I believe the abrupt ending symbolizes how life abruptly ends. We can never truly prepare for that. Just as we do not want this song to end, it suddenly stops. IMO Angelina has written a masterpiece which will provide comfort to countless billions of people who have lost a loved one. That was a heartfelt reaction, Lukas! Thank you for reacting so quickly. The video that was taken down focused on her from the start, where this one begins with the pianist. There are slight differences between this and the lyric video, which you would certainly enjoy watching, but I'm pleased that she actually made two recordings and didn't simply lip sync. She wrote that in the first studio recording tears were streaming down her face. I've also read that she began writing this shortly after his death but didn't bring it to fruition until she began working with the Stargate Music production team (LA-based Stargate was formed by two Norwegians who have been very successful indeed).
She has said that years were running down her cheeks as she recorded this song in the studio used in the lyrics version, which is a must see. The graphics in that version were done by AJ and her grandmother.

Kevin Neal I realize you and many other would rather listen to live version of artists and their song but here I believe the official release, the lyric video speaks more sincerely than the live version. Like others have stated, the artwork in the official video was done by Angelina and her grandmother and put to graphics. In Angelina's promo the day before the release she stated that this is for everyone that has lost someone they love and also for her grandfather.

I have noticed that this song bring a lot of reactors to talk about love and loss and their own lives, much more than the technical aspects of the song. I think that is testiment to Angelina Jordan’s gift as a storyteller. Sure, she knows her craft and instrument better than most singers two or three times her age, and has an incredible voice. But she always puts the song and her often unique interpretation of its story first, and vocally does what is needed to tell the story right. Not more and not less. With Angelina it is never about what she can do, always about what the song calls for. About that abrupt ending: In musical terms, it does not resolve, which means go back to its original and expected key root. Also in musical terms, this leaves the listener wanting more (and has an easy solution: If you put it on repeat, it WILL resolve - with the very first chord of the next playing!). A jazz singer and musician at heart, Angelina knows this full well, so clearly it is intentional. But from her own «What is life», «Shield» and now this beautiful song, we also know that Angelina is quite philosophically minded. So I leave it for everyone on his or her own to interpret that a song about love and loss does not resolve musically, even though lyrically is does (with the eventual solution to losing a loved one being the certainty of always carrying our memories of them in our hearts and still feeling their presence as we go on).

I choose to think of it ultimately as a song about the living moving forward with full knowledge of who has been lost but also with the knowledge that no one is truly gone who has once lived. I think Angelina was fully aware of how that would resonate with those of us who have lost someone recently and she made this song for herself and for all who are grieving.
Don't like the song but I still love her singing. Memories of lost love ones shouldn't be a lament. This is her third song about her grandfather. All melancholy, Just look at the dark setting. There's no feeling of joy. It's melancholy and sadness. Those memories should be a celebration. No one wants to be remembered in sorrow and loss. No one wants to leave the pain of sorrow behind .They want to leave joy and love. I know from loosing both my parents and about 25-30 close friends in the same number or years. Having said that I have to say - She i an amazing singer with all the vocal tools of the best ever but becoming the Queen of Melancholy. I hope she finds happiness. Emotional connection is absolutely Angelina's superpower. I was very close to my mom and was her caretaker for her last decade. She died in April 2018 and yes, even though I'm not any kind of believer she's regularly in my dreams. This song captures something very deep about that, both the joy of memories and the sadness of loss.

Lukas, I have truthfully watched many vocal coaches to weightlifters (lol) who attempt to hold it together while watching Angelina sing. From her youth as you have to any latest songs she sings or covers if you will , my point is your comments always seem to reflect what the majority of us feel to be and that is blessed to witness this child rise from her young success to where she is today, on the verge of greatness (as if she has not already attained that plateau. I, too, believe the version with the art is better also for not having a piano that's a bit too loud.
Lukas, At first I wasn’t sure if I liked the abrupt ending, but after thinking about it I liked that it left us filling in the blanks.

I lost my mother about a month ago now. This song is a balm to me, capturing the connection and appreciation I have for my mom even though she is a million miles away. It is beyond belief that a 14-year-old can express such sensitivity that brings expression to my feelings, grief, and relief from sorrow. I hope everyone finds solace in this song, as I have.

I have noticed that this song bring a lot of reactors to talk about love and loss and their own lives, much more than the technical aspects of the song. I think that is testiment to Angelina Jordan’s gift as a storyteller. Sure, she knows her craft and instrument better than most singers two or three times her age, and has an incredible voice. But she always puts the song and her often unique interpretation of its story first, and vocally does what is needed to tell the story right. Not more and not less. With Angelina it is never about what she can do, always about what the song calls for.
About that abrupt ending: In musical terms, it does not resolve, which means go back to its original and expected key root. Also in musical terms, this leaves the listener wanting more (and has an easy solution: If you put it on repeat, it WILL resolve - with the very first chord of the next playing!). A jazz singer and musician at heart, Angelina knows this full well, so clearly it is intentional. But from her own «What is life», «Shield» and now this beautiful song, we also know that Angelina is quite philosophically minded. So I leave it for everyone on his or her own to interpret that a song about love and loss does not resolve musically, even though lyrically is does (with the eventual solution to losing a loved one being the certainty of always carrying our memories of them in our hearts and still feeling their presence as we go on).

It's a beautiful song and with such beautiful feelings, she is able to improve herself every time, a few weeks after the release of the original version, there are subtle differences compared to the version with the lyrics, it is even more exciting and seeing her sing is priceless!

She looks so much older in this video; a beautiful young lady. Her voice is so nice to listen to and the fact that English is not her first language gives her voice a uniqueness that sets her apart from all the other singers.... you can feel what it is she wants to convey. A great review again thanks Lukas. In another review someone made the observation that the sudden end may be in reference to what happens when a person dies. Angelina has used a sudden ending with fade to black on other in memoriam videos such as her one to Aretha Franklin.

Thank you so much for your respectful and thoughtful reaction. This song is incredible. It is at once heartbreaking and uplifting. I choose to think of it ultimately as a song about the living moving forward with full knowledge of who has been lost but also with the knowledge that no one is truly gone who has once lived. I think Angelina was fully aware of how that would resonate with those of us who have lost someone recently and she made this song for herself and for all who are grieving.

Don't like the song but I still love her singing. Memories of lost love ones shouldn't be a lament. This is her third song about her grandfather. All melancholy, Just look at the dark setting. There's no feeling of joy. It's melancholy and sadness. Those memories should be a celebration. No one wants to be remembered in sorrow and loss. No one wants to leave the pain of sorrow behind .They want to leave joy and love. I know from loosing both my parents and about 25-30 close friends in the same number or years. Having said that I have to say - She i an amazing singer with all the vocal tools of the best ever but becoming the Queen of Melancholy. I hope she finds happiness. Isn't it much better to inspire with joy and love and happiness than commiserate on sadness and loss. It's time for some feel good music.

Emotional connection is absolutely Angelina's superpower. I was very close to my mom and was her caretaker for her last decade. She died in April 2018 and yes, even though I'm not any kind of believer she's regularly in my dreams. This song captures something very deep about that, both the joy of memories and the sadness of loss.

Lukas, I have truthfully watched many vocal coaches to weightlifters (lol) who attempt to hold it together while watching Angelina sing. From her youth as you have to any latest songs she sings or covers if you will , my point is your comments always seem to reflect what the majority of us feel to be and that is blessed to witness this child rise from her young success to where she is today, on the verge of greatness (as if she has not already attained that plateau.
