Sure, but tropes don’t need to be healthy irl to be good. The point of a story is to, well, tell a story. It’s not supposed to be a step-by-step guide to healthy relationships.
I love age gaps ONLY when they’re in the characters minds. Like a senior freaking out about dating a junior and the other person is just like “I’m one month younger then you 😑”
4:50 Rather than the “second chance” trope, I am a MUCH bigger fan of the “right pair, wrong time” trope (as I like to call it), when the couple had to break up due to fundamental differences or flaws between both parties, but eventually get back together after they BOTH grow as people. I especially love when the show doesn't push or even hint at them getting back together, letting both move on and maybe even become close friends before the thought of reuniting romantically even crosses their minds. Whenever executed well, it’s genuinely one of my favorite romantic tropes of all time, and it baffles me how I haven't seen a single person recognize its existence. I've seen this successfully happen in real life as well, and it's magical. Personal growth is just the most beautiful thing.
The only second chance trope i can think of are Peter B and Mary Jane from spider-verse. for an example of a love triangle that is an *actual* triangle, may I suggest "the iron widow"! the mc has two love interests and for a moment, when they eventually meet there's not only an unspoken brief rivalry about her affection but also... a couple of sparks between the two guys as well 🤭 it kinda turns into a non-labeled poly relationship if I remember correctly hehe
The only form of second chance I like is right person wrong time. My favs are definitely friends to lovers, right person wrong time and star crossed/tragically fated lovers
I feel Adrienette works perfectly for the slow burn trope 😂 because it deffo was a slow burn relationship to the point it took 5 seasons for Adrien to finally admit he liked Marinette romantically also the amnesia trope happened in Sailor Moon too, Usagi had to try & remind Mamoru that he was her boyfriend
I feel like there's a difference between a legit slow burn and having quirky coincidences constantly ruin ship moments for 4 seasons straight (still love it tho)
When you mentioned the Jack and Rose thing, Rose couldn’t have just broken it off with Cal because her mum was controlling and everyone wanted her to get married to Cal especially for his money but she didn’t like Cal and she was with Jack because she actually loved him. It wasn’t that easy for Rose to have just “broken it off” with Cal. Jack was her escape from her controlled life which is why she was seeing him while she was in her forced marriage with Cal. Also, who know what Cal would have done to her if he knew she was with Jack? He already tried to shoot them while the ship was sinking.
The best Second Chance is Persuasion by Jane Austen. The only reason they didn’t work out the first time is because she let her family get in her head, so it’s about her arc of learning how to be firm in her own convictions.
i'd like second chance if it combined with right person wrong time, like the second chance being more so dating when the time is right for both of them and not being because one of them was a bad partner
But peeta didnt have amnesia. He was brainwashed to be kind of sleeper agent to kill Katniss. He still knows and remembers Katniss, its just most of his memories were altered or warped by his Capital conditioning.
-> enemies to lovers : the broke mc first meet the handsome rich ml and find him cocky and rude -> fake dating : since mc is broke and ml needs to find a gf to satisfy his dad he picks her even though he could've pick anyone else but someone he hates -> friends to lovers : after few episodes and a lot of insufferable cringe scenes (bonus point if it's them being wayyy to close to eachother for whatever reason) they finally learn to appreciate eachother -> amnesia : mc loses their memories because they got hit by truck-kun so ml has to build their weird situationship all over again
i also feel like the 'makeover' troupe and 'don't tell my secret, i'll do anything' troupe should also get talked about. i'm not sure how i feel about it being the only stand alone romantic troupe but it definitely gets interesting when mixed with other troupes. i used to be turned off by any friends to lovers troupe but recently i came across this grumpy and sunshine, childhood friends to lovers story and something about it just made me keep wanting more 😅
I'm a sucker for "Love at first punch", as seeing someone whos never stood up to finally have it done and falling in love with the one person who does is funny and sweet.
For me the large age gap is an imbalance of power like you said, but it’s also the fact that they are in different stages in their lives. I mean even if they both are graduated and have jobs, one will have more experience than the other and will likely die sooner, etc! Plus maybe the other person just likes them because of that persons connections.
I absolutely love the “Gentle Giant” trope. It’s just so sweet and wholesome 😭 Edit: (Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the K Drama “Extraordinary You” falls under this, love that show down btw)
Oh girl when you got to love triangles… I think you’d love the Challengers movie. I love love loved it. 10/10 would recommend. Movie of the year for me.
was definitely a good movie. use of music, silence, and camera work was so creative and hardly seen nowadays. however, i didn’t like the ending because it felt so vague. BUT 10/10 movie frfr
This is how I would put these tropes in order. 1. Slow Burn (extra points if it has enemies to lovers) 2. Enemies to Lovers 3. Forbidden love 4. Rivals to lovers 5. Sunshine x Grumpy 6. One bed trope 7. Fake dating 8. Friends to lovers 9. Amnesia 10. Love triangles 11. Cheating 12. Age gap 13. The bet 14. Second chance It got harder after number 9. I don't really like any of them. 😅😅
I def agree in that every time a character we're supposed to like cheats in a story it makes me so mad. I also think that feeling is exaggerated by the fact that it seems to be in SO much media right now. And like, when it's a character that is supposed to be bad or unlikeable then I still don't like that they're doing it, but I think it can be good story wise, vs if I'm supposed to like the character it can make it hard to continue to and I'll find myself trying to pretend it didn't happen so I don't have to think about it lol
With Bloom and Sky I would‘ve actually ranked them based on the fake identity troupe from season 1 and maybe including the non accepting attidude from Sky‘s parents and Diaspro‘s meddeling which all is on it‘s peake from season 1-3.
An example for the love triangle could be on The Infernal Devices books by Cassandra Clare (parts of the Shadowhunters series) because the girl is attracted to both guys and they like each other in a platonic way. It's not a true romantic situation but the fact that the guys are parabatai, that they actually like each other and genuinely wish the best for the girl is so good. I don't think a true romantic love triangle could exist because if so, that's a polyamourous relationship. If every people in the triangle likes another person within this triangle, then they should turn it in a poly relationship 🫡
I actually really dislike "pure girl" x "bad boy/playboy trope". Bad boy is ok (which is Flynn Rider), but playboy gives me the severe ick. FMC won't change the "player". He'll probably tell her they aren't exclusive and call her clingy Amnesia trope reminds me of Boys Over Flowers and Master's Sun (I love both despite disliking the trope lol) Looking at these 2 Kdramas, I just remembered poor girl x rich guy trope. I eat that sh*t up every time (and I wanna be delusional)
Honestly, I'd say that's probably also something worth noting with any of these tropes: there tend to be a lot of different variations that may be more or less likable depending on the details. The "Pure Girl + Bad Boy (who is a player)" scenario is different than the "Pure Girl + Bad Boy (who is troubled but not a genuinely bad person)" scenario , and both are different from the "Pure Girl + Bad Boy (who is just a legitimate psychopath)" scenario, and that sort of thing. Since both "Pure Girl" and "Bad Boy" are pretty vague categories that can fit a lot of their own different individual sub-tropes, combining them into a relationship creates an even larger number of possible options that could be anything from 100% relationship goals to absolutely toxic and gross depending on how it's handled.
@@VenathTehN3RD I forgot about the psychopath bad boy! That's also a 50/50 for me. When it's a "yandere", I like it, but when it's a dark romance novel "psychopath", I dislike it (based on book reviews I've seen on YT, I know I would drop the book instantly).
@@burnt_samosa For me, I think the difference between a good and bad "psychopath bad boy" tends to tie into the author's awareness and execution of it. When an author is aware of how messed up the character is and actually uses it as a significant point in the plot/character development is when the trope is at its best. The trope is at its worst when the author writes someone who behaves like a complete psychopath but seems to be completely oblivious to how messed up the character's actions are, with the result being that the characters (and world in general) don't treat the character like the horrible person they are no matter what horrible things they do...because the author doesn't seem to think that what they're doing is bad. And of course, as with any trope, a lot tend to fall somewhere in between.
I'm sorry if I'm petty but rivals and enemies are two different things. Enemy implies some sort of hatred toward the other character, while rival is usually just competitive in nature. You can be rivals but also friends or you can be enemies and rival. Sorry for the rant.
I like age gap stories. Only because in fiction, anything that is said would be true. Take out the ugliness of the trope, like the power inbalance, and make it pure and true. Unless its shown as the toxic thing it is. Also, I read a LOVELY fanfiction where two childhood best friends lose touch, and then reconnect twenty years later because the one of them becomes famous. God, the fic was filled to the brim with cotton candy with a dash of spice and angst. My absolute favorite depiction of friends to lovers ever!!!
Love this ranking! 👏👏 I also love a good secret identity romance - like in Miraculous (obviously), Renegades by Marissa Meyer, Tweet Cute by Emma Lord. So much suspense & drama in how they’ll react to the truth!
If you have ever seen Sailor Moon before it would be great if you could make a video exploring it and the many dynamics, if not it's so iconic and you should watch it!
A lot of times second chances could be right place wrong time. Or they broke up because of some external circumstances but then time passes and they reconnect and grow together. That's the kind I think about in terms of second chances
One trope I don’t like is height difference. Look. I KNOW some people love it, but I just. No. As someone who is rather short, I would NOT want a super tall partner. I would look like their child! And I know that’s not really 100% logical, because obviously I’m not, but I would *feel* like it too. It’s, like, a physically manifested power imbalance. A literal, physical power imbalance. Idk, it just makes me feel icky. I can affect it in some cases, but anything that’s like really extreme or really *emphasised* puts me off
i’m of average height and i dont get the hype either. it just feels like you described- being a physically manifested power imbalance. also how do you do the super cute forehead touch/lean thing 😭
I'm not short but I agree it always disturbed me, I don't want my partner being that much taller than me. Seeing it in film is even more strange they look like a literal child compared to their partner and if its an enemies to lovers, age-gap or bad guy innocent girl type of relationship its even more unsettling. Not to come at anyone in that dates anyone with height differences its just me.
@@Scatterbrained_Watching thank you I’m glad it’s not just me, I actually saw a video of an animated story using sims 4 the game (and other softwares) about a wolf boy falling for a bunny girl or something, and the thumbnail was a full grown man like licking a face of a LITERAL CHILD, she legit looked like a 10 year old character, I clicked and saw everyone in the comments eating it up. So gross.
One of my favorite Shows has a real Love triangle in it, where all three have a connection, not only one to the two others. The Name of the Show ist Siren, and I personally loved and would definetely recommand it.
Sup amanda! There’s this really good manga called “after the rain” which is an age gap romance but with a more mature and nuanced take on the trope. I would recommend it to you since the older male character is incredibly realistic and mature in acknowledging the strange dynamic and because the story itself becomes a very beautiful and melancholic story about adolescence.
I don't like the cheating trope either but Rose had no way out of her engagement. In that time period it wasn't something that you could do under normal circumstances and with Rose's family needing the money, it was out of the question. For that reason I feel that Titanic would have fit better under the forbidden love category. Also, in Gnomeo and Juliet and any other version of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was arranged to marry another man, so she was cheating just like Rose was.
10:17 there's a webtoon called "The Kiss Bet" and... the plot moves with bets but it's not the "oh I'm only doing this because of the bet" but everything actually starts and moves with bets and- it's really good... and also a slow burn... really slow... but I love the pain of it being slow...
First of all do your research right if you truly payed attention to the movie Titanic it’s a beloved classic!! Rose was forced into marriage by her mother who wanted all the money, Rose was only 17 a MINOR forced to be engaged by a 30 yrd man after only 3 months!? Rose wasn’t cheating on that bastard, she deserved more than that as you can tell throughout the movie she didn’t want to be with him at all, she was miserable to the edge of a ship wanting to drown. Until she met Jack, they both took the risks to be with eachother. Jack and Rose showed sacrifice, loyalty, and true love BEST SHIP of them all in my opinion. And that Ship will never sink period.
I just finished the 1st draft of my 25th book last night, and I am definitely one for reusing my favourite tropes aaaaall the time (hurt/comfort, enemies-to-lovers and there's only one bed to name a few!) My latest book as a grown-up fairytale about a knight falling for the shadowmancer she's sworn to kill. Involves a scene of him hiding one of the sleeping pallets so that they have to share... ^_^
About the age gap trope, I had a brief relationship with a 52 year old man when I was 20. I met him when I was 19 and left the country when I was turning 21, so it was a short one. I had had a few relationships before him, but he was my first love. Of course I was aware of the difference in experience and power, but I never felt like that played against me. I agree that in MOST cases it is just older men abusing their position, but sometimes you just fall in love with someone you were not supposed to.
The ONLY way that I can get behind a age gap romance, is if its paranormal / fantastical. For instance Elena Gilbert with Damon Salvatore, or Aragorn and Arwen. (Technically Aragorn and Arwen both have longevity, but Arwen more than Aragorn) Idk why it doesn't bother me, but it doesn't lol, I guess cause vampires Technically don't age, so there isn't a "age gap"? Even if Damon is a couple hundred years older than Elena lol
I’ve had love triangle irl and it effing sucks. Friends to lovers never got out of the friendzone for me despite our best efforts. My marriage was a second chance (I was the immature one) and it’s been wonderful.
With Monopoly Go there is still a risk. My sister once full on assaulted me in the face because I landed on free parking. Now she can just throw her phone at me
Yo so about the Jack and Rose thing, I didn't have an issue with Rose going behind her fiance only cause he was abusive and she did not want to marry him in the first place. And I say this as someone who deplores cheaters more than anyone else. I don't even count what Rose did as cheating as there was no "relationship" to cheat on in the first place tbh. She probably could not have left Cal.
I hate hate HATEEE love triangles, dont get me wrong i love a messy struggle of proving ones love but when they pull out a second lead out of their butts to keep the story going its clear they dont do it to serve the plot they just need something to stall the main leads from getting together and its infuriating.. It is overdone, on webtoon there are so many love triangles in every single story and it gets tiring honestly.
Honestly the only age gap ship that I've really enjoyed (albeit it's not explicitly canon) is between these two characters from a manhwa/webnovel that have a 8-13 year age gap that's mixed with a plethora of other tropes I like. I say 8-13 because the younger character time travelled into the past and considers himself the age he time travelled from, where he was 30 years old and travelled back in time to when he was 25 years old, while the other character was 38 years old when we met him in the current timeline.

for an example of a love triangle that is an *actual* triangle, may I suggest "the iron widow"! the mc has two love interests and for a moment, when they eventually meet there's not only an unspoken brief rivalry about her affection but also... a couple of sparks between the two guys as well 🤭 it kinda turns into a non-labeled poly relationship if I remember correctly hehe
Omg Iron Widow is one of my favorite books! I love seeing it get more attention ❤ it’s so underrated
I love iron widow, so I can 100% recommend it. Just be aware of the fact that it's dark and you're good.
The only form of second chance I like is right person wrong time. My favs are definitely friends to lovers, right person wrong time and star crossed/tragically fated lovers
I don’t like the cheating trope either, but Cal was a violent monster. Rose was probably terrified to call it off.
I didn't watch "Titanic", so i went to search about the relationship between these two and to see how bad it was, and... 30 and 17?!
Rose was also in an "arranged marriage" trope already. Is it cheating if you are forced to be with them? Idk
Rose more had no choice at all.
It's not a slow burn, bc it wasn't burning at all
@@kamota8523it was a dumpster fire
The only reason they didn’t work out the first time is because she let her family get in her head, so it’s about her arc of learning how to be firm in her own convictions.
i'd like second chance if it combined with right person wrong time, like the second chance being more so dating when the time is right for both of them and not being because one of them was a bad partner
the best amnesia trope is for sure is Eleanor and Chidi in The Good Place. In every universe they still belong together and it makes me so happy.
Not using peeta for amnesia trope is criminal
or my darcy and elizabeth for enemies to lovers like they’re the blueprint !! 😭
But peeta didnt have amnesia. He was brainwashed to be kind of sleeper agent to kill Katniss. He still knows and remembers Katniss, its just most of his memories were altered or warped by his Capital conditioning.
I feel like you need to start watching some Korean Dramas cuz they are legit these tropes often all in one drama
Yes!!! Business Proposal is my very favorite, an amazing example of the Fake Dating Trope
fr i only watch kdramas and webtoons sometimes ig and these are pretty common
Yaahhh she definitely does cause all these tropes thrive in different onesss
-> enemies to lovers : the broke mc first meet the handsome rich ml and find him cocky and rude
-> fake dating : since mc is broke and ml needs to find a gf to satisfy his dad he picks her even though he could've pick anyone else but someone he hates
-> friends to lovers : after few episodes and a lot of insufferable cringe scenes (bonus point if it's them being wayyy to close to eachother for whatever reason) they finally learn to appreciate eachother
-> amnesia : mc loses their memories because they got hit by truck-kun so ml has to build their weird situationship all over again
XO Kitty would have been another great example for the love triangle, tho in that case it was more of a love square lmao
Not really a great example imo, this love triangle is the epidome of "two hot guys fighting over a basic and personality-less girl"
i also feel like the 'makeover' troupe and 'don't tell my secret, i'll do anything' troupe should also get talked about. i'm not sure how i feel about it being the only stand alone romantic troupe but it definitely gets interesting when mixed with other troupes.
i used to be turned off by any friends to lovers troupe but recently i came across this grumpy and sunshine, childhood friends to lovers story and something about it just made me keep wanting more 😅
6:59 It's not cheating if there's no relationship. Parents got you engaged and you've never met no one can say it was betrayal
Yes. We can ABSOLUTELY talk about Gnomeo and Juliet. Anytime you please.
I'm a sucker for "Love at first punch", as seeing someone whos never stood up to finally have it done and falling in love with the one person who does is funny and sweet.
Remember that most tropes aren’t always problematic, nor do they always work. It depends on how they’re used.
For me the large age gap is an imbalance of power like you said, but it’s also the fact that they are in different stages in their lives. I mean even if they both are graduated and have jobs, one will have more experience than the other and will likely die sooner, etc! Plus maybe the other person just likes them because of that persons connections.
Just when I felt like I needed a new Amanda video, you always deliver 🙏
My parents were good girl×bad boy
And they're in love to this day
That's so good
Jay and Gloria from Modern Family are like the only age gap romance that’s actually healthy
i fully agree about the second chance trope
I absolutely love the “Gentle Giant” trope. It’s just so sweet and wholesome 😭
Edit: (Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the K Drama “Extraordinary You” falls under this, love that show down btw)
KAGEHINA GOES CRAZYYYY
SAME I FREAKING LOVE BANTER AND ENEMIES TO LOVERS SO SO MUCH
Oh girl when you got to love triangles… I think you’d love the Challengers movie.
1. Slow Burn (extra points if it has enemies to lovers)
2. Enemies to Lovers
3. Forbidden love
4. Rivals to lovers
5. Sunshine x Grumpy
6. One bed trope
7. Fake dating
8. Friends to lovers
9. Amnesia
10. Love triangles
11. Cheating
12. Age gap
13. The bet
14. Second chance
It got harder after number 9. I don't really like any of them. 😅😅
I LOVE your enthusiasm. you seem fun to be around
8:07 PEETA MELLLAARRRKKKKKKK fell in love with KATNISSS TWICEEE
SO EXCITED for bridgerton on May 16th, I’ve never been a friend to lovers trope kinda girl but recently I e been so into it. SO SO SO EXCITED
Thank you Amanda, more people need to be brave enough to say I like Gnomeo and Juliet, even just for the Elton John soundtrack
With Bloom and Sky I would‘ve actually ranked them based on the fake identity troupe from season 1 and maybe including the non accepting attidude from Sky‘s parents and Diaspro‘s meddeling which all is on it‘s peake from season 1-3.
What about the mind-control trope? They've both been brainwashed by a villain during the initial run.
In humble opinion the best love triangle I've ever come across is jem, will and tessa from The Infernal devices.
I actually really dislike "pure girl" x "bad boy/playboy trope". Bad boy is ok (which is Flynn Rider), but playboy gives me the severe ick. FMC won't change the "player". He'll probably tell her they aren't exclusive and call her clingy
Amnesia trope reminds me of Boys Over Flowers and Master's Sun (I love both despite disliking the trope lol)
Looking at these 2 Kdramas, I just remembered poor girl x rich guy trope.
My fav trope ever is "rivals to friends to lovers" like lumity and caskett
thank you for the upload goat 🙌
As a Demisexual, for the longest time friends to lovers was the ONLY acceptable romance to me. Could not relate to anything else 😂
Please read the webtoon “Serena” it’s SO good and I think you’d love it 😭😭🙏🏼
I DESPISE slow burns with a passion, but I've been told this may be because I've never seen any good ones.
So much suspense & drama in how they’ll react to the truth!
i LOVE a good secret identity
Miraculous was a mix of secret Identity & slow burn trope
If you have ever seen Sailor Moon before it would be great if you could make a video exploring it and the many dynamics, if not it's so iconic and you should watch it!
A lot of times second chances could be right place wrong time. Or they broke up because of some external circumstances but then time passes and they reconnect and grow together. That's the kind I think about in terms of second chances
the second lead syndrome in a love triangle is so real
@@renoirrr literally!! Forehead touches makes the world go round
@@cloutwolf5665 YES EXACTLY. That’s what I was getting at when I said “emphasised”. It’s just really uncomfortable
So gross.
I’m sorry but fake dating troupes r so cute, a book I like doing that is Hani and Ishu’s guide to Fake Dating, it’s so cute 😍😍
The Segway into the ad read was hilarious😂 good video!
One of my favorite Shows has a real Love triangle in it, where all three have a connection, not only one to the two others. The Name of the Show ist Siren, and I personally loved and would definetely recommand it.
There’s definitely a _love triangle_ of a sort in *She’s The Man* … and I _love _ it! It’s part of the reason why I enjoy that movie so much.
Shrek Forever After is the epitome of the amnesia trope, I said what I said
When the obssed with the other character starts so slowly loose interest over time and the not interested character starts having feelings for them!!
Also, in Gnomeo and Juliet and any other version of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was arranged to marry another man, so she was cheating just like Rose was.
heartbreak high season 2 has a genuine love triangle where all the points are connected! pls watch it i think you would enjoy it
10:17 there's a webtoon called "The Kiss Bet" and... the plot moves with bets but it's not the "oh I'm only doing this because of the bet" but everything actually starts and moves with bets and- it's really good... and also a slow burn... really slow... but I love the pain of it being slow...
this makes so much sense for you
First of all do your research right if you truly payed attention to the movie Titanic it’s a beloved classic!!
(Technically Aragorn and Arwen both have longevity, but Arwen more than Aragorn)
Idk why it doesn't bother me, but it doesn't lol, I guess cause vampires Technically don't age, so there isn't a "age gap"? Even if Damon is a couple hundred years older than Elena lol
That sponsership transition was so smooth
tbh the example of the bad boy x good girl being Flynn and Rapunzel was GENEROUS i was thinking more like after lmaoo😭😭😭
I’ve had love triangle irl and it effing sucks. Friends to lovers never got out of the friendzone for me despite our best efforts. My marriage was a second chance (I was the immature one) and it’s been wonderful.
Slow burn will always be my favorite
The second chance troupe is giving November 9
I loveeeee friends to lover and the first one that came to mind was finny and autumn
I feel like Amanda and Coley (Coleydoesthings) would be besties, I can't explain why, I just know it-
50 first dates is the best example of the amnesia trope, it's literally so amazing
Here in 5 minutes. I love your videos!!! 🥰
Any total drama fans watching will know that series has at least half of these tropes
With Monopoly Go there is still a risk. My sister once full on assaulted me in the face because I landed on free parking. Now she can just throw her phone at me
I just saw you have 139k subs I'm so proud!! I've been here since 20k :)
OMG I am also super excited for the new Haikyuu Movie like really excited
I love finally being able to support you day of dropping, been binging your vids for forever now😁 keep it up Queen💯🔥
Kinda sad that secret identity trope isn’t here. Superman and Lois, or miraculous are good examples
Honestly the only age gap ship that I've really enjoyed (albeit it's not explicitly canon) is between these two characters from a manhwa/webnovel that have a 8-13 year age gap that's mixed with a plethora of other tropes I like. I say 8-13 because the younger character time travelled into the past and considers himself the age he time travelled from, where he was 30 years old and travelled back in time to when he was 25 years old, while the other character was 38 years old when we met him in the current timeline.
the amnesia trope only works to revive longterm couples and ill die on this hill
