As a note: in Denmark where I live, it's not uncommon for kids to start drinking around age 13 (it's not _legal,_ but it's common), and parties like what Bee is throwing here are pretty normal social events for kids at like 15-18. Or, well, maybe not in a big fancy mansion with four floors and a DJ and a huge musical performance, certainly not at this level of glamor and wealth, but the level of drinking and partying happening? Yeah, that's a pretty normal amount of getting fucked up. So I instinctually read the average age at the party as a lot younger than they're probably supposed to be, given that it's an American production. To me this looks like a bunch of teenagers at a party thrown by someone who's in their early 20s, and that also influences how old I think Loona is supposed to be if she's partying with them. It also makes it even weirder to see Blitz making out with them.
Honestly, it's pretty common here too, depending on the circles you run in, big teen booze parties when somebody's parents are out are absolutely a thing. It probably doesn't help that Loona (especially in S1) frequently reads as somebody younger than she is because of her insecurity, defensiveness and lack of social knowledge.
They give context on her age range in a later episode. After that episode there are some lore youtube channels that reference both episodes to put them in context with each other. On a separate note I don’t think you are off the mark on saying it is probably an older party. It reminds me of a sophomore or junior college age crazy party rather than high school.
just a mini side note, she wants the name to be written kesha (without the $) to differentiate between now and the time she was living life doing drugs and very to the limit, she want to rehab and after a while went back to music being called just Kesha to make a point its different stages of her life (dotn wanna be the "akshually" guy but it seems its really important to her)
Kesha voices Beelzebub and wrote the lyrics to the song but unfortunately she can't sing because of copyright, that's why this episode took so long to come out. Rochelle Diamante sings the song and she did a great job and many think it's Kesha singing it
We think she did originally record the songs and maybe somewhere there is an actual file of her singing the songs, but then after they had to re-record them
Though Kesha IS the speaking/talking voice :) It's rather unfortune that she wasn't allowed to sing her own songs that she co-wrote. Yet Rochelle did an amzing job and I'm happy about it
By all accounts, Kesha really wanted to record the song, but was still in the tail end of lawsuit with the dumpsterfire, and the contract to the label that essentially owned her soul, and absolutely owned any music she recorded anywhere, for any reason.
I love how the fact she calls herself the "Queen Bee of Gluttony" just goes over his head, and he doesn't seem to realize she's the Sin of Gluttony. We got two Sin focused episodes, one after another. First Lust and now Gluttony. I wonder how he would have broken her character down if he was able to catch that Loona is talking to one of Hell's sovereign leaders. Also the fact she name-dropped Satan and Belphegor, the Sins of Wrath and Sloth, so casually also just flew over his head as well. Such a silly man ❤
Sometimes it makes me sad that it becomes analysis before consumption it kinda just feels like so much story is being lost. It kinda feels like he's doing a review before watching the show
40:20 when he says "temptation... the urge to go to far... hedonism..." while he watches all these hellhounds eating and drinking too much This part was super funny
@@TwoGems96 To be fair some people analyze and engage with art like that, he actually has a track record of catching up/understanding plotpoints and characters WAAAYY better than a lot of ppl who have seen it multiple times. This is mostly an issue with the way the show introduces Bee, no one mentions Beelzebub fully by name, which is extra funny keeping in mind Asmodeous also has a nickname but he is introduced as "Asmodeous the embodiment of Lust" before being called Ozzie. Moxxie calls her "Beelze" and in this ep she is called "Bee"
Agreed, the whole time he was questioning, I was going "Yep. Yes, they did. Mmmhm." Also, side note, Kesha doesn't use the dollar sign in her name anymore. It's just Kesha now.
I like how you think it must be a sound alike when Bee is talking, and then as soon as she starts singing you think it’s too good to be a sound alike, when Queen Bee’s speaking voice is by Kesha but her singing is by a sound alike
This is also a full circle moment for Vivian because (you wouldn't be able to find it on her main channel anymore, but it's still out there on RUclips) she actually made an animatic for one of Kesha's songs, specifically die young. It was really popular.
Fun fact: A lot of the more difficult shots of Bee, as well as a big part of the song were animated by the lead animator at Spindlehorse; Mel Mrozek She says that it's "some of her most favorite animation she's ever done" She is also responsible for a lot of animation of Angel dust from hazbin so good catch on that
One of the fun things is that "OZZIE'S" establishes Asmodeus, Sin of Lust, and gives some insight as to how he views the way his sin is supposed to work: it's not about emotional connection, it's about chasing after a rush or a thrill - often sexual in nature - with little heed paid towards collateral damage. There's some further elaboration in a later appearance (won't say how or when), but we also get to see that with Bee-Lzebub here: she's the Sin of Gluttony, but she sees the "correct" way to be a glutton as to engage in wonton hedonism for its own sake. That's why she picks up on Blitzo's vibes being rancid - he's not indulging to indulge, he's indulging to cope with some other problem. He's not truly enjoying himself while indulging, and that causes him to fail the vibe check.
Slight modification. Kesha herself wasn't the cause as much as her record label producers were. Kesha was totally on board, but stuck in legal drama that she could not avoid, so the episode got delayed until after (I think) episode 3 of season 2
So to give some context on this episode: This was made to be the finale of season 1 but only came out in the middle of season 2. Viv described it as a last visual bang and celebration of the animation team, a visual spectacle to show the talents of the animators. That is why Bee’s design is… like that. XD it is purposely complicated, this is THE “show off” episode. Now why was it delayed? Im sure you noticed Kesha is here 😅, I don’t know how much you know about her so Im going to give you the context: A while back in 2014 Kesha sued her producer Dr Luke alleging that he had sexually assulted and tormented her for a decade, then he counter sued for defamation. A lot of things happened but unfortunately the judge didn’t believe her and didn’t agree to her terms of ending her contract so she stayed under her label, which was owned by Dr Luke, this meant that she was under his control for years. Around the time Helluva Boss was being produced the case was still going on, and while Kesha voiced for Bee her label didn’t allow it to be released because they controlled everything that had her name. This is why the delay happened. In June 2023 there was finally a settlement and 1 day later the episode was released. And now just some insight on Viv’s relationship with Kesha. Viv loves Kesha and she has been doing animated music videos of Kesha songs since like 2013, her older art related to Kesha always included a bunch of furry characters. Viv’s animated MV for Die Young had been her most viewed video for a WHILE before Hazbin came out. So having Kesha voice a character in your show, have her write an original song for you AND be a furry is just the biggest full circle moment for Viv’s career.
idk why there's this impression that this episode could be slotted anywhere into the series timeline - blitz is clearly wearing the same outfit from his date with stolas, and in that same episode we see him find loona's note about the party. it very clearly happens the same night.
So one thing this breakdown made me realize is the fact that, while Queen Bee can change her size, whenever she's talking to Loona, aside from that one outburst, she's always standing at Loona's level. The only ones she towers over are the demons who are naturally very small, with the other exception of when she takes on Blitz's challenge and gets larger to basically make a stand.
Also, if no one has said it yet, all the sins are supposed to represent different circus acts. Asmodeus is a magician i believe and Bealzabub is the animal acts; she even jumps through hoops during thr song.
Skyen be like: Hmm, Queen Bee reminds me of temptation, hedonism, the urge to take things too far and she's "what you want, not what you need"......I wonder what she represents narratively? Man, if only there was some kind of in universe reason for a being in Hell to embody all of these things. Maybe if there was some kind of biblical umbrella term for it that they could name drop within the episode. Man, she certainly seems to be very casual with some of the deadly sins, I wonder what that's about.
Queen Bee (or Beezebub, the Embodiment of Gluttony) is honestly the epitome of the Vivziepop maximalist design principle. I think it was during one of your Hazbin reactions that you mentioned her design being maximalist. I think that this is THE most.
Ikr? Like the design is very on the cusp of being too much, but it literally just ends up being perfect for the character and the embodiment of gluttony as a whole
One interesting thematic detail in this episode is that Tex and Bee's relationship is contrasted with Blitz and Stolas's in the previous one. They're both examples of relationships between a low-class hellborn and demon royalty, but one is obviously much healthier than the other.
@@captainChernihivGluttony is all about over-indulgence so Bee can get away with "indulging" in whatever relationship she wants has always been my interpretation of it
@@captainChernihiv Assuming you're referring to people we saw last episode: Lust sees actual "love" as ruining the vibe of the sin. Someone espousing the ideals of Lust would be admired for having illicit explicit fun, but be considered a downer for showing actual caring loving feelings (and if that person got on others' cases about it before, it's not unfair to consider them somewhat of a hypocrite)
@@captainChernihivBee and Tex aren't a scandal because they have never tried to hide their feelings. When Bee said "Bel says I'm a total jackass for trying, but I'm proud of being a jackass", that's a huge tell on her character. She is untouchable because she's fully honest and if someone thinks less of her for it then that's their problem, not hers.
@@captainChernihiv I think part of it is that Bee is of even higher status that Stolas. Enough that she doesn't need to worry about these things. Bee is at a level where only the other Sins can be a threat to her, and she doesn't care about their opinion (except maybe Lucifer who from what we've seen wouldn't care). She doesn't depend on the any of the other demon hierarchy for her power, and her reputation is based in her being with the lower level demons like hellhounds and imps.
I was so ready for Queen Bee to be a villain and controlling everyone, but actually she's just a high energy extrovert. She's exactly what she puts on the surface.
There a funny element that they seem to imply in her dialogue that litteraly does the thing where she is harvesting the people indulgence for her own benefit (make me that honey) but instead of being framed as an evil scheme, this is just a normal thing to the people of hell. Could even say that this is just how she get paid for her act.
@@blackbloom8552 I think that's a good way to put it. Like how bees harvest pollen - many plants *need* bees to do that. Beelzebub's got a big ole mixer to collect pollen and give everyone a great time, it's a mutualism thing.
Can we acknowledge the genius of *BEE*LZEBUL who represents one of the 7 cardinal sins, that being gluttony, being a bee which matches the name but also HONEY and a party host cuz of course that's where people are most gluttonous?
Unlike the Bible version of Beelzebub, though; Bee draws the line in going too far with indulging one's self (as seen with how she reacts to Blitz's behavior)
@@SilverScribe85 I think Bee's point there was that he wasn't indulging himself he was drowning his sorrows sort of distinction. Not that I think this would stop the Biblical sin of Gluttony but still.
@@gokbay3057 I mainly bring up the differences between versions due to an aspect about Asmodeus/Oz. According to HIM, lust isn't a sin unless it's "consensual"
@@SilverScribe85 I mean, something I have read/heard multiple times is "R*pe isn't about sex, it is about power". Asmodeus (in Helluva at least) seems to believe something like that as well. So for true lust to be involved it has to be consensual.
Oh the irony that this episode actually HAS subtitles on youtube and now Skyen is struggeling to understand the mean girl without them Also fun fact: Striker's hellfire horse in ep 5 was sort of an animation test for Bee with the effect mane and the lava (lamp) body to see if they could pull off our Queen of Gluttony!
nope she discovered the fan animatic viv made for die young waaaaaay back when and it's suspected they have actually been in light contact since, viv is AMAZING at networking and would never let a catch like kesha just find something of hers and then let her go without striking up a way to contact
It should be noted that beelzebubs signature is on Luna's adoption papers meaning party girl there ran the orphanage that Luna was trapped in till Blitz came and got her out.
Just fyi they do not get any ad revenue from the show. While part of the show is funded by the Patreon, most revenue comes from merch sales. They consistently put out and advertise new merch with a separate video usually before/after an episode drops or during a special holiday (e.g. Valentine's day or Christmas)
I found it amusing that Skyen never actively confirmed or mentioning the fact that Bee is Beezlebub. You know, one of the 7 deadly sins, on the same level of authority as Azmodeus and essentially collegue to Lucifer. And discussed on that aspect in her design and concept. But I think one of the main reasons for Kesha is here, is because it is partially a reference to Vivs first animation, where she animated a wolf character to "Dying young" or whatever that Kesha song is called. (I thhink that was the main reason)
You pretty much got it. She introduces herself at the beginning of the song as 'The Queen Bee of Gluttony'. So much like Asmodeus/Ozzy is the Ruler of the Lust ring, Beelzebub is the ruler of the Gluttony ring. And you can see her encouraging all forms of excess. (I'm what you want, not what you need.)
Someone has probably already talked about this, but the first segment of the episode and the latter half of the episode are connected by Loona feeling _secure_ with Blitz. She goes to the party on Tex's invite, she's welcomed in by Tex, she stays glued to Tex, until Bee shows up and creates, in Loona's mind, a wedge between her and her lifeline. She feels alone, and she goes to leave, but instead of calling a taxi, who does she call? Her dad, because she doesn't _want_ to feel alone. And when Blitz gets there and people start recognizing him, he becomes her lifeline, so if anything happens, she knows she's safe- not in the sense that he'll go beat someone up for her [but he will], but she _knows who she is with him._ Blitz's presence is why Loona was able to have a good time and make friends in the first place. If she wasn't grateful for that, she wouldn't have taken care of him when he went too far. They are both two profoundly lonely characters finding companionship and love in each other.
I love that this show doesn't just show the sin of gluttony as food related but rather as all out indulgence in pleasure, be that food, drink, drugs, or sex. Just doing what you want and being true to yourself.
What's interesting is that it's healthy, which IMO is a reflection of the creators. The background artist, Sam, who does a lot of the planning, too, grew up in a situation where her Christian family said she was going to Hell for being gay, so she kinda embraced that as part of her identity.
@@Springy05basically a pop star who when she was in her early days signed a pretty bad contract that made it so that her singing voice is basically owned by the music label
Lots of people have already shared the trivia about how it was Kesha's ongoing legal battle at the time that caused the episode's long delay, so instead I want to share a bit of my own slightly differentiating interpretation of the conflict Blitz brings in the second half of the episode. You mention how children shouldn't need to take care of their parents (and it's true) and how Blitz basically ruins things for Loona right as she's finally loosening up and getting into the party, and how maybe him crashing the party should have been a separate episode. I don't necessarily agree though, and part of it is because Blitz making an ass of himself at the party is kind of Loona's fault. She is at least partially responsible for his behaviour. She's the one who calls him to the party because she wants to leave, only to change her mind and drag him inside. She then proceeded to encourage Blitz to get fucked up, cheering him on first as he did a kegstand, and then encouraging him to absolutely destroy himself in the drinking contest with Bee (even cheering him on and calling him Dad while doing so, something we've seen really gets him excited and happy in episode 3 when she almost called him dad there). When she was talking Blitz into staying too, one of the things she says to encourage him is that people seem to know him, and the impression I got was that Loona was specifically using Blitz's seemingly positive reputation with the other party goes to ingratiate herself with them and that's HOW she was starting to get in with them socially. All taken together, Loona bears, again not all of it, but a not insignificant portion of the responsibility for Blitz bringing the party down, which I think we can see she knows in the way that, while she's certainly irritated about it, she's noticeably less antagonistic towards him than usual while extricating him from the party. Certainly less antagonistic towards him than we would expect if he'd just ruined her night, because even as he forced her to leave early under less than great terms, he's also the one who gave her the positive moments of the night as well. This also plays into her confrontation with Bee when Bee tells her she needs to check on her dad, because Loona gets pissed off, telling Bee she doesn't know Blitz as well as Loona does... except in that moment, she DOES know better than Loona. Bee's the one recognizing Blitz is out of control, while Loona, who SHOULD know him better, is unable to recognize that he's more of a mess than usual, which in turn plays into her insecurity towards and jealousy of Bee being so much more comfortable being social and socially aware that Bee isn't JUST the life of the party but is spotting things Loona should be able to spot herself but just doesn't want to because she's currently benefitting from it. Anyways, a bit of a ramble, but just my reading of the dynamics I wanted to get out there.
Yeah, as an introvert myself im pretty fammiliar with the behavior where you leech onto one of your more sociable friend/family member to get yourself included. I guess Skyen didn't do this as much as others have so he didn't pick up that this was what Loona was doing.
I rewatched Season 2 and two things stood out: 1. The animation quality in every single episode is ridiculous. 2. It deconstructs so many things in season 1 that we just kind of took for granted
the kesha cameo was actually huge for the creator, if you look up her early videos she has a "die young" music video that you can see reflected a little in this one
Just in case you're unaware, the demon's typically associated with the seven deadly sins are: - Lucifer: pride. - Mammon: greed. - Asmodeus: lust. - Leviathan: envy. - Beelzebub: gluttony. - Satan: wrath. - Belphegor: sloth.
I don't think you need to tell him this. Like, I know it's a standard part of the "things to comment on Helluva Boss reaction videos" package, but there really isn't any need for it.
Loona wants acceptance and Blitz arrives to show her that he accepts her uncondiionally, and shows how to get along with people while being yourself. She does make friends, but realizes Blitz needs her help the way she needed his. Bee is just meant to be a benchmark to compare Loona to, and be somebody who we genuinely like as Tex's partner. And obviously to be a visual spectacle that showcases the animators skills!
i do not want to be one of those pressuring superfans who fail to see creators as human beings with their own personal lives- i am merely expressing my adoration for your content on the hellaverse and arcane as well. i am beyond excited for any upcoming videos in regards to either of them and am buzzing to hear more of your thoughts! stay healthy, lots of love!
Yeah, it's kind of why I don't have much sympathy for Loona because it's basically implied she came to screw up Tex's relationship, perhaps threatening his girlfriend then got sad when it was a bulletproof romance. At best she came to see the competition to see if she could interfere or get Tex to cheat or something.
The one shot with the thick outlines has some of the best Luna face animation in the episode, the shift in outlines is jarring but its just as high quality as the rest.
I agree they definitely could've taken more time setting up Loona having fun and bonding especially with Tex and Bee (and the guy she went back in because of) before the confrontation about Blitz, but I think that misses the implication, she gets more comfortable initially BECAUSE Blitz is there; because she has someone she loves and trusts, because she can say "YEAH, I'M WITH HIM, HE'S WITH ME" and that makes her more comfortable in the crowd and being herself, and helps other people connect with her more easily since they have something to go off of, a way to start the conversation. Loona is so hesitant to accept something might be wrong with Blitz not just because it interrupts her good time, but also because it's had such a positive effect for her, and she doesn't wanna grapple with the possibility Blitz isn't actually having as good of a time as she is and she just ditched him to hang out with other people. (That's reading into it with a bit of liberty, but it's clearly a "He's my dad, I would know if he wasn't okay, I know he can handle anything how dare you suggest otherwise" kinda insecurity if nothing else.) You could definitely keep that vibe while giving Loona more focus and independent development though. Just a though they could've have a shot of Loona's pride falling to looking sheepish again once Blitz is hauled off since she'd been hanging out with and around him until then, and then have Bee and Tex swoop her up, using her affection as a metaphorical security blanket to manage her mood and get her to talk to more people. And then they could've prompted the confrontation by one of the duo noticing something wrong from across the party, or coming back from going to check on things, have it be like a "Ooookay, we didn't wanna put this on you, but this is getting bad" kinda thing, to show they didn't jump on it the moment it was an inconvenience for them, they were willing to put Loona's enjoyment over Blitz's well being to a certain point. Which could've been another fun thing to play with: Loona maybe being bothered they noticed something wrong with her DAD and didn't tell her, hurting the good will they've built, which would make sense as something Tex wouldn't think Loona would have an issue with given what he saw of their relationship in 1x03 Spring Broken.
1:26:30 One thing to note, it seems like Blitz sleeps on the couch even on the regular (not just this day being particularly bad) and that room Loona has is probably the only bedroom in the apartment.
Ok I've recently been qued into the reading of how Imps horns correlate to sex (thick white stripes=male, thin white stripes=female) and how you can compare that to an imps gender presentation to read them as trans. And what I love about the characters, even the side ones like the friend of Blitz's who comes up to his car, is that they read as trans to me outside of that que. Like I look at Blitz's old friend and think, "oh hey, you're enjoying top surgery and being on t for a few years. Happy for you man"
0:55 Reminds me of that shameful night where i stayed awake until 8am because i was reading BL and just didn’t want to stop until i had caught up on all the chapters…
an interesting bit of loona's character is that she's actually not a teenager, she's around 22 but clearly she's incredibly socially stunted and her teenager-like behavior really shows that she's spent significant chunks of her life without much healthy socialization. you could say both her and blitz are emotionally stunted
Yeah, I think he was reeling too hard from realizing who the voice belongs to But I am surprised he didn't even acknowledge the giant Baelzebun sigil she's dancing in front on at one point
One thing I love about this show is how we're getting different portrayals of the Sins: Queen Bee is the sin of Gluttony but instead of just being about eating too much her theme is "over indulgence". Hence why she's all about partying, drinking, drugs and sweets (thus the honey connection which also works as a bit of irony since bees are known for being hard workers, bit of a "work hard play hard" kinda thing). Bee just wants everyone to let their hair down and enjoy themselves, indulge in party and pleasure. Its why her song has the line "I'm what you want, not what you need" because Gluttony is all about having too much of what you want to an unhealthy degree.
It's funny how the episode always ends, and I exit fullscreen by instinct thinking the video will be over now, just to see there's at least another half hour left. Love ur commentary
When the Hazbin Hotel pilot first dropped one of the criticisms coming from a lot of reviewers more familiar with the animation industry was that Viv's character designs were too busy. Too complex. And that doing all the necessary animation to deal with those characters were too demanding. Viv said hold my Beezeljuice. You can see though that in the Hazbin series she did tighten the character design up and simplified some of the backgrounds. But still compared to other standard shows she pushed things. But in Helluva Boss its more like her playground. Or maybe better put where she and her team are allowed to explore and see what they can do and what works. I wish she could be as ambitious with Hazbin. But there she is constrained by budgets and teams that require more preplanning than what they do in Helluva Boss. Each episode in Helluva is a statement of what can we do next? That doesn't work when you are dealing with corporations that need to know what is expected of them for a season of work. Though I suspect the success that Hazbin Hotel had on Prime may cause the rules to loosen up for the second season. So we may see a bit more lush setting and more episodes. But in the meantime Helluva Boss is just going to keep pushing everything it can.
Idk about anyone else but I personally like Monster’s Ball (the song that plays over the credits) more than Cotton Candy. It’s less repetitive, I feel like it had a good build up and even name drops Queen Bee’s actually name Beelzebub. Since everyone in this episode including herself just call her Queen bee. I feel like some people could miss the fact that she’s a deadly sin and not just some special hell hound
Some unspoken things in this episode. Kesha was voicing Beelzebub. Prime Sin of Gluttony. She is one of the Lords of Hell. She is the ruler of the Gluttony Ring. Hellhounds are tied with imps for being the bottom rung of Hell. Tex is a Hellhound dating the Prime Sin and ruler of one of the Rings of Hell. Compare this with Blitz and Stolas. A lot of the tension is the difference in social status. This is an interesting declaration from Viv. The Queen of Gluttony doesn't give a wet slap about what people think.
It's less patreon and more merch. They push seasonal merch that is absolutely adorable. Like they have merch people like. They have Stolas's grimour as a notebook it's great.
1:30:04 Afaik the amount Spindlehorse pays for hour is public and also is above average for the industry standard! I remember this bc a couple months ago there was a controversy relating to a different animated project, and recipes of how Spindlehorse works were shown. They just make a lot from the merch, the fans are very supportive and dedicated.
IIRC this is also where it came out the Spindlehorse tries to operate by asking the animators how much time they can give and dividing up the production based on that. This can lead to animators over offering and incentivizes them pushing themselves into stressful situation, because it's a chance to get more money, but it's a more ethical principle to start from.
as far as i've seen spindle pays DOUBLE the average industry rate for the inhouse projects like helluva and average industry rate for outhouse projects like (weirdly enough) hazbin
Reaction video?! Reaction video?!?!?! Good sir, these videos provide the same mental stimulation of sneaking into an animation college lecture and listening to the teacher go into an hour long delve into a frame by frame analysis. ...or atleast it feels like it. And I enjoy it. Thank you for the brain candy.
Only now do you understand why people got super hyped for Hazbin Hotel because this episode came out before Hazbin did. Think about how Helluva Boss's trajectory in terms of animation and characters was currently going, then think about the high concept of Hazbin Hotel. That's how it got so big and out there with expectations. I love Hazbin Hotel, but I adore Helluva Boss 10x more. They had more time and seemingly more effort for this show than the other one.
"the architecture looks like Heaven, where is this?" Honestly, interesting observation. Lucifer is the only character that we know for sure is a fallen angel - what the sins were doing before they became sins isn't made clear yet. *If* it turns out that they too are fallen angels that would explain the "Heaven but Decadent" aesthetic in Gluttony.
God, I really hope that theory is true. It just genuinely would add some really interesting story potential. Also, in my opinion, it just makes the most sense from what we know of the sins so far haha
It was always supposed to come after episode 7 as a season ending celebratory episode. Originally ep 7 was called finale pt 1 and this was pt 2 (this is the party Loona alluded to going to in her note) but they changed the titles because it was taking so long with the legal stuff to actually air it. Also, Blitzo answering Loona's call was to show us that no matter what bs he's dealing with, he'll do his best to be there for his daughter.
Trivia time! Kesha voices Beelzebub, but only when she SPEAKS. When she sings its Rochelle Diamante. We are not sure why its that, but theory goes like this: this episode was in production hell, because Keshas record had problem with her singing in this episode, so it was changed to Rochelle instead. I dont know specifics, but Kesha's contract was really bad, and producers had a lot of power over Kesha.
35:25 sorry for the "but actually", but actually dogs are omnivores, not obligated carnivores, however they are more "adapted" for the consumption of meat, so it's still not a good idea to give them cake. Cats on the other hand, 100% carnivores
Oh yeah, cats are obligate carnivores but funnily enough, can totally eat and benefit from eating some non-meat items. And I don't mean having it forced on them ofc, I mean them actively seeking it out and seeing good effects from it. For example: squash, corn and broccoli. It's not bad for them and some veggies can actually help, like squash, when they're constipated. Of course you wouldn't want to give them a lot of veggies since some of these are very calorie-dense and cats can easily gain weight from that and bloat from too many carbs, but it's still good for them as an addition to their base diet. I have three cats and all of them are crazy for squash and one adores broccoli. All the vets I've consulted say it's perfectly fine for them to eat safe veggies sometimes. (Cuz ofc there are unsafe veggies and I always make sure to know which are which). All the cats I've had in my life (many) have had at least one non-meat item they absolutely loved. And as long as it's a net positive, I let them have it sometimes. Another thing to keep in mind is that some cats aren't good at staying hydrated, and some veggies can be pretty watery and help with hydration too. Just like wet food and meat.
Oh boy i have been waiting for this. Now we just need 2Bskyen to post a break down of the designs of the deadly sins. Also fun fact, while kesha is in the episode, she is not singing the song(because legal reasons) and finally Vivziepops youtube career kinda got kicked off by an animation she did to a kesha song, so this has probably been a tick off the old bucket list for her.
"Children should not have to take care of their parents" in the context of this ep where the issue if the child's parent has been drinking hit a special nerve there tbh
"Hey Loona if you wanna make friends maybe you shouldn't growl at people when they get close to you" HAHAHAHAAHAhaha ah ha... ha... haaaaa. Yeah you'll find out in Season 2 that Loona has her reasons for being so aggressive and protective of her personal boundaries...
Ironic that the gluttony episode is the one that Skyen restrains himself on. Good job keeping it under 2 hours, I know that must've taken a lot of discipline.
Oh I remember the absolute shit festl of jealousy people showed when this episode aired and schmucks didn't want to admit that the animators pulled off Beelzebub to the degree they did. "Oh she is so overdesigned, the poor animators, abd bad Vizie for making another overcomplicated character". In reality they just didn't want to admit that Vizie and her team simply managed to animate madness levels of complexity to utmost perfection and simple, pure joy.
20:44 right, so this episode came out 2 days after she was officially released from that contract, in case you were wondering about the copyright thing 😂
i found helluva boss through twitter when this episode came out because people kept posting about it on my tl being very, very angry but i was watching all the clips and thinking the animation looks sweet, so i started watching the series
Lol, that's amazing. Do you remember what they were angry about? I've never been active on twitter, but I've heard third hand that some people were complaining that Bee wasn't fat enough or insectoid enough, which seems kinda silly to me. It's not as if Viv's take on demonology bastardized any characters worse than what Marvel did to Norse mythology.
@@helenanilsson5666 Oh I was there when this happened. 90% of it was that Bee doesn't look like the depictions of Beelzebub in demonology or that she is a sparkledog, which I've always found dumb. Idk what has happened lately culture-wise that has turned people so angry at the idea of creators having a different take from their inspirations. Rn some twitter weebs are having a hissy fit over Hades 2 because some of the characters don't "look greek" or "are too different from their greek mythology roots". Twitter is a miserable place is a good TLDR.
the breed Luna is based of i.e. husky/wolfdog are super high-strung and energetic and because hellhounds are a show of "wealth" and such she was probably taken/adopted way too early the first "few" time's and was not raised/trained well as she has no social skills with the other hounds or imps for that matter the reason she is doing better is she now has ways spends her excess energy and someone who actually care's for her and gives her the attention she needs
Part of the reason loona was apathetic in the first episodes is clearly cause she’s working and, well, she’s the receptionist at the desk for a reason, blitz is overprotective of her and doesn’t want her to be in danger by joining in on the murdering. We haven’t seen her stuck at the desk for a while but we’ve also seen her participating in with the rest of the group, so I hope she’s a bit more enthusiastic about it now! Enthusiastic about being stuck at the desk while everyone else has fun murdering- actually that might be an oxymoron hold on-
Because my normal account is blocked, I made a second one to say that Kesha agreed to make a song for the show because she really liked the "die young" animation. She wrote the song and wanted to perform it. But her producer blocked that simply to be an a**hole. Spindlehorse remade the song with a soundalike but that wasn't enough. Until the lawsuit between Kesha and her producer was done they couldn't release the episode without the high risk to be sued. So you can say it is Kesha and it is not. All the dubs are her, she wrote the song but didn't perform the one showed in the episode.
35:31 fun fact: one of the key defining characteristics of dogs compared to wolves that isn’t a visible trait, is that while domesticating, they had a duplication event occur to the genes that control what they can digest, and more specifically it duplicated the genes that allowed them to eat a larger quantity of carbohydrates, as compared to wolves.
You will learn why Loona feels such animosity to Bee and is so awkward in social settings very soon…. Actually by my count you have already watched episode 2 of season 2, so you already know!
20:30 that legal battle with that producer is actually the reason this episode took so long to come out. Kesha was at the time, in the middle of that legal battle, and since she wrote the lyrics to Bee's song (Cotton Candy), the episode couldn't be aired until the lawsuit/conflict was resolved. Also in case you didn't know, this episode was like. a big victory lap for Viv, since the first time she went viral online it was thanks to a fan animation that she did set to Die Young by Kesha. Also also, other's have pointed it out already but you didn't catch that Bee is Beelzebub, aka the Sin of Gluttony.
1:43 the delay was due to a legal situation due to Kesha and her previous record label having been in a lawsuit against each other at the time, and when the suit was settled the episode was able to come out
I wonder when he's gonna stop thinking of Loona as a teenager? She's 22 Like her age isn't really mentioned in the show itself but I feel like it's at least hinted at that she isn't a teenager
We find out in episode 4 of season 2. Not directly, but that's when we find out how long ago Blitz adopted her, add that to "almost 18" and we get her current age.
I actually like the story in this episode. Let me try to explain really quick As an introvert myself I do want to socialize, but I tend to overthink and become ackward and then uncomfortable and then want to leave cuz I don't feel like I belong. However if I have even 1 friend around I can retreat to in case I don't feel comfortable anymore, I suddenly feel more comfortable in any social situation. And I feel like that's what happened to Luna when Blitz came. She got the courage to give it another try and let people in, because she knew that if things go south, she has him there And I love that she also reciprocates the feeling. Yes, it could have been a more tragic episode of Luna finding her way on her own and then having to sacrifice that for Blitz, but realistically I don't think she would have seen hot guy nr. 2 as aprochable before Blitz showed up, rather as a sleezy guy trying to hit on her, because at that point she didn't have anyone to have her back. The story of the episodes makes it so by the end Luna learns to be more social, but she also gets closer to Blitz, thus showing that even if she doesn't always take him serious, when push comes to shove, she'll also be in his corner. I really prefer it the way it is
Same I think the writers wanted to show how similar Loona is to Blitz and how devoted a father he is to her despite his problems and how she will also help him because she cares for him. 😊
What if the song "I'm what You want, not what you need" means for Loona that Beelzebub is the way that Loona wants to be but not the way that she needs to have friends or to be happy. But who knows, maybe it's not :)
Culture shock averted then.
They give context on her age range in a later episode. After that episode there are some lore youtube channels that reference both episodes to put them in context with each other. On a separate note I don’t think you are off the mark on saying it is probably an older party. It reminds me of a sophomore or junior college age crazy party rather than high school.
It think it was recently confirmed that Loona’s age is supposed around 22. A lot of people thought she was a little younger than that before as well
Oof, that must have made this weird, especially before you realized this is through an American perspective
The conflict he has between "Is that Ke$ha or a sound alike?" Is funny cause it is both Ke$ha AND a soundalike.
Extra funny because he commits on her being Ke$ha during the song, which is by the soundalike (while Ke$ha does the speaking parts).
@@gokbay3057 Yeah, it is pretty funny. Side note, Kesha dropped the $ part of her name after she got out of rehab, it's just Kesha now.
@@PlanetEarth1369good for her
just a mini side note, she wants the name to be written kesha (without the $) to differentiate between now and the time she was living life doing drugs and very to the limit, she want to rehab and after a while went back to music being called just Kesha to make a point its different stages of her life (dotn wanna be the "akshually" guy but it seems its really important to her)
Kesha voices Beelzebub and wrote the lyrics to the song but unfortunately she can't sing because of copyright, that's why this episode took so long to come out. Rochelle Diamante sings the song and she did a great job and many think it's Kesha singing it
I noticed that someone else was the singing voice and I was wondering why that was. I mean it’s not like Kesha can’t sing.
We think she did originally record the songs and maybe somewhere there is an actual file of her singing the songs, but then after they had to re-record them
Though Kesha IS the speaking/talking voice :) It's rather unfortune that she wasn't allowed to sing her own songs that she co-wrote. Yet Rochelle did an amzing job and I'm happy about it
That is a killer sing-alike! Very cool tidbit.
Such a silly man ❤
Kinda frustrated me ngl, that was what I expected the most from this episode😭
But it’s ok ! He might talk about it after reading the comments !

I like how you think it must be a sound alike when Bee is talking, and then as soon as she starts singing you think it’s too good to be a sound alike, when Queen Bee’s speaking voice is by Kesha but her singing is by a sound alike
Yeah that irony is hilarious.
It does help that the lyrics were written by kesha, so it really sounds like her

This is also a full circle moment for Vivian because (you wouldn't be able to find it on her main channel anymore, but it's still out there on RUclips) she actually made an animatic for one of Kesha's songs, specifically die young. It was really popular.
It also ironically got stuck in a bramble patch of copyright claims.
It was her breakout animation, from what I remember. That's the video that got her all her initial popularity.
Yes!! And that blue color palette from Cotton Candy is supposed to represent that video! Such a nice touch!
Her name’s spelled Vivienne

She is also responsible for a lot of animation of Angel dust from hazbin so good catch on that
"no one is that good at soundaliking"

He's not truly enjoying himself while indulging, and that causes him to fail the vibe check.
the sheer disbelief when bee starts speaking is amazing. "that can't be... is it...?" oh yes, yes it is
The reason why this ep was delayed was bc of Kesha! She was still in a legal trouble when she did the voice/the ep finished production
Slight modification. Kesha herself wasn't the cause as much as her record label producers were. Kesha was totally on board, but stuck in legal drama that she could not avoid, so the episode got delayed until after (I think) episode 3 of season 2
So to give some context on this episode:
This was made to be the finale of season 1 but only came out in the middle of season 2. Viv described it as a last visual bang and celebration of the animation team, a visual spectacle to show the talents of the animators. That is why Bee’s design is… like that. XD it is purposely complicated, this is THE “show off” episode.
Now why was it delayed?
Im sure you noticed Kesha is here 😅, I don’t know how much you know about her so Im going to give you the context:
A while back in 2014 Kesha sued her producer Dr Luke alleging that he had sexually assulted and tormented her for a decade, then he counter sued for defamation.
Frr man. People analyse everything but are so dense over the most simple obvious things
Blitz changes shirts tho, he didnt go to Ozzies with the horse pun shirt
Tex has GAME bruh, mans literallt bagged the sin of gluttony
So one thing this breakdown made me realize is the fact that, while Queen Bee can change her size, whenever she's talking to Loona, aside from that one outburst, she's always standing at Loona's level. The only ones she towers over are the demons who are naturally very small, with the other exception of when she takes on Blitz's challenge and gets larger to basically make a stand.
I love how much Bee is like, a Sin of the people.
Gluttony indeed
Ikr? Like the design is very on the cusp of being too much, but it literally just ends up being perfect for the character and the embodiment of gluttony as a whole
Maximalist and self-indulgent character design? Absolutely gluttonous.
One interesting thematic detail in this episode is that Tex and Bee's relationship is contrasted with Blitz and Stolas's in the previous one.
They're both examples of relationships between a low-class hellborn and demon royalty, but one is obviously much healthier than the other.
I'm still curious why their relationships are not a controversy when the uh you-know-whose are a scandalous "secret".

I think that's a good way to put it. Like how bees harvest pollen - many plants *need* bees to do that. Beelzebub's got a big ole mixer to collect pollen and give everyone a great time, it's a mutualism thing.
Would it shock you that people (me included) Ship Loona with both Tex and Queen bee as a Poly relationship? It even fits bee's gluttony theme

Just fyi they do not get any ad revenue from the show. While part of the show is funded by the Patreon, most revenue comes from merch sales. They consistently put out and advertise new merch with a separate video usually before/after an episode drops or during a special holiday (e.g. Valentine's day or Christmas)
It helps that they have some of the best merch I've ever seen. From the look of the designs to the quality.
"No kink shaming from me"
And I appreciate you very much sir 😊
The only kink shaming that should be allowed is shaming those whose kink is being kink shamed.... those dirty dirty shameful people.
And when Blitz gets there and people start recognizing him, he becomes her lifeline, so if anything happens, she knows she's safe- not in the sense that he'll go beat someone up for her [but he will], but she _knows who she is with him._
Blitz's presence is why Loona was able to have a good time and make friends in the first place.

Watching your brain self destruct when Kesha arrived was the best part.
+
Youre super right, that's exactly how I understood things too!!!
Yeah, as an introvert myself im pretty fammiliar with the behavior where you leech onto one of your more sociable friend/family member to get yourself included. I guess Skyen didn't do this as much as others have so he didn't pick up that this was what Loona was doing.
I rewatched Season 2 and two things stood out:
1. The animation quality in every single episode is ridiculous.
2. It deconstructs so many things in season 1 that we just kind of took for granted

This show universe made me realize i loved jmi's VA work
the kesha cameo was actually huge for the creator, if you look up her early videos she has a "die young" music video that you can see reflected a little in this one
One of the party dogs has a "teh" shirt, which is the most early 2000s webcomic reference possible.
I mean, it's still running.
Skyen going through 5 stages of grief at the sound of Kesha voice is comedy gold
Just in case you're unaware, the demon's typically associated with the seven deadly sins are:
- Lucifer: pride.
And obviously to be a visual spectacle that showcases the animators skills!
i do not want to be one of those pressuring superfans who fail to see creators as human beings with their own personal lives-
i am merely expressing my adoration for your content on the hellaverse and arcane as well.
i am beyond excited for any upcoming videos in regards to either of them and am buzzing to hear more of your thoughts!
stay healthy, lots of love!
I think Loona actually thought she still had a shot with Tex until she actually met Bee.
@@helicopterharry5101What? No.. I don’t think she wanted to get Tex to cheat?
(That's reading into it with a bit of liberty, but it's clearly a "He's my dad, I would know if he wasn't okay, I know he can handle anything how dare you suggest otherwise" kinda insecurity if nothing else.)
You could definitely keep that vibe while giving Loona more focus and independent development though.
"What kind of black magic did they use to get KE$HA?"
One of Vivzi's first animation projects was an AMV of a Kesha song, Die Young
Doing good work, and actively cultivating both a loyal fanbase and industry connections for a decade does a lot of work.
1:26:30 One thing to note, it seems like Blitz sleeps on the couch even on the regular (not just this day being particularly bad) and that room Loona has is probably the only bedroom in the apartment.
My favorite part of the episode is how surprisingly responsible Bee is as a host
What’s BL?
@@JustNiiicaBL stands for boy’s love, aka yaoi, aka gay stuff lol
Been there, dude
@@timeneses Hell yeah brother! BL for the win!!
" i stayed awake until 8am because i was reading BL " based and relatable
an interesting bit of loona's character is that she's actually not a teenager, she's around 22 but clearly she's incredibly socially stunted and her teenager-like behavior really shows that she's spent significant chunks of her life without much healthy socialization. you could say both her and blitz are emotionally stunted
is it me or did he not get that Queen Bee is the embodiment of Gluttony
Yeah, I think he was reeling too hard from realizing who the voice belongs to
But I am surprised he didn't even acknowledge the giant Baelzebun sigil she's dancing in front on at one point
The central story of this episode was clearly "look at Kesha's sick ass fursona" XD
Love ur commentary
time for that Cotton Candy episode! with a touch of emotional distress, but what's Helluva Boss without it!
I am genuinely impressed that he guessed Ke$ha's voice from like...two lines of dialogue.
Yes, you are doing a mistake by instantly watching next episode, but we all would do that mistake over and over, if we had new episodes available :)
Also, whos gonna fuck with a sin?
The goetia are more like middle management. They are obsessed with their image. It's way worse for them.
It's less patreon and more merch. They push seasonal merch that is absolutely adorable. Like they have merch people like. They have Stolas's grimour as a notebook it's great.
I'm doing my part etc 🫡 💸 I hope they'll keep releasing those youtooz mini figs after the first 3 arrive in June 😍
"Im doing something stupid" oh good we're keeping with the theme of the episode xD hooray for gluttony!
"the architecture looks like Heaven, where is this?"
Honestly, interesting observation.
Please, keep repeating how great a job they are doing!
The pure irony of someone actually being that good at sound aliking as Kesha didn't provide the singing voice.
I've had Cotton Candy stuck in my head the past few days in anticipation of you reacting to this episode.
i found helluva boss through twitter when this episode came out because people kept posting about it on my tl being very, very angry but i was watching all the clips and thinking the animation looks sweet, so i started watching the series
Enthusiastic about being stuck at the desk while everyone else has fun murdering- actually that might be an oxymoron hold on-
Everytime I see a new one of these videos in my recomended I get a massive smile on my face. They are an absolute delight.
She's 22
Like her age isn't really mentioned in the show itself but I feel like it's at least hinted at that she isn't a teenager
in his defense, she acts exactly like a teenager (super understandable because of her background, but i also understand the assumption)
oh and also she has a very young dad and she gets called "sweet pup" so yk
We find out in episode 4 of season 2. Not directly, but that's when we find out how long ago Blitz adopted her, add that to "almost 18" and we get her current age.
I actually like the story in this episode. Let me try to explain really quick
As an introvert myself I do want to socialize, but I tend to overthink and become ackward and then uncomfortable and then want to leave cuz I don't feel like I belong. However if I have even 1 friend around I can retreat to in case I don't feel comfortable anymore, I suddenly feel more comfortable in any social situation. And I feel like that's what happened to Luna when Blitz came. She got the courage to give it another try and let people in, because she knew that if things go south, she has him there
And I love that she also reciprocates the feeling.
Honestly? These are critical analysis videos. Which is so very much better than reaction videos.
Yea I can't come back to some schmuk just watching an episode giving two ire three comments once in a while. The bar is so high I can barely see it
Hell most "reviews" are basically just explaining the plot.
What if the song "I'm what You want, not what you need" means for Loona that Beelzebub is the way that Loona wants to be but not the way that she needs to have friends or to be happy.
But who knows, maybe it's not :)
Also in case you didn't notice Bee is the queen of Gluttony as in over indulgence
