Agree with everything said...but as a Sri Lankan I would also like to point out that during the past 70 years most politicians made it a point to bankrupt local productions just so they could import foreign goods with personal comissions. And the Rajapaksa family took it to the next level by doing the same but at such a rate that the country went bankrupt within just a few years since they came to power. Their foreign accounts grew in trillions while the country's economy plummeted. They are nothing more than a bunch of uneducated war criminals who came to power by spreading racism. And the saddest of all is that people still voted them into power.

I will never understand how countries continue to put themselves in the situation of not FIRST making sure its population makes enough food to feed itself before anything else. As they used to say, 'A hungry man is an angry man'
An excellent, detailed and succinct report which, for some reason, makes no mention of probably the strongest factor in this whole situation and a disease not just restricted to Sri Lanka - the rampant corruption and sheer incompetence of modern politicians.
If you want to destroy a country, give them free stuff for 10 years and then watch the country going bankrupt and less secure due to weak defence budgets.

As a citizen of SL, I see that the cause for rise of these problems is that the country doesnt have good media. People weren't aware how cunning Rajapaksha's was untill now. Rajapakshas have been in power for more than 10 years and all they did was stealing and stealing. Not a single media tried to make people aware about these things. Good they privatized it. Giving free means taking money from taxpayers to fund it. We can't sustain it for long. Punjab announced 300unit of power free for all houses even the ones who can pay, is this sensible? Eventually you are making all people lazy. Iam working now , if the government announces food water electricity free do you think I will continue working? If everyone follows the same path where will the money come from. . As for education and medicine it's called subsides education and medicine nt free. When I did my master I too got it, it's cheap education loan at low interest. I had to work and pay off later. Now I work in India and pay tax every year. Please don't make people lazy by saying everything free without any criteria.
