I looked everywhere and found no information about it. It was revealed by a developer and judging by how Half Life fans reacted to it, I'm assuming it wasn't "known since the day HL2 was released".
I remember doing the seal easter egg with my brother on Splinter Cell a few years back, we were playing late at night with the TV volume low, had to be quiet since people were sleeping, next thing we know we find a seal and it blasts the music. We laughed so hard at that moment. Fantastic game.

Here's a really old one that I don't think I have seen anyone mention yet: In the original Warcraft or Warcraft II (I think it was one of those anyway) there was a button somewhere in the settings where you could test the compatibility of your sound card. When you pressed the button, a male voice with a very strong british accent would enthusiastically exclaim "Your SOUND card works perfectlyy!". If you kept pressing the button a number of times the voice would ask "Enjoying yourself?". And if you continued to press it some more times after that the voice would finally angrily exclaim "IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!".

I’ve been an avid Half-Life fan for years, but I hadn’t heard of the HL2 final G-Man location until now. I’m fucking astonished, not only was there one final hidden G-Man which had been missed, but it was incredibly subtle.

It's crazy how secret developers keep some stuff. Even the COD Zombies one shown the developers have said that there are still easter eggs from World at War that people haven't discovered yet.
How were these found: How many were accidentally? How many were fucking with the game's code and something was unaccounted for? How many weren't found until a developer reveal? Etc etc.

All of these just put a big smile on my face. Some of them (like the splinter seal egg) were just because of how cute and weird they were. Others (like halo, zombies, half life, ect.) were because i grew up with them and have such good memories with and it makes me happy to see that they haven’t been forgotten and theres still stuff to find in my favorite games.

I'm willing to bet many Easter Eggs have been found accidentally that people overlooked, thinking that it was just the natural progression of things, or never realized what triggered.

as far as i know... no one actually knows who that is in RE4, i've seen plenty of video's about it and all that is said about it is: "its most likely someone from the dev-team, but no clue who that actually is." which is the weirdest part lol
There might be even more easter eggs in other games that we still havent found, this is one thing that i love about games
