I do think Skyen is underestimating the average audience member’s appetite for joke scenes where the characters are just the characters. The interrogation joke scene is one of my favorite in the show. I think a more corporate show would have just said ‘time to move on,’ but I think those longer moments where the characters get to show their personalities without drama or angst are an underutilized. Too often shows are in a hurry, and I do like watching Blitz and Moxxie square up against enemies verbally together. I totally see why you’d not like it, but I think letting a funny scene keep going is fine is the jokes land, and they all did for me.

    • @SuikoRyos

Fun fact: I got recommended (like a hundred times) by RUclips a compilation of Blitz and Moxie best moments. I knew about Helluva Boss but hadn't watched a single episode. Watched the damn video just so RUclips would stop recommending it.
Then came the interrogation scene. And when Moxie retorted with "I'm a Virgo", the only thought on my head was: "I *NEED* to watch this show". It was actually the dialogue between the characters what made me a Helluva Fan.

    • @cazminah
      @cazminah 6 месяцев назад +38

came here to say this - the assumption that “this is how things are done” “this scene is too long, should move on after establishing x” is so limiting. the reason I like this show is because it’s different to other shows and doesn’t follow the same rules, which makes it interesting.

    • @Auritilien

Same, I absolutely love the interrogation scene cause like in Ghibli movies you have to let the characters breathe and just be themselves. Here a lot is happening, but the plot is paused for the sake of fleshing out their shared sense of humour

      It also feels very believable.
Skyen is right that all of that wasn't necessary and they could have used those seconds to bring more depth and motivation to the characters but at the same time, at no point did I feel like the dialogue was written exclusively for the audience to the detriment of the characters or their credibility.
They are DHORKS! Of course they would threaten you constantly without actually having the guts to do anything extreme... or more accurately they would have it, given enough power but they are easily intimidated cause they are DHORKS!

One touch i really liked is that the big fight scene isn't just a massive action flex, like the matrix lobby scene. If that's all ot did, it'd be great.

Blitz in a hallucination is a pierrot clown, the sad clown that hides behind a mask.
Also, it's been kind of a joke so far in the series that Blitz can't spell but it seems that Blitz actually has very low literacy which definitely contributes to his inferiority complex vis a vis Moxxie.

The 3d camera move during Moxxie’s psychoscape does accomplish something- it flips the perspective from the side of Blitz where he’s wearing a mask to the side of Blitz that’s unmasked and vulnerable, just in time for the first real moment of connection in Moxxie’s psychoscape. Sure, they could have just cut to a different angle, but the soft drift creates a more organic transition, a sort of rounding of the corner in the conversation.
Also, Brandon Rogers voiced all the shades in Blitz’s psychoscape-his own voice is hurling insults at him from the mouths of other people.

    (No spoilers)
Also I think Blitz being chained by Stolas is symbolism of how people with fear of intimacy may view a relationship, something that you're stuck in, that will constrain you
he still goes towards Stolas and we can even see a little blush on him, because he does have some feelings for Stolas that he refused to admit, probably his fear of intimacy causing that
I can relate to that scene a little as someone with BPD who has a fear of intimacy, and craving it as well at the same time (and I think Blitz is very BPD-coded)

      .

With knowledge from the other episodes the principal theory the fans have is that Blitzo has a hate for himself and also a terrible fear of abandonment, Most of the time he pushes people away is in fear that they will do it to himself, he is crass and don't let people in, because he fears the pain of been abandoned.
He really wants what M&M have(one of the reasons he always spy on them), but he don't think he is capable or deserve to have it.
In his mind he Fuck&d up every relationship he had(not only romantic).
There's a lot of "clues" pointing to it in the episodes, but to name a clear one: the new Trailer
      ruclips.net/video/BZTI5OWypAg/видео.html
Blitzo: "I destroy everything, I make everyone's lives worse... I don't want to be this way, not forever."
In my opinion paradoxically, the only reason his relationship with Stolas "worked" until now, is because he could lie to himself and say it's just a transaction, If he had accepted that he really liked him, he would have fear of been abandoned, and push Stolas away.
Now that the characters already had some development, maybe he will be able to forgive himself and accept he can be loved.

What I noticed, jumping off his idea that the arts types show the characters' inner worlds, is that Moxie's is all Disney, all theater, consistent. Blitz, meanwhile, has a muddy world that he has clearly tried to adapt into something else, anything else, as shown with the characters he interacts with.
Moxie - Scribbles sometimes resolving into reality. Moxie is the only one present in the scene with him, so the real bits might just be that, but the scribbles show that he's still planning out how his world should look like with Moxie in it.
      Striker - Sepia-toned, western cowboy
Fizz - Black-and-white rubber hose cartoon, clowny
Verosika - dark purple and pink, like a darkened room in a club or concert.

While some think that the change in tone between situations is a problem, for me it is the best feature of this universe. I love the unpredictability of the episodes and the characters' actions and consequences, even though they have their ups and downs, it's never the same. One moment you're bouncing in your seat at the over-the-top, "unnecessary" action scenes, laughing nonchalantly at a predictable, stupid joke, and then out of nowhere you're hit in the stomach with revelations, insecurities, weaknesses and true emotions being shared....I consume a lot of all types of media possible and although Helluva Boss takes a lot of inspiration from them, it has a unique touch that really enchants me.

As you said, I think that's a breath of fresh air where everything needs to be as focus tested and palatable to the widest possible audience because corporations want to make the most money that they can off it. I really don't think EVERY person SHOULD like every minute of a show because that probably means they took no risks or stripped away a lot of personality to make it more widely liked.

I think what makes the Dhorks so good is that while the two leads definitely need more development, the organisation as a whole does its job. It poses a threat, because despite them getting dispatched in masses, they still have significant manpower and were able to capture the IMPs and force Stolas to intervene.
While also being charming, an organisation of wannabee office dhorks that like elaborate weapons, essentially composed of that guy from accouning that has a Katana/Model Train/etc collection that he is way too enthusastic about, the guys that use 1234 as their password.
As like a villainous org it has a lot of potential while being able to use a large variety of sitcom office stereotypes for joke fodder.

From this long and excellent fight scene we get little confirmations of what we already knew about how the imps like to fight, but also how they coordinate as a team with Blitzo working well back to back with Moxxie while Millie and Loona are more independent.
And you can kind of see that’s sort of how their personalities work, especially when Blitz is in the picture.
Returning to the start of what I was getting at, Monty’s hand on the reins was what got me to even try his new show, when you could tell he loved fighting spectacle and they would let him.
I enjoyed the flow and rhythm of every character and their fighting style, each one having choreography, movement, speeds, bursts, sequences and tactics that gave a little bit of insight into their personality and got to shine in spectacle because that’s what he wanted to do.
Just from watching the 4 trailers I could see “Ok this one loves rule of cool, she’s enthusiastic about the spectacle as much as the creator is and is likely been inspired by either a flashy childhood hero or an awesome mentor figure they want to emulate.” In a way the spectacle was telling in and of itself.
“The second is personally motivated by something this fight is like a flashback with something on the line, she likes to affect an air of refinement in person and in battle but finds more success when taking a more risky approach hinting that she’s constrained by this need to appear elegant or upper crust.”
All that foundation just from watching an indulgent fight sequence.
“The third I could tell that she’s a furtive person by nature but dedicated in action, a lot of her movements are based on crouches and rolls moving into sweeping strikes in flowing motions, lots of constant motion in posture from low to high (actually saw a lot of fighting game high-low mix up inspiration in that one.) Definitely has an Eastern/Anime/Ninja inspiration. She’s withdrawn and hiding something important but speaks with action.
“The last one is all brash aggression and confidence with just a bit of wild abandon. Even without this one having full dialogue you can tell just what she’s like by looking at her design and how she fights. It’s something of a stylised boxing technique so she’s likely been a bit of a wilder child who grew up roughhousing and took those skills further. She’s used to getting into and out of trouble with liberally applied force.”
I could map out a rough outline of their personalities just from watching them go early on because that indulgent fight choreography went on long enough to give me some consistency on how their designs and choreography informs their personalities.
And it was things like that which let you know where their personal problems lay when they had difficulty with an opponent.
Like when the blonde one’s full force head on approach didn’t work against a giant bird you could tell that she wasn’t quite leadership material because it was unsubtle and risked all or nothing on an opponent too hardly to tackle initially.
Or when the cat lady had problem against Mr Clockwork Orange you could identify that her trouble was going in alone against someone she didn’t fully understand. When she gets backup the fight quickly swings back around.
If done well, the spectacle has a way of telling or else reinforcing the narrative, character or plot if you look into the dynamics of when things are being consistent and when they aren’t.
Sadly the longer it went on, especially without Monty the individualism of their styles lost is dynamic quality and the fight scenes felt a lot shorter with a lot less to say.
This has been a bit of a rant so I’ll cut it off her in saying that I like seeing what people who are good at what they do make something they love.

Now that I see the fight scene frame by frame, I love how the characters shift and manage their weight during this sequence, particularly Loona and Millie.
When she first pull on the chain, Loona put her whole weight in the movement, to the point of having to balance her upper body with her leg, then rotate in order to catch herself with that same leg.
And Millie straight up threw herself by letting the weight of her axe pulling her in the air at some point.

I think the interagation scene works is that it's a genuine improvement of a scene from the Joss Weddon school. Basically the way that scene normally works is you have the good interview and the bad interview. The protagonist's strength is contrasted by one of the supporting character's weakness. In a difrent world Moxxie would crack but also give no usefull information. But in this version theyre presented as equals and have great synergy with eachother that's fun to see. It's like watching your favorite wrestlers not only team up but function as a amazing Tag Team too.

I really like what you said about cringe culture at the end. It’s something I’ve personally have been trying to unpack within myself recently, interestingly enough thanks to Helluva boss.
Despite considering myself to be the exact demographic for this show, there is a very sappy moment between a same-sex couple later on that I physically can’t watch because of cringe, where as a lot of people just think it’s cute. It’s wasn’t until I really thought about it that I was like “oh shit, that’s some internalized homophobia right there” , cuz honestly it’s no more “cringe” or sappy than the straight couples I’ve watched (in this show or others) without a problem. Yet when I watch it I can’t help but feel how it was growing up in a “I have no problem with gay people but I don’t want to see that shit cuz I find it gross” household, something that I didn’t really expect to sick with me as much as it did until I had this revelation.
Really sucks how watching a show like Heartstopper right now, one that would have meant so much to young bisexual me growing up, is one that I have difficulty sitting comfortably through despite having loved the comics. That despite getting joy in seeing such explicit queerness, there is still a part of me that feels like it’s too “in your face”, and how it might make some straight people uncomfortable despite me watching it completely alone in my bedroom. Still something I’m trying to deal with but I’m super grateful that we have so many more “in your face” queer shows like Helluva Boss nowadays that help normalize queerness. Not really something I thought Helluva Boss of all things would make me start to unpack but here we are lol

I love that Moxxie and Blitz both immediately apologize when the truth gas makes them say things that offend each other and they both end up crying. It really shows that for all their disagreements and all the insults Blitz normally gives him, they really are friends and care about each other and don't want to hurt each other's feelings.
I also love the voice acting after the truth gas wears off. The quietness and seriousness and sincerity of it all. You really feel the vulnerability of it. The way there's not much, I dunno, tone variation, just, the usual amount of expressiveness and of energy in how they talk is gone. It's like they're afraid how that might come off with everything still raw, and they're also kind of mentally and emotionally drained and tired and wiped out from it all, and just, they feel all exposed and vulnerable telling each other these things, so when they make the effort to speak -- and it is an effort -- they try to deal with all that by saying everything as matter-of-fact and without too much emotion as possible. It's really really good, I love it.

45:58 It's like Blitz is recognizing his past relationships (even as recently as Striker since he thinks they won't meet again) as dirty, and his relationship with Stolas seemingly being a clean slate (with the feathers landing on the mud of his dirty past and turning it to gold), up until he gets in his own way, believing that he's unloveable and that Stolas is in it solely for the power imbalance. So he's afraid to admit he likes Stolas. In return, Stolas disappears and the clean slate becomes a messy tornado.
