Great definitions! The repetitive negative thoughts and feelings are what fuel the depression.

I agree too. I like the idea of "Eathing the elephant one bite at a time" as they say and dismantling the fog of depression. Personally, I think that depression is more a symtom of life imbalance than chemical imballance in most people (myself included).

I have witnessed many people totally turning around themselves at the Option Institute - a woman who was sexually abused as a child went (in one week) from looking heavy laden, sad, depressed to holding her shoulders back and smiling - while being real about what happened. It's really quite amazing.

Thank you for this video. I believe this is probably the best definition of depression I have ever come across.

If any of us could step in at the moment of the rape or car accident and have the ability to stop it from happening, we certainly would. However, it has already happened. At the present moment, with that event in the past, we still have a full range of choices about how we want to live today. We can choose, moment by moment, to focus on all the things there are in our lives that are wonderful-or at least “good enough.”

The rape or the car accident certainly colored our experience for a brief part of our life, but it is our choice to let it color the rest of our years-or to choose a different focus and move forward with that new perspective. Many people eventually get to a place where they are grateful for that unwanted event because of the ways it opened up their lives for new intentions, new focus, new appreciation. It may take some digging to find the benefits of the situation, but it is well worth the dig.

Being present and in the moment can help you realize the futility and illusion of depression.

My guess is,,,,That he has never been depressed...or to the point that its overwhelming..and a strugggle to live or want to live with the thought that in your mind that "to me" you can't controll,,,I have tried therapy and medications,,,and after going through medications problems,,never finding an antidepressant I could tolerate...Dr. just give up on you...or thats my situation...Its a struggle everyday,,,every hour and completely drains my energy to try and keep myself focused

I'm sorry but what if someone was raped, or left paralyzed by a major car accident. Wouldn't that then make them depressed, or as he puts it "unhappy" The things he gave as example's are things that people "can" change. No one asks to be raped or hit by a car. With that It's not something that can be "drilled" to get to the bottom of it. Something like that will need intensive support all focusing in the victim. As a situation like that can lead to other mental health problems.
