I love the villain vs villain trope. We always see the good guys trying to avoid conflicts or risking themselves to help others. But here, we see two ruthless leaders ready for blood and casually sending their pawns to their deaths.
Only a true villain could name their son Scrotus.
Yeah, really underused movie trope, wish we had more. It’s like seeing two sharks trying to size each other up before all hell breaks loose.

They way they play Dementus here is great. Confidence vs competence. Also all the hooks being used as both weapons and looting... this movie was so great
Exactly my mindset watching this movie ...
Immortan Joe is actually a brilliant leader and organizer. The system and alliances he has going are actually impressive. To me Furiosa and Mad Max fall into the category of chaos. They are not heroes. The audience perceive them as heroes or anti-heroes but they aren't. People like Imortan Joe can bring mankind back not Mad max or Dementus. Dementus is just a mad dog marauder on the prowl on the search of abundance he didn't create.
@@TemplarX2 Joe's a fascist for sure - he sexually enslaves women as breeders and milkers, creates mindless drones to commit suicide on a whim, he's somehow both wasteful and stingy with how he doles out water to the people in deep poverty below. I think Furiosa's a hero - especially in Fury Road. That whole group from Max to Nux to the women from the green place and the runaway brides themselves work together to overthrow him. And those women who were being milked like cattle - the first thing they do is share water with the people below.
I feel as if this story led to a bigger one where people just needed a sign of hope to take action themselves. I likened Fury Road to the scene in GOT where Dany frees the slaves. It will be messy on the back end, but in that moment she was a total hero
@@TemplarX2 good comment mate.
@@TemplarX2 Good observation but it still doesn't justify him wasting crap ton of water in fury road. He could have built a proper water distribution system (which furiosa did) instead of spilling all the water on the ground which was enough for the wretched, wasting it.
most of the warboys are still very young. this is probably the early days after immortan joe came up with the cult of v8. very nice detail

Most of the war boys are young cause they never make it past their 30’s. They’re called half life’s cause they’re all already dying of cancer
War Boys in general are young. They are all irradiated, it's why they are "half-lives". They're not expected to live past 20 and only the most resilient (like The Ace in Fury Road) even do. That's okay for them, though, since they expect to go to "Valhalla" if they throw away their lives in a spectacular, "witness"-worthy fashion in service for the Immortan, though.

The world ever ended this is just an average day in Australia
That moment when Furiosa got pulled into Duttos office was a nice detail.
I love how Dementus absolutely sucked as a leader. It was brilliant and so refreshing to see someone who had basically swindled his way to appear a charismatic leader but ended up having no substance to actually lead.
And even "his" good ideas, he had to steal. Like his Trojan Horse play at Gas Town.
He's good at stealing and breaking things, but terrible at actual leadership.
He was a capable tactician and that is ALL he was. Immortan Joe was on a level above him.
@@godking its too bad we never got to see the two fight, or at least have Dementus kill Scrotus since we know he dies before Fury Road anyways
Refreshing? Have you seen (insert any politician ever)?
@@logicplague Of course I have. But most fictional villains are usually super-competent and have some obscure flaw that leads to their downfall.

I like how in the post apocalyptic world, everyone takes a moment to introduce themselves and their friends.

Just like one peice
Only in Australia mate , other places are not so polite.
In ages of war in Japan, swordsmen used to announce their name to each other before a duel to let the other men know who killed them/who is about to get killed by them
Excellent point! Very Homeric! In The Iliad, warriors on both sides would introduce themselves (and give a bit of genealogy) before fighting.
Every Mad Max villain knows how to use microphone.

Now though; He’s a small fish in a big pond, and there’s blood in the water.
And so comes the cold calculating shark of this ocean of sand:
IMMORTAN.
Dementus learns just how small a fish he is after he manages to conquer gas town only to completely run it into the ground from sheer mismanagement.
He's definitely the kind of leader that thrives in conflict when there's a war effort to lead and challenges to overcome. But when it's finally his turn to manage an organized fortress settlement like immortan joe and the citadel, the dude just really sucks at it.

2:57 the guy shouting back always gets me
😂😂😂😂
This is why his army got crushed during the 40 Day Wasteland War. His Biker Horde is only good for attacking small, disorganized and/or undefended targets but not against large, organized foes. He later hedged his bets in taking the Citadel without a shot by trying to fool Joe into attacking Gastown but later ended up had his entire force exposed to the full might of Joe's army instead.
If you ask me, it is remarkable that he managed to last 40 days... I assume he did a lot of hit and run tactics till he simply ran out of men. Either by death or desertion. But still... Props to him.
@@tikarimiekka8048my theory is that the actual war ended in the 1st day. Mad Max movies have an unreliable narrator and stories are heavily romanticised. They get surrounded, Dementus escapes back to Gastown with 1/3 of his bikers, everyone else either escape somewhere else or get killed. And the rest 39 days is just trying to bait Dementus out of Gastown and hunting down rest of the bikers scattered around the area. The battlefield became the place where fallen bikers were collected for salvaging. I believe that History Man, Harley and Davidson (as Harley and History Man were seen alive) sold Dementus out and were able to bait them out.
the warboys all dying hauling shipment was just for narrative, they were missing all their spears from bikers with parachutes ffs even got their v8 hijacked now that was embarrassing should have tripped it like nux did, before that happened but nah.

1:49 like the detail of Smeg correcting the first war boy. Not only adds realism to the confusing choice, but only shows that Smeg really intend to pick someone at random, like avoiding the trick of having an accomplice in the crowd during magic tricks. That level of detail is completely stunning.

The character was featured in the Mad max game Warner brothers made and in there is a wasteland mission where this women called Hope sends you to find a vehicle of a old biker warlord she use to ride with called "Dr Dementus" and when you go to his tomb grave and look on the wall you find drawing of his biker gang raiding Gastown and the 40 day wasteland war its like a spoiler to furiosa-
Scabrous Scrotus and his Apostles of Awful!
He isn’t like his gaming counterpart, but it was nice to see him in the movie.
I haven't played it but the character art for the game seemed a lot more generic wastelander. I'm glad they made him more unique in this
@@Sagittarian1202 In the Mad Max video game Scrotus is more like Ricktus, he's huge but has to wear an oxygen bottle all the time, but he's definitely smarter and crueler than Rictus. I get the feeling Immortan Joe keeps Rictus close at hand because he's not good for much else than being a bodyguard. In the game Scrotus is the general overlord of gastown, attacking all the factions not allied with Joe and wiping out all resistance.
Also the Mad max game is kinda like a spoiler for furiosa cuz it shows the biker warlord dementus already but it’s not canon
Blame WB/Avalanche for that. I love the game, but they just took Miller's notebooks and cobbled their own story up from it. So a lot of things are from like concept designs and what not.

Fun fact Rizzdale Pell (0:39 guy just to the right of Dementus) also plays Immortan Joe in this one
While never really overtly suicidal, Dementus repeatedly throughout the movie demonstrates a suicidal level of overconfidence. You could argue hes just an impulsive gang leader trying to coast by on audacity, but with his conversation with Furioa at the climax i think on some level he wants to die.

It gave me a good chuckle that the war boys wouldn't miss an opportunity to swoop in with the cranes like hungry gulls and loot their motorcycles even in the midst of battle. 😂
4:33 I feel as though this moment is kinda paramount for this movie cuz it displays that even tho Furiosa is nothing more than war spoils for him, he still sees her as his. Not someone to be taken but someone that he sees value in. He may not know the full value of her but he still recognizes it is there and this is seen later in his negotiations with Immortan Joe
Can we appreciate that George Miller actually incorporated Scabarus Scrotus from the Mad Max game. This universe is fully of crazy villain names…
I love that the Warboyz and the Citadel shows their true power in this movie, and that they didn't surrender to Dementus. That would damage the concept we have since Fury Road; even better, this shows how HARD was to Furiosa, Max, the wives and the Many Mothers to fight againts them.
i'm confused, is Dementus saving Furiosa because he "cares" about her, or, does he really like blood sausages?
He raised her as a daughter, likely to take over his legacy. Plus the whole "pure child" thing is extra precious so he clearly sees her as an investment. Later on he's right because in trading he cashes her in as part of negotiations to get gas town.
@@tanadarko6991 dementus is opportunistic. i think, in his own twisted mind, he cares about her.
He's hoping that she'll still lead them to The Green Place eventually.
Dementus had a daughter who was killed. Throughout the whole film there are moments where Dementus is seriously struggling not only with the loss of his family but also the new status quo of this world.
I think Furiosa simply represents everything he lost.
I thought he kept her around as weird fucked up way to cope with the loss of his family, even if it was only subconsciously. Like he obviously didn’t treat her like a real daughter but it was clear that Furiosa reminded him of her somewhat.
He also seemed genuinely hurt by her “choice” to stay with Joe at the citadel when he snatched the teddy bear he gave Furiosa back as if he were an immature child.
Like he was using Furiosa to fill a void inside him that could never be replicated again by anyone other then his real daughter, but he kept Furiosa around just to even feel a fragment of that “stability” from his old life, when it was just him and his family.
4:00…..Oye….quite stealin’ me wizard!
Dementus, who is a man, attacks the citadel
Albeit foolishly and lost a chunk of his men but I digress.
I just realized the couple that tried to drag Furiosa into that hole was the same couple that tried to rot her later in the film
Actually there’s a theory they were trying to save her from dementus here and they were actually healing her arm when she was taken into their cave due to maggots actually being a very good way to clean a wound
They put maggots in Furiosa's wound to prevent it from becoming gangrenous and probably wanted to adopt her.
I feel like they wanted to adopt her because of how “Untouched” aka healthy she looked, hoping she could get them a spot on the top in the future.
Love how Dementus is an amazing Warchief, but a shitty leader.
The wasteland can be glad, he and Immortan met each other as adversaries.
Dementus in the field and Joe in the citadel would have been a sight to see!
I`m sure Dementus is an amalgamation of the Toecutter and Lord Humungous. He has the musclebound physique and mic skills of Humungous. And the motorcycle and whistling abilities of Toecutter
I just realized that the War Boy who showed Dementus’ gang the Citadel was the one trying to bring up the bike Furiosa was caged in.
