- Many things about the shootout at the vacant lot behind the OK Corral are misunderstood.

“He’d sell his own mother”. Sixty years ago my mother emphatically told me Wyatt Earp was a bad man. On the basis that her mother told her so. Grandma had an opinion on everything
There was a RPG called Boothill, it the boxed set was a map set with the full casting of the OK corral. We worked through what supposed to have happened, and we discovered some odd inconsistencies. At least as far as the mechanics are concerned. I've often wondered how off history is.
Being a Brit Western fan a few years back I had a vacation in Arizona, Tombstone and Boot Hill were amazing, loved every minute.
The problem with the OK corral is that people don’t really even know it as a corral it’s not even famous for being a corral it’s famous for a shootout which kind of means it was a pretty bad corral. If people don’t remember it as a place they could store their horses. Could you imagine if your local McDonald’s wasn’t known for serving burgers, but was instead known because of a police shootout
Having worked with law enforcement it makes sense to me that the Earps would have their weapons drawn. After all, if you think you may need it, the last place it should be is in the holster.
This is what bothered me about 1883, dude rolls into a major city and proceeds to assult a random guy, shoot another one in the back, who then gets hung by a mob and it's all fine. I understand a western drama were the main character ends up with a lengthy trial and jail sentence for acting like a psychopath would probably be boring but I hate when people from our recent history are portrayed like a mob of animals.
honestly, i never understood the obsession with this gunfight. it always came off as good PR from Wyatt at the expense of his brothers, it wasn’t even that interesting: others were far more interesting and had more actual impact than the fight.
Something that always bothered me is Doc Holliday's clothing in movies. eyewitnesses said he often ( and at the actual O.K. Corral gunfight, ) wore a black bowler hat with a black bow tie and a gray shotgun coat. I think a movie where he is portrayed that way would be fantastic.
From what I've read and studied, believe the Earps were just as crooked as the others. They just A- got to hide their criminality behind a badge. and B- They were the ones that got their side of the story out.
Last visited Tombstone 4 years ago. Was surprised how many longterm locals still seemed to hold to a grudge over the famous gunfight. I thought, if I, a descendant of Devil Anse Hatfield, can get over the Hatfield and McCoy feud, then these folks should be able to move on. But different places and slightly different eras. It's all good.
My favorite detail about the shooting - that, bafflingly, still hasn't been filmed to my knowledge - is that it was lightly snowing in Tombstone on the day of the gunfight.
As someone who’s been in the middle of a gun fight, shit happens fast and I think everyone sees what they see.
Santee, I have a Co-worker who is a Grandson of the Clantons and McLaurys. His family records state that the Earps were Cattle Rustling also from Mexico. His family Diary states " That he didn't understand why the Earps were bothering them, because they rustled Cattle also. Enjoyed the show, and thanks for sharing this great History Lesson.
I forgot all about the Star Trek one. It'd be pretty neat to see every film version of just the shootout, different actors, directors and cinematographers. Very cool video Santee!
I went to Tombstone in the late 80's. Back then they had some gallows set up. I read a notice nearby where they listed the hangings that had taken place in the 1880's. I was surprised how few there were. At one point there was an interval of over 20 years between them, probably fewer than you might
You know, you can just hear the joy and total excitement in Dan's voice when he said, "Wow, you're a wealth of knowledge." You can tell that he really meant that. Another great video. I look forward to reading the coroner's report on that. I always enjoy that. I may even post it in the mortician's group. I'll have to link it through your video so folks can get a better picture of what happened. Thanks for always being informative and entertaining.
First rule of law enforcement…..Never bring a drunk dentist to a gunfight. Made for an interesting serial on the very early Dr Who. Thanks again Santee. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
The Earps were charged with murder and a trial was held. There is a transcript of the trial on the internet. Many years ago I read a book titled “Wyatt Earp: The life behind the legend “ by Casey Tefertiller and is very interesting account of Wyatt and his life. I guess it is time re-read it again. Thanks for your videos. Always interesting.
Excellent recap, Santee! Like life, there is a lot of grey in this conflict. Neither groups had any angels among their members. As a side note, last time we were back in Nome we saw a plaque commemorating the location of Wyatt’s bar/saloon during the gold rush there. That guy got around!!
Great video. It is astonishing how myths, dime novels and movies have clouded the true story of what happened that day.
