If you came into Elden Ring expecting a linear Souls title, you played yourself from the get go. The game wants you to explore before speed running into the main bosses, it makes sense. There’s plenty of mini bosses to grind up before going down the main story

    • @xxdevilx3
      @xxdevilx3 2 года назад +600

Spot on! Some people don't understand the idea of exploration and progression. The reason margit is a hard boss is because fromsoft wants the players to explore limgrave first and see what the open world has to offer. It is genius in my opinion because if you're really good at the game you can kill margit at a low level but if you suck - like most people - you retaliate and explore the world to become better in every aspect. The game naturally guides you to make that decision.

Not just that but of these open world games Elden Ring, imo, laid things out pretty well. Rarely is there an area that doesn’t reward a little exploring and sometimes (like where summit was) you go back there once you obtain something.
Breath of the wild I couldnt quite get into because of almost the same reasons Summit gave for Elden Ring but that was mostly because it was an open space but there were also some patterns you could identify to find key points of interest. It felt similar to Skyrim.
Elden Ring however feels packed with things to do.

Without spoiling, there is an item that actually helps with the fight against Margit. The game just doesn't tell you that. When it comes down to it, Souls games are about going back to bosses once you feel ready. But in Elden Ring's case, it's about exploring the map and discovering things until you're ready to face the boss again. You get rewarded for your exploration, not for how quickly you can kill a boss.

Saying it needs to be easier because some people that are familiar with older soulsborne games are struggling would mean bloodborne and serkiro also need to be easier at the beginning. I wouldn’t say Margit is too hard as a first boss, that’s the point. He shouldn’t be your first boss. Your first boss should be like Stonedigger Troll or the Beastman of Farum Azula.
Margit is much like Gascoigne. Gascoigne was really aggressive and hard and would tell the player to go back if they missed the Cleric beast.
If you compare Taurus Demon to Margit, exactly. Compare Tarus Demon to Stonedigger Troll or whatever.
I think the “MMO” mindset is REALLY important.
Fighting Lady Butterfly without deflect for 7 hours is a lot like trying to beat Margit at SL10.
Technically your “first boss” COULD be some crazy things with how open this world is.
Also, the DS1 Filter is Ornstein and Smough which is late enough in the game that it doesn’t filter the same as Margit does.

Having beat Sekiro multiple playthroughs and it being the last FromSoft game I played, I decided to play as samurai. I went in fighting Margit with the base gear I started off with. Got my ass handed to me for a good 2-3 hours fighting him. Finally beat him after learning his attack pattern down to a T, but then I quickly realized I could've had a much easier time with the fight had I explored the world more and farmed for runes and get better gear. I was so used to Sekiro's linear pathing that I completely disregarded everything else the map had to offer prior to Margit. Now I'm taking my time going around the map and seeing what the world has in store. This game just feels like a breath of fresh air. I totally get Asmon …. that overwhelming feeling when entering a new world with so many new mechanics to understand. But those types of games, like Elden Ring, are the best type of games over the long term.
Games like Far Cry 6 and Assassins Creed are so easy mechanically and exploratory because everything is holding your hand when it comes to the UI. Games like Dark Souls and Elder Ring don’t hold your hand so it’s perfectly ok to be overwhelmed at first.
But it’s always the games that don’t baby you that turn out to be the greatest games I have ever played because you as a player figured it out. That’s what’s lacking in modern games.

If players are too hard headed to realize that there are a million other things to do in the game instead of bashing their head against Margit then yeah, maybe the game isn't for them. The first non-optional boss is all the way in the capitol, with the boss behind Margit being one of four options for progression of which only two are required. 55 yr old newb to the SoulsBorn games. Never really liked games that were "hard just to be hard" type games, but Elden Ring for some reason just drew me in. And at first, I hated it primarily because of Stormveil first boss. Just kept dying and dying. Then I stepped back and realized that I needed to explore the world and get better. I also took a look at some vids of builds and gameplay, and they helped me understand the world and SB combat a lot better. I followed the suggestions, and then started playing with different mage and bandit builds (never really like tank characters in other games). The next time I took on Margitt (sp?), made it through with 75% of my health (no crimson health potion used) and did not die. That felt bloody awesome. Some of the difficulty still gets annoying, but I also realized that leaving and coming back later is a good option. However I will say this - Blood Hunter can DIAF as far a I'm concerned! Anyway, I think I agree that the one spot that ER drops the ball is by NOT advising exploration first. By having the first NPC they see telling them to basically "Go to the castle.", tends to push new players there too early.

That being said, I think FROM did a good job on letting the player know that you should try exploring other places because the Tree sentinel that is right outside the first step already should explain to the player that fighting them is an option and just because it's the first thing you see in the open area doesn't mean it should be fought.

The closest thing you had to accessibility was to summon an AI or someone in, but I know a few people, including myself, like to play these games solo first for the experience and the challenge. I was getting pretty good at it, fighting them without taking a hit. And unlike watching people playing other games, I was free to do that, instead of: die to boss-run back-die to boss-run back, etc. just to progress the game. With Elden Ring, boss too tough? What I really like about this game compared to others in the souls series, is that when you are faced with a boss that you are having a hard time against, the game allows you to explore the vast map to fight enemies and maybe find another boss that may be easier or even just to clear your mind. Alot bosses in previous games were literal roadblocks where you couldn't really do much else until you kill them. Which exists in this game to an extent but you have much more freedom than other games.

The tree sentinel 100 yards from where you spawn at is the first lesson. Chances are you got your ass kicked by him and had to leave and come back after getting a few levels. I totally understand that with games like this, sometimes people prefer having a set boss order and path you need to follow. I mean when I first started playing, it was pretty overwhelming and I actually looked online to see if anyone had published a sort of "standardized boss order" just so I had some idea of where I should go and when. The biggest game design flaw is that they sit there and tell you to go to bosses you have no chance of beating. There's no series of bosses that get harder over time that lead up to the important bosses. Instead of the general formula which would still be completely usable in the open world they threw it all away and made a wander fest that a ton of people don't like.

You're making it sound like the game gets in your face and says "GO FIGHT THE MAIN BOSS YOU COWARD DO IT NOW RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING" the game gives you an almost missable way of telling you where to go if you want to take on the main bosses. Key word being *if* you want to. The game has tons of bosses littered around that vary in difficulty and you can tell how difficult a boss will be based on the mobs surrounding it. It's not some mystery to figure out how bosses work. Can you fight all the mobs leading up to a boss relatively easily with little to no health loss? Then you're gonna be able to handle the boss. Is there some grinding if you want to be able to fight bosses properly and take them on without getting your shit pushed in on 2 seconds? Yea, but the other games had that too. But you can easily wipe the first 3 or so side bosses you can encounter with starting gear and skills, (aside from Tree Sentinel) if you have the gameplay down.
As for the "wander fest a ton of people don't like" I have hardly seen anyone complain about the open world aspect, considering you can't move 5 feet in any direction a majority of the time without bumping into enemies. Sure sometimes there are areas where there isn't a whole lot going on but I guarantee if they did what you wanted and placed enemies every few feet like the og games, people would hate it far more than you're claiming cuz it would be totally unfair and a slog.

I agree with 95% what he said but I have to half disagree with the whole “filter” part. Is is a word used by egotists? Yes. There definitely exists people who wants to feel superior by belittle players, who are struggling and reaching a point of frustration, further by saying something like “lol you just got filtered bro” etc.
However I think it’s false to state that devs put in these difficult enemies or bosses to actively “filter” their customers. I believe that any sort of bump along the way of a game is for the devs to encourage the player to learn something different. I sucked so much at games that I actually had trouble with bokoblins in BotW hard mode. I didn’t expect them to be this beefy, regen, or pose a very high risk as a mob. So what do I do? I simply leave them alone and learned along the way to use all the tools and tricks in the bag without having to bash my head against them repeatedly.
Same with Margrit for me. Granted this is on a different scale but once I realize that I have no knowledge or the tools to take him on I just opted to leave. I mean it’s not like the game was actively trying to railroad me into fighting him either, no? You had almost full exploration of the world without even beating him. So yeah, I just don’t think Margrit was just there to purposely discourage players into quitting.
Also on the side note I don’t think it’s just soulsborne players who have this railroad mentality. I believe it’s the majority of gamers these days. Games lately have been so linear that people automatically expect the game to go step by step to be like the instructions of a manual. So when a game encourages you to try things differently people just assume that it is done out of some malicious intent against the player. And it’s a shame because it just allows the bad actors to run with that false narrative to create a rift between players, and between players and the game it self.

These games including Elden Ring are actually very smart with how it shows the player what is feasible without forcing it on them. when exploring Limgrave you find enemies and materials that suite your level and as you move to other areas enemies become increasingly more challenging along with the rewards becoming bigger. if you go farther east and hit an enemy and barely do any damage and get alot of runes then thats a clear sign as a player that this place out of your league but it also doesn't force you to leave or block its location. this allows for player freedom while creating a natural course of progression.
Having trouble with Margit? its not a filter its just a natural point to show what is waiting for you past that point in the castle. if you're barely doing damage then your weapon might need to be upgraded and you can also get more levels by fighting dungeon bosses. still need some help? well then there is always summons and co-op.

I put 20 hours into the game running around, completely missed Margit until I watched another streamer beeline to him and proceed to get pounded for 2 hours. Yeah, hes slightly too brutal for a first boss, especially as an early heavy weapon build. Blocking smacks out your whole stamina bar, he can attack three times in your one swing, armor makes you take 60% hp a hit instead of 80% (still two hits!)
I've had a lot of fun just picking some odd looking thing on the map and seeing what it is, running past anything that I can't kill quickly on my way. There are a lot of caves, dungeons, ruins, some weird puzzle towers, etc. And many of them have much more forgiving bosses that give you some interesting gear or magic or upgrade materials. I'll tackle Margit again when I feel like it. It's kind of like back in DS1 where you just blitzed past enemies just to get a little more info and make more progress towards the next bonfire. Or heading another direction because you realize the cave full of reanimating skeletons is too difficult after just starting the game.

It always absolutely blows my mind when people complain about difficulty in these games. This game has more difficulty sliders than any other souls game ever made.
The starting class and gift options are actually useful
magic is broken in pve just like always
You can summon other players and the game becomes horrendously easy
You can summon npc's with ash who are better than player summons once upgraded.
You can always explore and become over leveled and just come back later. There is never a point where you're forced to win a fight.
The tedious walk of shame back to the boss has been completely removed with checkpoints.
Bows have actually been made pretty strong with weapon arts and you can even start with one.
Armor has been made incredibly effective when optimized so the best answer isn't necessarily to just be naked and roll better.
Guard counters were added so you can be rewarded for turtling and you can even start with a 100% phys mitigation shield.
This game is at all points precisely as hard as you want to make it for yourself. At every step of the way you choose not just how hard you want it to be, but also in what ways it's difficult. You don't have to engage with any of those systems and you'll have a hard time but whenever you struggle you can employ any number of them to succeed.

I feel like the game does a great job making the weapons strong for the strong bosses. Game is very hard but almost all weapons are viable which is awesome.

The uchigatana is a starting weapon and it's also one of the best. All weapons are valid.

on the opposite end, most boss weapons are actually ass since you cant change their properties like regular ones

With this game, you can't put Colossal weapons and viable in the same sentence. The window of opportunity for you to attack with one is basically none in regards to bosses meaning you can't even really charge a heavy attack and therefore get low damage in. Meanwhile, with a weapon like Moonveil it attacks so fast that it does more damage than a colossal sword in the amount of time it takes for a colossal attack to come out that there's not even a dps advantage. Only thing they're good at is staggering enemies, but on bosses, their posture recovers so fast that you can rarely actually break it any faster than moonveil.
I'd say most weapons are balanced, but the slower ones need a lot of work for me to actually use them like I really want to.

I couldn’t beat him, never played any dark souls games. After dying several times, I tried to explore. I ended up running into the dragon. I couldn’t beat him. I then found a swamp boss twenty minutes later. I couldn’t beat him. Then I found a hidden cave. It was cool, but then I got killed 15 times by the 4 wolves. After just over 2 hours of gameplay I had died over 25 times and couldn’t see a path to get stronger. So I fucking quit and got a refund. I play video games every day. All kinds of games.
That being said, I didn’t read any reviews, I didn’t look up ANY tips, I didnt watch any streams. Now the last couple days I’ve watched asmon play through, and I realize I was just playing the damn game wrong. So yes, the game doesn’t teach you SHIT about getting better.
