Hey guys! I know there's no subtitles because, frankly, I don't have the 'know how' to do it myself accurately and efficiently 😩😫 and I couldn't find a company to translate Twi - English (3rd world problems) Anywhoo! This video is open to community contributions. If you can translate it, you can actually submit it so everyone can also enjoy. God bless you ❤️💛🖤💚

I am African American, and I have no idea what you guys were saying but I enjoyed this, seeing you guys be authentically yourselves, this video seemed culturally rich, a lot of things in America can be very culturally watered down. You guys made me wish I knew more about my roots...

    • @user-wn2es2ie8g
      @user-wn2es2ie8g 7 лет назад

eVaniwithaV if you want to know your roots you are Afro Native American. African people know where they come from. "African Americans " we're lied to!!! "They" want us to think we came from Africa, but we did not. Your roots are here my love. The Pocahontas Indians you see were already mixed with white. The real native Americans were black. It's there if you want to know the truth. You just have to look for it. The Christopher Columbus motto was " if we cannot get them out we will breed them out". If I was African American I would be proud but I am not. I am an aboriginal and so are 99% of African Americans. We were just lied to. I love you and wish you knowledge.

      @SuperBabiiT 7 лет назад +14

Kristina McDonald good for you Hun. You found your roots, and it's denial, I hope they accept you. But Africa for the win 💪🏿🙅🏾‍♂️

    • @MsDarkie93
      @MsDarkie93 7 лет назад +9

Kristina McDonald Looool so are you saying slavery didn't exist and west Africans weren't taken from Africa and brought to America because I'm confused? How would you explain the black people in the Caribbean? Where do we originate from?

    • @user-wn2es2ie8g
      @user-wn2es2ie8g 7 лет назад +5

jahhutrt lepeed Slavery absolutely happened. We were enslaved in our own land. Black people were every where, not just in Africa. I'm not in denial about anything, I just know the truth and I want my people to know as well and for everyone to see that we have been lied to. Knowledge is power and if we have knowledge and power we can heal as a people and and start to tip the odds back in our favor. I comment in peace and do not want anyone offended. Believe it or not. It's ok.

Laila: From Kumasi (her mum) &dad from the northern part of Ghana
    3. Laila: Born on Monday and shes called Adowa Asantewa. basically named after her mum
Suli: Born on Saturday and he's called Kwame

I am actually of Jamaican Heritage but I understand that during slavery, many slaves were taken from the West Coast of Africa to Jamaica. Throughout my whole 15 years of living, people always assume I'm Ghanaian and I am really good at the dancing. Plus, my Grandad looks Ghanaian❤... Moral of the story is that videos like this make me so happy because I love hearing Twi and I feel a deep connection through the screen lol 😂✨👑💪🏾

    • @danielarthur6974

History has it that the largest and strongest tribe in Ghana that resisted the colonial rule the most (The Ashantis/Akans) were the ones taken to Jamaica, Suriname, Seychelles, Guyana,... The language they spoke in this video is the Akan Language (Twi), about 70-80% of Ghanaians speak / understand it.. It's similar to that koromanti language.. 'Koromanti' is actually a place in Ghana, in the central region, close to the coast where slave trade mostly happened.
It's also believed that "Jamaica" was coined from the Twi sentence "jama yaka" meaning "I believe we are stuck here". When the slaves go to the Jamaican islands they thought they could escape until they realized they were surrounded by water and they started saying they believe they are stuck on the island forever.. Hence "jama yaka", Jamaica..
Lol I study Jamaican and Ghanaian history for fun

This is the funniest Ghana Tag and I loved it! Laila's vocabulary is extensive but Suli's pronounciation is better (excuse my English lol). I cringed when I heard Laila as a Ghanaian saying 'Yaa Gyasi' wrongly in her top 5 book videos!

    • @narkietetteh
      @narkietetteh 5 лет назад +1

You are right! That is the exact rating. Laila has a more expansive vocabulary which is not surprising seeing she was born and grew up in Ghana but Suli's accent and pronunciation is closer to it. I loved the tag tho so funny and I love both Laila and Suli they are making GH proud.

You guys both did well. Ashanti sista in the house. I wasn't born in Ghana n I've been there only once when I was 4 therefore more than 15 yrs ago, but I started speaking it at 10 when my sisters came from Ghana. I wonder how some people born in Ghana who even grew up there come to the western world n they end up not speaking it at all. So if they can't speak it what will happen to the next generation yet they call themselves Ghanaians. Ghana 1st. Having a different country's citizenship shouldn't make u forget who u are or at least stop u from trying to speak the language even if people laugh at u. Team Ghana all day everyday chale

    Question 1
Suli: the last time i went to ghana, it was like (about) -- did you hear? like (about) -- around 2014.
laila: so it's been a while since you've been?
    Suli: no it hasn't,
Laila: so it's been a while. it has been a while since Your eyes and your legs have seen ghana
Suli: no it hasn't. I spent a while there too. when i went i spent a long time there.
    Laila: got it
Suli: it's been like 2 years now. you'll see (who knows) I'll probably go next week
    laila: got it
    suli: i'll go next week
laila: As for me, i went to ghana the same time -
suli: last year , what were you doing there?
laila: around this same time last year is when I went to ghana
    Suli: you're acting "brofosem"(English-like). you don't know
laila : [same time as suli] i went to ghana to see my people, my family
Suli: you don't have people in ghana. what people do you have in ghana?
    laila: my family is there
suli: what community? where? where do they live?
    laila:kumasi
    suli: where in kumasi?
    laila: huh?
suli: You don't know! you don't know! where in Kumasi?
    laila: tech
    suli: where in tech?
    laila: tech
    suli: tech where?
laila: tech, in the same place
suli: i know people in kumasi i'll call them and ask them if they know your people. They don't
    laila: call and ask then.
    Question 2
suli: oh so, my dad is from kyebi, i've been there before and my mom is from apedwa
    laila: apedwa, okay
suli: apedwa, and so when she lived in community 2, tema
laila: ahh tema whitney is from tema
suli: we are not talking about people here(in UK), we're talking about real Tema people, where does whitney live in Tema?
    laila: i don't know.
suli: aha. now if i go to tema right now, they'll know i have arrived
    laila: you do what?
    [both laugh]
    laila: what are you doing?
    suli: answer the question
laila: so my mom is from konongo, she's an Ashanti
suli: she's what? say it right. she's an Ashanti
laila: she's an Ashanti, my father is a Hausa person, he's from the north. if i said i knew where i'd be lying
suli: wow. so you don't know where your dad is from?
laila: i said i don't know where my dad is from
suli: so you just know he's a Hausa person? You've never been there?
    laila: please no.
    suli: i won't say anything...
laila: yeah. you don't have to say anything
suli: [unitelligible] you haven't been to your people
    laila: yeah. i got it.
    Question 3
laila: they call me adwoa, i was born on Monday. They also call me asantewaa. my mom is called Akua asantewaa. Asantewaa and mother. So they call me adwoa asantewaa, what a beautiful name. come on now.
Suli: As for me, they call me kwame
laila: oh so you're a kwame
suli: yeah kwame. Kwame [unintelligle] amoako
laila: okay so kwame, what day were you born?
suli: oh of course everyone know that if you're kwame you were born --
    laila: what day?
suli: [laughs] laila, you [with an emphasis] you're testing me
laila: kwame, what day were you born?
suli: you can google it and see it
    Question 4
laila: as for me, i speak twi well, my twi is beautiful.
    laila: my twi is beautiful!
    Question 5
laila: what food do you like?
suli: chicken, anything with chicken in it.
laila: chicken is not a ghanaian food
    suli: balled rice
laila: i also love balled rice
suli: when did you eat balled rice?
    laila: the day before yesterday
suli: have you been to chop {probably a restaurant that serves ghanaian food}?
laila: what will i do at chop? if my-
suli: ah you haven't been to chop then-
    laila: my house is -
suli: ah you haven't been to chop so
laila: my kitchen is a chop
suli: just say you haven't been. you kitchen is not a chop bar, our kitchen is a kitchen.
laila: what would i be doing at a chop bar?
suli: chop bar is where real ghanaian people got to eat balled rice, not your kitchen.
suli: i remember i went to church, we went to a chop bar two hours
laila: in this country, what chop bar do you know?
suli: have you done two hours at a chop bar?
laila: in this country, what chop bar do you know?
suli: at the time i was in ghana
laila: what did you go to do there?
suli: i went to eat. They put in that thing {describing a bowl} and every sits down to eat
    laila: okay i got it
suli: you eat your balled rice with a spoon
laila: you're the one who eats balled rice with a spoon
suli: you eat balled rice with a spoon
suli: tell the truth, i've seen you eat fufu with a spoon, tell the truth
laila: you've seen me eat--- suli?
suli: i've seen you eating with it on snapchat, snapchat.
laila: suli you saw me eating fufu on snapchat?
    laila: okay i got it
laila: anyways, the food i enjoy the most is balled rice and tuozafi. what Hausa person doesn't enjoy tuozafi. it's our food so it's something I enjoy a lot
    Question 6
suli: there are lot of things in my house
laila: I've been to your house before there's nothing there that shows that--
suli: you've come to my house before? wow. then you did not look properly
laila: i've been to his house before there is nothing there that suggests he's from ghana--
    suli: you didnt look properly
laila: apart from himself, this body sitting right here, there's nothing--
suli: you're not telling the truth
laila: that suggest he's from ghana
suli: ah if you're from ghana truly, you dont have to prove to everyone that you're ghana. why?
suli: look at you, you've worn kente [gesturing to her head wrap]. who are you lying to?
laila: this is kente? this is kente?
suli: no, you've worn cloth, you're deceiving people
laila: i've heard it. so short story long or long story short. in his house there's nothing there that suggests he's ghanaian.
    suli: you're telling lies.
    laila: there's nothing
suli: because you didn't go to be bedroom
laila: i said in his house there's nothing to prove he's ghanaian. as for me, my house, everywhere you'll look ghana is plastered there.
    suli: so by force ghana
laila: painting sculptures, colthing every where you'll pass.. when you enter my house you see 'ah in this house a beautiful ghanaian lives here"
    Question 7
suli: white people ask alot of things everyday. mm you should answer
laila: when i first came here...when i can to this country i was 8 years old, i went to primary school and someone asked me: at home do i have a pet lion or a pet monkey?
laila: and umm, what a flabbergast, imagine the "conconbilities". so you know, it was a shock, i never expected but there you have it. people in this country, white people, ignorance is bliss to an extent. in fact, a black person actually asked me that question. The child was black.
suli: of course she was probably acting english-like
laila: when she asked me i said no, i have a pet goat.
suli: oh, i forgot, i went to ghana 19...kojo ko ko. there asked me somethings -
    Question 8
suli: nosy gossiper, shut your mouth, i'm plastered there like a meter
laila: i'm plastered there like a meter is a saying but nosy gossiper is not a saying it is a word
suli: you said words. do you know "shut your mouth" you don't know?
laila: :"shut your mouth" is what? is it twi? Or is it a new language
suli: you don't know, don't bother you don't know.
    laila: okay i got
suli: if you go to ghana... when you go to kumasi ask them
laila: okay i got it, i know.
Laila: God forgive me, i don't know because you've anglicized the word so if i don't understand, I don't understand
suli: I'm plastered there like a meter is mine
laila: as for me, i have several. " it takes money to earn money". " if an animal were to bite you it would be from your own cloth" what else? I like a lot of them.
suli: english like proverbs, they don't say that. if you read a book that's when they'll say that. when you talk to someone they'll say "i'm plastered there like a meter,, they won't say "if something were to bite you--
laila: we say that, everyday. People say that everyday.
suli: oh no one says that
laila: okay anyways, how should we say it? Family, that's all the questions. we're finished so we thank you for coming to this channel to watch this video, so if you understand twi and you understand it, you should comment in the section and tell us that laila or suli, whose twi is beautiful? whose twi is correct? who lives in this country, this country called england, who does very well as a ghanaian representing ghana?

Asem😂😂 by force Ghana😂😭 you guys had me laughing through the whole video. Laila has more vocabulary and is more comfortable speaking twi and she has an English accent in it. Whereas, Suli has less of an English accent in his twi but doesn't have as much vocabulary as Laila. So it's tie. Well done guys🙌🎉😅

Hi Laila! This video was HI-LARIOUS!!! As a Ghanaian living in the U.S. I completely understand when people think we don't speak twi, or think our twi isn't as good because we may have other accents influencing it or we speak Twinglish (mixing english and twi but it was SO refreshing to hear you speak our language! Some of us lose our African identities when we move away from our mother countries but it was really nice to see you not only speak an African language, but MY language. I'm really glad you did this! Great job! You also spoke better than Suli :p
And P.S my ultimate favorite Ghanaian food is ALSO tuo zaafi !! I love it SO much! But im not Hausa lol I'm Asante
