Just watched this video. Love that vest! And great advice about checking thrift stores. As an Old West living history reenactor in addition to doing SASS shoots, I also think it's a great representation of our hobby to attempt to dress as accurately as possible to the best of our financial ability. I sew my own outfits for the SASS shoots and living history events.
I still find the great deals by thrifting. And I’m glad folks are still finding this older episode and finding it useful. I wish I had the time to learn to sew (beyond basic mending, hemming, etc).
Being a rather big guy, thrift stores do not often have anything I can use. I did manage to find some really nice black silk suspenders for $2 at a thrift store in Mishawaka, Indiana. I did find a good local source for affordable shirts. At the Lighthouse Place outlet mall in Michigan City, Indiana, there's a Casual Male XL outlet. I go every so often to raid their clearance section. On my last trip, I came out with 4 great new shirts. Normal price on them was $70 each, but they were marked at 90% off, so I paid $27 for the four of them. There were two more in my size tagged at 90% off, but I don't see myself wearing bright pink.
For most of my clothing I'm just going to my old closet, where I have the pants, hats, vests, shirts, drover coat, pairs of boots and even my Dad's Zuni Indian bolo tie. But as for the leather suspenders and cartridge belts, then I have to shop. But I will subscribe as I have found the three videos of your series very good and informative.
Dang I've been buying the guns to possibly get into this and now finding out I also gotta get clothes that'll match too lol. AND I had surgery in early October on my shoulder but have since lost use of my thumb and tip of my trigger finger on dominant hand. I meet with the surgeon monday and I'll definitely be talking about this issue. I cant even pull the trigger on my 92 double action semi auto.
Here's a way to save grab a canvas drop cloth from Home Depot and a pair of pants the cheapest you can find at goodwill and cut them up to use a a pattern for your cowboy britches they are very durable and machine wash and dryer friendly
The vest is sweet. Fantastic find. I have total vest envy. I scoured my GW here and found nothing but disappointment haha. One thing about the wire... act fast. I saw a post with 5 or 6 shirts and all sold in about 10 min. Thanks for the vids. Hope to see ya at a match some time (I'm in Bend).
I stop at Goodwills when I’m traveling and, really it’s probably 1 in 50 visits that I score somethin’ really good. But, the hunt is fun! I’ll be up in Bend for Oregon State Championship in June!!
$10 for my green coat. It's a 1960s yish, found in Flagstaff, Az. Good news about men's tailoring is it hasn't changed much. Took some tweaks and hems, but it's there now :D
I found a nice brown raincoat and a black Calvin Klein coat that work perfectly as long coats, both at a local antique shop. I love thrift shops for that reason!
Very cool video! Wonderful innovative final camera placement...where you would rather not be in the 1870s or 80s, unless you liked being somebody’s Huckleberry...
Thank you! I really like it when someone comments on one of these older videos and I get to go back and review it to see what I had done! Appreciate the comment! - Jed 🤠
I picked up a pair of those Boulet shooter boots during the Wild West Mercantile VIP sale you showed there. I fully expect to drop some time with those ;-). California state championship is in April, are you going to be there? I'll be there to see what it's all about, but I won't be shooting in it. I also think you need to be a CA resident to win overall, but it'll be a fun time I'm sure.
+Andy Yates, I don't know about CA State yet. But, if I do make it please look me up! (I'll try and put an announcement on the channel if I'm going, or at least on our Facebook page).
It would take more than a fancy vest to make me look good on the range. Hey, if Perg keeps crowding you on the line trying to get in the video frame, give him an elbow to the gut, that'll learn him! :D
Funny, but true, story... I was shootin’ my 1887 Lever Action Shotgun at a match called True Grit, this was years ago, and you had to shoot something like 10 shotgun rounds. Anyways, they’d leave that shotgun still smoldering and, of course, smoking. Well, one of ‘em landed in my hair, it didn’t so much “set it a blaze” but, I could definitely smell that distinct smell of singed hair... 🤠
Lookin good Jed! I think you have given some sound advice on thrift shopping for cowboy attire, as the cost of the sport keeps many new shooters away. I have found a website, www.wholesalecentral.com/sercal0001/store.cfm?event=showcatalog&catid=73818 where a complete holster rig can be had for $65 and cotton off white henley shirts for $9.50. These are what I used when I first got into the sport, and the holster rig is a real bargan at $65. Thanks for addressing this and giving sound advice to our current and future pards out there.
Congratulations you are the best channel for sass shooting but not for me. I shoot the old guns to feel what my ancestors experienced , the kick, the buck in your hand and the smell of black powder. I'm not really into mouse loads. A old timer in sass told me its just a game but not for me. Geed by Keep up the good work any Sass shooter that doesn't follow your channel is really missing something great.
Such well done videos. I am going to start posting your links to shooting on my friend George's channel, Target Suite. ruclips.net/user/shorts3X4ewqsfQCQ

I do love a good deal, Thrift Store or not. Looking forward to more Thrift Shops opening back up after the pandemic. - Jed 🤠

I would love to do this. But the prices prevent me. So I will enjoy watching these videos. TY for sharing
Totally understand, it’s an expensive hobby/sport. Glad you’re enjoying it vicariously!
Nice vest! Great tips for people getting into this sport/lifestyle.
Thanks Arizona Ghostriders! We're enjoying what you're doing on your channel as well.
Thanks!

🤔 I never did develop very good sewing skills…

This looks interesting. I will have to find a NC Chapter near Charlotte
+James Morrow, Do it! And let us know how it goes.
Yes, you always look good, and very nice shooting! PP.
Thanks Uncle Pete.
I see outfit stuff at the Good Will, but never know if it's the right stuff !!
Almost any vest will work. It’s one of those things that when you put it on you can tell if it’ll work in a “Cowboy” environment.

@@JEDiTV I'll do that, thanks for the tip :-))

That’s great information, even if prices have gone up a bit in the past five years…
