Miyazaki has stated in an interview that the reason why the Souls series leaves so much plot hidden and requiring discovery, debate, and deciphering, is because he read English fantasy novels as a youth and not understanding the whole story and needing to fill the gaps himself was an experience he wanted players to share.

Thats actually not true, Miyazaki said that in regards to how specific, minor story aspects are left hidden whilst the main plot is straightforward like in demons souls. Ds1 had obscure stuff more so because Miyazaki didnt want to hire a professional story writer (said so in an interview). Yet still, ds1 still had NPCs being extremely not cryptic about the story. ER fails in narrative due to being overly obscure to the point its not clear why my character even cares about being in the lands between in the first place.

On my first playthrough I was a bit confused but I wanted to understand the story. Luckily, there are TONS of characters who will give you some history or talk about the motivations of certain characters. But I was still a bit confused by similar names like Ranni and Renna, Melina and Malenia are good examples. But on my second playthrough, everything made sense. I did watch a youtube video on the history eons before the game takes place, and that is the less important lore hidden in item descriptions. The story of Elden Ring is so interesting, and extremely well written full of betrayal, emotion, loss, and the aspirations of several factions.

Man this video hits close to home - I have abt 3.5k on Doomfist in OW1 and I've been gm/t500 since s10. His unique game-play and the reward you would get out of his mastery was so satisfying and the main reason why I kept grinding the game. I was first concerned, but still intended to play him, whenever they announced Tank Doom would be a thing, but him just being complete dog tier at launch and killing all the intriguing techs us doom players would learn made it really demotivating for me to play. Which makes me really envious, since the majority of people are convinced (including me) that ow2 is a better game overall. I stopped playing during my climb at m1/low gm mmr, because I had enough of the unrewarding gameplay and cancerous community flaming you 24/7 for playing him. I played doom in all the metas at high elo in the past ,no matter the meta, I played it and even back then he was was dogshit in most metas and yet he still had something that made it fun and rewarding to play him , but yes while dooms gameplay is still unique it just didn't keep the fun that made me fall in love with him in ow1. And I know I'm not alone, ik so many OG doom players and high elo dooms and they eighter quit, or play diff characters. - Most who still grind the hero are streamers who probably would've quit the game/hero too if they didn't stream in the first place. :(

The film-milieu would shit their pants if someone would say "Eraserhead (David Lynch, 1977) has no narrative".
Can you imagine the industry of a whole medium safeguarding against art-ification and trying to stay as mainstream as possible? You don't need to. Video Games Industry is doing exactly that.
Idiots like this complaining about elden ring is the reason why well educated and cultured non-gamers have such a hard time grasping the artistic side of video games and have so much misconceptions. Even George R. martin who penned the lore for Elden Ring says "video games" are not art. Because all we do is shout out "fortnite" in the world and show kids wasting away before their PCs shooting.
How can the mainstream video game industry lobby for a more serious take from the general public about video games if it is actively trying to sabotage every artistic game which is trying to bend and shift borders.
I mean look at the movie industry and movie-critiques and film-academics. There is a general unwritten consensus that movies like those who premiere on festivals like Cannes are "better" in almost any way than every movie came out of disney ever. More Art-House , the better.
And here are "our" industry and video game access media trying to critcise exactly that quality in elden ring.

I feel everybody in this comment section and the guy in the video just missed the whole point the game critics were trying to make entirely, which was: If a new player(who has never played the dark souls games) picks up this game to try, Will 100% get lost first time and will 100% need some kind of guidance to progress the game. There’s so many things in the game that confuse the player such as the Warp traps, the arrows(that point to other graces not the main quest), bosses that are easy to find via dungeons that dont matter whatsoever to the main quest line, etc.

Anyone who thinks Fromsoft games have shit stories just don't care enough about the story to look for it. They want an on-rails narrative experience. Which is fine, but that doesn't make alternative methods 'bad'. Some people love the Zelda method of exploring with vague directions, some prefer the Skyrim style with a compass and arrow pointing you where to go and occasionally stumbling on something unmarked. Neither is necessarily better or worse than the other, they're just different.

The thing people miss out mostly is that since it’s an open world RPG, they expect a narrative like all other standard open RPGs.
Elden Ring when it comes to storytelling it’s much much closer to a game like Subnautica.
You gotta explore the massive world that has been built to be explored to get the story and the game.
While it’s good to have story driven games, it has to be said that a lot of world building value and lore details get often lost on a “rush through the main story” kind of playstyle.

God of War is essentially a game built around a story. Yes they have combat and crafting and puzzles and loot, but when you think of God of War you think of the characters and story. The opposite is true for Elden Ring, it’s a story built into a game. As much as I like the hidden lore and themes of Elden Ring, there is no question that the gameplay is what drives that game. Take for instance the quest to help Kenneth Height. When I started that quest I was intrigued at the power dynamic in limgrave. It was interesting that here was a character with property, directly challenging Godrick’s hold on the land. Not only that, he had a legit following of Demi-humans. My mind got excited, thinking I could possibly clear his fort and then help him again reach for more power, and that maybe his Demi-human followers (who I had already spotted fighting with some limgrave soldiers) might become an ally of sorts to me. Maybe I could lead a small brigade of them in an assault on Castle Stormveil. At the very least maybe they wouldn’t continue to attack me when I found a rogue group of them. Sadly none of that was true, and even when visiting the Fort after Kenneth Height moved in I was disappointed to find I had to kill a half dozen Demi-humans inside only for the chance to speak to Kenneth Height and find his quest was on pause until much further into the game. Now, I hope this doesn’t seem like I’m calling Elden Ring bad or that it lacks a story, it’s personally the greatest gaming experience I’ve ever had and I enjoy the lore and worldbuilding that is present in the game (it definitely deserves a narrative nomination). But I do wonder if in the future Fromsoft may consider adding MORE role playing and story significance to their games, because to me it’s the one area where they still seem to lag behind. They already have the greatest gameplay loop in gaming history, if they could add Witcher 3 characters and quests, or God of War visuals and story I don’t see how any other developer could even compete.

Elden Ring is a great game, but lore and story aren't the same thing. The story is " you wanna be Elden Lord, fight strong guys till you are it"
The lore is rich and fascinating.
The "gameplay as narrative" is a good argument, but I'm dubious about it for winning a story award. I do wanna be clear though it absolutely deserves a GOTY nomination.

  • @scottwalker7884

Story and narrative are different. A narrative is the way a story is told. That's why this definition stresses speaking or writing - telling someone a story means that you out the narrative together in such a way as to get the story across. Elden Ring gives you the story pieces and then YOU, THE PLAYER construct the narrative. The narrative forms as you play it. Which is how it should be, because it's a game, not a book or a movie. You form the narrative as you play your version of the game, which is why it will differ from others even though the story always remains the same.

I get the impression that people were mad because the conventional idea of "great narrative" was having a game be a film. Why the fuck should it be that the height of narrative in video games be when they're imitating another medium? Video games have the opportunity to tell stories in ways that no other medium can, it should be embraced. It'd be like wishing movies were as wordy as books even though their greatest strength is being able to show and not tell.

Hell, it took me 3 hours to beat the first "boss" on dark souls 3 but after beating it I felt like I achieved something it was rewarding. Yes the story is vague but that is the point, hell most people play games and couldn't give a shit about the story most of the time I feel like if you gonna play Elden Ring or Dark souls it's for its gameplay and challenging bosses, shout out to the people who have completed the game blindfolded and playing the game with bananas (yes someone has done that) also a little bonus I watched a 7 min video telling me what happened in Avengers Endgame because that whole can of worms is such a confusing story that i don't wanna spend a week watching just to watch 3 spider man movies.

And when you finally DO beat him, he mocks you, saying you won't become a lord regardless, and that he'll make sure you never do.
IF you never died once, and killed him in your first attempt, then these lines hold no meaning.
If you died a couple of times, before finally making him admit you are not to be looked down upon, he compliments you, and you feel like you can actually maybe do it!!

In Elden Ring, the player is an archaeologist in a way, always sorting through the ruins of what was, deciphering notes and piecing together the scraps of evidence in order to figure what happened. The players who are too lazy to do this will be annoyed, while the player who do will be immensely satisfied.
It's the difference between being a Tourist and an Archaeologist at the Pyramids of Giza.
A tourist would simply see the Pyramids and go "Wow, that's cool!", they take their pictures, and they will have a lot of questions, but they will leave without any substantial answers.
An Archaelogist would be exploring inside of the ruins, dusting off the papyrus and deciphering the heiroglyphs in complete awe of the knowledge are discovering and eventually fully uncovering the long lost history of the Egyptian civilization.
Another game that leverages gameplay to tell a story is Fallout: New Vegas. Choice and consequence. The story is yours to tell in New Vegas because the courier is you.
A more dynamic game that leverages gameplay as a tool for storytelling is Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War. Granted, there is an overarching narrative, but that isn't the strength of the game, the incredible Nemesis system is. The Nemesis system basically a massive heirarchy game, chock full to the brim with orcs and ways to interact with them to create entirely unique stories to experience and rivals to fight against, and it does this very naturally throughout the game. I wish more games had this kind of system. The Nemesis system currently has a patent, so that dream is unlikely now. :(
In a more cinematic "traditional" movie sense, Detroit: Become Human does type of thing very well too. It's not linear like you would assume, it has a crazy branching paths narrative that only videogames can tell.
In movies, there is only one way to tell a story. Movies can be as creative as they chronologically wish to be like in, say, Dunkirk or Pulp Fiction, but the story will always be the same every viewing.
God of War 2018 and Ragnarok pursues this single way to tell a story, the way that movies have always done, instead of utilizing the interactive strengths of storytelling that only a videogame could have, and it's such a waste of potential imo.

But to classify the tiny pieces of information the game scatters around and frame it as narrative is not a step i would personally take. If the player is telling the story than the game is not.
Narrative in RPGs for example is often built by the player and not the game. I love the world of D&D, but i would not award it any narrative prizes either. The lack of a fixed narrative doesn't make the game worse, it makes it better. But when the game, the actual product being judged, has little to no inherent narrative, and critics/fans are trying to push the idea that a subjective experience should be considered as one... I understood the story more or less on my first run but I didn't truly understand and piece how everything seemed to fit until my like 3rd clear (I got Godfrey and Malikath confused quite a bit as one is the Lord of the Dead and the other is the wielder of destine death). Now I still play and pay attention to specific things I like to piece together like where the confessor items are and why they may be where you find them (shadow assassins for the 2 fingers). Even though I know sooooo much about the story, there is so much more I can still discover. People really do not understand that just because you can't handle or enjoy a method of storytelling does not mean it doesn't exist. You just don't like it because it's too hard or requires an investment. But almost everything, even crafting materials, have a reason for being where you find them (like the Artaria Leaves, generally found where blood has been spilled, you find a ton around the windmill village cuz the windmills are chalk full of skinned bodies in and around them, thus they grow all around the windmills where the bodies are likely kept before they are burned)

I started to love the way these games explain the narrative the moment i understood a little bit of its huge lore entirely. The flowing chrved sword tells of a blind swordsman, the counterattack tallisman shows a blind swordsman and his headset is the dex starting class set( the blue one with the dual swords) and the dex tallisman tells how malenia was teached by a blind swordsman that seemed to dance as he fought. From those 3 details i was able to piece together something and it felt so great. The absolute payoff is that if you charge a heavy attack with the flowing curved sword, the weird sleeves on the blue swordsman set piece combine with its weird design, making 2 hearts for a brief second. Amazing storytelling. Understanding the lore midgame itself is souls like, because you get all these different topics and the items that you get(sometimes hours in between) explain you a little bit of 1 of the topics, so you get a feeling like in ds1, where you have 10 different ways to go and dont even know where to start

Taking the time and putting the effort into understanding how the gameplay works is rewarding and saitisfaying.
Taking the time to read all the item descriptions and putting the effort to try to connect the dots rewards you with a better understanding of what's going on and therefore gives you more freedom to make the decision you actually believe are right.

Calm TL;DR before the rant: my impressions of the games sucked and the ports were lazy. "Just buy a controller" is not an acceptable explanation for your pc port not having basic pc ui design.
That learning curve is enjoyable for some. Elden Ring and Fromsoft in general I have an axe to grind with. I need a hook to get me interested in a game. The brutality of elden ring and the struggle appears to be the fun that people get from it, and the promised satisfaction of getting gud. For me it's a headache. Compound that with a slew of design decisions I think are objectively bad and you get me, someone who has an extreme dislike of anything by that company.
Broken controls on the port to pc that have out of whack sensitivity settings and an overlay as if you're using a controller. That's just lazy. Porting a game is hard, but lack of ui and input clarity when doing so is simply incompetence.
My impression is that Fromsoft prides itself in obtuse design for the sake of difficulty, rather than fun, markets it to the hardcore audience, and then the community that struggled through that has developed and elitist git gud mentality.
For me, the mountain to climb of the skill-curve combined with poor design choices and the answer to "when does it become fun?" are one and the same.
I recognize that people love the games, and they do look pretty. But actually playing them is not very fun at all for some people.
The strange thing is, the community seems to have acquired a mentality of "mad bcuz bad" for any criticism regarding difficulty of "finding the fun" or "learning the game". A "Fromsoft is infallible and any attack on them is an attack on me". That's been my experience, at least. The DS franchise sits in my steam library, untouched. And so it shall stay. A regrettable investment and reminder of what could have been...if they had ported anything properly and cared enough about the meaning of a "pc release". Ranty, I know. Axe to grind, as I said.

Yes, there's still room for theory as to what happened in the 1000 years since Hora Loux was kicked out of the Lands Between and his return, but really the major plotline is immediately revealed and there's no difficulty in piecing together the story. The Dark Souls story isn't hard to understand at all though. For most people, they meet Frampt and he literally tells you everything about linking the fire. Before that, the chainmail guy will tell you all about ringing the bells. Before that, Oscar tells you about the chosen undead prophecy. That is the "story" of the game and it's very simple to follow. The background lore and greater context of the story is more likely to be missed. I played through Elden Ring once and got Ranni's ending, and I have 0 fucking idea who anyone was or what was happening. I came into the game with no idea who my character was or why I should be trying to do anything. Why are we in that lonely island at the start? Why do we get ported to the mainland when we die there? Does our character have any agency outside of helping the maiden because she asked and we have nothing better to do? The game is filled with some cool moments and lore, but the actual "story" is very weak and disjointed.

I believe elden ring certainly deserves to win, but it doesn't detract from how incredible God of war is as well. If anything, the gamers win for having such incredible games to choose from than one clear winner. They both deserve the accolades, one being great doesn't make the other bad. Just because it's not for you, doesn't mean it holds no weight. They're both beautifully crafted art pieces and you don't have to like both, but it doesn't mean one is objectively superior. It's subjective when you say ones better, because different people like different things. I personally dont play Souls games for the story or narrative, but sometimes i do enjoy watching my VaatiVidya video about the games lore from time to time. But here is the thing about piecing together the story and lore via item descriptions. I think this style of narrative worked well for the other Souls games as they were relatively short. Looking for all item descriptions in Elden Ring would be obnoxiously tedious, because the game is simply way too huge for that. I bet 99% of the player base didnt bother to get all items in the game to piece together the lore. If thats an achievement you can get by investing a couple of hours, then sure, but not if you porobably have to spend a 100 hours on it. I`m not saying that Elden Ring should have opted more for cutscene style story, but they could have added more character dialogue which explains some things. Sir Gideon was already a great info dump character. They could have put even more focus on that.

It feels like those who hold Elden Ring close to their heart do not want to admit the cons or flaws such type of narrative has, immediately attributing to "naysayers" to laziness.
By not holding the player's hand and allowing it's players to figure out or create the narrative themselves is an option that Fromsoftware has chosen, it has it's benefits as when someone tries to figure out the answer themselves rather than being told, they tend to remember and enjoy the answer more as it took time and effort to achieve, but at the same time it can push away anyone else whose the story doesn't grasp enough to make them put in the time and effort for the answer.
To me, the fact that the majority of the player-base resorts to YT lore videos that explain the story to them is indicative of one of the flaws of this type of narrative design, regardless of how good one may consider it to be.

You can figure out the story by yourself if you try hard, a game is supposed to be challenging and rewarding, Elden Ring is, is you want to watch youtube lore or guides then go ahead, but it diminishes the experience.
Now the game is already huge, so if you get 20 hours in limgrave for 60$ then can't find any other region then you already got more than most games deliver. If you miss Placidusaax then who cares you got your money's worth, but there are more rewards with more challenge (exploration, etc.) And this is a good thing.

You don't need to think of "pushing someone out" because from the start you can't even get everyone in on the greatest stories and poems in this world lmao sometimes some story require more thinking than just feeling the story. Based of feeling GOWR like a good story capture feelings while ER is like a series of Poem or Haiku that you need to understand through context. On Elden Ring, they want you to feel the story to have holes and for you to go and search for answers, maybe theorize them on your own, but the vast majority of the player-base does not do that, and that can be considered one of it's flaws in it's storytelling process.

For me I think it is of passing interest and some form of aid to quest completion or item collecting perhaps. Its almost like ambient music. Unnoticed potentially but a less rich experience if it was missing. Now my little girl (6) who also plays, has her own story.. I'm getting to the golden tree!! She saw that when she first stepped into the open world and it has been her guiding star all the way through the game ever since (is now at the capital-though I did the big bosses for her). She knows the names of major characters and where she/we encountered them but I doubt she could recount any back story other than they were a Boss or perhaps a god(demi). I probably could though to some degree, like I know Millicent is connected to Malenia somehow. Do I know all the story? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. Perhaps next time something else will come up. After playing I found lore videos and learned how wrong I was about everything lol. Then made my next playthrough that much better when I found out why things are happening.

The story is good cause the player is the story. You experience it first hand not told to you or given. You character finds the clues and puts the pieces together. Like a trip to Italy. You put your narrative together based on you trip. Each trip is similar on the plane ride but once you land “your” story begins.

@@MR_IceBlood Think about it like this: Its an RPG, so imagine youre not a player behind a monitor. Youre actually the character. You wake up from the dead in a dying world. god knows for how long youve been dead and you have no idea what to do or what your purpose is. So, out of curiosity, you... do shit I guess. Because what else are the people in the world supposed to do. You kill some big bad dudes, some characters tell you something interesting, maybe straight up some history or story of something specific and if youre interested and want to know more, you can explore more and read item descriptions, thanks to which youre able to understand the story of the world more and you can think of some theories for yourself, and then if you want you can confirm them by watching YT or something. Its immersive, the game wants you to feel like youre actually the character that doesnt know anything, and neither does the player. I prefer this story telling compared to the other more mainstream story telling where the character doesnt really know anything and then the player gets a popup where it explains everything for you. Curiosity is one of the main aspects in these games. You search for answers and you get them but you also get more questions, which then makes you more curious again and the cycle continues. You said theres no specific story that you follow but instead just lore. Thats sort of true. I think of it more like the the other dude said. the lore IS the story, you dont follow a story in the present, because, lets be real, in that world, completely shattered and almost lifeless, there isnt really any story to have anymore. Everything already happened, so youre just finding out about the story of the other important characters. Its mostly their story first and then your story second. They are literal legends, they have churches, cathedrals and followers. You just... woke up from a big nap, nobody takes you seriously at first, but after some time, you will find out what your true purpose is and you will realise that your actions have much more impact than you can imagine. There is a story, it might be obscure, but its there. Youre pretty much just given a goal. "Become Elden Lord". And then its up to you if you actually care enough to learn about why you should be Elden Lord or if become Elden Lord is the right thing to do. Or if youre just lazy and dont care about any of it, you can just do whatever the game tells you and get it over with.

I vastly prefer the storytelling in elden ring.
I think many other games have these linear ways of telling you the story where you basically just walk down a path, beat enemies in between and the main characters or narrator tell you the whole story. These type of games often make me think I could as well just watch all the cutscenes and dialogues instead of playing the game. That doesn't mean these games have bad stories, in many cases their stories are great, I just don't think that super linear path is an engaging way to tell a story.
I love all the mysteries about elden ring. Not knowing what exactly is going on, not knowing who you can trust, finding small cues about bigger events that happened in that world etc. It's just such an interesting way of telling a story and even if you don't end up having all your questions answered, it is an incredible experience.

To me Elden Ring is the greatest game since Skyrim and Witcher 3. It is one of the greatest games ever. And definitely the most important game of the last decade. Elden Ring gave me a series of worlds to adventure and explore in. It chastised me for my failures, and it rewarded me for my succesess. I could craft my character any way i wanted and still be viable and find success. I had to learn and memorize the map locations, i had to seek and search, and explore the entire world. I had to overcome great challenges and set backs when up against a wall like Margit, and the Giant with two swords and the little horse, Malenia, and the final boss fight. I communicated with other players around the world and helped them find secrets as they in turn helped me. Sometimes I trolled, and sometimes I was trolled. I had to be present and focused at all times to ensure not falling off an edge, or being instantly killed by a random enemy. I was able to put down my sigil and travel to other players games and help them defeat the hardest bosses in the game over and over and over hundreds of times so that they could defeat their impossible challenges too. Playing Elden Ring was like playing Zelda the first time back in the 80's on the original Nintendo. Or Skyrim, or the Witcher 3. Elden Ring belongs to a select few of the greatest games ever made. It's a masterpiece. It's far beyond the scope, and understanding of any modern game since Witcher 3.

I still think GoW ragnorok still had a better narrative, that game invokes actual feelings in its story telling and dialog, while Elden Ring has a more abstract way of story telling where even when you have all the descriptions, you still have to interpret their meanings and invision the actual events yourself.

There's one big problem I have with Elden Ring's narrative: The quests. Completing the quests is next to impossible without a guide, and some even have you able to skip steps, like Ranni's quest line. The NPCs are a big part of the worldbuilding, and you can meet one and never see them again for the rest of the run, or run into them much later after you skipped various steps.
Compared to the Souls games (Anri's quest not included: That's just as obscure as your standard Elden Ring quest line) where NPCs would just show up in your path, you're missing out on a lot of interesting stories purely because you don't know where they went, nor how to progress.
Outside of that, Elden Ring has fantastic world building and narrative. I like GoW: R's story more just because I really love the characters, but Elden Ring is also great in this regard, in a different way.
