A Most Peculiar New Flash from Godox : AD-S200

- Godox has expanded on the AD200 yet again, with the announcement of their fifth modular flash head design for the popular pocket strobe. This time, they have made the AD-S200, a flash head in the shape of a tube or wand, similar to the Godox TL30. This flash tube is compatible with the Godox AD200 and AD200 Pro. Currently the only accessory available is a snap-on reflector that turns the 360 degree flash tube into a 180 degree tube, with two barn doors that can be used to narrow the pattern of light even further. This new flash tube is still in preproduction, so details on pricing and release date are unavailable.

The Ad-200 is the more unique Godox product and the fact that they still support it through the years is really a pro move. I went from profoto to godox for this reason: profoto stop so many products for pro and focus on hobbyists.
I could see myself using this in my automotive photography and have some ideas for it
Great video! Are wireless tube strobes available? I need the power of a strobe but without the wires. Thx
Any idea when this will be available? I already have a few ideas on how I could use this where my current strobes have been limited
The number of times I’ve used my LED tube lights and thought… I wish this was a strobe are actually countless. This could sort of replace smaller strip boxes. You could do a Peter Hurly style head shot with a few of those. Geling them should be easy.
Looking forward to seeing your test shoot with it.
As a headshot photographer I immediately thought about Peter's triangle light; this new head seems a little short tbh, Rob didn't give measures but it looks like 30cm, or 40cm at best, while i find that for Peter's triangle a source of at least 60cm is needed to retain a soft effect without getting the fixture too close to the subject. To mimic the triangle I use a 90cm strip box with a COB led, and two led wands of 60cm, and the effect is pretty decent (see my profile pic).
This should work well in a Parabolic light modifier ! I would love to see this application with the Flashpoint 400 and 600 Explorer systems !
I'm sure I'm not the only one that thought of many applications of this thing in Real Estate photography! Keep us posted, please!
I bought two AD 600 pros and a V1 an AD 200 Pro. I think the AD-200 Pro is the most versatile flash I've ever bought in my life and now seeing you demonstrate this new attachment makes me think I wish I would have bought two of these AD-200s. Love your videos and your channel Thanks for sharing so much valuable information.
It’s very reminiscent of the Bowens extension head that was designed for the big 3000w power packs that we used 20+ years ago. It proved very useful for product photography.
Was that the Creo LS300 Light Stick? If so it's a rebadged Bacht penlight which Bacht still make.
@@tugwilson I think it might have been, the Creo badge seems to ring a bell 👍
Also similar to the Lucifero flash head from about 30 years ago and the Briese flashtube
Cool. Godox, just update the round head. It aged badly. The output is not on par with the fresnel head and the LED is useless. Same battery powers up a quite useful 12W LED in the AD300.
The end of your video speaking about the soft box idea… you read my mind! Please please please post results especially if you use it in a strip box. I use my ad200s as rim lights. I really want to see what the tube light may do. Thanks for this video!
''We have the solution, we just need the problem '' 😎
I just did a shoot with this wand for dresses and it looked really good. Not harsh in full sun
Decades ago, I had a Photogenic 200ws Hog Trough which had a four foot reflector with the long flash tube inside which was invaluable in my studio. This looks like a mini version and much more versatile! Looking forward to seeing it in action!
How dose it effect the ad200 flash duration? Stick are good because they output most light at fast duration.
Looks like they're trying to tap into the Briese brand of lighting style...
This prototype looks longer than the pictures on Adorama. Did they shorten the light in the final production?
Might be the perfect hair / separation light for photos. Kinda steep price to test it :D.
This shape would be perfect for the adjustable parabolic reflectors.
Wow. How very interesting! I SO love Godox and their creativity at a decent/affordable price. The AD200 is an AMAZING strobe and I am very happy to see more heads being made available so as to not HAVE to abandon the AD200 for another light that has that particular "head" when we can buy an attachment to do the same thing. About the flashing tube, I guess it would probably do very well in placed inside a softbox....except it would have to be without the inner reflector dish, right? They are generally close to the Bowens mount opening and that long flash tube might now fit?! Just thinking out loud and curious. Thanks for all of your videos.
You won't need the inside diffuser. The is no hot spot with this light.
I could see using as a hair light in places with low ceilings or as a rim light in small spaces
My thoughts exactly. 8 ft ceilings with a soft box isn’t doable unless the subject is seated.
How would this hold up for say interior / small room photography?
I want to put it inside a soft box and see the diference compared with a standard barebulb head.
Depending on the barn doors you may be able to use it for bodyscapes instead of carrying large strip boxes.
At $340 this head costs as much as an AD-200 Pro.
I got nervous when the new flash came out after an RGB wand. I thought they had created an RGB tube that could be used as a modeling light with flash capabilities. Nervous for my bank account that is.
I don't think I need this product. It is interesting though.
Yes! Please get a model and do an outdoor shoot where you need a light source/modifier that does not catch the wind (stable by itself on a light stand) yet you want a light source bigger (softer?) than just a bare bulb.
They should make a larger version for mounting inside of their parabolic reflectors, very similar long bulb shape similar to Brieses bulb design. Fingers crossed they make one that is larger with more output. Maybe for the AD 1200 Pro
exactly what I was thinking
who cares about the led tell us about the flash!
I use led wands a lot and obviously they can't keep up with stronger lights so I'm extremely interested in this.
A very expensive accessory!
I didn't understood your idea for usage in cars interior? If you would place it sowhere on the ceiling, then headrest (or upper parts of the seats in general) would be much brighter then lower parts.
Then don’t put it on the ceiling directly above the seat. Near the rear view mirror would light the seat far more evenly. That’s exactly what we do with Tube lights.
@@robhallphoto Thanks! I just couldn't visualize the photo, but now I get it :)
as always such a great review! was wondering if you could tell me what mount you were using in end of the video where you were mount the umbrella over the AD-S200. Looks like a Magshoe, but it says Glow on it so I am thinking Adorama.
Look up Brieese parabolic. I'd rather have it in a 400 to 800. But this could be awesome with the godox focusable parabolic if it can mound on the focus arm like Briese.
I’ve seen that before. Initially I ruled that idea out because, well there’s a focusing rod that gets in the way of mounting this to the Godox parabolic birdcage for Bowens. However, there’s no reason you couldn’t flip what I did in this video and put it inside any parabolic (although getting it truly centered may be difficult). Maybe they’ll release a solution. If that was an idea though I’d much rather see this in a 1200/2400 variant.
I think this would be great for parabolic umbrellas.
That would be amazing inside a china lantern or some other globe style modifier.
Name of the product?
Nothing formal yet!
nice, but would be even more useful with the electronics and battery integrated in the tube.
How does it talk to the camera?
It connects to an AD200, so the same way an AD200 talks to the camera, via any X series transmitter or speedlight.
I might get these for dance floor lighting, I think it would look cool in the background.
at least one example picture would have been handy
Broncolor had one too, very good for lighting tight places like inside cars, or small table top product photography.
Yes, it's virtually identical to the Broncolor litestick and quite similar to the Bacht penlight. However those are 3200Ws and 2000Ws lights. Prehaps Godox will make versions for the AD1200 and P2400.
The third thing I thought about this tube was as a tube inside a softbox
A Chinese lantern would be awesome
> damaged in transport
Does it come with a carrying case of sorts? This particular piece of equipment seems rather large and fragile based on the sound it was making.
Like I said it’s pre-production, so things like a production case weren’t prepared when they sent me it (often the case in the preproduction units I check out). Mine came in a foam shell, but I guess that wasn’t enough!
It looks like a wonderful addition to the flash options available to photographers.
Although I think it may have been more useful to have it connect directly to the AD200 and sell the extension lead separately.
Yeah there’s already the EC-200 extension, they could have just put a receiver on the end and sold it that way.
Thanks, Rob! Maybe for use with a China ball/lantern or space light?
Yeah either of those could be a great combination that offers a unique level of control in a soft overhead modifier!
Love this! What is it called. I definitely need one.
Just found out it’s going to be called the AD-S200
You missed the LED head for the AD200
That thing is sooooooo useless I think we can safely forget about its existence 😀
@@ritrattoaziendale a master of his craft never blames his tools
I happily forget the LED head exists, but regardless, 5 flash heads.
Got it. Rob didn’t forget it. He erased it from history the way it deserves.
Wish you show the shoot samples, spread of light, control etc too. Thanks
He said he will do it in a future video 🙂
I’m looking for the best tube light for on location weddings. Is this the best one?
This is super lame. Why didn’t they now just make this a stand alone light?
Do you have a link for it???
