The Crusade for Iberia was a total failure? Vikings still rule in the north, with Slavs in the east? All of that, and more, with unique flavor events and mission trees, in Ante Bellum 1.7 for EU4!

Ante bellum mod is one of my favorites, i love the tags, the colors and mission trees
I def hope you play more of this mod! Especially those with atypical religions in Europe, like Norse Norway or the Tengri Magyars: vanilla just doesn't have the potential for religious upheavals quite like Ante Bellum does

I’ve never seen AI yuan go Nestorian so that was a pleasant suprise
I like AB a ton and even support them on patreon. Just a bit disappointed they never worked on the Indian region. There’s a ton of interesting Alt history potential.

Technically, its still in development so they might get to it eventually, or maybe incorporate that submod into the mod itself if it fits well enough
Alt-history usually envisions Iberia as if the Reconquista failed or is still incomplete.
It would actually be a lot more likely that the the Umayyad conquest never succeeded in the first place. And the Visigothic Kingdom survived only to eventually colapse into petty kingdoms, probably along Roman administrative borders, due to feudal laws.
The Reconquista was an enormous period of hundreds of battles and political moves.
If any of these went the other way around, it would probably speed up or slow down the process, but at the end the result would be the same.
Maps mislead viewers into believing the Umayyads had a massive advantage in the beginning and it was miraculous that the tiny Asturias survived, in reality all that land "controlled" by the Umayyads was Latin and Christian, most of rural Iberians probably never even seen a "moor" in their lifetimes. This meant that the Islamic part of Spain had very little control or popular support, it is no wonder that the only periods where the Moors were not on the defensive and actually pushed back were during the Almoravid and Almohad caliphates, when they could draw manpower and resources from Morocco as well.
While Asturians could literally take over large parts of land without fighting a single battle, and were received as saviours.
On the other hand, the Islamic conquest hinged on a single, very lucky and decisive battle where the Visigothic king died and his realm was barely held together by him after completely colapsed. If the Visigothic nobility didn't betray Roderick, if Roderick lost but didn't die, if someone stepped up to succeed Roderick quick enough or if the Umayyads retreated to regroup instead of pushing their advantage, it would be very likely that the Muslim Invasion of Iberia would be no different from the Muslim Invasion of Francia.
Those facts pretty much show who the oppressive leaders were.
The muslims, especially the ummayyads, generally left non-muslims alone to believe and practice as they wished.
From the first caliphate to the most recent one (ottomans), they generally didn’t force conversion.
Meanwhile the western christians were quite brutal to fellow christians, let alone any other religious groups until more recently.
The eastern christians like the byzantines were more chill though, they were used to ruling multicultural areas.

Interesting to see the Seljuks do so well. In every game I’ve ever played they get destroyed very early by the nizzarids.
Really depends how the Nizzarids do early. If they get distracted by other nations like in the south they can definitely falter

Somehow the ante bellum russia region is even worse than in vanilla. It's so lazy, everyone has the same missions except novgorod, who just kept the vanilla ones, why. And the golden horde basically never dies but that more of a balance issue and it plagues andalusia as well, making the regions kinda stale. The western-central europe are fun tho
Unlike the actual game though, in Ante Bellum there’s a strong chance of them revamping Russia.

The anatolian Region recently got an update and its fking awesome, meanwhile basegame eu4 is still sitting on a boring ottomans that only have missions to take land.

You could go to the game files and edit the 00_estates text file to disable the ai from granting dhimmi/Brahmin autonomy by setting the ai factor to 0

I would probably redo the intro, yeah. I would agree, AB isn't really a total overhaul or anything, but definitely overhauls a lot of vanilla history. That's fair.

The Maitreya religion in China is likely a reference to the earlier form of Pure Land Buddhism, which is sort of a Buddhist version of evangelical Christianity.

fun fact about the Islamic conquests of Sicily: they were the ones to initially introduce lemons to the island, which would become a staple crop of the island, and theft of said lemons would eventually lead to the need for protection against these thefts, directly leading to the Sicilian mafia

time lapse with no dlc. It's time to be very bored. you deserve to go through what I do (got dlcs for hoi4 but not eu4). Btw any suggestions on one or two dlcs to start off with ( I somehow have like 500 hrs without btw so I don't need something good for new people necessarily)
Lions of the north is fun, but only flavour no mechanics, so might not be good as a first dlc
Art of War has some decent mechanics for peace deals and the league war, Mandate of Heaven is nice for playing in Japan and China + the diplo macro manager really makes the game a lot more enjoyable, Cradle of Civilization, Mare Nostrum, Rights of man are important too. This game really comes to life completely when you actually have all of them tbh. Watch out for a humble bundle sale, there was one earlier this year, where you could get all of them for 20 euros, probably will take a bit before it happens again. That was such a great gift for my roommate as EU4 is his favourite Paradox game

This mod personally isn't for me as I enjoy this game mostly in the knowledge that I'm working from and with real history, but it's still incredible nonetheless. None of it feels like fantasy bs, it's all very well written and balanced.
Tbh the game is always an alt-history sim because of how the AI acts, but to each their own

don't wanna be nit picky but the Byzantium should be renamed to the Latin empire (basically a crusader kingdom) and should have a couple of vassals in Greece. The Nicaean empire was the successor of Byzantine Empire which defeated the Latin empire in 1260, but still a GREAT mod.
They’re not Latin though, they’re Greek. And it’s alternate history, that’s the whole point of it being the way it is, it’s alternate. Critiquing alt history is kinda weird ngl
I really wish these mods would do the "new world" folks justice. The big issues were cultural adaptations like thinking Europeans kept their word, had honor, or followed the word of god that they said.
I want more heavy forests, and tribe tags to both get major production bonuses in specific regions, for Europeans to get massive attrition in the new worlds, and for there to be some real trade power that can be accrued by indigenous nations...
If I recall 5 days was the average lifespan of a European trader who ventured past the coast into the interior of Africa....I'd want that reflected MAJORLY in a mod like this too.
