Could that be the ultimate grief, the server is effectively dead to new players if spawn is essentially non-existent. Until the blessed Hausmaster fixes it.
If a Vanilla Minecraft server does not find a good place to spawn within spawn range, it will give up and spawn the player at 0 0 0, no matter if it falls into the void. Not sure if the same happens on paper.

The bedrock "comet" is actually a recreation of the black marker from the dead space franchise, a artifact of alien origin, that mutates and controls dead tissue and alters the minds of the living for its own purposes. Spoiler: They pretty much kill entire planets worth of lifeforms to form a large singular necromorph called a brethren moon. Then launch more black markers to repeat the process
Something that this reminded me of is that if/when 2b2t updates to/beyond 1.18 is that these bedrock holes will continue all the way down through Y=-64 due to one of the changes in the prereleases! The retrogen of caves below 0 was tweaked to not happen unless there are blocks at Y=0, so with exposed void, it will continue downwards through the world to the new void layer.
The chunks where the bedrock were broken were loaded before the cave update so even with the update to y= -64 the terrain in that place wouldn't change. That's just a suposition, im not sure.

Hause has been known to occasionally turn on and off the bedrock fixing plugin. He only ever turns it on when there is serious amounts of nether roof/floor breaking so this video might get it turned on again. Might not be a bad idea to go and try to expand a hole in the nether roof and unload the chunk before this happens for future use.

I would expext, that Minecraft already contains a solution to that situation. You would provably just spawn at the nearest fitting position.
A cobblestone monster can undo all the work of creating a void spawn very easily.

Some other game companies might make a feature like that deliberately so void holes aren't canon, but not Mojang.

Why would they do that? i get they are illegal items, but they are such big peices of server history, and relics of famous players like Popbob, iTristan, etc.

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't want to make it a secret when breaking all that bedrock, digging out entire chunks just to expose the void instead of digging underground. Heck, if anything, they probably lost a lot of bedrock falling in rather than claiming it. Not to mention constantly falling into the void by accident.
They might have lost obsidian, but not bedrock. The portal breaking method does not create items.
