I have the new Thar (LX, petrol, manual, hardtop) so obviously my money is on it. But before plonking my money on the Thar, I spent time going thru the material in the public domain on both the Thar & the Gurkha. My takeaway was that FM doesn't want to do any serious in-house R & D on the Gurkha - they knew they were on to a good thing cloning-?? the G-Wagon, as it was decades ago. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since then, the Indian buying public is a whole lot smarter today, and this is why the Gurkha has remained a distant also-ran in the race. This was the reason for my opting for the Thar.
This is the best Verdict I have seen in the Gurkha and Thar comparison videos, that we need to celebrate that both these off-road vehicles are made here in India and we don’t have to settle for compact SUVs anymore.
