    Thank you for taking the time to make that demonstration/tutorial. You were very helpful in showing how to make the sides even - that remains one of the hardest things for me to do. I also really liked watching your expert craftsmanship (craftswomanship) on making the bobcat vest. Comments were turned off on that video (I think we all know why) so I will thank you for making that one here. I look forward to seeing more of your expert work.

    Wow, this is a brilliant guide! I was having some trouble learning about the hide -> clothing/blanket process outside of industrial contexts for writing purposes.
    I did find it a little funny that you have gorgeous natural hides that get backed with plastic-based fabric, but hey, if it works, it works!

      Thanks for your comments. The lining backing can be other fabrics, I chose to use this as it's lightweight and has sufficient amount of batting, probably not all natural fibers, others can be used, best is a woven fabric type for lining that does not stretch.

    I have a question on cleaning fur. I inherited a mink and fox coat . The smell is horrible. Both in perfect condition. I'm wondering if I take them apart and wash in dawn then alum and borax the skin side so doesn't shrink. I tried the saw dust but the smoke and old smell is still there. Thanks 😊

      You don't wash fur, I'd clean at a furrier, if the odor is moldy or mildew that won't likely come out. But most cigarette smell will if cleaned at a furrier, check your local furriers.
      Good luck

    I am wondering what kind of tanning your Furs got. When i get them from my tanner (alum tanning), they are soft and already stretched. He tells me, that i should never get them wet, because the tanning would wash out and the leather would get hard.

    • @McCormickLeatherandFurs
      @McCormickLeatherandFurs  Год назад +2

      These furs were tanned at Moyles, a garment grade tanning. The pelts during tanning will shrink back in size from when they were dried originally.
      The process to regain the size and maximized the pelt for use as a furrier involves wet stretching the pelt as in the video.
      But yes you don't want to get a fur, or the leather side wet after its sewn up, as in a drenching rain or spilled water on it as it will again shrink in any area that the water completely penetrates, also steam will do much the same.
      Hope this answers your comment.
      Thanks

    How much would a blanket like that sell for? I’m not asking to buy it, just trying to get an idea. Thanks!

      Labor would probably be around 600.00 for me to do. It was 14 pelts so red fox is reasonable right now I'd guess each pelt about 90.00 x 14.
      Retail maybe 2500 to 3000

      @@McCormickLeatherandFurs ah okay. I was thinking about $3000 or so, but came across various pelt blankets with astronomically different prices. All fox pelts. Thank you!

    To much throat. Why didn't you square off the throat. You could have just let in the head. And remove the white and blanket would have been all cherry. Why don't you just use natural paw line . Starch the pelts. Center back is called the Grotzen. Call Ira and get skin softener.

    • @McCormickLeatherandFurs
      @McCormickLeatherandFurs  Год назад

      Thanks for your comments, the client wanted the white from the throats included. It gives a lot of added color in my opinion. All red is also beautiful. Yes the gotten is the center back of the skin but not all understand that term. I do use liquid starch on leather in my hats. But starch isn't going to make the or reinforce the leather as well as a China silk or weft backing. Not sure why leather softener would have been necessary on these foxes. I know Ira and now Austin as Ira is kind of retired. I'd love to see how you do your work. Do you have any videos ? Join the Fur Skins sewing the craft of furriers group on Facebook.
