As a history teacher, the Vikings and the "ancient" world in general, prioritized the value of having children (especially if it's within the line of the family) to prolong the family line. Ragnar was angry at his son because of yes, his son's stupidity to bring his partner into battle while she was pregnant. Ragnar was very much more angry at the fact that the child that's not born yet is Ragnars legacy for the future to carry on the name. It's still true to this day for some fathers. But very much important for royal families.

Dumb decision #1: Letting Porunn fight in battle
Dumb decision #2: Letting Rollo stay behind in Paris
Dumb decision #3: Arresting Floki even though it was clear that if Ragnar wanted that he would have done already.
Dumb decision #4: Leaving the great army behind while Ivar was obviously shooting for power and conquest, leading to him having to flee Norway and losing Kategat.
