I disagree. He is a high level bluegrass player, and that is high praise. However, there have been hundreds of those who have come along. What makes Billy a star is that he is more than a guitar player. He is an artist. He has a few signature songs that he has written and they are catchy. He also has an infectious smile and loads of charisma. It's not enough to be a "pure guitar player" -- nope. In fact, he is not a particularly smooth player when he improvises -- for example, with Billy and the Kids on Dead songs. He was "fine" but not Garcia-esque (few are).

I wouldn't call that an experimental Rock phase more of just incorporating a better understanding of Americana and yes okay I find it fairly obvious but there's definitely grateful Dead Allman Brothers influences scattered throughout his playing and his body of work
