      I have an X100s and I want to use shutter speeds lower than 1/4 second which is the slowest speed on the shutter speed dial. The owner's manual says to select the shutter speed T and use the command dial to select slower shutter speeds. I tried this and I must be doing something wrong. After selecting T, the back display on the camera shows a shutter speed of 5 seconds. When I move the command wheel the shutter speed remains the same but the f/stop changes. This is not what I want to do. I would like to select shutter speeds from around 1/2 second to 10 seconds. How do I do this? Do I need to change any other settings besides the T setting? My camera is the X100s so it only has a rear command wheel. Thank you.

    Bonjour Thierry, je tente de prendre des photos du ciel étoilé. Le problème est pour faire la mise au point avec mon X-T4. C'est impossible à cause de la "friture' (the noise) sur l'écran ou même dans le viseur. C'est acceptable sans agrandir, mais les étoiles sont trop petites - alors j'ai mis en mode manuel et l'image agrandit (zoom de 8-10x aprox) aussitôt qu'on tourne la bague de focus. Mais je ne voit que du bruit digital multicolore. En passant, je n'avais pas ce problème avec mon vieux Canon 5D MKII.

    As someone with OCD, how do i use an nd filter without obsessing over tiny particles of dust? It seems that everytime i use one, i can't seem to get it perfectly clean! Its annoying!

    • @ThierryGibralta
      @ThierryGibralta  23 дня назад

      I do not have OCD but a little blower is your best friend in this case. It helps a lot to get dust out of the way and you can blow the dust quite regularly without wasting too much time.

    Awesome introduction to long exposure 😎👍👍 to the point without any fluf. Personally I don't do enough long exposure shots, but I try to squeeze one here and one there whenever possible.
    Just throwing an idea in the air, if you have the time and enjoy doing live tutorials, it would be awesome to have a livestream on the field showing in practice how to videos. Even if not live, a practical video on location with examples of "overdoing it", "underdoing it", and "just about right" would probably be highly appreciated by new learners. Just brainstorming 😁 you never know if it may inspire you to something 🤣👍👍

      So it is not mandatory especially in low light as your exposure might be good with a slow shutter speed. However if you are aiming to get long trails of lights you might need it

    Very good video, but I have a question (or more). I understand that if I’m using a fixed ND filter (3, 6, 10 stops) there are apps that will tell me what shutter speed I need for a correct (or balanced) exposure, how do I know how many stops I’m using on an adjustable ND filter and if I am at the maximum density, will the camera be able to give me a histogram reading or even be able to focus.

    • @williamaungleyraud
      @williamaungleyraud 2 года назад

      So long exposure shots are a process of trial and error to some degree. So in short yes you'll still be able to take a histogram reading, but remember, the longer the exposure = the slower the shutter speed, the more "bright" or exposed your shot will be. So you'll have to be careful with your highlights, and/or sometimes your shadows even depending on the look you're going for.
      Will your camera be able to focus? In short yes, but it depends, most cameras may struggle a little the darker the environment becomes. So there may be times where you'll want to manually focus on your subject, than letting the camera do it. Again, it's a trial and error deal.
      And you'll only ever want to use a nd filter in already low light conditions IF you really want to gather light for longer for whatever artistic reason.
      The PhotoPills app is one of the most comprehensive apps for photographers, it goes for a one time purchase if you're on Android, probably the same for iPhone. It is a worthy investment of you plan to venture into the photography hobby, it covers so many different aspects of photography.
      The app you'll give you a base to what settings you should set your camera given the target photography you want to take, but the more you play with your settings the more know-how experience you'll earn 😎👍
      I hope this information can be helpful 😁📷

    • @ThierryGibralta
      @ThierryGibralta  2 года назад +1

      A variable ND filter has graduations and is marked to some specific values so you can also look at that.
      Even if you at maximum density, the camera will be able to give you a read out, as if you need to be at maximum density, it means that you will receive enough light for your exposure to be correct at this state. If you don’t receive enough light, your histogram will shoe data only in the far left, which you would want to avoid.
      When using a fixed ND, you will need to make more adjustments on your aperture too to make sure that you can achieve the desired shutter speed. Remember that your shutter speed here is your most important parameter in that case and because you have a fixed ND, you should actually set it first and adjust other parameters around it.
