      TBHHH (and i mean this very lightheartedly) jeremiah asking belly to marry him did feel on character bc he seemed like an all or nothing kind of guy in the other books ESPECIALLY after susannah passed away; he probably had some sort of revived motivation to live effortlessly if that makes sense, take chances and do things that scare him. i am more than sure as someone who is starting university (i can't remember exactly how old he is by the time him and belly are in college) and who is still in the healing process after losing his mother to cancer, he felt the need to do something dangerous

But him randomly springing a wedding on Belly simply to try to salvage his relationship after "cheating" is a little too OOC for me. Him cheating seemed like a plot device to get Bonrad together, not something that I could actually see him doing. I honestly don't see either of the brothers cheating on Belly (even if I do have qualms against Conrad). That almost felt like a step too far. lmao

    • @FifthAveAtFive
      @FifthAveAtFive Год назад +4

      I think it seemed out of no where for a lot of readers because it seemed out of nowhere for Belly. The story is told exclusively from her pov, she doesn’t see either of the brothers for who they are because she is still an average teenager that sees the world for how it relates to her since her world view hasn’t been expanded yet. This is a reason I prefer the show more because we see the characters independent of Belly and of her lens of the events. The show is more clear how Jeremiah is a happy go lucky extroverted guy that enjoys being the center of the party. So it’s no surprise he ends up in a fraternity and looks for solace in his previous single guy lifestyle when Belly breaks up with him. She took him for granted because in the past he was her best friend that was always there for her and lacked the foresight that only comes from experience to think about how that dynamic would be shifted since they were romantically involved. Then being a guy that puts his all into the people he loves, for him there was no better way to show the importance of his relationship with Belly than to ask her to marry him because to him that’s the ultimate romantic commitment.
      I honestly don’t think until her relationships with everyone is tested because of this engagement does Belly actually grow significantly as a person to see the world beyond herself. She doesn’t see either of the boys clearly until after this event and then it’s clear how her gut was right that Conrad was reason😮choice. He is steady in the ways she needs a partner to be and compliments both her faults and positive attributes with his own.

      @@riotz101 Not really. He’s a very loyal person. You can see by the way in book 1 he would always make excuses for Conrad’s behavior and even respected his boundaries even if it hurt him. Also when Jeremiah stuck behind to catch sea crabs with Belly even though the boys said they wouldn’t let him play the video game if he didn’t come buy it. These, ofc, are only specific examples, but it goes to show his general character.
      Jeremiah is a flirt. He’s said it himself, people have said it about him, and his actions have shown that. But he never gave cheater. Which in-fact, he still doesn’t because he didn’t actually cheat. They had broken up. Being a flirt or even liking partying doesn’t mean that someone gives cheating vibes.

    in the last book, Jere just didn't seem like how he was before.
    You could argue that it had been like 2 years but still then, we didn't see him grow as a person. It was so clear in the first two books that Jere would genuinely never hurt Belly like Conrad would- his whole character changed from somebody who wanted to communicate and be there for his family, someone whose feeling were always pushed to the side, to a frat boy who likes to party with the boys and cared less about what Belly wanted.
    I agree that he shouldn't have hooked up with anyone but given his whole character, despite it being out of place for Jere, I could sort of see it. His feelings were never validated and the person, your best friend, your love, who validates you pulls away. He was insecure and it just happened. It doesn't excuse it but it explains it. Plus, they were broken up.
    I really do hope they change season 3 drastically because I truly do believe Jere was and is the better option. I mean, even on their wedding day he backed out because he knew he would never be conrad, once again pushing aside his feelings for everyone else.
    Let the book be conrad but the show be Jere.

    Now listen- I’m a Conrad girly through and through but I do agree that in the third book, Jeremiah seemed to have completely changed. His actions seemed out of character in a sense. This could’ve been from just growing up or maybe those were his true colors but I don’t know it did seem strange. And I agree that Conrad made some very dumb choices and was flaky and selfish at times but weren’t they all? ESPECIALLY Belly playing three boys in one summer. Also Conrad was dealing with stuff that his dad was doing and Susannah’s cancer. Not that it’s an excuse for him to be a douche but he did have a lot on his mind. I think he might’ve been trying to deny his feelings for Belly in a way too because he wanted her and his brother to be happy- or he didn’t want to screw up the dynamic they already had? Which is why he kept making the “she is a kid” comments. But overall I’m glad they all ended up happy and Conrad and Belly are together. ♾️

    Guys I get it that people are mad about Jeremiah’s character in the last book but can we talk about Conrad?? Like the guy was willing to STEAL his whole brother’s fiancé the weekend before their WEDDING without any regard to how Jeremiah would be affected by this. Heck he didn’t even care how Belly would be affected by this by putting her in an awkward position like that. He was completely selfish and only cared about himself and what he wanted instead of holding back and returning the same respect that was given to him by Jeremiah for years. Plus, if you ask me Jeremiah’s only flaw in the third book was that he was immature. Belly was emotionally cheating on him with Conrad and Conrad was willing to break up their engagement and wedding of his own brother.

      right? i read the first two books 4 or 5 years ago and binged the series a few weeks ago and… wow. I honestly gave up on the third book because I didn’t like how the series was going. Either way I don’t remember half of what happened. 🤷‍♀️ I think The Summer I Turned Pretty is a lot like To All the Boys I Loved before in that the show/movie is very different from the book, and so I look at them as two separate entities. While TALIB is better in the books (with good movies), TSITP is sooo much better as a show because of the creative liberties Jenny Han has taken with the reinterpretation. I hope she ends up making Belly and Jere end game because they seem to balance each other better than Belly and Conrad.
      This may be too far for a silly show interpretation, but I think that the people who ship Belly and Conrad are too similar to those who ship Bella and Edward in Twilight; they see the dominating, controlling, and manipulative relationships as romantic when they are toxic. Jere and Belly’s relationship is less serious and more true to its teenage nature, but the age gap and idolization of Conrad combined with his loner/stubborn personality just don’t add up to a healthy relationship.

    • @candlecord
      @candlecord Год назад +1

      @@chloefender1691I also read TSITP 1 around that time! I don't remember much but I do remember I did NOT like conrad fbfbfbfjb 💔
      Considering how things went in the following books I'm sorta glad I didn't read on; but looking at the show now I think I'm both with OP on "team don't mess around with two brothers" and still, just a little, team Jeremiah. His and Belly's dynamic reminds me a lot of me and my boyfriend, along with comfortable moments with past crushes; However, if I was in Belly's romantic situation, I would not be pursuing my unsure and fluctuating love for two brothers and just work on myself instead lol
      But I am not the character, have not watched enough of the show, and I don't remember half the plot of the book so I can't judge 😅 rubs me the wrong way is all. I'm just surprised that the silly book I read years back got this sort of adaptation! Oh how the world works sometimes 😊

    The issues with Belly's( Isabel Susannah Conklin) personality in the books vs. The T.V. series is that certain plot lines were altered/changed completely. Like Taylor going off on Belly in the show about being self-absorbed felt wrong cause it was season 1 and Belly hadn't done any of that yet and so far all Belly has done was try to find herself and be independent of Taylor while having other female friends! But book Belly would have deserved Taylor going off on her with how Belly reacts to Taylor kissing Steven in the books! Also making Belly break up with Conrad in the show when in the books he dumps her instead. Makes Jeremiah's monologue about Show!Conrad being a "coward" seem pointless as he didn't actually drop Belly like Book! Conrad did. There are certain kinds of dialogue in the show that felt directed at the book characters, but these characters were altered for the show so it doesn't hit the same.

    Her choice being Conrad and her eyes only being for Conrad is very disappointing and feels like it’s romanticizing hard settling for someone who doesn’t deserve you. I would have chosen neither after the wedding planning of Jeremiah and Belly. Neither relationship will be healthy and fuck it, I would believe in love striking once more because plenty of people find a second solid and happy love they feel is equal to the first real strong one.
    Now if I had no choice but to choose between the two, it would be Jeremiah, but on the condition they had given it a nice long break, and grew up some more. All of them were very immature and I’m sorry but if Communication is a weak to non existent pillar in any love relationship, it will never work in the long run and divorce will be inevitable. It may be a year it may be 15, but eventually the one who gets shut out all the time and put on the back burner gets so sick of it, it creates resentment. I would rather a partner who communicates their needs, likes and hurts like Jeremiah even if it hits childish and salty notes hopefully much more rarely after given time, at least he is keeping the communication pillar strong. Immaturity gets grown out of eventually especially when you have examples surrounding you to help you grow out of it, communication issues on the other hand needs yers and yrs of therapy and even then it’s a low success rate with couples that have such horrible issues as Conrad and Belly. Its like a choice between divorce in 20 yrs as friends with some kids that are mostly grown up and co-parenting but he’s always showing up for you and the kids, or divorce in 5-15 with a shitty custody battle due to resentment and sucking at communicating while he’s still being flaky af with you and the kids.
    Again though, I’d rather say fuck it and move on from the boys and just keep it as friends and find someone who is there for me and accepts me for me like Jeremiah but makes the heart pound like Conrad. No compromises on a good for me kind of love man. As so many people who have had a divorce give as advice man, just being in love is never enough in the long run. Sorry for the long ass essay, just my thoughts.

    Conrad - needed to learn how to convey his feelings better because all he did was string belly along and then drop her when things got hard
    Jeremiah- he was fun but DEF was a lil to immature for me,and poor anger management was definitely something I noticed about him(side note,to me at least cheating is definitely something he would do)
    Belly - she got better in the third book but the first two books my only feelings about about her was she was a major d-rider and she dtm.She was just overall embarrassing…like girl we’re rooting for u,stop🤦🏾‍♀️
    Taylor - like belly she got better in the third book but the first two books she was a terrible friend and basically wanted belly to be her mini
    In the end to me the books and the show are to different to compare but personally I like the show better because it makes the character more like able,also it seems like more is going on,and one more REALLY big thing…JUSTICE FOR CAM CAMERON

I felt the book characters seemed flat and one dimensional and the filming of the show really shows the complexity of their emotions and subsequent actions (i.e. Conrad ). I have never read these books or watched the show. But oof, after watching this video I’m questioning a lot of the choices made by certain characters. Like they really are something else whenever a love triangle’s involved 😂

    I’m so curious what they are going to do with the third season. Because that was a ROUGH book to get through.

    Yeahh I completely agree with you like things with jere are far more exaggerated than it could've been...

    never read nor watched the show, but as someone with a sister so close to my age imagining someone continuously going back and forth between us is insane, imagine that family dynamic!!!
    I could even imagine us kissing the same guy, no no no no!

    I read the summer I turned pretty and to all the boys I loved before when I was a freshman in Highschool, it’s crazy that these books and even the DUFF get to be on screen 😂 makes me feel kind of old.
