@@stevenponte6655 LOL it was a great TV show, and a great theme song. I'm playing the theme song....right now. Stay safe and greetings from Charleston, West Virginia. Semper Fi
My dad loved Hill Street Blues as well.. and he's gone now too.. theme song brings me to tears.. I'm 45 and still think this is one of the greatest shows. Miss you Dad
brings back lots of beautiful memories, my wife Liz and I just to work in downtown Houston We would rush home after work to get dinner ready and enjoy this show, we wouldn't miss one, Liz had a slight resemblance to Veronica Hamil, that hair line those bewitching green eyes, nose and those lips amazingly delicate and beautiful she gave me the most amazing gifts that life could offer, a beautiful daughter, her spitting image, and subsequently, 2 beautiful grandkids, she left us some years ago, Liz wherever you are, we are all ok and missing you lots, kids say that you are looking upon us from heaven, they are right, down here we are all looking upon you
brings back so many memories: our very small house, 2 cats, storm and heavy showers in november and then, with the fireplace burning late at night Hillstreet Blues................
I was just a child of 10 y.o. and watching the Italian TV, I was falled in my first love: was Veronica Hamel. What a wonderful woman! Elegant, classy and fascinating like this unforgettable soundtrack.
I watched HSB with my mom when I was a kid. Later in life I fell in love with Steely Dan and Mr. Carlton and discovered it was his guitar work in the theme song. Crazy how the world goes round. Miss you Mom ❤
My parents' favourite show back then. I was just looking for regular clips of the theme but stumbled on this- thanks for posting this performance. That was something special.
So beautiful and yea it does bring back a LOT of memories. It's the sound of the city in the 80's, still gritty and ungentrified. Be good to each other and Be Careful out There!
The reason people buy tickets to see Larry live is because he makes such beautiful music. An amazing guitar player! But first and foremost, great rhythm and melodies. The top most important things of writing music. "Rhythm, and Melodies." That is my Law. A Law I learned from the great Larry Carlton.
Lee Sklar, who played bass on the original record, plays this over on his YT channel. One of my all-time favorite shows AND theme songs. Thanks, Larry.
I never watched an episode of that show. But everytime it came on i would stop and listen to that lead guitar. Don't even think i finished the song but that guitar made it work.. Thanks Mr Carlton. Dont take me alive was another of my favorite songs due to your guitar. I'm kind of surprised you didn't do bootasiafi by Steely Dan
Larry, thank you for not ‘farting’ about with this perfect solo. For me, it is up there with the ‘Spiral’ solo and all the others....which we all know. This is such a perfect solo. Thank you.
The original affected my future career as a guitarist,, the beautiful lead tone of a 335 blended with the amazing clean sound of his Valley Arts Strat, a sound that I have spent my life trying to emulate, check it out on the YT video of the soundtrack recording, just magnificent.
Extremely high talented. I love this TV show theme, I used to watch Hill Street Blues in the 80's, I was a teen. It's probably one of the most beautiful creation of Mike Post. And this tune would be different without the guitar of Mr Larry Carlton. A huge artist.
Larry is such a consummate player. So I thought the theme song was written and played by mike post like many of his popular credited songs. Did he hire Larry to play and or co-write?
@@mxg75 Not Exactly. However it is true, Mike Post wrote "Hill Street Blues". Larry was not part of the band that created the basic track. He added his solo parts on top of the already recorded music. The bed of the track was recorded at "Smoketree Studios" in Chatsworth CA (my personal studio). I recorded/engineered Hill Street Blues". Mike asked me to take the 24 Track tapes to Larry's studio- "Studio 335". So I did. Larry and I spend an afternoon at his place. He used his Gibson 335 for the first half of the solo, and then swapped over to a Fender Strat for the middle section. It was definitely a memorable afternoon. I returned to my studio and mixed the track for Mike. Needless to say Mike loved the solo. The rest is history.
Mike Post is only the king of writing TV soundtracks. Larry is a champ in his own right.....deserved every accolade for his work with Steely Dan alone never mind.... yeah. This is a great lil anecdotal video clip most won't really grasp. Love it.
@@1800WorldNews You were the engineer on this? Fantastic! Guessing you worked with Mike on other stuff too? It's my fav of Mike's with a close follow of LA Law, and Greatest American Hero (also with Larry).....prob gotta put Magnum PI and Chips in there too somewhere.....but HSB was something else. Cheers
too bad--when done right, it soars, but here it is sluggish and dutiful. sounds like Larry with a high school band that means well but can't pull it off. Larry parrots his original solo but to no avail. the original with Mike Post is a mother, tho
Loved it. Memories of my wife and I putting our 2 little boys to bed for the night, then laying on the couch and watching Hill Street Blues
ha ha I knew as a kid when that song came on, it was time for bed!!!

This is beyond good. Nice memories from the 80s…

Memories of bedtime when I was a youngster. Talk about sentimental shit right here.

I never watched this show but undoubtedly one of the greatest themes from any show!
I’ve never seen it yet but I’ve been buying old tv series that I’ve never seen

Great but I wish Larry had also used the volume pedal here like on the original.
If I recall, the lead in Hill St Blues was a wind instrument not a guitar.
Was a synth, Moog Minimoog for the lead sound..
