I’ll never understand how Wish cost $200 million to make when Across the Spider-Verse, a movie that looks at least 10x as good, only cost $100 million. There has to be some massive accounting fraud going on at Disney right now.
Well, we did find out that the Spiderverse animators were overworked and underpaid to an incredibly unhealthy extent, but I doubt Disney treated their team any better so...yeah
The downfall of Disney is nothing new, people have been talking about this for several years (from what I've seen on RUclips). The company just doesn't take risks anymore, which is half of what made their company successful in the first place. They were innovators, willing to try new things and make people impressed with a format of storytelling they've never seen before. If they were still doing that, Wish or whichever movie would be pushing boundaries for kids' movies: what animation style can be used, what's too scary, what's too complex, all things explored in the Puss in Boots sequel, for example. Instead, they're recycling their more recent content since it worked out well for them, giving us half-reheated leftovers, and expecting people to eat it up. And the worst part is, because they're so huge, people will eat it up. Wish will be an example of this.
Honesty I’m expecting inside out two to end up like the incredibles two. It will do gang busters at the cost of continuity and actually story telling. I hope things get better but my expectations are quite low sadly.
disney needs to start taking risks. Im tired of "quirky relatable not-like-other-girls girl with her animal side kick goes on an adventure to stop an evil villain everyone thinks is a good person" like please try something else, i can name at least 2 movies that fit that description
this is exactly how i feel about disney as of late. i wish they weren’t so afraid of taking risks, i think it could potentially work for them if they did but idk when that will happen bc everything disney seems to greenlight these days feels so creatively bankrupt :(
They pushed out all of their quality talent b/c of diversity Equity and inclusion initiatives. Disney will not get back to quality entertainment until there is a stock takeover and the board and Iger are replaced…This is a tall order with BlackRock is the largest shareholder… Pretty funny democrats use to call out BlackRock as an evil billionaire private equity group. Now that they are playing ball with the leftest we hear nothing bad about them. So sad
3D can be good, it's just Disney plays it so safe to the point where everything looks the same. People are tired of the same thing over and over, and the box office has been reflecting that lately.
I agree, every single movie since like frozen has looked the exact same. Same colors same style same 3D animation that I’m so aware is 3D that it’s jarring
Movie theatres aren't dying out at all. People just aren't willing to go see whatever is on anymore. This year I've been to the cinema to see Puss in Boots the last wish, Super Mario, Barbie and Five nights at Freddy's, and each time the theatre was full. Keep in mind, fnaf released on a streaming service on the same day.
yeah but all those movies have big fanbases and that is what filled those theaters, original movies or lesser know movies usually arent as popular, i went to the cinema i think a year ago. and there where hardly any people there. it depends on the countr or city and on the movies, all your examples dont really work in my opinion
@@justarandomchick767 Absolutely no one was a puss in boots fan, the first movie is literally never talked about even now. People went to see the last wish because it was good.
@@amazingspiderlad the major part of that was the shrek fanbase and then after where the people that heard about it from them. It would suprise you how many people adore shrek and watched puss in boots 2 for that reason. And your completely skipping over my argument. Even not counting puss in boots 2 all the others you mentioned still have a huge fanbase supporting them
I'm actually stoked that Disney is in another flop era, because whenever they're in a flop era, the movies that follow after said flop era tend to be really, REALLY good. Case and point, when Disney released The Black Cauldron back in the 80s and almost went bankrupt because of it, they released The Little Mermaid, which was followed by beauty and the Beast, which was followed by Aladdin, which was followed by The Lion King. And again, in the 2000s, Disney was struggling in the animation department, but then they released Tangled, which was followed by Wreck it Ralph, which was followed by Frozen, which was followed by Big hero 6, Zootopia and Moana. Also, animation historians have a clear and concise line for when the revival era ended (2010-2021)
The main difference here though is that The black cauldron and a lot of the 2000s disney movies were actually good. They didn't do well financially but audiences still love them to this day.
@@amazingspiderlad meh. I feel like Wish and Strange Worlds are gonna inhabit the same boat as Black Cauldron or Treasure Planet or Chicken Little where people in the future are gonna go "These movies were good actually." or "they were so underrated" or "People just didn't understand them at the time"
I WISH they had just made a 2D animated film like they originally planned, also disney wanted to have a villain couple for wish but they scrapped the idea. Unfortunately they just don’t seem currently invested in taking risks in their storytelling, a lot of their newer films feel recycled and sanitized.
The queen could’ve feigned allyship with the good side in order to feed info to the king on the bad side and eventually betray the good side and I would’ve ate that shit right up
@@orangeslash1667 Big studios take the wrong lesson when their movies flop. Oh, this movie was 2D? Must be why people didn't want to see it versus maybe the movie just didn't seem interesting. It's like how when Catwoman and Elektra bombed the lesson studios took from that was 'oh people don't want to see action movies about women.' Instead of realizing both films were crap.
I think Barbieheimer is a very good example of original concepts that was a big enough reason for people to go to the cinema. Disney need to begin branching out into more original and interesting concepts like these films. I also think marketing is a big issue, being able to make it a relevant internet discussion is also important. Once again Barbieheimer is a good example of this with people dressing up in pink to go see Barbie. This can even be seen with the second minion movie with the gentleminions. Theres so many new factors and ideas that there just not considering.
Neither of those movies are original. Oppenheimer is based off the historical account of making the first nuclear bomb. It’s literally a biopic and Barbie is based of a children’s toy that Mattel created in the 1950s that has had dozens of films and tv adaptations since its release
@@savannahinparis I know that there not wholly original ideas and are based on things but its more the fact that it was seen as exciting and new. The Barbie movie was such a big hit because it was seen as exciting and it was actually a good movie, people no longer want to see franchises or formulaic films in my perspective as the majority of tropes have been worn out as the movie business becomes more crowded. However the point still stands tat they are wildly more successful because they were less formulaic and broke the mold slightly even if they are not wholly original. Aswell as this if you think about the majority of films they will always be based on a concept or an idea, Barbie and oppenheimer were just more literal concepts but that does not stop them necessarily from being original, For example Toy Story is based on the concept of what would happen if Toys were alive. Gladiator is based upon the concept of the ancient greek gladiators. In my opinion it is all relevant. Thoughts?
@@DORAisD34D Thats a good point, its jist in my opinion overall the quality has really dropped, Encanto was released 3 years ago and in my opinion was their last good film. It still however failed at the box office because they released it onto Disney plus, actually Disney plus has meant a lot of loss for Disney in cinemas but I digress.
Personally I think Disney started its flop era with Frozen 2. It was extremely rushed (they even said it in the documentary) and was clearly made to remake that "we're not like other Disney films" Frozen was. It tried WAY too hard to be different while trying to pander at the same time. Movies don't have to be revolutionary, they have to be FUN. Yes, it's amazing when they can reach us as adults. But that comes with passion. SHOW me WHY this is a classic Disney. Don't recycle. Reinvent. Let the story be itself, make characters because they're interesting and need their story told. Not to be a marketable plushie. In this essay I will...
I was so upset when I heard the original plans for wish! a shapeshifting star boy?!?!??? the first villain couple?!?!??? I feel like it would’ve been really cool to see a whole movie from his perspective and make him the “first” Disney prince with asha as his love interest ofc!
The eradication of magic in exchange for relentless, nickle-and-diming greed from the parks is the most egregious crime committed by Disney’s current management. Disneyland was a dream that was meant to be enjoyed by all families, not just the rich. Nowadays 80% of people can’t afford it, which is ridiculous.
@@chomosuke0720why is it a problem if single childless people want to enjoy themselves? Unless you’re referring to weird, rabid fans who shower once every thousand years of course then I understand
14:11 That’s a non-argument. Disney didn’t make “kids movies”, they made family movies. It’s why the whole family could watch their movies and enjoy them equally. It was a smart tactic because the parents also looked forward and they could enjoy the films with their children. They just don’t have intelligent people writing them anymore.
Writers don’t have full control over the scripts of the movies they work on. You’re ignoring the influence and restraints of the higher-ups at Disney, whose goal will always be making a movie as profitable as possible. Insulting the intelligence of writers is childish, and ignorant.
lol i thought u were someone who goes to school with me for a sec bcs of the pfp (we did the addams family musical in may, genuinely forgot it was on broadway before and not just my school lol)
my main problem with everything is definitely what you mentioned about the amount of movies in theaters per month. like i straight up don’t have the money to spare to go see the new marvel movie and the new animated disney movie and the eras tour movie and the new hunger games movie and another movie that i want to see that’s not disney. i’ll watch them (maybe) when they get put on disney+, but it’s just sooooo much, especially with marvel
Yeah due to the cost of living audience are becoming more picky to see movies. Barbie and Spiderverse were the main movies I was interested to see in the Summer
The fact that THIS is the same studio that made the renaissance films is just sad. The renaissance era had the best Disney films and if they could use that same energy in the downfall era these movies would've been classics. I'm disappointed in you Disney.
@@jennah5990 it’s probably because a lot of people didn’t watch it until it came out on Disney Plus in December, so it was most popular for the first couple of months of 2022
The past few years I've enjoyed other studio animated movies more: Nimona, Sea Beast, Mutant Mayhem, and Mitchell's vs Machines are some of my favorite animated movies from 2021-2023. None of them are Disney.
Have you seen Puss in Boots: the Last Wish? Also recommend that, especially over Disney's Wish. (Man DreamWorks really scooped Disney there, one-upping them at the "wishing star" prompt against Disney's own attempt at a 100 year celebration film. The Shrek series in general made fun of Disney, but this isn't parody; with Puss in Boots they've now literally outshown Disney's star).
all of those plus spiderverse and the last wish for me. all of these have such enjoyable styles and good stories, it really cant be that hard to make something original, fun, and captivating
I'd also like to point out that Disney canned Nimona after they bought out Fox. They didn't want to release it bc it had gay people haha. The movie only happened because Netflix picked it up and thank God they did because it was so good.
Friendly Space Ninja has a really good video about what you said about there being too many movies to see them all. He talks about how there's a blockbuster every week when there used to only be a couple of them a year. Studios these days rely too much on big budget movies instead of low/mid budget ones.
the whole "it's for kids don't take it too seriously" thing genuinely pisses me off so much because so much of the media i liked as a child was genuinely really good and was entertaining for the adults too. i used to make my parents watch my stupid shows and they LIKED them. zack and cody is not even that serious but i used to make my mom watch it with me and she thought it was actually funny. i rewatch shows i watched as a kid all the time and like it. i try to watch the kids' tv now (with my cousins) and just get really overstimulated
i agree so much! my parents enjoyed watching zack and cody, hannah montana, and wizards with me because they were actually funny and entertaining. todays kids shows are absolutely terrible
I think another big problem is that Disney used to make movies that could be enjoyed by all ages. Now they're shifting into making movies that can only be enjoyed by young kids who, quite frankly, would be just as entertained by some low budget toy channel on RUclips.
Every movie ive seen in theaters lately was by word of mouth. I wasnt going to see The Last Wish, but then I heard from people on the internet that it was shockingly good, and it was! Ditto for EEAAO and Talk to Me. I trust peers, not ads.
I feel like a part of this is Disney burnout. They own *a lot* of brands and IPs, *a lot* of the movies being released in theaters, and a large chunk of the entertainment industry. Not only that, but they release 50+ movies and tv shows for some of their biggest brands (Star Wars and Marvel). That's way too much content for a single person to consume all at once, and it's not really even worth it if the content itself is mediocre and it was made with writers and actors who can barely afford health care.
I think one of the major things as well is the Disney burnout. Like it feels like there are wayyyyyy too many movies coming out every year and the quality of said movies and the working conditions of how they were made sound extremely stressful. I really wanted to like Wish. But from the first Trailer it already was seeming off. I want to like Disney movies but there’s only been a handful of movies that have been really good
You hit the crux of it. The simple fact is Disney has become risk-adverse. Instead of backing up every risky project with a safe project, they've decided to just play it safe with everything they put out. So, remakes, sequels, and formulas. For some reason, executives and bean counters don't associate projects doing well with financial success. I dunno, maybe they buy into their own profit-loss bullshit accounting that they use to screw people out of money. If they were truly smart and savvy, they'd notice which of their films did well commercially and critically--the ones that deviated from the norm of whatever franchise or genre they were in, typically--and push to do more along THOSE lines. Or, maybe Disney has just been so high on the hog for so long that they've forgotten what it felt like to have genuine competition. Maybe if Warners could get their shit straight they'd put Disney back in the fight and off cruise control. Basically, Hollywood is a mess right now and could benefit with less suits and more business-savvy creative people in top positions .
Back in 2016/2017, I used to go to the movies multiple times a month, there are so many movies I was so excited to see. Now I really don’t feel that way anymore. Feels like nothing is worth the ticket money nowadays.
One of my best friends watched wish before I did and told me it was he hated it (important context: he's a film student and has watched. a lot of movies and he stated before that he didn't exactly _hate_ any). It actually kind of exceeded the rock bottom expectations I had after listening to his rants... ? It was still extremely lacking though - I don't think I would've gotten through it if I wasn't watching it with another friend Also I keep forgetting Marvel is part of Disney for some reason ?? But there are so many "Downfall of Marvel" videos on RUclips too lol Anyways I loved this video and your videos in general !! They're very vibey
I had the same opinions about Wish when I first saw trailers, but the style honestly wouldn't be that bad for literally any other animation company. Disney is supposed to be the lead in animated movies, so I don't feel it was the right approach for them to go with this (this coming from a graphic designer)
Absolutely while I have no interest in seeing WISH I echo this sentiment for Chicken Little as they’d gotten way too much credit for Toy Story’s existence (which I understand was for contractual reasons at the time) but nonetheless they practically invented something as trivial as a sticky note flip book animation not to mention Snow White came out during the Great Depression so they had no reason for Chicken Little to look the way it did especially not at the turn of the century
Personally, I’ve been really enjoying recent Pixar movies (particularly Luca & Elemental)!! But I’ve always had a soft spot for Pixar, and I really admire how they tell stories. Every movie of theirs seems to be unique from one another, even if the art style is similar. Disney animation on the other hand, seems to be producing very similar stories?? Or at least the characters seem the same, and especially the humour. The same artstyle is more boring than it is with Pixar as they don’t seem to be trying to change up much. Maybe I have a little too much to say on this topic, but I’m also just reallyyy excited for Pixar’s next movie, Elio :) *not sure how I feel abt Inside Out 2 yet tho
I admit ELEMENTAL was not actually as bad as I thought it would have been but I genuinely liked SOUL & LUCA although they’re all a bit flawed in their own way.
@@theanimationcritictaylorri1264yes!! When I saw the trailer for Elemental I was suuuuper skeptical as it looked really generic, but it truly surprised me when I watched it with what a genuine and inspiring story it is :)
@@elive19 I will give ELEMENTAL a massive bonus for attention to detail when came to elements meshing with other elements such as smoke when flooding to the coal shop and she panics and has to fire herself again that’s more the attention to detail that I appreciate it sounds like WISH didn’t even have the decency to do that? How rough was it when you saw it? Although there was one major flaw with ELEMENTAL which is that when it came to the prejudice aligory it was as subtle as a 1Ton Anvil falling from the sky which is to say NOT SUBTLE IN THE SLIGHTEST.
@@theanimationcritictaylorri1264yeah just Elemental’s attention to detail is insane and it completely deserves and and all positive feedback :) As for Wish, I haven’t actually seen it yet!! Anyhow, yeah from what I’ve seen of it doing checks in the theatre and from people talking abt it online, im not exactly pumped to see it?? Like i will bc free movie and also i judged elemental just as harshly beforehand, but still.
Wanna know what I think would make a new Disney movie stand out? ROMANCE. There, I said it! Lately it seems like main characters aren't allowed to fall in love because is not eMpoOWeRiNg or something but Disney used to have such lovely romances like it really does add SOMETHING special to the movies!!! Like people were giggling and kicking their feet at Ariel and Eric in the live action so why not actually you know, give a princess A LOVE INTEREST???
I know this is Pixar but it's under Disney so whatever. Elemental had romance in it and the movie barely managed to swing a profit after a horrible opening week. Granted Elemental isn't a bad film, but Disney Romance definitely is not enough to bring people back to theaters
I don't think romance is the problem. Personally I think romances are boring. What the Disney animated movies need are a good plot and villain. Generational trauma just doesn't cut it. I wish they would cut back to one animated movie a year at most. Quality over quantity would be the best solution.
Luca and Encanto were the ONLY movies I liked in the past 3 years. No Way Home was good, but good lord those other movies were trash and the actors don’t deserve such bad storytelling.
Same, those two really spoke to me. Everything post Princess and the Frog has felt really samey with the quirky girl and the story being a big fetch quest and the romance having far less emphasis. It feels made by committee rather than a heartfelt story. With Encanto it just worked because it was a unique family story and Luca being parallel to a coming of age movie made it special.
@@Nightman221kMirabel doesn’t strike me as quirky. And Rapunzel, Moana, and Anna are all likable and are their own characters despite sharing similar personalities
this is crazy to hear bc i remember 2000s disney (NOT PIXAR) was getting slammed for releasing straight ass, in fact u can find youtube videos with millions of views saying so, and the sequel era was considered the beginning of the low point… this isn’t new. Disney themselves have been on a steady decline since the early 2000s. they bought star wars, pixar, & pushed marvel bc their original content hasn’t been cutting it since the 90s. idk
imo guardians 3 was the last marvel movie that actually blew me out of the water, and with gunn leaving i doubt we'll get a great marvel movie anytime soon (unless theres a whole organizational restructure or smthn)
I feel like my time in Disneyland a couple of years ago (before covid) was okay, but it was not really something incredibly outgoing. I feel like I had as much fun at the local, more affordable amusement park where tickets were 25 cents than the overpriced trip with characters from movies. But I don't think my opinion would be the best because even before that trip, I was also the kid who wanted to feed ducks instead of doing anything at the park. I was more entertained with the idea of feeding ducks than the literal characters and fun rides at the expensive put-together park, and I don’t think that has changed for me now over a decade later (Sadly can't feed bread to ducks as it's not good for them)
ducks can eat oats though if im not mistaken so you can just bring oats to a park instead!! also i think they like peas and sweetcorn too so theres still plenty of things you an feed the ducks :D
I honestly think it’s a better experience to go to one of the international Disney parks. The tickets are much more affordable and their domestic tourists really don’t care as much about the parks so it’s not very crowded. Ofc there’s a plane ticket involved with going overseas so I guess it breaks even in the end. maybe take advantage of college study abroad trips to go overseas with financial aid and then stop by the nearest theme park.
Girl forgot abt Marry Poppins (first one) for the Disney live action section, which was incredibly innovative and a wonderful storyline that lends new meaning to the story each time you watch it bc as you grow up the complexity of the situations the characters are in become clearer. It really was one of the most magical and fun movies Disney had ever produced.
Live action vs Live action remakes. The OG Mary Poppins was an original story and a hit. The live action remakes are all cash grabs banking on the nostalgia for the old IPs
I agree with every point you brought up! I wish that Disney took more risks with their films and tapped into the creativity they have on staff more. So often do you look at the concept art and early sketches and see a movie that is often times a lot more interesting conceptually(ie Frozen, Wish ect). It gets run through corporate, scrubbing it clean of any of that. I know Disney movies are family movies(mainly aimed at kids) but with their recent films I just feel that they are talking down and hand holding too much with them. Kids can absolutely handle more serious topics(ex: avatar the last airbender, spiderverse, puss in boots the last wish) if you dont spell it out so obvious to them. I think people are just fed up with 1) lack of good fleshed out villians 2) lack of risks taken. For WISH it wouldve been amazing if they made it in 2D to pay homage to their earlier films and the craft that made this company thrive as long as it has. But oh well I guess🤷🏻. Not saying its a terrible movie but it feels like I'll forget this movie even came out within a year.
1. No Way Home is co-produced with Sony. And Barbie and Super Mario show that billion dollar movies are definitely possible, just not by Disney. 2. Disney has not yet broken even with their Star Wars purchase. Remember that half of the box office goes to the theaters and the other half to Disney. So they have made $3 billion theatrically. But they cost a billion to produce. And they spent over a billion on Galaxy’s Edge and Galactic Starcruiser. Just ask yourself, if they were making higher profits on Star Wars in the theater, why are they in a 5 year pause?
I'm glad you brought that up because whenever a movie bombs at the box office, they will have the knee-jerk response: "BUT...BUT...IT MADE 600 MILLION DOLLARS!" They assume that studios just keep all the money to themselves. Not knowing that some of the money goes to the theaters. It might be alot of money to us regular folks, but it is not much to a Hollywood studio.
HIII unrelated to the vid just wanna say that ur one of my fave youtubers as of late and i really love ur content!!! i listen/watch ur vids as i crochet a lot its really funnn... i hope u always have a great day and that ur blankets r always warm 💜
I think the problem of wish isn’t just the storyline, there’s also the problem with the combination of 3-D and 2-D animation. Is there a reason why Disney can’t return to original hand drawn 2D?
I think it’s because hand drawn animation is supposedly expensive and too time consuming. I agree, I miss the days when Disney produced wonderful films. Now everything feels disgusting. Take Enchanto, they could have had a wonderful message about not needing to have powers in order to be loved or special but no they had to give the entire family back their abilities. Also the live action movies really suck. Except for Cinderella. Apparently it really fleshes out the stories of Cinderella and her prince.
When people say kids movies are bad they aren’t entirely wrong. They should be better. I loved miraculous as a child, but miraculous nowadays is the definition of absolute garbage. That’s why so many people love bluest it’s because it proves their can be good kids shows but there are bad ones that overview it.
Also my family recently visited Disney and it wasn’t as I remember as a kid, we were tired most of the time and hated walking and standing in lines even with the fast pass there was still a long line. Animal kingdom wasn’t fun at all. Neither was Hollywood studies accept for the fireworks. And the only decent park was magic kingdom. The food was decent, and there were a few super fun moments. Disney movies have gone down hill a lot too and I think they forgot how to write good storylines and movies. They need better writers and directors.
@@TheFandomGirlCreations I went to Disney World with my family for New Years in 2019 and Magic Kingdom was an absolute nightmare, just way too many people. I found the other parks more enjoyable because I had room to walk and the wait times were pretty reasonable
@@lordtickledck7012 I understand that. While magic kingdom was fun for me I get your point it was a lot of walking lines and standing in the sun and because of the fact it’s like a main park it was very crowded. Hollywood studios and Animal kingdom I can agree were very open and had a lot more space to walk like you said. But I still felt very tired there but that’s because it was day 3 of straight up parks and 2 weeks of vacation before that.. expo was another one I went to and it was super fun with rides but it was very tiring to walk around all the time to get to places. The only thing keeping the trip from being the worst was that we had night passes and fast lanes that let us skip the lines and be there after hours so there were less people. But they were so expensive too and we ate there 3 times as well it was WAY to expensive and I think they should cut down on over pricing there stuff. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to get a hotel there as well. Just way to much. Still really fun and there rides and social events were good but they need to make things cheaper and find a way to make lines a lot less longer because I’m sure people have died there due to heatstroke, walking to much, dehydration, and heart attacks…
I miss the live action and animated shows when they were actually good. I also miss the way they did movies with good storytelling. Old disney was way better than new disney.
@@dougbriglmen716it’s funny because everything they say about Disney remakes is their live action remakes, completely forgetting the animated side of things like Encanto, Soul, Luca, and even Turning Red
Hot take: even if Disney didn’t change their movie formula at all, if they just released no movie for a year or two, the hype alone would probably help them immensely.
since they announced wish, my instincts were immediately like THIS IS BAD NO THANKS. It baffles me how people didn't see it coming. It's clearly bad because they are repeating the same tropes over and over again
I really liked wish but even I felt that it was indeed lacking in areas and do miss the traditional hand drawn animation style it isn’t a horrible movie but I do feel like it had the potential to be so much more
In the argument for the Disney live action retellings, I think Disney needs to do better to sell the “reimagining” part, because that’s what they started off as. I would say the best example of these are the movies that added and broadened the movie in a way that wasn’t necessary but it did improve it in a way! For example, the story arc they gave Eric in the live action little mermaid, he already was a fan favorite, but his backstory, and what they showed about him with his parents did a good job to connect with him more. I feel like Disney just needs to do a little bit better in selling the aspect of them being reimaginings, because that’s what the OG animated movies were; reimaginings of classic fairytales!
Disney used to be trend setters, but now they just follow trends. Snow White is the reason animated movies existed in the first place and the Disney Renaissance led to other studios attempting to do the animated broadway musical format. Look at Disney now. When animated films started using CGI, they followed along. When they saw PiB2 and Spiderverse doing well, they attempted to fuse 2D and 3D without understanding why they work.
The Spiderman movies are released by Sony instead of Disney. It's a deal they struck with Marvel Studios to distribute the Spidey films while ensuring he was a part of the MCU
Personally I think bias and nostalgia is going really strong when criticizing Disney, that's just human nature, but when looking at everything objectively, it looks even worse! Disney is truly abandoning artistic integrity in favour of cold and calculated products that pander to the audience's nostalgia while removing all the soul out of everything in the process
I think if anything those plot points just prove that you can't really trust rotten tomatos to see if a movie is good or not... at least not without reading actual reviews, not ones making general statements about how "fun" or "woke" it is. also the lazy part has to do with the writing and the directing, when people call a movie lazy, they're not calling the people who actually build the sets and do the cgi and stuff lazy.
i’m a major disney fan but i completely agree. moana was the last decent release and was a decline from frozen by a lot imo. ppl mention encanto but that’s an outlier
as someone with a disneyland pass who goes the parks pretty often, i really felt this bc the cast members have gotten so much more irritable. i don’t blame them, the pay isn’t great and the treatment of employees probably isn’t either… but why would u voluntarly work at disney if u have it and u could get a job u enjoy with better pay. like i’ve had multiple cast members get pissed at me for very rational and reasonable situations. ESPECIALLY ON RISE OF RESISTANCE, istg every person on the ride is so angry, like it’s not a character anymore they’re all just genuinely wishing death upon u.
It ASTOUNDS me that Wish cost twice as much as Spiderverse to make and yet looks worse. There’s no excuse at this point. If you want your own Spiderverse, you have to actually fucking put in the effort they did across the board with the writing and animation.
Apparently the team working on Wish suffered major layoffs in early 2023. Which uh... might have been why the animation looks so wonky. And the fact that it was released at the end of this year makes me think Disney forced the animators to push the movie out by the end of the year to be on time for the 100 year celebration despite the layoffs.
@@catapultato1733 Oh I know and they should rightfully be shamed for how they treated their staff. But that's not the point I'm making. The point I'm making is that the effort put into that movie from every aspect can be felt in every shot. Whereas with Wish they're trying to buy the effort rather than do it.
i have the DVD of home on the range LMAO,, it's a silly movie, i cringe, but there's a lot of wild animations (ie more explosions than one would think would be in a movie where the protagonists are cows) so it's a good time when i watch it at least lol

I’ll never understand how Wish cost $200 million to make when Across the Spider-Verse, a movie that looks at least 10x as good, only cost $100 million. There has to be some massive accounting fraud going on at Disney right now.
For real. Same goes for The Creator, which only cost $80 million and had much better vfx than most of those $200 million sci-fi blockbusters today

Wish will be an example of this.
i really appreciate your pfp thankyou for making my day better with goats🙇♂🙇♂🙇♂🙇♂🐐

I miss how Disney usually uses traditional 2D animation back then, 3D is a bit ok but it gets a bit boring sometimes.
Yeah, I know 3D can look beautiful. But I’ll always have a soft spot for 2D animation.
Yeah I miss 2D
3D can be good, it's just Disney plays it so safe to the point where everything looks the same.
People are tired of the same thing over and over, and the box office has been reflecting that lately.

Are you forgetting Encanto? That was original and smart
Thoughts?

It was extremely rushed (they even said it in the documentary) and was clearly made to remake that "we're not like other Disney films" Frozen was. It tried WAY too hard to be different while trying to pander at the same time. Movies don't have to be revolutionary, they have to be FUN. Yes, it's amazing when they can reach us as adults. Have you seen Puss in Boots: the Last Wish? Also recommend that, especially over Disney's Wish.

Encanto is good for all ages
i agree so much! my parents enjoyed watching zack and cody, hannah montana, and wizards with me because they were actually funny and entertaining. todays kids shows are absolutely terrible
I think another big problem is that Disney used to make movies that could be enjoyed by all ages. Now they're shifting into making movies that can only be enjoyed by young kids who, quite frankly, would be just as entertained by some low budget toy channel on RUclips.
I mean there's a reason Cocomelon is so popular
How tf was Encanto not meant for adults?
Encanto?
Encanto was risky. It was a super different kind of story structure, that a lot of people ended up really liking
? It was still extremely lacking though - I don't think I would've gotten through it if I wasn't watching it with another friend

Same, those two really spoke to me. Everything post Princess and the Frog has felt really samey with the quirky girl and the story being a big fetch quest and the romance having far less emphasis. It feels made by committee rather than a heartfelt story. With Encanto it just worked because it was a unique family story and Luca being parallel to a coming of age movie made it special.

I was more entertained with the idea of feeding ducks than the literal characters and fun rides at the expensive put-together park, and I don’t think that has changed for me now over a decade later

Encanto was risky. It was a super different kind of story structure, that a lot of people ended up really liking

I grew up with home on the range and idk if it’s the nostalgia but I love that movie! The villain song scared me so much as a kid lol.
I was the opposite, I would always rewind the tape to watch that part
I think the problem of wish isn’t just the storyline, there’s also the problem with the combination of 3-D and 2-D animation. Is there a reason why Disney can’t return to original hand drawn 2D?
I think it’s because hand drawn animation is supposedly expensive and too time consuming. I agree, I miss the days when Disney produced wonderful films. Now everything feels disgusting. Take Enchanto, they could have had a wonderful message about not needing to have powers in order to be loved or special but no they had to give the entire family back their abilities. Also the live action movies really suck. Except for Cinderella. Apparently it really fleshes out the stories of Cinderella and her prince.
they literally threw out the hand-drawing tools they used during the rennaisance.

Disney is just depressing lately
They’ll recover and bounce back like they always have done, history tends to repeat itself.
Encanto was 2 years ago, calm down
@@dougbriglmen716Hopefully
Wasnt everyone going crazy over Encanto
@@dougbriglmen716it’s funny because everything they say about Disney remakes is their live action remakes, completely forgetting the animated side of things like Encanto, Soul, Luca, and even Turning Red
Hot take: even if Disney didn’t change their movie formula at all, if they just released no movie for a year or two, the hype alone would probably help them immensely.
And then they try to pretend Treasure Planet doesn't exist, when its one of the best book to animated movie adptations
since they announced wish, my instincts were immediately like THIS IS BAD NO THANKS. It baffles me how people didn't see it coming. It's clearly bad because they are repeating the same tropes over and over again
The intro tho--
I sooo miss my Disney era
I would be interested to watch an unhinged recap of Keeper of the Lost Cities. I loved that series
11:10 FIFY, when people stopped caring about the pandemic :/
Unrelated to that, love the addition of scatterplots, we stan a STEM queen 🌟
Omg I miss old Disney sometimes gurl like Disney Channel and Disney Junior
Dude. The price of a movie ticket here in Bethesda, MD is $23.54!! That is for either a child or an adult!
I’ve seen Home on the Range once and have never thought of it since. I always forget it even existed.
Disney used to be trend setters, but now they just follow trends.
Snow White is the reason animated movies existed in the first place and the Disney Renaissance led to other studios attempting to do the animated broadway musical format.
Look at Disney now.
When animated films started using CGI, they followed along. When they saw PiB2 and Spiderverse doing well, they attempted to fuse 2D and 3D without understanding why they work.
toy story which is a pixar/disney movie is the first cgi movie
Finally someone else knows the masterpiece that is the BUDDIES MOVIES THEY STILL ARE SO GOOD NOW
You did NOT just call that Santa Claus Movie a Banger💀💀😭😭
Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home are not Disney movies
In california an adult movie ticket is $18 and the popcorn $11. It’s gotten ridiculous while the quality of the disney movies has crashed.
The Spiderman movies are released by Sony instead of Disney. It's a deal they struck with Marvel Studios to distribute the Spidey films while ensuring he was a part of the MCU
This video won my like at 21:50 😂😂😂 She is so real for tipping the secret to charm the masses (including myself) 👏 I couldn't agree more 😊
Personally I think bias and nostalgia is going really strong when criticizing Disney, that's just human nature, but when looking at everything objectively, it looks even worse! Disney is truly abandoning artistic integrity in favour of cold and calculated products that pander to the audience's nostalgia while removing all the soul out of everything in the process
Accurate AF!
Encanto was risky. It was a super different kind of story structure, that a lot of people ended up really liking
@@SlapstickGenius23 Encanto was risky. It was a super different kind of story structure, that a lot of people ended up really liking
No matter what, i still love disney. It gives me happiness during my childhood, and it remind me of my childhood.
Disney was better in the 2000-2010's
Tangled? Wreck It Ralph? Moana? ENCANTO??
@@DORAisD34DYep
Yes, free fastpasses should be the way to go. That, and don’t create a hostile work environment for the animation team.
Disney animation started flopping way before 2020, it was on a downhill track since right after Frozen
i’m a major disney fan but i completely agree. moana was the last decent release and was a decline from frozen by a lot imo. ppl mention encanto but that’s an outlier
Disney began flopping when they stopped making 2D films
Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Moana, and especially Encanto are all great
as someone with a disneyland pass who goes the parks pretty often, i really felt this bc the cast members have gotten so much more irritable. i don’t blame them, the pay isn’t great and the treatment of employees probably isn’t either… but why would u voluntarly work at disney if u have it and u could get a job u enjoy with better pay. like i’ve had multiple cast members get pissed at me for very rational and reasonable situations. ESPECIALLY ON RISE OF RESISTANCE, istg every person on the ride is so angry, like it’s not a character anymore they’re all just genuinely wishing death upon u.
BRING BACK ROMANCE IN DISNEY MOVIES !!!!!!
It ASTOUNDS me that Wish cost twice as much as Spiderverse to make and yet looks worse.
There’s no excuse at this point. If you want your own Spiderverse, you have to actually fucking put in the effort they did across the board with the writing and animation.
The animation was probably re-rendered with a fake 2D style after the fact once Disney saw how well those Spidey animated movies did.
spiderverse also treated their staff like shit so while im sure Disney wasn't perfect in that department i could see it being a factor
@@cartoonishidealism582 They're such fucking hypocrites. You can't just toss $200 million at a movie, lay everyone off and expect to get away with it.
I feel like the only person who loved Home on the Range. To this day i can't understand what's so bad about it.
Every Disney / kid movie is about someone that doesn’t fit in and being accepted at the end. Copy and paste
Mickey ears are now like 60 bucks... and cheaply made. I bought cute ones on etsy

i have the DVD of home on the range LMAO,, it's a silly movie, i cringe, but there's a lot of wild animations (ie more explosions than one would think would be in a movie where the protagonists are cows) so it's a good time when i watch it at least lol
