I wonder if the level up skill glitch is still there where speedrunners would get a star from a chest, kill some enemies change certain characters in the party and have them learn another character’s skills. Like for example: Getting Peach to learn Geno’s spells since Peach has the highest magic stat and she can be great for crowd control, but who needs that now that good attack timing now does splash damage.
@higgsbonbonIf so, this is the correct way to do it and not something like BDSP. That game feels like a spit take on DPP whereas this seems like they genuinely had a sense of direction
@higgsbonbonthe Land’s End trick isn’t a bug, really. Ironically, it's a self-roast that's going to become a self-fulfilling prophecy because Matt Mercer is replacing Steve Blum as the new voice actor for Vincent, so some dormant memory is inevitably going to unlock for Vinny from the one time he saw Advent Children nearly 20 years ago and it'll make him question whether or not he actually recognizes the new voice
I swear, every time Vinny plays a JRPG or an SNES game, he has to mention Chrono Trigger at least once, or he is not happy. And I don't blame him for that.

I love the Mario pantomiming and the gags of characters entering Mario, and of course the classic "fall face first in disbelief" as an equivalent to facepalm. If you've gone back to the house with the dolls Geno came from you'll get a really good scene that expresses this exactly. It's the first time I've played it in over 15 years. Welcome to the game, bud
Yeah, this and DKC3 were amongst some of the last great SNES games that released before the Nintendo 64 came along. And while DKC3 was "meh", Mario RPG is an all-time high-tier classic.
@@BareBandSubscription I don't think it comes close to the same quality as DKC2, definitely not in the soundtrack department, but then DKC3 didn't have David Wise to compose it, although it's still decent in it's own right. DKC3 just has a very different vibe, it's not bad, but I just like the DKC2 vibes better.
@@commandervile394 I agree on the OST being inferior (though I think it’s underrated nonetheless). I think people get too thrown off by the third one’s vibe not being terribly consistent with the previous game. Gameplay-wise, it’s really no worse than the others. Yeah, it’s got some weak gimmicky levels, but DKC2, for example, has so many vertical-scaling levels where you’re just climbing ropes or jumping up honey, which I don’t find half as fun or interesting as the traditional left-to-right stages, and the first game is so straight-forward and uninventive as a platformer that it actually starts to peter out for me before you even reach K Rool. I’ll also say that DKC3 has the best Kong duo in terms of utility, it’s generally more inventive, and the bossfights are much better than the prior entries. I also personally love the game’s unique vibe - the northern wilderness aesthetic and the soundtrack - but that’s just me, and it took awhile for me to come around to those aspects of the game. It has its flaws, but DKC3’s more negatively-tinged reputation is really unearned imo. All three OG Country games have their own strengths and weaknesses I find.
A tip:If you are used to playing the original, I would recommend setting Battle Controls to Type B. It makes it play exactly like how it was originally. Some of the descriptions for abilities say to press A, but pressing Y for them also works for those moments. I assume that it works that way regardless of which type you select.
21:37 - For anyone who's new to Mario RPG, I'll give some advice. Save one or two Flower Tabs for situations where your FP is low. They not only increase the max FP by 1, but they fully restore your FP as well. So you can use one right before a boss fight to essentially get a free heal. Also, the item limit has been completely reworked. Obviously it's higher in Breezy Mode, but even in Normal it works differently. It now goes on each individual item, instead of just having an inventory pool that is only two pages. Every item has a carry limit anywhere between 3 and 10, depending on the item. Anything beyond that automatically gets sent to storage. So go ahead and stock up on every grade of every item until you're maxed out on each of them, because you've now got the space for it all. This will be particularly useful once you meet a song composer.
I never got around to playing the original even though it was on my backlog for so long. When this got announced I decided I'd wait and play this instead. Started it last night and I've gotten to where Peach joins the party. I am loving how engaging and silly this game is. I haven't felt this way with an RPG since when I first played Earthbound over ten years ago.

I’m still surprised “Best Remake/Remaster” isn’t a category for The Game Awards given 2023’s wealth of options with Metroid Prime Remastered, Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe, Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp, and last but not least Super Mario RPG Remake. And the amount of upcoming remakes that have been revealed (and that are known to be coming in the future, shoutout TTYD), they should really add that as a category. Next year might be even more stacked. FF Rebirth, P3, Paper Mario, Another Code, and even Mario RPG would qualify. They really should consider it.

1:16:19 so the wording on them is weird. But basically it's a full fp restore that's only usable out of battle that also increases your max FP by the number indicated. At least from what I noticed in normal play, that happening isn't as likely to happen unless you go ham with SP moves.
Speaking of really good remakes, Star Ocean 2 remake is probably one of the best remakes I've ever played. It just is a better version of the original.
1:43:50 - So yeah, something about this version of the game. Not only do the enemies hit a little harder, but certain enemy types now have their own personalities. Enemies that are ghostly are more likely to attack healers or any character that uses their weakness. There's one enemy in Starry Hill that you encounter (the first area after you get Peach) that shows up as a Special Enemy, and he drops Peach in one hit. He routinely targets her, and goes first. So on my run through the place, she got dropped about 8 times. That's when I realized that certain enemies actively target certain characters. Also for the postgame bosses, you need to be really good at blocking attacks. In fact, there is one boss that you need to be able to do Perfect Guards in order to avoid a TPK from one of its attacks (unless you time a Red Essence for right before the attack goes off, but you'll run out before that boss is down).
Excited to play this once I actually finish the original Mario RPG. This looks so cool. Didn’t grow up with the original game but at least I grew up with rawest forest
1:38:55 - There was alot in the original Secret of Mana that was screwy, from the way cutscenes would start with characters just teleporting around the screen, to hit boxes randomly deciding not to work. And I know that people will bring up the fact that it was a game in the SNES era, but so was FFVI and that game not only came out around the same time, but was way more polished.
Either that frame stutter doesn't happen in handheld mode or something else weird is up cause I've played for about 6 hours now, 100% in handheld, and haven't had a single frame stutter
The section with the tadpole music... Because it goes from Fa to Mi, as opposed to Do to Ti, it is a Lydian scale. The different classical scales are: Ionian (Do to Ti) Dorian (Re to Do) Phrygian (Mi to Re) Lydian (Fa to Mi) Mixolydian (So to Fa) Aeolian (La to So) Locrian (Ti to La)
1:54:03 - So I'll just give you a heads up. You don't get anything for having a long chain of timed hits and blocks. I had one that was over 120, and nothing happens. No NPC mentions it or anything. It's still only for the Super Jump/Ultra Jump.
I've never played the original game, so this remake has been my first exposure to it. I'm loving it already, only 2 hours in and it's a lot of fun. I can see why people have such a fondness for this game.
Personally, I really like the little prompts for the timing. In the original, I just couldn't seem to get the timing consistent, and I had a hard time with it, so I like this MUCH better.
1:31:59 Not true, actually. Every time you use Jump, it gets slightly more powerful. If you use Jump regularly enough, then not only does it supercede all of Mario's future special moves, but it actually becomes, essentially, the most (consistent) damaging single-target move throughout the entire game, especially when you consider the fact that it only costs 2 FP EDIT: Ahh, fuck, chat beat me to it.
I have just recently finished it and it easily goes into my top remakes, some small changes to make the gameplay better, amazing visuals and soundtrack and some nice extra content, specially love the cutscenes.

"Does this game make anyone want marshmallows for some reason?"
It actually made me crave fried morel mushrooms when I was a kid
Cuz everything looks fluffy
I felt my bones crumble as Vinny said it has been 6-7 years since he last streamed it....I could have sworn it wasn't that long ago.
Hell when I first played it was shortly after it came out on the Wii’s virtual console in NA 🥲

i love the unhinged internal dialogue vinny gives mario

I swear, every time Vinny plays a JRPG or an SNES game, he has to mention Chrono Trigger at least once, or he is not happy.
And I don't blame him for that.

The old smrpg streams are my favorite Vinny streams and his voice over has been playing out in my head as I play the remake in real time and I can't turn it off. I am OK with this.
3:21:52 I love how Vinny made Mario salty over the being choosing Geno out of the four dolls.
3:22:12 and this part too HAHAHA.
I have played this game for the first time today and I can see why people have such a love for it
I love the Mario pantomiming and the gags of characters entering Mario, and of course the classic "fall face first in disbelief" as an equivalent to facepalm.
@@commandervile394
DKC3 isn’t even “meh”. It’s legitimately every bit as good or bad as the first two were.
@@commandervile394
I agree on the OST being inferior (though I think it’s underrated nonetheless).
Vinny's Toad impression turned into Elmo. I love it tbh!
A tip:If you are used to playing the original, I would recommend setting Battle Controls to Type B. It makes it play exactly like how it was originally. Some of the descriptions for abilities say to press A, but pressing Y for them also works for those moments. I assume that it works that way regardless of which type you select.
You won't just use a badge for the Final Final Test Vinny...
YOU'LL USE ALL OF THEM!

Man, some of you kids don't fully understand just how beloved this game was on internet back in the day. It's why Geno has been a such highly requested Smash Bros character for like 25 years. I remember stuff like Smash Kingdom which featured Geno in it during Brawl Speculation. It was part of those flash animations you’d see on RUclips during the 2000s as well as Brawl Taunts and Rawest Forest.
