    Eric Lewis' career has circulated both in and out of what he calls "the jazz republic." Performing under his given name in the 1990s, he was a powerful up-and-coming pianist who toured in the bands of Wynton Marsalis and Elvin Jones. As his career progressed -- or failed to, from a business perspective -- he found that a lot of contemporary rock music also spoke to him deeply. So performing under the name ELEW, he devised a new theatrical, high-energy method of solo piano he called rockjazz, and his cover songs took him to TED Conferences, national tours, America's Got Talent, celebrity gatherings and the White House. But he never left the late-night straight-ahead jam sessions: In fact, he's just recorded And To The Republic, a return to the jazz trio format featuring some major players.

    I saw him with total ignorance of him, and was literally floored. Not just technical vCard talent but what he expressed. If I could play as well as him, I would have played every note he played that night. That's the sound. Someone else hears it too. Except he has the strength of character and raw talent to make it reality.

    This video is a revelation to me as to how great Reginald Veal is. I always had high degree of respect for him. But, I only heard him in the context of Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson. In context of the music of those two artist his playing was always smart and solid, but very tame (which was appropriate for the music). But in this context he is like a rabid dog killing a cat. Wow! I once read an interview with Christian McBride where he stated that he was thankful that Veal was not a part of the NY jazz scene because he would put a lot of bassists out of work. Now I see what he is talking about. He's a killer.

    I've never heard an artist admit to selling-out as openly as Eric Lewis has here. The way he puts it sort of makes you respect him. Normally I would diss him, but he's so honest you can't be mad at him.

    i.e why do you accuse him (one comment below) of being a "sellout" that is what folks said about Miles Davis. Now it's amazing to listen to the stuff that he did after he branched out!!!!!!

    seems to me to follow--Thelonious Monk broke the molds too, so why would a fellow who won that award just be conventional with Marsalis? He has found other paths, music has so many possibilities and if he loves what he does and folks like it, well why not? I am a classical pianist, that's where I have found my voice, for this fellow, why not find his? and gosh he has so much more talent!

    "If the jazz world isn't gonna mess with me then you know ... f'em" What the heck, this guy is not a true musician. He's so cocky and has no soul. All he wants is fame and fortune, why do you think he played so many chess games trying to get money. Jazz wasn't made to make money it was made for the feels.

    • @MalikEmmanuel
      @MalikEmmanuel 6 лет назад +24

      Nevan thebomb it hurt me to read your comment on this video. Not a true musician? You clearly have never seen or spoken to this man. I felt worst when you said that Jazz isn’t for money, as if being a (Jazz) musician precludes you from professional ambitions, from quality housing, from achieving comfort or even the ability to support one’s family. By the way, nobody gets rich playing chess in the park, I am asking that you show this man and his lifetime of dedication more respect.
