  • In this how to, I will show you how to construct a Muskrat fur blanket from muskrat pelts. I used over 100 pelts in this blanket . I sorted the pelts by size using the smallest pelts at the top of the blanket and the largest at the bottom. This is a basic block method that uses the most the muskrat pelt has to offer, their are other designs you can create but this method was the one I chose to use the most of the fur the client had sent me. I use a Bonis A 16 fur machine to sew the fur pelts together and the lining side is attached by both fur sewing machine and hand stitched in areas. I did make 2 pillows that were about 12 pelts each and this is a good example of how you can make pillows also. I hope you find the information helpful and wish you the best in your efforts to making your own fur blanket , you can figure the size by how many pelts you choose to use. You'll see how to work with tanned muskrat pelts,, once you've chosen what to make these tips will let you get a great finished product. The basic techniques are the same for small projects like mitts, hats , plows and blankets. I hope you find it helpful. I sew with all types of fur and can design and make items from your furs or mine.

Thanks for making this video! It's so hard to find any information on crafting with real fur so this is a rare treat 😊

Thanks I plan on doing more, I agree limited examples, it seems like in all the fur shops the furriers are retiring, and not into doing demos.

This is the most wonderful, helpful video! I've been trying to make a blanket and pillow from possum pelts (in NZ) and this is just the information i needed to do the job well. Can you tell me please what the name of the tape is that you put around the edge - is it cold tape? Thank you!

Excellent video, I'm glad I found this. I've been increasingly diving into fur crafting and trap and tan everything myself, just bought a fur machine after a few years of doing it by hand. Question for you, what sort of table are you using to staple to when you block the pelts out, is it just some plywood? I've only just learned about doing that and feel like i need to start doing it with my pelts before crafting them.

I got it at menards, it is a piece of Homasote, type of cellulose fiber board like paper mache. Its lightweight for me and easy to staple into. Also called sound board. I cut the 4x8 sheet in half and use both sides, stand on End to dry

Use a sheet of Homasote board, its a fiber board from menards, its 1/2 or so thick , I use on top of a table, I cut it in half easier to move, I can use both sides. Its also called sound board its like pressed paper usually used to insulate for noise.. works awesome

    Great video.
Did I miss how many tanned muskrat hides it would take to make a sleeping robe ?
    About 5'× 6'
    Thanks for sharing.

Depends of size of muskrats, this blanket took about 100
      I'd estimate 50 to 60
      For a 5x6 size

@@McCormickLeatherandFurs Current price for raw muskrat is about $2.50
      Tanning is a variable.
Trying to figure out how much a robe would cost.
Looking at furs that aren't worth as much as coyote and bobcat that would be tolerable to have against you.
      Thanks again.
      Maybe opossum ! 😅🤣😂

I bought a blue fox fur blanket and won’t get it for about a month, I know I’ll get info about it from the seller, but what’s your thoughts on storing fur blankets from may-September?

      Preferably at home.

Well you can always bring into a furrier for storage during summer , but id say get a big hanger and hang it up if you store at home.

There's alot of really good options for fur blankets, you can use mink, you can use fox, you can use sheared and plucked beaver not regular beaver, you can use raccoon, kangaroo, chinchilla. All these are amazing to use for blankets or pillows

You do very nice work but your explanation is hard to follow.

I'm sorry if you found the project hard to follow. The process is similar to my red fox blanket video, as far as basic construction. The difference of couse is the type of fur used and size on pelts. But overall, the process is similar.
I appreciate the comment, I hope I can improve with my content. Good luck with your project.
