All of my drawing is free - hand. It is harder to gain accuracy in likeness I think but you are not reliant on grids or tools except your eyes and pencil or charcoal. I make relative measurements like eye width to distance from chin to nose etc. I'm getting better and getting better likeness. It is difficult though. Cheers.

Thank you for this video! I've always drawn with grids and tools and it made me hate drawing after a while, so I've started drawing freehand, and it's so much more interesting this way. I tried starting from the eye, and ran into trouble with relative positions and proportions each time. Next time I will try starting from the nose or the ear to get more useful information about how large everything else in the drawing should be. Very helpful tip!

I've been drawing free hand since last year and I don't know what's happening to me sometimes. It's just I suddenly forgot how to do a free hand or something like that. There are times like that. Since I'm still studying and overwhelmed by school works and other stuffs drawing was my escape. I draw every night and I'm pretty sure I'm getting good at it but there really times where I don't know what happened to my free hand skills lol. I hope I'm not the only who feel this way. I'm self study artist and I'm gonna watch a tutorial now to pick up some tips.

Just left a comment on another video about how I share your "unusual" style of drawing. It said how, since it is so rare, I always saw people doing it differently, so I thought I was doing it "wrong" until I found your videos today. Then I watch this one where you go into more detail about this unique style and give tips on how to make this style work better for you...which is so immensely helpful! You have no idea! Thanks again.

I think I am going to try this. I think it might be actually easier to find the correct placements for all the facial feature in the face as in this example the ear can be used as the fleeing point or the point of origin, and then you would automatically have the correct size for the nose etc.

Awesome vids. I think it just takes a ton of practice for your visual measuring to become more accurate.. not sure how else to describe it. I have an endless stack of horrible drawings and portraitures... always it came down to measuring the distance between 2 things inaccurately. Over time, that got resolved and was able to start drawing realistically without much effort

I draw freehand because that is what drawing is. If you rely in the grid you'll get use to it , and dont know what to do without it. Grids also can make the brain confused as you are focus with the lines not with the energy of the subject. My advice is to focus first on the shapes.. just add the details later... study proportions and always draw from life.

I read this tip somewhere so i'm not sure if it works but its worth the try. I read that if you draw free hand from a reference you can then measure each line you have drawn and then compare it to your reference to see how accurate you were. I think this could really train your eye and let you realise how far off you actually are. Just something i saw hope it helps! :D

Holy crap i just realized thats what i do and apparently it is a "really unusual way to draw"! Actually im trying to find new ways even though this is what i naturally do....because when i make a mistake in proportions that means by the time i find it i can be already many hours of work in and kinda sour about having to start over. I am going to try and see if i can get comfortable with outlining first instead.

What do you think of using one of those hand gloves made of fabric that covers one or two of the fingers that touch the page? have you tried one? Also I see you Never use your finger to smudge - yes I know that fingers have oil on them. Do you use any other tools for creating really smooth gradients? I am trying to get out of the habit of smudging with my finger it's not easy to do as I have not found anything that gives the same smoky effect.

Well, I have! to see some details on the reference better.
But then all of a sudden I noticed that I drew these details bigger than the rest! - like a tiny bird with a beak much too large!)
It's a shame, for the mgnfy-glass is really a great help for my eyes!
