Welcome to the old Vest
The Vild Vest!
@@ArizonaGhostriders He was known as the fastest gun in the Vest!
@@skydiverclassc2031 Very Vunny.
@@ArizonaGhostriders sounds like a Verman accent
Verlly interesting but Schtupid.
I embrace your nerdness. I remember years back when the book Packing Iron about period western gun carrying came out. I spotted it at the local library. When I went to check out, the librarian said, "When we got that in, I was wondering who would read it. I should have known it would be you.". So I understand comepletely.
Yes!
I wear a vest most everyday for years! Pockets are a plus!
They are!
Loved this episode! I wear modern-day vests all the time. Though intentionally try not to look like a biker. Especially love Winter vests. They keep my torso warm, but still allow free range of movement of both my arms and my shoulders. Plus, yeah; those extra pockets are great.
Thanks for sharing. a vest is a very useful garment.
The pockets, what sold me about 40 yrs ago, they come in hand. I’m a pocket watch kind of guy (have about dozen or so) and they look good hanging on my vests (also over a dozen) have a problem, collecting things I like, ie: vests, watches, hats, boots etc, one these days “The Old Lady’s gone shoot me. Oh yea got a bunch of those too (lever action and single action) think I might have a problem 🤪. Nice vid, 👍🏼❤️🤠
The more the better!
Vests were an iconic part of the Victorian wardrobe. They were both elegant and practical. Thanks
Yup! You're welcome!
The staple of my daily outfit...love my vests!
Though I found out this past year that there are some that work better in the hotter weather...and some better for winter.
Yes...I understand that epiphany.
If i had that vest, i would watch the movie & point at it every time it's shown shouting 'he's got my vest' lol
HAHA!
I love how people in the old west come up with such great fashion.😉
It was a dressy era
Thanks so much Cheese !! That 3:10 to Yuma vest is Fantastic !!!! Now all you need is the Cimarron Holy Smoker revolver to complete the outfit :-)
Yeah, right? Thanks.
I don't have enough of that material to make one for Dirty Dan! I hope to have a bigger collection than Jedidiah Knight. Thank you Santee!
Thank you, Richard. See ya later!
Beautiful work! Was that a one time thing or is there a chance I could commission something from you?
Getting to be just like Saturday morning cartoons for the new century the way I look forward to you weekly video.👍
Hahaha!
I’ve seen pictures of Boers during the First Boer War wearing what were essentially tactical vests, with pockets or tabs to hold stripper clips of ammo
Don't know much about the Boer Wars, but I wouldn't doubt that!
They also wore the single vest alone because of the heat.
They were just as stressed by the heat as we are today & found ways to combat the heat.
Even women around the house wore simple dress smocks & used cottons of light color during the summer's when going out.
Right. They were jealous of the local Indian women because they were able to wear a lot less.
Santee, I had thought you were completely vested, but I see that you got divested. What a drag.
HAHAH!
I wear a canvas vest everyday for working outside, and I don’t know what I would do without it. Great video!
Love that!
Poor Santee, I knew somebody was going to get that nice vest from you. I may have to rethink my wardrobe choices.
Right?? You have vests?
Those vests are really cool. I want one.
Awww, then if we both show up to prom together wearing the same vest it will be awkward, Ralph!
@@ArizonaGhostriders Ahhhhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Can't have that now, can we?
Fun fact: The French word Vêtement means clothing or garment & gets anglicised to vestment. Thus, it's possible that it got truncated in American English to Vest.
Maybe!
I picked up a lapelled tweed waistcoat for SASS. Rugged and breathable at the same time!
Nice
Dang it, Dan. He's at it again. I have one vest. Made of Canvas. I need to get another one and a overcoat. Keep the vest and canvas duster while outside, but in town, wear a fancy vest and overcoat.
Sure. It all works.
Thanx Santee. In addition to being a good video, this video led me to watch S.C.A.R.
Watching it for the third time I saw a commercial afterward for a belt I think I want to buy.
Cool!!
the idea of having a character almost makes this video seem like a dnd guide which is pretty cool
ok!
I absolutely love my vests. It's one of my favorite articles of clothing.
Yup!
Santee was really...invested in this episode's creation.
Oooo, good one!
What's really cool about that vest is not only is it a copy of the Yuma vest, big Yuma was also filmed there at Old Tucson. So that's like a double whopper!!!
@@LarryTalbot_1313 Sorry to disappoint you, but the remake with Crowe was made in New Mexico. The original was filmed in part at Old Tucson.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Actually that does dissapoint me. But at least now I know. I also just learned that ignorance WAS bliss!
🎶See our vest, See our vest, made with real gorilla chest🎶
Every time I hear the word vest, I think of that episode of The Simpsons.
LOL!
Great video as always. I have had several vests over the years. Had a nice Confederate military vest that I really liked. I now have a gray civilian version to wear with my Confederate uniform. I also have a nice herringbone twill vest from Wahmaker. A friend gave me a copy of John Wayne's vest for my fiftieth birthday a year ago. I love a good vest. Great for everyday wear.
Arizona red wears the John Wayne vest everyday too. Cool collection, Eric.
Indeed, a good in vest ment! Thanks Fellers! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Thank You!
Mighty fine. Thanks Santee
Very welcome
And according to Horrible Histories, Charles II was quite the party animal. :)
Oh yeah. Just look at him! :-)
He also liked wearing a fancy wig.
@@eldorados_lost_searcher It was all the rage, it seems.
You make the Vest videos my friend.
LOL!!! You're a funny one, Ravenhawk.
RUclips recommended your video on the cuffs to me. And now I am here and my plans to sleep have kind of vanished.
Thank you. Get some sleep.
Mighty great lookin' 3:10 to Yuma vest. Perfect match. My collection of vests consists of, two leather, two herringbone twill, and three canvas. I need to distress at least one of these, but still trying to decide which one.
Awesome collection. Well done.
Finaly we have this video!
Hope you liked it.
objectively hilarious that you own the vest from 3:10 to yuma. these videos are phenomenal
Thank you!
These just keep gettin' better and better!
Glad you are enjoying them.
I liked the second loogie in the glass to make sure he gotta clean one
HA!
Vests are great for keeping your "core" warm on those frigid days out on the range.
My favorite is the one that Clint Eastwood wore in Two Mules For Sister Sarah.
Sure does!
Another great episode Santee! And if you think my vest collection is elaborate, wait’ll you see all my hats. - Jed (who also has no shortage of Coffee Mugs) 🤠
Never enough coffee mugs.
HAHAHAAH!!! I bet. Wait, I've seen it I think.
Arizona Ghostriders... it’s been updated 😉
You look mighty fine in that attractive vest at 2:31 Santee
Happy Sunday 😊
Stay safe 😷
You too. I appreciate the compliment!
I worked for American Express for about 5 years..at the time we were required to wear a 3 piece suit...Casual Friday for us meant that we could wear a sport coat.
Interesting!! WOW
It was a year back I think that came across your video on Dressing the part: Cowboy and ever since I've been keeping my eyes out for a good everyday waistcoat. A great video to get more insight into these lovely pieces of clothing, thanks!
also you're looking mighty smart in that Crowe waistcoat!
Ain't I though. Thanks for watching. Check out the vests at River Junction trade co...or Wild West Mercantile.
Glad to see you guys are alright keep yourselves safe from the virus
Well...so far!
Thanks again, might just look for a vest. Happy trails to you guys
Sometimes you can find good ones in Goodwill.
Arizona Ghostriders thanks, I’ll check it out
Great lookin' vest from Richard. I'd put it in the gun safe!
HAHAA....then there would be no room for the guns. My safe is a small one!
@@ArizonaGhostriders You're right. I wouldn't wanna wrinkle it either.
With Dirty Dan around one may need a VEST safe... Jesse James, Santee... I tip my hat to ya 🤠
This is going sound odd, but remember my martial arts background. I was impressed by Dan's neck grab. He got the trachea which causes the victim to lift up and back. An untrained person tries to throttle the whole throat. However, to actually keep you safe, he turned his thumb out instead of in. Whether done intentionally or not - good technique!
He, my brother, and you would be on my side in a fight for sure.
@@ArizonaGhostriders I'd be in good company.
Those vest pocket guns had to have a home to belong too. I just don’t have a good color in my hombre shirt to go with a vest. Any recommendations?
Just a plain or thin-striped shirt. Grey is safe (so is white or ivory)
Arizona Ghostriders thanks for the tip
Santee, you might have to do a follow-up on this one!
Something thats always bothered me about vests is that little cut out at the bottom. No "vest" I've ever seen in history ever had that. Yet, almost every place sells them like that. Also the back. "Vests" are usually made of a silky material, while the front is made of something tougher, like canvas, etc. I haven't seen a single picture of any vest like that in history. Maybe that's the distinction between "waist coat" and "vest?"
Personally I've always wanted a John Wayne Rio Bravo vest, but it's not exactly historically accurate, but it's still pretty cool. Maybe if i ever find one...no one will notice?!
Earlier in the period (1840s) they began putting that little cut in. You can see it on some illustrations. the ones today are a bit extreme, but those notches did exist, more for dressier vests.
Hello Santee! Professional gamblers Brett and Bart Maverick would never be caught without wearing their fancy vests! Well, most of the time, anyway! Another classic television duo who always wore their fancy vests well were government agents Jim West and Artemis Gordon of "The Wild, Wild, West". It seems these four had this in common along with getting involved in strange adventures featuring scheming women and wily villains! Lol! Thanks for another great video. Take care & God bless!
Thank you! Yes, fancy dressed gamblers and Old West secret agents. Gotta love 'em.
good morning santee/dan always been a fan of such vests, childhood memorys lol, thank you
You're welcome!
Arizona Ghostriders, The Canvas Vest from the old West must be where Bikers adopted Leather Vests for riding Motorcycles. Yes I know they originally cut denim jackets
Maybe
Good Howdy mornin' Santee!! Lookin' sharp!
Hey, thanks. I clean up ok.
@@ArizonaGhostriders in your 'Sunday Go To Meetin' Clothes.
Can you make one in building techniques. I always wondered how town got erected in the most isolated area.
Got one on Houses. Check it out.
Another great educational video from the juggernauts of western living history. Many thanks!! The part where the guy says "that's just stupid" is so cool. Please make it a regular bit, like the mail bag.
Thanks, it is a regular bit. Much appreciated.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Wouldja believe I just got out of a 4 year coma?
I went so sure it would be a good idea to watch this video, but by the end I became vested in the idea. 😂😂😂😂
LOL!
I heard about the vest thing years ago. Every man wore them.
Shirts didn't have pockets. And like you said, vest holds a lot of stuff and hard to get things out pants pockets while sitting.
But no leather vest? I would have figured leather would have lasted longer and easier to take care of.
Leather is hot. Vests, pants, hats. Ask a motorcycle enthusiast in 102 degree weather....they'll tell you.
Im back gonna watch what ived missed, hope you guys are safe :)
yes, thanks.
I understand your nerdiness 😊I got in to living history in the middle seventies. When The Mountain Men with Heston and Keith came out I just had to have a bottle green Capote like Heston wore in the movie
It is good to be a nerd.
Thanks. Convince Bill Brazelton, please.
Personally this video was the absolute VEST- but aside from bad puns, this was definitely a great one Santee.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the pun. No such thing as bad ones, in my opinion.
Hey Santee! Looks like Dirty Dan wanted to be invested with your vast! 😅🤠
You got that right!
Weird I didn’t get a notification of this 2 days ago.
Well still great episode wish I got a vest after seeing this!
There's plenty vests to choose from out there.
Such a Great Show !!!!!!
🤠
Great video. First Dan gets your boots and now your vest, he’s gonna be one slicked up dude.
Schaefer sells some really nice canvas vests, I’ve got several.
Thanks for the info!
Santee thank you for another awesome video
My pleasure!
You should incorporate a modern OSHA yellow vest into a video on "Frontier Safety (or lack thereof)"
HA Yeah. I don't know where to find one.
Hats and vests, yup!
Gotta love 'em.
Just made my first buckskin vest turned out pretty great
Definitely turns heads when I come off the mountain for supplies in town
Great work!
Great video Santee stay safe
Thanks, you too!
No vests were harmed in the making of this video .
Nope!
Old west vest, the cargo pants of the old west. We replaced the pocket pistol with a cell phone charger. I found the canvas vest to be a bit surprising but it makes sense. You have a rugged job in an unpredictable climate you probably want something that is going to hold up no matter what. Speaking of vests just about every picture of me dressed up as a youngster was in a vest. It was my moms solution to dressing me up with most bang for the buck. I started refusing the vest around 11-12. Now I am watching this and going that 3:10 Yuma vest is mighty nice...
Vests need to have a comeback.
@@ArizonaGhostriders And hats, what happened to hats? people used to be so stylish, even up to the 1960s
@@phil8821 Kennedy started that. His "no hat" thing took off.
@@ArizonaGhostriders It was quite the scandal that Kennedy wouldn't wear a hat in public. I remember reading a news article from the day talking about the death of polite society. If a gentleman wasn't wearing a hat how could he properly greet a lady if he didn't have a hat to pinch between his thumb and forefinger and tip it to her.
Thanks Santee for the information and Great Video 😎
You're welcome!
Loved this video, great history as usuall Santee, keep up the great work :) :)
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks!
Nice! I just finished sewing a new "cowboy" vest for myself. I used *corduroy*, inspired by "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
I was going to put a photo of a courderoy vest in and forgot. Darn!
@@ArizonaGhostriders That's good to hear. Thanks.
I have never worn a vest, but might have to get one. I seem to remember seeing many of the wearers of vests wore them unbuttoned. Not only the "big" cowboys either. I wonder why?
Mainly buttoned for the more formal look. Unbuttoned was a little informal.
Hey, I do believe your western style comedy skits are returning US humour to a more human domain!👍✌️😀 They are interesting and funny! Well done✌️
Glad you like them!
Pistol in a vest pocket? Now I'm listening.
I knew that would get some folks!
You have a way of making everything interesting my friend.
Thank you!
This is a lovely video, you guys are awesome
Thank you! Much appreciated.
A "3:10 to Yuma" vest could prove to be profitable to a proprietor, if they would simply make their self known as a seller. I'd sure snag one up.
Yes. The challenge is finding the material that matches.
You got the best vest in all the west!
HAAH!
Congrats on 50000 subscribers!
Thank you so much 😀
Just ordered me a new vest and boots then turned on your channel... Don't reenact or anything just love the style of the time. I got a black classic canvas work vest... Outgrew my last one somehow they keep shrinking 😆 😆 😆
Well, it's up to us to bring vests back. I like the look, myself. We have many out here in AZ that wear them for everyday use.
@@ArizonaGhostriders I did when I was on the road, vest trousers hat and yes a handle bar mustache... My wife hated it 😆 😆
I was a farrier for years always wore a vest in the fall and winter freed up my arms still wear one most days. Also like gilets which are longer more like a coat without sleeves good for ccw
That's quite a job. Awesome that you did it! Thanks for sharing.
Oh my, took a dark turn
Welcome
@@ArizonaGhostriders I love Y'alls content, keep up the Great work!!!
@@HobowidaShotgun Thank you!
Great video Santee
Glad you enjoyed it
Seems we have both been in love with a vest from a movie - I'm still searching for that one Poker-dealer's vest from 2006's James Bond: Casino Royale movie.
Seems like you should be able to find the material and have someone make you one.
I always love Waistcoats, and when I call them that My mom takes a double look at me. With as many time as shes done that I think I'd need to borrow that bottle of old stink eye from you Santee. Don't worry I'll pay to refill it, but I do think she'd appreciate the gesture. Haha great video as always Santee and Compadres. Stay safe and healthy, I love this channel and everyone who watches it and We as Compadres need to stick together. Have a wonderful day pard. Lastly, I'll look forward to seein' ya on down the trail.
Thanks so much, Morgan. I get the rolled eyes sometimes, too. It's a thing...
Jed does have quite the awesome vest collection. And hat collection... and old west firearm collection... and... haha. Your 3:10 to Yuma vest though... I’m green with envy. It’d go nicely with my Hand of God holster rig 🤠.
Love the videos!
Thank you!
I reckon im a nerd as well, cause that sure is a nice vest there! You've got alot of luck!
Thank you!
Well that ain't what I was looking for but it was so dang charming I will subscribe

Extra pockets and warmth. Duke looks great but i doubt anyone in actual period wore such a leather vest

I assume that you know that the last scenes in the original 3:10 To Yuma were shot in Elgin AZ. What happened to the locomotive in that movie. That was the same place where the railroad station scene was filmed forthe movie Oklahoma and I believe the last scenes of Red River were shot there too, that one featured the V&T Reno #11.
Yes, I mention those in one of the Empire Ranch Videos.
The British term is ‘waistcoat’, AKA ‘weskit’, because it ended at the waist, funnily enough. A ‘vest’ is the undergarment (vestment) worn under a shirt
But here in the "colonies" we call them all a vest...yeah, we ruined another word. Sorry to the Brits!
Arizona Ghostriders Isn’t it strange how you guys confuse underwear for outer wear? Pants and pantaloons go under trousers and skirts respectively, lol. At least you get it right with panties 😉 can’t blame you though, as we have a propensity to adopt and butcher a number of European languages...
I have that very question, about the leather vest John Wayne wears in El Dorado, Rio Lobo, McLintock and Rio Bravo.
Hollywood...but damn nice vest.
Wearing a vest makes dirty Dan look like dapper Dan.😊
Yep!
