    i think buying just the fiberglass flares and paying a good body shop to reinforce them with either aluminum panels or building a metal rod skeleton structure under them, financially makes way more sense than buying new quarter panels and replacing them. I would rather keep OEM spot welds on the current quarter panels. That other option about cutting out just the flares from OEM 1M quarter panels seems morally wrong for some reason, almost as wrong as cutting up a real 1M haha.

  • @deathwav0
    @deathwav0 Год назад +9

    oem quarters would be awesome. But if you do that then you might wanna think of the carbon fiber roof and headliner at the same time. Really expensive though. Keep up the good work and thank you for the content.

      I agree I was thinking the same thing. If your gonna go as far as complete OEM quarters might as well go the extra mile and do carbon roof. It’ll definitely set the build apart from the others. But if that’s not an option I would just do fiber glass flares

    That supersprint muffler is the BEST for the 1 series. Pair of with some remus resonated midpipes + catless downpipes and it’s probably the BEST N54 exhaust setup ever. Buddy has it on his 1m and it sounds incredible

  • @Unamatrix01

    I would suggest that you try the fibreglass flares first, as it appears that their availability best suits your condensed time schedule. As a mechanical engineer the concern that I would have is the high reliance on body filler and Bondo ostensibly nonmetallic materials. In doing your research, I would implore you ask the owners of 1M conversion clones where they live and what the delta is like between the Summer and Winter seasons. For instance, here in Toronto, Canada body shops do not rely heavily on body filler and Bondo as we can experience Summer extreme temperatures of 40C and Winter extreme temperatures due to a Polar Vortex of -30C. That 70C temperature delta would cause thermal failure of the body filler and Bondo on the applied surfaces of the car, even in an enclosed and insulated garage. The other determining factor would also be the Summer and Winter delta of your region. Finally, the other obvious truth is that if the fibreglass flares fail, you can always resort to the OEM rear 1M quarter panels, unfortunately at increased cost in having to complete the same task twice.

    I am not one to cut corners but do the flares, just have them done properly by a solid shop and it will be down in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the price of the oem panels.

    I’m really loving this build I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished product. I have to echo your opinion on the hood pins I too am
    Not a fan hopefully they’re not chrome if so maybe powder coat em black as well. For the quarter panels I would opt for oem but I would bet 2-4week lead time and cost of parts and bodywork would likely be pricey but you would get the cleanest look by far in my opinion.

    As always, go with your gut on the flares. But only knowing you from this channel, I think you would regret not going with the whole panel. Hell, with the connections and respect (well earned by the way) you have, there may be a dealer or even a body shop that may have a set and may be willing to work with you. I am almost positive, ready by February or not, you'll kick yourself for not going all the way with this.

    Nice work! Rear quarters should be OEM if you can justify the cost. As for rear diffuser, personally I'd personally keep it the dark gray that it comes snice it provides a nice contrast in the rear. Maybe you'll arrive at that decision when you end up getting it :). As for headlights, look into the OEM euro lights with clear corners. Just make sure you get proper ones that are adaptive and equivalent to US spec. I know euro has multiple versions and it can get confusing. Cant wait to see how this turns out.
