My short term memory: The important tips from this video
My long term memory: I am Bob
i literally just laughed at this for 2 minutes straight._.
same
so true
dang,, if this ain’t me
I guess you are not a Dave...
1. Deconstruction.
Don't just copy what you draw, it will only go into your short term memory and get overwritten later. Analyze it. Break it down into simple shapes, bones, muscles, and etc. Understanding what you're studying is half the process towards effeciancey.
2. Recall.
Without using any sort of referance, including your previous sketchs, draw it again from memory. This will force you to think about what you are drawing. Repetition also a key factor in improving knowledge.
3. Criticism and Self-Critique.
Review what you have made and see where you need work. Maybe have someone else review what you made as well. Rinse and repeat steps 1-3.
4. Breaks and Quality Sleep.
Sleep is insanely important towards having a healthy mind... so keep that in mind!
Also, the average adult tends to have a shoter attention span of roughly 30 to 20 mins. If your studying for two hours, break it up with 2 to 5 min breaks inbetween sessions. Your brain is like any other muscle. It needs periodic rest. So don't cram up all your free time with one thing.
5. Eliminate distractions and Multi-tasking
I've always had a bad habit of doing this. Turn off distractions. No youtube. No instagram, and no Warhammer 40k audiobooks playing in the background. Maybe some non-intrusive music or white noise/rain in the background is fine. YOU ARE STUDYING. You don't see people playing Ultrakill while trying to watch John Wick in the background, do ya? Unless they are deliberately showing off.
6. Final notes:
All of this doesn't just apply to drawing effectly, but towards learning overall. I already knew some of this type off a free coursera course... but I didn't really apply it very well. :I
now that you’ve mentioned the most hyperactive attention span destroying video game that happens to be imo the best fps ever made I AM NOT gonna be studying well ☠️
Helped a lot
You are a life saver thankss
THANK YOUUU, the way OP described it was confusing to me, this helps a lot!!!
My problem is I don't know how to out my ideas on paper. It's so frustrating and when I try I end up making some whack off drawing. I see my friend who's only been drawing from 2 weeks make a EXCELLENT goku, without reference, while I've been drawing since 3 and I'm still dogwater. I need some help on what to to here!

I was the 420th like. lmao
Thanks, I didn't want to watch a whole vid, but what are points 1, 2 & 5? Can someone elaborate a bit? Deconstruction? Is that analysing things to see how better to draw them, or is it looking at other artists pics to figure out how they do something? If so, I do that already. Recall? I take it this is just trying to remember your mistakes, to avoid them in future, or is it? Spaced Repetition? Is this just a regimental routinw mindset thing like "Gonna draw everyday at 5:45 PM sharp for 3-4 hours" or "Gonna draw only in 1 hour sessions with 20 min breaks, all day" (like weight training regimes). If so I do something kinda similar, I just draw everyday for hours & hours but never set a time, or duration.
FOR ANYONE WHO HAS ADHD LIKE I DO: what can be considered "multitasking" for some can simply be our way of regulating our level of stimulus in order to focus on a specific task. for example, I always have an easier time drawing when I am listening to music or listening to audiobooks. I am able to cope with the difficult task of keeping my mind on the art. I find this helps my memory retention as well, so much so that I can often look at a sketch or drawing I've done and the song or video I was watching at the time pops back into my head!
Every brain is different. Good sleep, taking breaks, and deconstruction are all wonderful methods for my ADHD brain, but my "multitasking" is my way of regulating my stimulus levels to properly focus. Your way may be different. Try to determine when you're most focused and why that could be, and find what helps for you!
Thank you so much! This definitely helped a lot because often to even be able to sit down and do art I have to tell my brain it can also do something else for it to even let me pick up the pencil.

@@dms2331 SAMEE
Me, an intellectual : 25 day break after 1 minute of work
How I learned to draw, was using references.
When I first started, I would go through Pinterest, and copy drawings that look cool.
I would not directly trace it, instead, use foundations, and simplify it into simple rectangles and circles.
Then I would put details in.
I would do this when I was bored, but made sure to do this at least once a day
This could be copying down pokemon, fun animals, people in fun poses, hands, etc etc.
Then whenever I started getting good-ish at that, I would study a little bit of character design, shape theory, colour theory etc.
Since I got all that practice, learning foundations, and learning why a artist did this etc etc.
This method did leave me kind of tied to references, as any time I didn't use them, it would look completely wrong. So I sacrificed a bit of originality.
But on things I practiced a lot, (general human anatomy such a hands, proportions, faces, cats, and some pokemon) I can do without references.
Just leaving this here for myself.
Stop doing these things:
- Get rid of all distractions
- Don’t multi task
- Stop going long periods with out breaks. (Spilt your work sessions into 25 min increments with 2 min breaks in between)
Things to do:
- Deconstruct your drawings and reference material.
- Recall the information by attempting to draw from memory.
- Self critique your art and find what you would change.
- Get some quality sleep.
- Repeat studies periodically throughout the year to ingrain it into long term memory.
- Don’t give up! Skills take time to build
(I added that last one)

Spent a night doing 20 heads in progressive angles learning how the head turns in various perspectives. Just doing ONE session of that improved my head drawings compared to 5 years formal art
Thank you for the inspiration friend
Ah I also do intense session likes this and I have found that it's actually more effective than having few small focused sessions. Nice to know that I'm not alone
Wait so do you mean like you drew 20 heads or just focused on one cause I’m doing couple of reference heads but idk if I should do a lot or just focus on one ??
Do you or anyone have any advice on starting this ? I struggle with drawing head a lot...
@@walwal6449 First try drawing them just from front or side profile, until they start to seem decent. Do the same reference pic multiple times, first of wich can be straight up tracing. Alvays try to check, what mistakes you did last time, and pay attention to those things next time.
Include neck and shoulders (tho with less focus and detail) since they are directly linked to head.
Next you can check some "head from different angles" tutorials and kind of just do the same thing again with those.
One good idea is to do these intense sessions focusing on spesific bodypart, and then fill the rest of drawing by doing other parts from memory or imagination. Like when you finish a hand study, try if you can add the head, using techniques you used in head study yesterday. It might not look pretty, but is really good for the long term memory.

I do most of what he described now with my art assignments. But I also committed to myself to improve from where I was previously. Due to circumstances, I didn’t pick up a pencil or brush for a year and thought I had forgotten all I had learned from before I stopped. But to my amazement the first painting when I started my art again was very good. Better than where I had previously left off. Apparently There is something to the long term storage memory thing, because once I committed to myself to improve in my art, my focus, 3rd eye, and concentration became clearer and the memory muscle kicked in. My mind was open and receptive to learning. It’s amazing how the brain works. *(The 3rd eye is almost like a meditative state some have described as being in the zone) Bottom line is, it doesn’t matter how you learn, the commitment starts with you, your inner self, your consciousness to achieve what you seek.

God I forget all sorts of basic things all the time. Everyone I know always tell me I’m lying because they’re impossible things to forget but I really do forget about them :’(( It’s hard
him: remove all distractions
my adhd ass: *panics*
If I removed all distractions I would have to remove myself… I AM THE DISTRACTION
Yeah I absolutely hate that advice. It works for neurotypical people, sure, but if I remove all distractions all I can focus on is "dont get distracted"
I was curious about this! Because if I stop playing music or listening to voices, I stop doing anything at all. I like to embroider, for example, and if I can’t find something to listen to while I do it, I won’t do it at all. I try, but I get winded and even fall asleep. I might even get depressed.
@@thecupcakefoxblog i listen to white noise or ambience sounds, it helps! I hope it helps you too 💓 Sitting in silence doesn't help me focus at all with my adhd.
My enfp ass: *panik too*
This is funny. I don’t draw.. but I spent years learning to fly rc helicopters. And at times I was so frustrated I almost pulled my hair out.
Things that helped me.
1: never practice more than 15min at the time.. 15min in the morning and in the evening. I felt a real boost in progress from that.
2: break down every maneuver I wanted to learn in small parts and wenn I learned them, I could make them in to one big maneuver.
3: good sleep..that goes for everything
4: I used a timer for the 15mins I practiced and was super focused, til the timer went off.
5: don’t over practice it destroys productivity and progress..if you practice 5hours a day, you’re brain will just turn in to pulp and turn off and you don’t learn anything. Plus wenn you push yourself that much, you will burn out and put everything to a side to get a break from it.
If you keep to 15min 2-3 times a day, you will stay hungry and will be eager to learn every day.
It took me a long time to figure this out. But I hope it helps someone

“Stop overloading your brain with useless information”
Me: but am I bob *or am I Dave*
Dave may be Bob but Bob may be Dave.
If Bob is not Bob then he could or could not be Dave but then Bob is not good at being Bob.
If Bob is Bob he can not be Dave but is good at being not Dave but Bob.
If Bob becomes Dave, Bob will no longer be Bob but instead be Dave but Bob will still be called Bob, if Bob stays as Bob then Bob may forever be Bob until the definition of Bob changes, however he would still be Bob as his name is Bob and he was Bob at the time.
If Dave is not Dave then he might be Bob, but he could also be not Bob. Same with Bob, he could be not Bob but also not Dave.
If Dave is not Dave then he technically is still Dave, but if Dave becomes Bob then he is both Dave and Bob. This also applies to Bob.
So if Bob and Dave swapped places, Dave will be Bob but also not be Bob and Bob will be Dave but not Dave.
Bob may be Dave but Dave may be Bob.

3 Things to stop doing:
-Getting rid of distractions and overloading of information.
-Stop Multi-tasking
-Take breaks (use Pomodoro, personal recommendation ;)
5 Things to do:
-Deconstruct
-Recall
-Self Critique
-Quality Sleep
-Spaced repetition
I just loved how you simplified the topic and all the illustrations in between were simply beautiful. Thank you
Thx man!😭✨
I found this exceptionally helpful. Truly. Thanks!

NOTES:
1. Get rid of all distractions while learning art related stuff. No social media, on phone.
2. No multitasking.
Research shows multitasking will decrease focus and attention span.
3. Stop practicing for long sessions without taking breaks.

I love the concept. Stick to ONE thing, dive into all the elements, physicality, and shape and do this repetitively as opposed to jumping about from one concept to the next as you will forget it in the long run!! LOVE IT!! For me? Eyes and noses only...but I guess I need to pick one for a time slot, and get the bits that make up the structure (bones, tendons and structures) Pick one thing till you master it, mastering something means it's yours, your left brain has slept on it, owns it and is happy.....
When he says about having a break every 20 minutes for 5 minutes that sounds similar to something I've heard of before called "The Pomodoro Technique" .every 25 minutes you have a break for 5 mins, then on the forth go round you have a 20 minute break, it does work , it improves your attention ,keeps your brain fresh but kinda keeps you in the flow . Great stuff!
it doesn't work for me cause I know once I take a break, I won't go back to drawing
@@timothy4077 same 😞

It's that thing we all do without consciously realising it. It takes a good amount of discipline to overcome. It's really rewarding once you do it though and it feels really good to finally break that bubble
