I get the Juanita's menudo all the time and I always hate having to dig out the bottom of the can... I found that sitting it on the kitchen counter in the sunlight for a few minutes and then shaking the daylights out of it helps to get it out completely. I also add a bay leaf/garlic/onion to mine as well and some chipotle powder, but I also do add more hominy since I love it so much!!!

    • @HDBee

I put the can on the low burner on the lowest setting, flip it every 10 seconds top to bottom. When it sounds like it’s all turned to liquid when you shake it, it’s ready to open. Don’t put it on the burner, go do something else and forget about it or you will be trying to clean the red stain off of everything in your kitchen.

Menudo is pricey? Maybe in the USA i guess? Here in Mexico is pretty affordable. I usually make a decent sized pot and freeze into portions so I can have a bowl whenever I want. But I get people buying the canned kind, cooking this dish from scratch is such a hassle, especially when you make your own hominy 😅

Love Juanita's canned menudo. Usually do diced onion with fresh cilantro and seeded/diced serrano or jalapeno with lime juice as a fresh salsa garnish. That and warm buttered corn tortillas and I am good to go. For breakfast I'll poach a couple eggs in the broth with the lid on after turning off the heat. Juanita's canned pozole is really good as well.

    • @oldschoolfunkster1

@@BrooklynnTae32 ... It's really an acquired taste due to the stomach (honeycombed) tripe ingredient. I love the flavor, but still can't eat much of the tripe. Slimy and sometimes tough to chew.
The closest I can explain of the flavor is like a beef stew with a dry chili (not hot at all) base. The hominy is a processed corn product (maize) which has a very mild corn flavor.
I much prefer posole, which has about the same ingredients as in menudo, but instead has small chunks of pork shoulder instead of the tripe.
I would start with a dish of posole first before you go directly to menudo.

I do the same! A small local restaurant here in AZ serves it on weekends with a small container of the spice mix plus a baggie with fresh cilantro and chopped onions plus some small lime halves and a toasted bollilo. It's pricey at $10 a quart so sometimes I just buy the Juanita brand and add my own seasoning. They are very similar in flavor and I don't get the random bone sometimes found in the restaurant version. Great video ☺️

I was just eating as is out of the can, but it was just missing something. So I add in more hominy, MORE TRIPE (I love me some tripe), bay leaf, Mexican oregano, lime, fresh cilsntro, fresh onion and seasonings. I always have 3 cans of it in my pantry. Love it. Now I don't feel so guilty about it.

OK, I'm English - What the devil is MENUDO, or HOMINY Angelica? I've never eaten them, and never seen either food for sale in our big British supermarkets or smaller grocery stores. I guess it's a Mexican cuisine?
I just Googled both - Menudo is said to be a soup made from cow's stomach. Hominy is presumably a carbohydrate made from dried Maize/corn kernels that takes the place of pasta/rice/potatoes in savoury dishes? I learned something new!
Interesting video, but I'm baffled as their taste/appeal, never having tried them. I'd happily give them a go, but even if I tracked down these exotic canned products (most likely through Amazon, which has some unusual foods/ingredients from far-flung locations), the price would inevitably be extortionate.
So sadly, this would not be a wallet-friendly food option here in the UK. With the cost of living crisis biting us harder each month, we're trying to find recipes using cheap but nutritious and tasty ingredients - and the least fuel to cook them!

Mmmmm...great!!! idea for doctoring that canned menudo I've often bought and have liked(I slowed down buying it since the price has gone up so much more this past year...like everything else.) I knew it needed "something." Now I know! Menudo & your "fixin's", plus diced onion, cilantro, a squeeze of fresh lime, along with corn tortillas wrapped around thick slices of queso fresco.( Or maybe a barbacoa taco...YOWSA!) Yep...sounds like Sunday breakfast for this viejo Tejano tomorrow. 😀 ¡ Gracias !
