the fact that susannah wanted belly + conrad to go to the debs so she could see them dance with belly in a white dress bc she didn't think she'd be alive for their wedding
it's kinda interesting how most book readers end up being team conrad and people like me, who only watched the show, like jeremiah's portrayal better. still, cam cameron was the best option among the three boys in my opinion
as someone who only watched the show, i agree. conrad was literally insufferable and i didn’t understand why people in my tl were rooting for him… cameron was cute but gave off "i'm a nice guy" vibes, and while jeremiah was weird at times i think he was the best option 🤷🏻♀️
@@pretentiousnerd i didn't get those vibes off of cameron, but i see your point. jeremiah was also a little bit obnoxious at some points but i'll take that over the emotional unavailability conrad was expressing anytime.
@@tramya183 this, everyone that i know who read the books loved jeremiah in book 1 and 2. his character had to be ruined or he would’ve been the obvious better option
I'm so done with the blue-eyed/green-eyed love interests because they always look at people like they're ready to steal their souls and it freaks me out
Honestly it was annoying, like...Jeremiah is the best guy in the show, maybe second if we take Cam into consideration. Whole she completely fangirls over the insufferable Conrad, nobody would want a guy like that in real life, he gives off discount _insert any cliché "bad guy" you can think of" vibes
I DESPISED Taylor when I watched the series and I tried to find people on TikTok who thought the same but they said how amazing and fun she was DID WE NOT WATCH THE SAME SCENES 😟
I think because in the books she was genuinely so much worse until they went to college. Besides her first visit, she was much more supportive in the show vs the books
oh my god, THANK YOU! i 100% dislike her character and was really confused as to why people said she was such a good friend... like homegirl kissed her best friend's brother and started calling her self-absorbed all because of her raging jealousy. not to mention she did all of this on belly's BIRTHDAY like huh??? sure, she was a little bit more chill during the volleyball scenes, but she still annoyed the hell out of me. i just couldn't with her character. it was giving me flashbacks to bad friendships that i had in the past
It’s most likely because Taylor was way worse in the books so a lot of people were already expecting to hate her. She still isn’t a favorite in my book but I found some redeemable qualities in the show versus in the books.
ur white girl rant abt them being upset when their minority friend is finally in the spotlight was so real i was clapping u are SO REAL AND RIGHT and true. love u trini
the analysis of taylor’s character is so real. im tired of seeing people saying how much they love her character because i just see her the exact same way you see her.
i was just in love w belly’s mom the whole time.. and i rly loved seeing the moms’ friendship. it was very wholesome. also they’re so insane for playing Funeral.. they knew what they were doing
THANK YOU for putting into words why i hated the way they did the soundtrack!!! i love every single song they used individually and out of the show's context but it distracts so much from the plot and feels so unnecessary and until now i thought it was just me
SAME, no one was talking about how forced the soundtrack felt! it's like they threw in billboard top 100s and expected it to go viral 😭 i saw a tik tok about how tv shows use product placement for marketing and i cant help relate it to the soundtrack aswell!
It’s giving me making a soundtrack playlist for my imaginary stories in my head like it does not work cos its too much. I would’ve loved some scores made specifically for the scenes like in euphoria how they had labrinith make specific songs for characters and scenes you know? I do love taylor swift but it was a little forced
i had many issues with the show but one of things that truly sent me over was the lack of drama around Susannah’s cancer relapse. In the book (according to my memory), Laurel and Susannah are always out and tell the kids they are going to museums and “having fun” but the grand reveal at the end is that they were going to doctor appointments. it’s just such a big shock and makes it so much more emotional.
I love when trin was talking about the soundtrack of the show and saying it didn’t fit the scene I felt the same l was thinking why not add beautiful piano playing or violin to it instead of adding gen z songs why not make it a nice show with out lots of the songs every 5 seconds
some of the scenes we could've just had some guitar strumming transition type of thing but instead they added so much music that the significance of some scenes got lost
@@calumleys1129 ikr like I would’ve like the show more if they just had some instruments in the back round for scenes that were supposed to be good but some of the songs made the moment not feel special
It just took the power a good song could bring to a scene by giving snippets I think which is a shame cus they could've really polished the scenes🤷🏼♀️
no bc the way when watching this i was so blindsided when jeramiah was suddenly interested in her. i didn’t read the books and felt in the show it wasn’t made a plot point till the last three episodes
I would of liked Jelly more if it made sense. It seemed that Jeremiah liking Belly came out of nowhere. It just seemed like his jealousy before was out of not being the center of attention, not because he liked her. I was rooting for Conrad but I hate the finale because first of all check on your damn brother instead of going in to save Belly. I hated the way Susannah’s cancer was revealed in the finale. I feel like it should of been more explosive and less rushed. Also I don’t like that there is no closure for Jeremiah and Belly there’s just the cancer plot line and then all of the sudden we’re with Conrad again. I liked the show but I haven’t rewatched it purely because I don’t like the finale. Hopefully they do better next season.
OMG THIS! Like I would so be team jelly because I did find them adorable this season. But I know it’s gonna be unfair for them to settle or if it didn’t bring out the worst in each other especially Jeremiah. Like I love Jeremiah but I hated jealousy! And yes! The ending was so rushed and the kiss was so messy to me. Like she just started something with Jeremiah:/ And the fact that no one went it look for him during the deb ball made me mad.
Yeah it was weird that they didn’t show any flashbacks of them that established Jere’s feelings better (there are a lot ok the first book) You can tell they’re definitely pushing for Conrad
I SAID THE EXACT SAME THING ABOUT JELLY. LIKE WHERE DID THIS CRUSH COME FROM AND WHY DID IT SEEM TO BE OUT OF SPITE? So glad there are others who agree
i agree. tbh, all i see between jeremiah and belly is just purely platonic friendship or more like brother and sister relationship. the way they build it up seems off. i think it is much better if they stayed as friends but if they want to make it romantic between the two, ig they should do that in the next/future seasons, idk. everything seems so rush. Ps. I haven't read the book so maybe my interpretation are wrong.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is a *pretty* wholesome, summery, yet very bittersweet coming-of-age series. I honestly can’t even remember what happened in the books cause it’s been ages since then. I like this version of Isabel Conklin. I heard she’s *pretty* unlikeable in the book series, so I’m glad the writers of the show have given her some personality. The Fisher Boys and Steven are *pretty* wholesome themselves. Conrad may be moody, but deep down, he probably has depth to his feelings and emotions.
I completely agree. I would have probably liked the story more if their relationship had kept with the bro/sis vibes and focused more on Conrad coming to terms with his feelings.
All these plots of tv shows and movies where people suddenly get seen as gorgeous when they take off their glasses really screwed with my self esteem as a kid.
Yeah it should really be called “the summer I started wearing contacts” it always happens to these characters, and then they’re like, this summer, suddenly the world stopped and every boy became interested in me 🥰😌
@@MarieJes23 Oh yeah, that’s definitely part of it. I would take off my glasses and be like, “What’s wrong with ME that I don’t look 100x more attractive and people don’t fall over themselves to talk to me when I take them off?”
I’m glad to see I wasn’t alone on the soundtrack for the show. We did not need every current song ever. Maybe one or or two that could’ve been made timeless if it was used at the right moment. It was too clunky- they could’ve had an iconic “don’t you forget about me” moment and they BLEW IT
i remember being younger and reading those books and just was soooo mad at how the author completely destroyed jeremiah’s character in the last book so belly could be with conrad☹️
yeah i read the synopsis of the books after i finished watching the show becuz i was too anxious and it makes me so mad >:( but im still gonna watch the show lol
I feel like people say that it was so out of character for him, but when you hear people’s stories about their S.O. cheating on them, they always say that it was out of character. You can never fully control someone or know if they would/wouldn’t cheat on you. You can only just hope that you picked the right person. I think it makes the books more realistic because even if a person is PERFECT and seems inherently good, you have to remember good people can do bad things
Bruh the white friend being mad at the token poc friend because they finally aren't in the background was my entire hs experience with one of my best friends. Dropped her as soon as I went to college. The friendship was too toxic, and she didn't even see herself as a white girl, so that made it worse; she couldn't even recognize her white fragility
Conrad was Susannah and Laurel's boy. Although all his flaws were shown in the books, having both mothers share a special relationship with him always made me aware that Jenny Han wanted to highlight him as a sensitive, closed and fearful teenager.
I feel like Jeremiah and Belly didn't even like each other. Jere only saw interest once she turned "pretty" and Belly only liked him when Conrad rejected her. Also, I was literally sobbing during the family hugs. Jere going "please mom" messed me up. Anyways loved this vid as always. (Team Cam fr)
To me it seemed like Jere always liked Belly, he even said that he’s been waiting for her to get over Conrad for years. We didn’t see much of them prior to the year the show is set in so we can’t really see if they were flirty at all. I always felt like Conrad didn’t really express actual romantic interest in her even for the first half of the season. I loved Cam’s realistic awkwardness meeting a new girl and crushing on her, it was cute. But I knew they wouldn’t end up together just because of how the show was set up. Also YES the family hugs were so emotional, it tore me apart.
@@jadetorres4859 Its not that clear in the show, but in the books Jeremiah described his "defining moment" of when he first started liking belly when he saw her with Conrad and saw that there was something going on between them and got jealous (which we also see in the show). It honestly seems like he just wants what his brother has. He never really seemed to care when she was with Cam and was actually happy for them, but he was always bothered by her being with Conrad. Conrad has always liked her and had a soft spot for her since they were little.
@@aya-_-3045 yeah I feel like he loved belly a lot but not the same as conrad did. It’s an adorable platonic bond. He deserves a better love interest who will actually love him.
Random opinion no one asked for: the whole volleyball tournament was boring af and I almost skipped it. I understand it was supposed to show Belly and Conrad make a good team but they could have done that another way. The ONLY volleyball scene worth watching is the one in Avatar the Last Airbender.🔥
i think the music was placed just to show people how "trendy" the show is- like they used popular songs and it wasn't a seamless transition into the song, but mostly they were abruptly placed and you can tell they put it in for advertisement
Totally. The new trend is that movies don’t have soundtracks (songs that are valuable and enrich the storytelling). They just have a playlist of the current top 40 songs.
It was a smart move by them but make me hate the whole show more ( I already DESPISE THE BOOKS hate reading ftw) but for eg using Taylor's new song she re created was so smart because that's all the fandom was talking about and it attracted swifties ( a HUGE fandom) to watch the show. Very wannabe and clout chasing ish but yeah
@@abi.gail.b because… she caught him sm0king pot which is something he never did so she’s throwing it in his face… just like how he threw it in her face bc she had issues with her body ☠️
comfirming/answering trin's questions in the book and show the bonfire did seem way more dramatic in the book and jeremiah did not kiss a guy in the book. them playing a song every minute was kind lazy of the show it is not talked abt enough. edited: idk why jenny han made shayla and belly half asian i wished there was a character that was full asian for asian representation as someone who is chinese
i feel like the lgbtq+ representation was a bit forced in this series. especially the lesbian couple at the debutante ball. like they made a whole deal of mentioning it and i feel like good representation is when characters don't have to think twice about it. or else it feels like those stock photos where they throw in a kid on a wheelchair to make it seem inclusive :/
loved the soundtrack, hated the way they did it. Random bursts of loud music every five minutes was just odd. I did like how they only played Taylor swift songs for Conrad and Belly moments but honestly it felt forced. Also I so support more representation for minorities in shows. Even if the character isn’t fully white, many authors and show writers have to do something to make a character “whiter” and it’s so aggravating and unrealistic. As a writer I’m hoping I can do some justice for unrepresented groups because representation is so important! Never stop bringing this up, it is so important, and I will always stand with you as another voice.
@@valxxqina yes why did they make it such a huge thing? So fucking frustrating. I did, however, enjoy that everyone was nonchalant about Jere being bi - but part of me wished that he could have actually been with a guy instead of just mentioning it. I know that’s not how the book goes, so they can’t change it that much, but the whole “everyone is obsessed w belly” thing got old way too quick
I mean i understand why mixed rep is important but to my knowledge Jenny Han isn’t even mixed so I’m a bit confused as to why literally every single Asian character she’s ever written is wasian? Not an issue but a little bit weird
i loved when we didn’t see like a single plus size character the whole show until the very end when there was a single shot of a bigger girl at the deb ball when belly gave a monologue about how “all girls are pretty” it was a lame excuse for body diversity and came off super inauthentic
I feel like the show was Jenny’s way of rewriting the books, both with the romance and with the characters themselves sometimes. In the books, Belly spends way more time with Jeremiah and only, what? One or even half of one book being developed with Conrad? But in the show, it’s obvious right from the first five minutes that they’re gunning for Conrad. From the amount of scenes they’re given compared to the books to the tracks they use in their scenes. I noticed even Susannah is partial to him! So the show felt very manipulative because, even though Belly does hookup with Cam and Jeremiah, we already know there’s no room for anyone but Conrad. Who isn’t a good guy (I don’t think Jeremiah is great either). He’s hot and cold with Belly. He’s dating someone else and knows Belly is with other guys every time he makes a move. And the entire time he’s treating her that way, he fully knows she likes him and had always liked him. And I always see the argument that it’s because he was the only one of the kids who knew of his mom’s cancer, plus the stuff with the dad so he was going through a lot, but haven’t we already established that what people are going through doesn’t excuse how we treat others? Why does that seem to be forgotten with TV, movies, and books time and time again? “Because it’s just fiction”? But again, haven’t we established that people, especially young people, are influenced by media? So I’m not team Conrad. I’m not team Jeremiah, either, he’s got his own issues. I would’ve liked for the first season to end with Belly maturing to realize that boys aren’t the center of the world, especially the Fisher boys, and started focusing more on herself and her relationships with her friends, and then in the next seasons start picking up on romance again, but once she’s figured herself out.
This is exactly how I feel. I was literally like "if it's so obvious that she's gonna end up with Conrad anyway, what's the point of the love triangle?" And I've never read the books.
⚠️there’s are spoilers for the book in this comment i’ve read the books and wow i completely agree. i definitely am easier on this series and it’s charcters because i view it in the same respect i did tvd, a good time and even better escapism. however your point gave me a lot to think about! i know in the books when belly rejects jeremy she goes abroad in spain for two years and THEN she sees conrad at her graduation (he wrote her constantly so they were still keeping in touch) and so she definitely figures things out before ending up with him. but still we don’t know what she majored in or what she wants to do with her life-shit conrad gets more devolpment than her. and so i really hope jenny takes the time to really give belly the plot line she deserves, one that like you said is more than just romance!! (that’s why i really liked susanna’s plot line!) thank u for this comment!!
not only that but conrad also was with that black girl i forgot her name so he would have been a cheater too But technically speaking belly is still a cheater since in the last scene she kissed conrad and as far as us the viewers know she did not break up with Jer before that kiss
YES I AGREE! Thank you! Like I find it to be a double standard when conrad stand root for that ngl. Like you WANTED them to cheat…like I get what Jeremiah did was wrong but let’s not lie and say he did save their ass 😂
I love Jeremiah and lean more towards team jere but I completely agree that until episode 5 I DID NOT think he liked her. When he shot that firework I literally turned to my friend and said, “he’s not jealous, he did that because he’s pissed at Conrad for driving away their dad.” LOL
On the question of why Jenny Han’s characters aren’t fully Asian, first I’ll say I literally know nothing about racism-based casting decisions, but I do remember Jenny saying that some producers originally wanted a white actress for Lara Jean, and Jenny was firmly against it. It seems she had even more creative control on this project, but I wonder if higher-ups are more agreeable to bi/multiracial actors/characters. But, like I said, I know nothing lol
So I’m not 100% sure but I believe I read somewhere that Jenny Han herself is biracial. Maybe she tries to cast actresses she sees herself in for her characters :)
@@Averysue_ nope both are parents are asian americans. Both of them are Koreans and she was born in Korea. Tbh at first with to all the boys, I thought was was still a good choice but its looking like a trend with her to not just make the main character but even the side characters half asian at most. Smell like a bit of internalized racism to me.... speaking as a full asian girl having gone through teenage years around all white ppl and experienced some internalized racism myself before I realized it and let it go.
@@julie91295 Oh thank you for informing me! I had only briefly skimmed articles revolving around Jenny and her ethnicity. Also, I am so sorry you’ve gone through internalized racism before, you are just as valuable as anyone and everyone around you ♥️
I really did not like taylor... belly was so right for telling her that she just hate seeing her getting more independent and maybe casting a shadow over her and not the other way around for once... I was so disappointed
Also i for some reason connected with Conrad lol, the older siblings vibes of having to be in charge, the fact that everyone would be like "omg talk to me" and interrupt him THE SECOND he opened his mouth, also the having to cope with being too old for the "mistakes" and too young for "the adult stuff" that weird middle where you feel like everything is wrong, i don't know if he is the best option but i did like him a lot
Conrad in the show I definitely could identify with. We see his perspective more here and why he acts the way he does. It does help that Conrad was made significantly nicer in the show though. In the books we're only in Belly's(Isabel's) head and Conrad is much more of a jerk. Like his flip flopping in the books feels more malicious than oblivious.
In the book it was told from Belly's perspective and she didn't know she had cancer so its revealed in the last few chapters and everyone including Jeremiah knew about it Susanna's cancer but they wanted it to be the last perfect summer together but Susanna didn't want belly to know. belly and her relationship was a lot stronger in the books so it was a lot bigger of a deal and your right everyone in the books was white lol
it makes no sense though, why would she care more about that if her own sons know, just like with bellys internalized misogyny I'm glad they toned down the mary sue a bit
My dad and I watched this together (and cried) but we were actually a bit peeved that the ending was about the love story instead of the Family Love Story, we really would’ve preferred to be punched in the gut. They could’ve done w/ drawing out the “begging our mom to live” scene and actually SEE her give in and promise to try. And then cut to the breakfast/dinner montage and finish w/ Belly leaning her head on Conrad’s shoulder at the beach. We didn’t need it to be all spelled out. Just felt a little whiplash-y
Also totally agree about the songs, whoever edited them in didn’t allow them to fill a scene correctly, it’s just a choppy cut of some lyrics. Songs are first meant to fit the VIBE and the lyrics are meant to slowly be understood in context w/ the scene not just to spell it out for you
I really cannot fathom how some people like Taylor, maybe she in some ways she has some character development. But she never even properly apologized to belly for kissing her brother than gaslighting her after belly called her out. From the very beginning of the show she’s jealous, controlling, and then gets mad at belly for taking HER advice. The whole jealousy with Taylor especially bothers me, we see her hanging out at parties/getting ready to go hang out with other friends, but as soon as belly gets other friends it becomes some huge issue. Taylor is also so controlling in some scenes, she basically peer pressures belly without the peer constantly pushing her out of her comfort zone and then when belly does it and ends up enjoying herself Taylor gets upset. I don’t know, maybe Taylor is better in the other books (I haven’t read them) but at least in this one she’s insufferable. (Anyways Trin this was amazing and i’m so glad you dedicated a video to this show!)
You’re just listing all the reasons that I like her 😭 she’s a very realistic shitty friend and I know so many girls who have been like this or had a friend like this in their early high school years
Speaking of all of her leads being White and Asian makes me think of something else I noticed. All of her "Whasian" lead females always in up with a white guy and in the process pass over a boy of color whether it be in the books, movies, or shows. By no means am I saying there is something wrong with interracial couples it is good to see the representation but it is hard not to feel like there is a pattern. In To all the boys, LJ has Peter and picks him over John who I know was white in the books but is black in the movies and here in The Summer I Turned Pretty Cam gets left in the dust for the potential of being with one of the brothers.
He wasn't black . He was mixed . They don't have to be with black .stop forcing that trope. It woll be black women commenting this nosense. Let Dem use white men if they want. 🤦🏽♀️
yess i was thinking about this too! even beyond jenny han's stuff, just in general i feel like we only see women of color with white men as the main couple like i wanna see two poc characters in love
her mom rlly caught her DRINKING and said "who said you could have a drink?" like that's my mom's reaction to me eating cake before dinner or something not me underage drinking 😭
Trin saying Jeremiah is a “wheres my hug at“ guy is so accurate! I read her mind of where she was going right before it came out and I was dying!!! Also: Jeremiah had better chemistry in the 30 second scene with that guy at that party than all the Belly scenes
Something watching this show made me realize is that the older I get the more I care about the adult storyline than the teen story line in all these shows lmao
i love this show, but i also feel like the representation was a little…idk. making the main characters asian american is awesome. all here for representation. but i also feel like there’s no REAL commitment if the main character is asian with a white dad, breaking it off with her POC guy in pursuit of the white male love interests, while the white characters ALSO break it off with their POC love interests. like let’s NOT introduce the brown characters as foils to the “better-suited” white love interests that we know they’re going to end up with. as a black person, i find that a little upsetting. and i’m going to double down earlier with my previous point, is it REALLY groundbreaking to have a white male/asian woman romance story? i just feel like it’s a trope that’s been driven into the GROUND.
it's actually so frustrating to me that the poc love interest is almost ALWAYS the better choice and gets sidelined for the white guy (like it's happened here, to all the boys, kissing booth, love victor etc.....)
Yes, finally someone is pointing that. I felt uncomfortable with the fact that both POC love interests were "used" to prove / reinforce Belly and Conrad's attraction to each other, as we often see in many shows.
It's so annoying they did that in To all the boys I've loved before too. John Ambrose and Nicole were both white in the books and then they change their race for diversity and it's honestly worse
as someone who has read the books and watched the show, I honestly think the show was better which is a rare occurrence but the show provided so much more depth which is also rare lol The ability to see all the plots and not just belly's POV make the show so much better.
The thing about him telling Belly he was drunk and he can't really remember their almost kiss is he told her like the 2 episode that he remembers everything when he's drunk
I'm pretty sure Belly was white in the books. There's no mention of her being Asian, and the girl in the original covers is white. They also changed Belly's mom's last name from Dunne to Park
@@katehabal4806 no, that's *Belly's* last name and that's always been in the books. It's Laurel's that's different. You can see it on her Instagram username and it's the name they read out at the deb ball
I liked the series more than the books just because it felt like it had more of a plot. The debutante plot added a lot more. And I hope we get more conrad and belly being together because we really didn't in the books besides the flashbacks that weren't always positive. I am going to dread the next two seasons bc I hate jere as the books go on. And I do believe Jere's character didn't really change that much in the 3rd book like everyone thinks. I just think that his childlikeness didn't really disappear or age the way it should have.
As someone from Europe I was glad that was included because I simply cannot IMAGINE that Americans really do not start drinking at 15/16. Like, it is perfectly normal to drink at 16 over here.
it would have been so much better if they played instrumental music, ya know, for example at the dancing scene, it could have been one of those scenes (that have been done a few times but could have been so good) where it zones in on Conrad and Belly, with some emotional instrumental piano type of music, then the background becomes muffled, and then it shows just them two with no one else in the room. Instrumentals are the smoothest transition and music to use to make the viewer feel some typa way. When you hear fucking taylor swift abruptly like that, it just takes you out of the show. I love some of the songs they chose, and I can see why they would want to put those songs in the background, but it really ruined the vibe for me. It could have made the show so much better.
I feel like they overused the popular songs, some were a perfect choice (for me) and really added to the emotion of the whole scene like "The way I loved you" and "Funeral". But they should have replaced a bunch of others with more instrumental. I cringed at "Thank u next" cause at that point it just seamed like they were trying to put everything they could from billboard top 100, and i love that song 😭
The fact that all the songs are mainstream and super popular is a big problem for that reason. We all attribute different things to these songs already because we knew them beforehand, so playing something like Ice Cream during a shopping montage or Thank U Next during the deb prep scene can seem really out of place or badly used. It became excruciating how hard they tried to seem "trendy" just by picking from the top 100.
I think if they used these same trendy songs but turned them instrumental or even more acoustic, it would have been such a happy medium! Still keeping with the trends but also making everything have a more subtle and polished feel would have added such a nice touch to the soundtrack.
I was mad watching this that they made Jeramiah part of the love triangle out of nowhere part way through. There was a point where he was just not involved in any of the drama and was just running around being a bisexual chaos god and I was so into it
the entire time i thought they had a brother-sister relationship and i was a little off put when they got together because i never really saw them getting together
@@delicatedream_z4105 SAME. Like at first watch I definitely saw the hints towards his feeling for her as they were very small and I can’t like I was team Jeremiah at first but then I switched to team conrad because in all honestly belly will never love Jeremiah like she will conrad. And that’s not fair to her or Jeremiah. Like I LOVE their relationship this season and I find it adorable. I honestly preferred watching them just cause they did belly and conrad so dirty this season. However, the jealousy and manipulative traits that came to life when Jeremiah saw conrad and belly getting closer was not it! Like I don’t blame him for taking a shot because he is sweet to her it’s just. He deserves better than being used for plot
I’ve never read the books so this is just my two cents on just the series but right off the first episode, I saw Jeremiah’s connection and interest in Belly just from their first interaction together. I thought the actor who played him did an amazing job with the longing looks and flirty playfulness with Belly. I was automatically drawn to him even though I already knew they were setting up Belly and Conrad as endgame (based on Belly’s commentaries in the series). I feel like I may have a different opinion and perspective if I had actually read the books first but i really loved all of the Jelly scenes together. They were really playful and honest and I see more of a friendship turned relationship between the two. I do see the chemistry between Belly and Conrad as well, though. Maybe in the next season, It will showcase that a little Bit better than this season because I was fully invested in the Jeremiah/Belly relationship. I do wish there was some sort of closure between Belly and Jeremiah before she kissed Conrad.
Jeremy gives me kind of a sad puppy dog vibe but not in a cute way. He's described as a golden retriever and I feel that kinda of works. He's energetic and all over belly. But he's jealous of his owner giving attention to other dogs and if he doesn't get the attention he wants, he tears up ur slippers or couch. No hate to golden retrievers or anything. Just an analogy I thought of.
He definitely had golden retriever/nice boy energy and honestly it wasn’t that bad except during his like when he acted out of jealousy and was manipulative. Like honestly I think the romantic relationship between him and belly brings out the worst in him. Like majority of the time he’s very sweet towards people, hypes them up, jokes around, and is over all the life of the party. He’s like that when they’re together romantically and is very nice to her but they were best when they had a great platonic relationship.
NO CAUSE THE DEB SCENE WITH FUCKING THE WAY I LOVED YOU PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND ENDED ME I WAS ON THE FLOOR THAT WAS THE MOST CINEMATIC AND INCREDIBLE PIECES OF FILM EVER
I didn’t read the books, but based on the show Conrad seems like a creepy sad boi with anger issues, while Jeremiah seems to be genuinely loving and supportive of Belly and overall just a better match for her personality
Trin feeling bad for not remembering something when half of the plot literally didn’t exist in the book because they barely had anything going on 😅 This is the only case where I think the show is leagues better than the books
me punching the air bc finally someone else questions why tf all Jenny Han’s Asian characters have to be mixed like it’s really giving that middle school Asian girl self hatred where you romanticize white people and being white adjacent bc how prevalent they are in media and just in general🤢 like the way it literally adds nothing to the character or story either it’s always just to be a little extra quirky or exotic and the “othered” concept could still be accomplished if they were just full Asian like ma’am… I’m sick lmao
this is just an assumption of mine, but i think its more complicated than that.. she was writing these books (both summer i turned pretty and to all the boys) during the peak teen ya phase where diversity was basically non-existent. even today books by authors of colour get rejected because they aren't appealing to a "mass audience" (aka white people) or that the publishing house already filled the "quota". so idk just the benefit of the doubt or maybe she does have internalised racism lmfao
maybe it's because she wants to add more representation to asian people, but with a "hollywood-pleasing" twist because we all know how hollywood loves erasing full pocs when they can't portray them in a stereotypical way. as a black girl, i've seen this happen with the cast of the sun is also a star (and many more movies and series) where the main characters are supposed to be fully jamaican, so black, and korean, so east-asian, BUT the main actors are mixed with white. it's so infuriating istg.
Thank YOU seriously why aren't we giving the MALE lead roles for love interests to POC . It's almost like this fetishization the authors/ producers have of a white guy+ literally any POC. It makes me so mad. Why couldn't Jeremy and con be black , brown or asian too??
@@coldkittens yes! while the books don't mention their race, their customs and habits and even the description of their features in the books point to white. I was so confused when they casted belly and steven bc their behavior and attitude match white people more than anything.
I'm so glad u decided to do a video on this show. I saw the ad for it on tv and then watched in one sitting on prime. Quite the watch. I'm 15 and and belly was too at the start of the show. And she's doing all these things and I'm like the heck. I want some of that. Maybe not all the drama tho.
I’m almost 17 and haven’t done any of that stuff. DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT! Romance and parties are not worth the hype from what I hear. Make sure to form some great friendships with people that you trust.
in the books I was team Jeremiah because there was a whole background story about how Jeremiah is bells best friend and they were very adorable, but in the last book I was team Conrad because I HATED the plot of the last book. but on the tv series I prefer Conrad or cam Cameron, but I still think that Jeremiah is kinda charming
I was team Jelly (besides Cam) when watching the show without reading the books but I totally see his character switch up being like an older brother making fun of Belly (super similar to Steven) but then wanting to be with her. But I also still can't excuse Conrad's attitude. Like he has so much he's dealing with and I really understood his character much better after finding that out but it doesn't mean being rude is just fine. He's meaner to Belly than necessary through the whole show and it makes me so uncomfortable because it shows that he can't separate his feelings. Obviously he's a kid and still learning how to express his emotions, obviously this is a show and not that serious, but Belly deserves so much more from him or anyone.
18:39 THAT PART!!! i lost a bunch of weight over the summer because of my ED and started getting a lot more male attention at school (which is uncomfortable in itself but anyways). suddenly all my non-black friends are saying ive changed which is so odd like all that’s changed is the way people VIEW me that has nothing to do with who i am!!
I feel so represented by your hatred for “Jelly” (I really hate that name). Jeremiah cringed me out so bad, I can’t. Cam and Conrad, even though the whole sad boy aloofness is getting kind of old, are sooo much better as love interests.
me too!!! although I hated the way Jeremiah was demonized in the last book, it was kinda random and just felt forced so that her and conrad could end up together (even though I was rooting for them)
No I agree,, I watched Trins video without knowing about the show first and got interested so decided to watch it .. it was so bad like waste of time bad. It was cute at times but most characters to me were unbearable. I love rom coms too but this just wasn’t it for me at all
It was fun to watch but I hated every romance option and was way more interested in the friendship between the moms. I didn’t think the slow burn that everyone else likes was very good either. Thought it was forced for no reason because there’s no reason for them not to be together other than Conrad being Conrad.
@@dumbdumb6222 She generally liked Cam and with Jeremiah he was willingly being the second choice. Like pool scene where he admits feelings and kissing her? Like dude just last episode you saw her almost kissing ur brother before you sabotaged them?
Thank you somebody finally talks about the soundtrack!! While I think its nice to hear some of my favorite artists on screen, I feel like trendiness was prioritized over actual song value. It makes the logic look like "oh were gonna put this in the show cause people know it" instead of seeking out songs that actually match the scenes or even doing original scoring.
I loved Jere as a person at first because im like oh theyre cute platonic friends but then he started giving lee from tkb energy with his jealousy and im like bro you have no shot? i was shocked for how many people were team jeremy after i watched it,
Oh no, “The summer I turned pretty” was something I kept re-reading 😂 but this makes me wish I just let my imagination do it’s job, everything in my head seemed way better then what is portrayed here😭
The fact that she has no experience and has made out with so many different guys her age in one summer has confused me the most. Not even now as an adult I have so many guys over one summer 🤣
trin ur vids are literally so interesting. i saw it was a 1 hour video at the beginning and i was like "oh I’m probably gonna skip a lot and not finish it" but i actually finished it and i love your honest opinions *although I’m team jeremiah* but also about the music too. glad someone made this type of vid:))
I still haven’t read the books but I’m all the way team Conrad based on the series, I can’t understand how people like Jeremiah because I think he was really manipulative. The way he didn’t want his brother to be happy with belly and wanted to set him up with this other girl I forgot the name of😂 But tbh I didn’t like Belly all that much either in terms of treating the boys, she really did hurt all three of them all the time which is kinda sad I also thought it was weird that Conrad seemed to be the “bad guy” or “fuckboy” when he was interested in this one girl for the whole series and Jeremiah was hooking up all around (no shame in that) and Conrad was being mopey and all because of his mom so his earned “titles” don’t make any sense

And that’s why I hate plots like this, haha.

I think it's more so supposed to be about her presentation of herself and stepping into her personality. Confidence drives attractiveness up
i think is more about her becoming a woman rather than becoming pretty

it's kinda interesting how most book readers end up being team conrad and people like me, who only watched the show, like jeremiah's portrayal better. still, cam cameron was the best option among the three boys in my opinion
that’s because in the books the author completely changed jere’s character in the last book so belly would be with conrad. ☹️
as someone who only watched the show, i agree. conrad was literally insufferable and i didn’t understand why people in my tl were rooting for him… cameron was cute but gave off "i'm a nice guy" vibes, and while jeremiah was weird at times i think he was the best option 🤷🏻♀️
@@pretentiousnerd i didn't get those vibes off of cameron, but i see your point. jeremiah was also a little bit obnoxious at some points but i'll take that over the emotional unavailability conrad was expressing anytime.

She still isn’t a favorite in my book but I found some redeemable qualities in the show versus in the books.
she's insufferable in the books

Oh it's not just you. I was losing my mind.

Also I don’t like that there is no closure for Jeremiah and Belly there’s just the cancer plot line and then all of the sudden we’re with Conrad again. i agree. tbh, all i see between jeremiah and belly is just purely platonic friendship or more like brother and sister relationship. the way they build it up seems off. i think it is much better if they stayed as friends but if they want to make it romantic between the two, ig they should do that in the next/future seasons, idk. everything seems so rush.
Ps. I haven't read the book so maybe my interpretation are wrong.

I actually always felt like jere and belly were kinda forced in the books .
i just finished the last book last night and i was SO MAD it was so out of character for him
I feel like people say that it was so out of character for him, but when you hear people’s stories about their S.O. cheating on them, they always say that it was out of character. You can never fully control someone or know if they would/wouldn’t cheat on you. You can only just hope that you picked the right person. I think it makes the books more realistic because even if a person is PERFECT and seems inherently good, you have to remember good people can do bad things

He’s been in love with her since they were kids Conrad is the one who only saw her like that when she got pretty
But I knew they wouldn’t end up together just because of how the show was set up. edited: idk why jenny han made shayla and belly half asian i wished there was a character that was full asian for asian representation as someone who is chinese
i feel like the lgbtq+ representation was a bit forced in this series. especially the lesbian couple at the debutante ball. like they made a whole deal of mentioning it and i feel like good representation is when characters don't have to think twice about it. or else it feels like those stock photos where they throw in a kid on a wheelchair to make it seem inclusive :/
loved the soundtrack, hated the way they did it.
I mean i understand why mixed rep is important but to my knowledge Jenny Han isn’t even mixed so I’m a bit confused as to why literally every single Asian character she’s ever written is wasian? Not an issue but a little bit weird
@@liftingskies8970 yeah like in to all the boys i’ve loved before….weird.
i loved when we didn’t see like a single plus size character the whole show until the very end when there was a single shot of a bigger girl at the deb ball when belly gave a monologue about how “all girls are pretty” it was a lame excuse for body diversity and came off super inauthentic
literally!!! i don’t think any show can achieve true diversity if ALL the characters are thin and majority white.
I really appreciate your approach in evaluating the series. I guess people tend to give more leeway for fictional stories.
This is exactly how I feel. I was literally like "if it's so obvious that she's gonna end up with Conrad anyway, what's the point of the love triangle?" And I've never read the books.

i know in the books when belly rejects jeremy she goes abroad in spain for two years and THEN she sees conrad at her graduation (he wrote her constantly so they were still keeping in touch) and so she definitely figures things out before ending up with him. but still we don’t know what she majored in or what she wants to do with her life-shit conrad gets more devolpment than her.
and so i really hope jenny takes the time to really give belly the plot line she deserves, one that like you said is more than just romance!! (that’s why i really liked susanna’s plot line!)

unpopular option: im glad jeremiah shot that firework or else belly would’ve been a cheater and then looked liked a hypocritie in book three💀
not only that but conrad also was with that black girl i forgot her name so he would have been a cheater too
But technically speaking belly is still a cheater since in the last scene she kissed conrad and as far as us the viewers know she did not break up with Jer before that kiss
@@allthingsfandoms6833 she wasn’t dating Jeremy in the end of the first season though 👁they were just messing around technically 🧍♀️

I really did not like taylor... belly was so right for telling her that she just hate seeing her getting more independent and maybe casting a shadow over her and not the other way around for once... I was so disappointed
If you didn't like taylor in the show then YOU ARE NOT READY FOR BOOK TAYLOR cuz she was impossible
@Ryujin's Shoulders I have since read the first book and I can confirm book Taylor is on a WHOLE other level
Songs are first meant to fit the VIBE and the lyrics are meant to slowly be understood in context w/ the scene not just to spell it out for you
trin calling jeremiah jeremy like belly’s bestie is so funny to me 😭
I really cannot fathom how some people like Taylor, maybe she in some ways she has some character development.

So true! Used to watch gossip girl and skip scenes with the adults and now in TSITP i loved the moms the most!!
Trins reaction too Olivia’s songs being in the show was literally the same way I reacted
i love this show, but i also feel like the representation was a little…idk. making the main characters asian american is awesome. all here for representation. but i also feel like there’s no REAL commitment if the main character is asian with a white dad, breaking it off with her POC guy in pursuit of the white male love interests, while the white characters ALSO break it off with their POC love interests. like let’s NOT introduce the brown characters as foils to the “better-suited” white love interests that we know they’re going to end up with. as a black person, i find that a little upsetting. and i’m going to double down earlier with my previous point, is it REALLY groundbreaking to have a white male/asian woman romance story? i just feel like it’s a trope that’s been driven into the GROUND.
it's actually so frustrating to me that the poc love interest is almost ALWAYS the better choice and gets sidelined for the white guy (like it's happened here, to all the boys, kissing booth, love victor etc.....)
The main character is half white that's why her dad is white
Yes, finally someone is pointing that. I felt uncomfortable with the fact that both POC love interests were "used" to prove / reinforce Belly and Conrad's attraction to each other, as we often see in many shows.
It's so annoying they did that in To all the boys I've loved before too. John Ambrose and Nicole were both white in the books and then they change their race for diversity and it's honestly worse
@@bria7885 i understand that. thank you.
as someone who has read the books and watched the show, I honestly think the show was better which is a rare occurrence but the show provided so much more depth which is also rare lol
The ability to see all the plots and not just belly's POV make the show so much better.
They changed it to Conklin not Park
@@katehabal4806 no, that's *Belly's* last name and that's always been in the books. It's Laurel's that's different. You can see it on her Instagram username and it's the name they read out at the deb ball

YESSSS I NEEDED TRIN TO DO THIS SERIES.
The amount of underage drinking in the show is crazy and the parents just let them lol
Is that bad for Americans? I mean i know it's not legal but yall don't drink with your parents?????
As someone from Europe I was glad that was included because I simply cannot IMAGINE that Americans really do not start drinking at 15/16. Like, it is perfectly normal to drink at 16 over here.
it’s really not that big of a deal lol, I feel like it’s pretty accurate!
Well… it’s accurate here in Canada at least most 16 year olds drunk
@@tanita6234 most Americans are super up tight about it tbh
You know your becoming a señora when the only relationship you were truly invested in was the mom's friendship haha
Your reaction to the first note of “the way I loved you” was also my reaction. I literally SCREAMED.
Also the show evoked so much more emotion in me, at least the first book. If the first season made me feel this much, I’m scared for the next one 😂😂
it would have been so much better if they played instrumental music, ya know, for example at the dancing scene, it could have been one of those scenes (that have been done a few times but could have been so good) where it zones in on Conrad and Belly, with some emotional instrumental piano type of music, then the background becomes muffled, and then it shows just them two with no one else in the room.
@@rosanah.9089 completely agree, "the way I loved you" and "funeral" were perfect. some other songs worked well for me too, others not so much.
There was a point where he was just not involved in any of the drama and was just running around being a bisexual chaos god and I was so into it
honestly enjoyed his character more when I just thought of him as a fun flirty supportive bestfriend 😭
the entire time i thought they had a brother-sister relationship and i was a little off put when they got together because i never really saw them getting together
@@delicatedream_z4105 this i rlly wished they changed the show and made him like that
Lool the fact that Trin keeps calling him Jeremy hahaha
Maybe in the next season, It will showcase that a little
Bit better than this season because I was fully invested in the Jeremiah/Belly relationship. I do wish there was some sort of closure between Belly and Jeremiah before she kissed Conrad.
team jere and team belly and team cam! That classic "white person syndrome" is really relatable.

Idk I kinda liked how laid back the books were they felt relaxing
me punching the air bc finally someone else questions why tf all Jenny Han’s Asian characters have to be mixed like it’s really giving that middle school Asian girl self hatred where you romanticize white people and being white adjacent bc how prevalent they are in media and just in general🤢 like the way it literally adds nothing to the character or story either it’s always just to be a little extra quirky or exotic and the “othered” concept could still be accomplished if they were just full Asian like ma’am… I’m sick lmao
this is just an assumption of mine, but i think its more complicated than that.. she was writing these books (both summer i turned pretty and to all the boys) during the peak teen ya phase where diversity was basically non-existent. even today books by authors of colour get rejected because they aren't appealing to a "mass audience" (aka white people) or that the publishing house already filled the "quota". so idk just the benefit of the doubt or maybe she does have internalised racism lmfao
maybe it's because she wants to add more representation to asian people, but with a "hollywood-pleasing" twist because we all know how hollywood loves erasing full pocs when they can't portray them in a stereotypical way. as a black girl, i've seen this happen with the cast of the sun is also a star (and many more movies and series) where the main characters are supposed to be fully jamaican, so black, and korean, so east-asian, BUT the main actors are mixed with white. it's so infuriating istg.
Thank YOU seriously why aren't we giving the MALE lead roles for love interests to POC . It's almost like this fetishization the authors/ producers have of a white guy+ literally any POC. It makes me so mad. Why couldn't Jeremy and con be black , brown or asian too??
well in this case i think belly is supposed to be white. in the book it’s never mentioned whether she’s asian or not 👀
