Sudio musicianship is so deep within his bloodstream that his live playing sounds like the final cut from a recording session. That was absolutely perfect.
Funny how I was a big Beatles fan in my teens, then Led Zeppelin in my 20's, then Prog rock, Yes, Genesis, ELP, now I'm in my 60's and Steely Dan is my go to listen.
I wish I could remember the interview, I think it was Alice Cooper of all people, and he was asked what music did he himself prefer to listen to . And he thought for a minute and said, "When I want to hear something excellent I listen to Steely Dan".
I saw him last nite, was not good conditions but he was very good, I have been a fan since the 70's but finally got to see him...no one will ever do what he has done
I first heard of Larry Carlton in 1979. A guitar player who lived across the hall in my dorm told me Carlton was amazing studio guitarist and he played on Partridge Family albums!
The Iridium Room in NYC is incredible. I had the chance to see Jimmy Webb the renowned songwriter for Glenn Campbell and many more do a show there. What an evening, nice and wonderfully talented gentleman.
A great guitarist and clearly a wonderful guy. I first discovered Larry Carlton in the mid seventies when I purchased the Crusaders incredible album Those Southern Nights. The first song on the LP, Spiral, is my favorite (by far) and features fantastic Larry Carlton playing. I was also a Steely Dan devotee at the time and also loved The Royal Scam and Kid Charlemagne, but did not know Larry played on that record. I learned later on. Yes, his lead on Kid Charlemagne ranks up there with the greatest of all time. I listen to it frequently, and still have my original record! I think I also have the 8-track of it!! Larry is a master guitar player!!
I finally learned how to play this one. It took about one month to work it out and capture the nuances and dynamics for this lead. Hoping to perform it soon. Love Larry Carlton. One of my favorites.
Pretty incredible to hear that from 4 years ago. As he said: 40 + years later. He makes it look easy & natural, but imagine how hard that must have been when they invited him back after 35 years or so to play it live with them? I've sort of heard it on some YT homemade videos from The Beacon, but isn't there a nice recording somewhere? That's a very special moment in time! Thanks for another great upload. ♥
Fabulous talent. Not just technical skills but the ability to create and improvise...sometimes on the spot...and make such memorable solos. Him with Steely Dan were magic
Mr. Larry friggin Carlton a true American bad ass on the guitar I have all steely Dan‘s albums and several of his and this video was great to see he truly is an amazing musician he’s as good now if not better than he was back in the day
Mr 335. Amazing how many guys huge career leaps playing the Solos on Steely Dan songs. Theses were all great !!! Larry Carlton is one of the very best players in the world and has been since prob before 1970. Quote “ Steve Lukekather”. Thanks
Yes Larry, we ALL LOVE the original solo!...... Besides the original was an improv & you couldn't really improve it by doing another improv of it.... LOL! So...... thankyou for " going back" & "relearning it" ! .....You're the BEST!
So great to hear him get all the notes right. Ive seen actual Steely Dan concerts on youtube where they just get lost and turn it into a jam session having nothing to do with the original song.
The solo on the Dan record is one of the greatest ever recorded.
Yes it is
I go back and forth between it and Wind Cries Mary by Hendrix, also one take improvised. Can two things both be the greatest ever?
The solos!
Or Larry's guitar on "Don't Take Me Alive".
@@t.seank.529 In a word: Yes!
'The solo, which I improvised..." and every new generation of rock guitarist will some day stumble onto and shake their head in disbelief.
I don't believe that it was just improvised. But it makes a good story. 👍
Sudio musicianship is so deep within his bloodstream that his live playing sounds like the final cut from a recording session. That was absolutely perfect.
Because his solos and fills are so amazing, I often forget how good of a rhythm guitarist he is. This video reminded me.
Love it forever. Slick, tight, funky. Carlton makes it look effortless.
Not effortless...
Practice, practice practice
Look at his last line…”made it LOOK”.
I wore Royal Scam out. Still have it in the original vinyl along with several other of Dan's LPs. They're all great and Larry is such a great player.
Yeah, let's get a Haitian divorce!
Yes, I have about 4 copies now on my record shelves. Someday I will surely need another new one.
Funny how I was a big Beatles fan in my teens, then Led Zeppelin in my 20's, then Prog rock, Yes, Genesis, ELP, now I'm in my 60's and Steely Dan is my go to listen.
same but I'm 30 :D
It will be Miles Davis in your 70's😋
@@stettan1 I just downloaded some songs off "Bitches Brew"...lol.
You sound like my twin brother musically. 😂
I wish I could remember the interview, I think it was Alice Cooper of all people, and he was asked what music did he himself prefer to listen to . And he thought for a minute and said, "When I want to hear something excellent I listen to Steely Dan".
I could listen to him all night long and well into tomorrow…….and tomorrow night etc etc!!!
This sounds so good as an instrumental.
My guitar teacher once told me that the "kid Charlemagne" solo is the best. I have to agree.
One of the best and my favorite guitarists! Room 335 baby!
What a fantastic evening that must have been
The best of anything is always impossible to say but personally if forced to choose I would say this is the greatest guitar solo of all time 😁
I saw him last nite, was not good conditions but he was very good, I have been a fan since the 70's but finally got to see him...no one will ever do what he has done
His solo from Third World Man is great too.
Larry is a master guitarist.
Such a positive and fun message, he is great.
Just beautiful
Excellent !
One of the best solo's in pop/rock history, and in my personal top 5 !
I got to be his driver one time years ago when he was in my town with Bob James. Cool guy. Stood outside the restaurant and had a smoke with him.
Luv that song! Great playing Larry.
I first heard of Larry Carlton in 1979. A guitar player who lived across the hall in my dorm told me Carlton was amazing studio guitarist and he played on Partridge Family albums!
He has a really good bunch working with him here. He is great! I am so glad to say I saw him live way back in 2006.
The Iridium Room in NYC is incredible. I had the chance to see Jimmy Webb the renowned songwriter for Glenn Campbell and many more do a show there. What an evening, nice and wonderfully talented gentleman.
Fantastic !!
Larry is so cool - he makes it all look so natural and becomes part of the melody.
Simply BRILLIANT!
WOW, smiling from ear to ear! SO sweet!
Still got it!! Been listening to this OG Guitarist since his early days with Crusaders!! Nuf said!!
That should’ve looked a whole lot harder than he made it look! What a master of the fretboard. Great guy, great talent, great music!
I'm also a fan of his intro on Don't Take Me Alive.
OH Baby. Yes that’s some pretty sweet guitar stuff! Love it❤
rhythmn and lead.genius.
So amazing that it brings me to tears ❤

Larry, you can play this song ANY WAY YOU WANT!! It sounds great no matter what!
That's true, but it's nice to see him do it.
I just love it! Can’t get enough…
Love all the love here for LC! Heartwarming... he gave-and continues to give us-so much musical joy.
Fantastic! I would love to hear Larry of today’s take on the solo as well!
This makes me so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A masterpiece!

Loved that!
You can't relight the past. You can only remember it fondly.
That looked effortless 🎉
Too wonderful.
Get along Kid Charlemagne!
That made my week! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Guitarists like you make me sick😄😄😄😄(said the green monster inside of me!)
If you pull it off then you have sipped from the Grail my Friend.
Good luck on your future gig.
So good 😊 man I miss the music and the times would love to hear new stuff coming like this!
Fantastic! Thanks

Love Larry Carlton!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎼🎵🎶🎸🎶🎵🎼
Fantastic to hear this great solo more isolated.
Larry just makes me smile.
Playing is great but seeing someone smile like while playing is beautiful. #whatitsallabout

When he finishes the solo?

I saw Larry at Katz' in Austin around 1990. Legend before, then and after.
WOW!
Love it but actually would've appreciated an updated Larry solo. Much love Larry

Love it, so cool..
So good to see Pauly Shore, playing keyboards with Larry these days. I had no idea.
Along with Jay Graydon’s solo on Peg.
Nice drumming. Great feel.
Yes Larry, we ALL LOVE the original solo!...... Besides the original was an improv & you couldn't really improve it by doing another improv of it.... LOL! So...... thankyou for
" going back" & "relearning it" ! .....You're the BEST!
Incredible. Still though, would love to hear Larry do a new solo take on it today. I bet it would be mind blowing.

I just love going to a show and having the guy behind me keep yelling "woooo" during the music.
Irony?
Saw him at Seattle's Jazz Alley years ago.
Absolutely the best solo ever played bar none. It's totally perfect
My MAIN MAN!
