able to just casually improvise a solo that ends up being on most peoples' "greatest solos of all times" short list?
Most of Steely Dan guitar solos are improvised, if you look around on you tube you can find alternate takes of the guitar solos . Its fun trying to reconsile those alternates with the songs that we know and love.
@@patrickwhitehead9931 I think completely improvised may not really apply here. The chord progression behind the solo obviously is arranged. It would be interesting to know if Fagen and or Becker arranged it or Carlton. I'm guessing Carlton because it sounds like his solo work. Great players and writers all.
the best guitar player Steely Dan ever had in my opinion
Same comment I made above: I just saw the Dan last night at the Beacon. Huge props to Jon Herington always KILLING these parts but listening to Larry play this, there's just something about it and the way it flows. Amazing.
Jon Herington does an incredible job!
skunk
@@franksrok5843 skunk "night by night" is sick... from pretzel logic lp.
Jay Graydon
Love Larry. Let’s not forget that he toured and recorded with The Crusaders back in the 70’s. Awesome talent!
The man shreds on Kid Charlemagne like he's taking a walk in the park. Makes mastery look effortless...*bow*
Yip, skilful people always make it look easy
I got chills when he rolled straight into the outro solo of Kid Charlemagne. This is delicious...
Brian Anderson I never get tired of pulling Carlton or Ritenour up on RUclips. Every few weeks just to hear clean expert musicians.
Yeah, I thought he gonna do the main riff for a few bars more, but he went straight in. So sublime!
The intro to “Don’t Take Me Alive” always gives me chills.
listen to that section on a high quality music equipment
you can die after that
Im still trying to nail that one down on guitar.... I hate him. I hate the guitar.... I suck.
Yeah, that's a bad ass intro.
@@notdn It is one of my very favourite Steely Dan songs and the somewhat clear AND distorted guitar sound always gets me, it's crazy. And Jeff Porcaro on drums...
@@walterlevesque4879 still trying? He didnt even nail it here
Man that’s a funny looking 335 he’s playing there.
Valley Arts
I was wondering about that guitar- it’s missing something at the end, those winding pegs, whatever you call them.
It was the eighties, gotta give him a break, I guess. Although he kind of went off script on Don't Take Me Alive, I thought, not my favorite version of his.
It’s a 335 lite
Looks like a stratocaster. The 335 is close by.
What a skilled guitarist. Larry loves what he does and it shows. This is so classy. "Thank you Larry for sharing your gift of guitar with the world."
Is he the guitarist on The Rockford Files theme?
Hill Street Blues
Hill Street Blues

I've got those
Hill Street Blues
Pure shredding. That Kid Charlemagne guitar solo is priceless.
Killer. Always my favorite
remember back in the day, when all hit TV shows had their own killer, instantly-identifiable theme songs? Magnum PI/Simon & Simon/Hill Street Blues/et. al. I'm pretty sure Larry Carlton played on most of them.
This was back when real musicians composed, performed and recorded these iconic tunes in very short time periods and did it like it was nothing. the late 70s -+ mid 80s was the golden era of the LA Session musician and so many great players and tunes came from that era.
I believe Larry played the guitar on the first "Law and Order" theme.
He and Mike Post (The writer of all the classic music you listed) are very close friends.
Hill Street Blues theme also had the best lyrics.
Yeah the theme song was a serious part of the shows back in the day
No he didn’t.
Larry only did two.
Dan Ferguson played the 70s Post themes and Steve Watson played on the 80s themes.
The only musician all Mikes stuff is Lee Sklar.
0:00 Hill Street Blues
1:34 Kid Charlemagne
2:58 Don't Take Me Alive
3:50 Put It Where You Want It
The sound of The Royal Scam. Larry's guitar is the major force on this album, unusual for a session guy to really stand out on any Steely Dan album. Also don't forget the solo from "Everything You Did"... where Donald name-checks the Eagles, around the same time the Eagles sang "They stab it with their STEELY knives but they just can't kill the beast".
thanks for Musical knwolledge!! (sorry, my english is so bad, but Steely Dan are my Musical heroes beside Beatles, Brahms, Frank Zappa and not to Forget the old German classicians)
I tried to read the book "Naked Lunch" (where the Name "Steely Dan" Comes from -but that book was too decadent for me - but now I remember Steve Vai from the Album "Passion & Warefare" the song called "The Audience is listening" (is funny) - greetings!
+Winston Beech Turn up The Eagles, the neighbors are listening ;)
+JacFlash it´´s nice corresponding with real experts of Music, in 2007 in Stuttgart, Germany I had the honour of sitting right in front of Steely Dan and we listened to the incredible sounds they made (but only sometimes I also liked the song "NEW KID IN TOWN") - but if you want to see something funny about Steely Dan, you have to look on RUclips to so called "Shreds": Steely Dan are out of practice - starring Carlton or Harrington?? With Kind regards from me
Look up The Daggers of Megiddo. This is where the Steely knives reference comes from. Only these 7 consecrated knives can kill the anti-christ. Knives of mere steel cannot do it. The entire Eagles song is about the first church of satan, formerly the "Hotel California". Also, Steely Dan is a marital aid from a porno I believe.
My favorite guitar intro of all time is on "Don't Take My Alive." I've heard it hundreds of times and it still blows me away.
LC is the best all around guitarist I've ever seen. The dude has a knack for _always_ hitting just the right notes.
[Makes bowing motion] I'm not worthy!
I agree about "Don't take me alive", but "Kid Charlemagne" is just a fantastic solo too. Besides, I must say that I just discovered that the "Bad sneakers" solo (in Steely Dan's "Katy lied"), maybe the most emotional guitar solo ever recorded, is played by Walter Becker ! I've been a Steely Dan fan for 35 years, and I was so sure it was LC who was playing it !
Agreed. In fact, Royal Scam is just full of wondrous guitar playing ( and bass playing - just listen to Chuck Rainey on KC) and I haven't tired of it since buying it in Belfast in '76. Doubt I ever will.
one of my fav all-time guitar intros... and his tasty licks throughout. That song is so underated, should be must school them on this fare
I totally agree!
Fagan sure can spot talent, can't he? Carlton's not the only one, how about Michael McDonald? And there are others too.
Once again, the stupid directors and film editors TOTALLY screw it up. This is an iconic guitar solo! Who cares what the drummer is doing? Photograph and focus on Larry Carlton's hands, for Pete's sake!
Those of us who appreciate all the fine players in the band
Kid Charlemagne . . . endless greatness that will stand the test of time hands down.
Gives me the chills, listening to those licks and realizing that my fav SD solos were from the great Larry Carlton. Thank you Larry for the hours and years of listening pleasure.
Guitar God🎸❤
Uff que gran intro la de don't take me alive
Me too with the chills
GOD, I love Larry Carlton's playing. It's just perfect. Mesmerizing to me.
The intro to "Dont take me alive" is a statement about the human condition . The hopes, disappointments, tge struggles to find kove and meaning and the eventual surrender to life as it is. Harrowing, heroic and gut wrenching, masterful pertrayal by exquisitely sensitive musician. Vale Larry...
Agree 100%! That solo made DTMA my fave Dan song, it's beautiful and painful.
Fantastic playing by Larry Carlton. His solo in 'Kid Charlemagne' was genius......and is fairly difficult to play..
Kid Charlemagne and Larry's lick... never tire of hearing that one!
I just saw the Dan last night at the Beacon. Huge props to Jon Herington always KILLING these parts but listening to Larry play this, there's just something about it and the way it flows. Amazing.
Jazz guitar simply kicks ass!!!!! Music that takes you places is priceless!!!!!
Love this!!! It is too bad he didn't include the theme song from Magnum P.I. as he was the guitar soloist in it.
No that is Steve Watson on Maagnum.
I never knew the theme to Hill Street Blues was so tight- I don't remember those solo's from the TV show version!
...a Rolls Royce of a guitar player... just something...!!!
What a fabulous guitar player..always loved his contributions to Steely Dan over the years.
No one looks happier while playing guitar than Mr. Carlton
That is so true - I never really thought about it but you are bang on the money! Mind you, most of us would be looking pretty pleased if we could come up with half the things Larry does :-)

Just wow...Larry Carlton was the unsung hero on a lot of Steely Dan classics- he deserves a lot of credit for many of their arrangements.
Larry shows what an extraordinary musician he is here in this amazing performance! Bravo guitar virtuoso Larry Carlton!
What beautiful, melodic playing. And he has the ability to be absolutely FEROCIOUS as well (as in Don't Take Me Alive"). One of The Greats, hands down.
WOW! How’s that for a Tour de Force? Interesting how his Dumbles have changed over the ensuing years from featuring a fair amount of gain to a more contemporary cleaner tone. Always great tone!
lol @ all the head bobs. If he had more hair, he'd have made a great 80s hair band guy ;-) (kidding...LC is fantastic, huge fan)
Heard the Kid Charlemagne solo back in the mid-70s and had to figure out how to play it note for note with a turntable - tone arm up and down about a million times. Where was Rick Beato when you need him?
I have always loved Larry Carltons playing since being a kid when my older brother used to play his Room 335 song and album. For years the Kid Charlemagne solo was one of my top favorites then I learned it was Larry Carlton who came up with the lick and payed it on the album. Although his concerts are way to short, always try and see him when he comes to town. Kick ass Larry!!!
This is awesome - Carlton is a genius. Kid Charlemagne solo is my fave of all time.
He’s like holdsworth if holdsworth played something that could move you emotionally
that tone! Mere shredders take note -- this is called TASTE!
lol
only shredders take note? there are a lot of bad musicians our there and they're not just shredders lol
TELL THAT TO CHRIS POLAND= HE SHREDDS WITH EMOTION
sure does. early yngwie was all heart too. now not so
much lol. another shredder with heart: tony macalpine
This comment aka “playing fast means nothing.” I can smell your high horse shitting from here
I could watch this all day on repeat. So much tone and emotion through those notes, and I love when he starts tearing it up at 5:40 😂
Only Pete Christlieb'S SAX SOLIS on Deacon Blues & FM are as good
Nobody better out there today. LC is a jazz guitarist nonpareil, and that band is super to boot!
I started listening to Larry Carlton because Guthrie Govan made a 2 minute video…😂😂
Larrys’ playing just makes me feel great!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This is fantastic. So many fond memories. Maybe I'm being selfish but I wish he could've included the solo from Third World Man as well.
At my advanced age, I've finally decided to tackle the Kid Charlemagne solo; being able to see his left-hand positioning sure helps!!
Oh, and lest we forget.... TONE, TONE, TONE!!! Larry could plug a bottom-of-the-line Squier into an AM radio, and he'd STILL sound amazing! Gahd, this guy raised the bar in so many ways. :-)
Steely Dan's greatness was predicated on using great musicians. Larry Carlton was awesome for them. What a great guitarist.
Sounds like every other Jazz Guitarist. Just has some mythology from playing for corporate rock band Steely Dan.
Every other jazz guitarist wishes they could sound like Larry Carlton...
Crusaders, “put it where you want it” ...then a big ol chord and a solo to begin a SDan song...awesome...comes no better!
I kinda like LC’s smooth playing ... sorta like a Chinese ink/watercolour with the ink bleeding into the paint, uno? Buttered soul!
Sax player is the great Ronnie Laws (formerly EW&F in early years).
No it isn't, that's Kirk Wahlum
Thanks for saving me the trouble. Haha. Secondly, I don't ever remember Ronnie Laws playing with E W & F???
@@kevinmanns7170 thank you. I came into the comments to see who was playing sax.
What a sound this guy gets out of that guitar of his.
It's so weird! Only Larry Carlton can make these guitar solos sound like GOLD! You can get any other guitar player, myself included, who is careful about making sure to learn the right notes, and people will be ignoring it because it just won't have that same magical flare that Larry some how manages to put into it! When he plays this stuff, everyone is in awe, but if another guitar player does it, people yawn! LMAO! I'm a huge fan of this man's, but my style is nothing like his!
This guy kills it! Great job sir.
I saw this tour at Cornell University, NY. I think he was wearing that same outfit even. Amazing!
The caliber of musicians on display here is immense
What? 47 thumbs down..... Clueless individuals!
Some guitarists know their guitar so well they essentially make it "sing", Larry is one of the few who does this well.
The "Foreplay" guy. Doing his Steely Dan riffs. Unbelieveably talented guitar player.
Are you referring to the wildly talented Jay Graydon?
San Francisco 1987
Guitar - Larry Carlton
Saxophone - Kirk Whalum
Bass - John Peña
Drums - John Ferraro
Keyboards - Terry Trotter
The year after the concert on April 6, 1988, Larry was working at his Hollywood Hills home when he saw a dog run past, followed by two teenagers. When Carlton went to close an open office door, one of the boys stopped and fired a gun, shooting him in the neck at point-blank range.
''I can tell you exactly what I was thinking,'' Carlton said recently.
''I didn`t lose consciousness. I walked about 10 steps and I laid down on the floor and I said, `Jesus forgive me my sins and let`s go home.` I honestly thought I was going to die.''
Carlton was lucky to have survived, but he suffered severe nerve damage and lost one vocal cord. He was also left wondering whether the real fatality wouldn`t be his career.
Carlton described his recovery as ''really painful. My left arm was paralyzed. There were no muscles in that arm. I had to start from scratch. There was a time when I could not squeeze toothpaste with that arm.'' It took more than six months before he could play more than a few notes at a time or speak above a whisper. Now, he says, in clear, strong, though slightly raspy tones, ''I am completely, 100 percent back.''
ok...we know he's a guitar god. Did he play that "Law and Order" Strat- track that we've all heard a zillion times? Why is this a compilation of all the tv soundtracks he's ever done? I'm just curious...I know he's a phenomenal player but it just seems to me that this is a bit over and above. I will say, though, that the Kid Charlamagne ride was exquisite. Credit given where credit's due, for sure.
Such a melodic guitarist! One of the best!
The great larry carlton, I know his music since 1980, I listen to him since then till today and beyond, he can play country, jazz, blues, rock and standard pop songs, he is really a great talent, thanks for sharing
this is brutally good
Anyone here in 2022 just wondering how we’re alive?
Mid 2024 now, still listening!
I love Larry and his music, but this MIDI guitar dead makes the instrument sound like geese farts on a muddy day or however, you want it is really annoying.
I recognize John Pena on bass, Greg Matheison on keys, Kirk Whalum on sax…but does anyone recognize the drummer? Is that Ferraro?
Gee I thought Larry's primary axe is a 335 Gibson. I don't think I have ever seen him play anything else. Now when you do session work I guess the producers may have a say so in which guitar you are playing.
Put it where you want it...shows where the musicians really have fun...I love the sax solo and how he gets into it with LC. It is defiantly the icing on the cake.
If you have a copy of the Royal Scam CD and a Gibson ES-335, be buried with them! I will!
Kid Charlemagne is my best guitarsolo all rock music!!!
When I heard Larry’s “Last Nite” tracks with his blues electric guitar, the universe moved a little ..... 👍😎🎸🇳🇿 I was lucky to see him in NZ a few years ago. The man is a maestro.
Kind of off subject but as a huge steely Dan fan, what’s the consensus on WB’s guitar playing? Thank you.
Please i want to know if this lick soundcloud.com/rhieskhiez/larryish-lead belongs to larry carlton
He even fukd up dont take me alive. Well maybe it was on purpose. It helps my ego as a guitarist to think he fukd up.... He didnt screw it up did he. Damn it!
I’m gonna go see Larry in a couple of weeks on his farewell tour. So I did a little research and actually Larry only played on six steely. Dan cuts.
No better resume' in the biz.
Loved him the first time I heard him on Billy Joel's first album he played a simple rock riff to Captain Jack
Hill Street Bluse は、アメリカのTVドラマのテーマソングでしたよね❓️
I think the best word to describe his solos are tasty! Anyone got a better word?
Probably the most prolific session guitarist... Everything he does is magical.
Saw Larry live in Sydney, small combo....fucking wicked!
Larry Carlton
Genius player
if you dont steely and the crusaders log off now
Larry smiles when he gets the start to dont take me alive on point. That shit is hard to predict, kudos
Brilliant - THIS is how to make every note count.
Well, at least I share his first name and receding hairline!
🤙Check out Larry's "Friends" album!
Possibly the slickest, coolest, physicist of a guitarist you will ever hear ¦¬D
"Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to Saturday Night Live!"
- The Crusaders
How can any human beat the "Don't take me alive" solo?
That's a bold statement, they used the best in the business. But you may be correct.
Larry Carlton is a great guitar player I totally dig his style of playing guitar .
Have been listening/ collector this great Mr. Room 335 album from early 70s. Greetings from Jazzman KUL!
I love music that breathes!!!!!
Yep Larrys album 335 the track is fantastic!!!
OK. I watched Hill Street all through its original run, and we've had LC albums since not long after that, but it was today, a century later, that I finally figured out that's his guitar work on the theme. Shoot me now.
Oh, and Don Imus used to use the original Crusaders tune as his bumper music back in the 70s. Larry's version is much better.
Larry Carlton, the King of Delicious Solos. Carlton's solos are song compositions in and of themselves. He's not completely unique in this, but he does it over, and over, and over, in song after song.
The man is a guitar wizard. Best session player ever!
I think this Larry guy deserves a better Steely Dan place. What's the personal issue here. Donald versus Larry OR Walter versus Larry. Talent and record sales deserve a semblance of recognition.
Lucky to be going to Larry Carlton at The Tower Theatre March 29th. World Class guitarist. Playing a couple of Steely Dan songs he help make famous. Hope to see u there
