  • Lockheed Martin and CoAspire unveiled the new Mako Multi-Mission Hypersonic Missile at Sea Air Space 2024. Mako, the name derived from the fastest shark in the sea, is being pitched to the US Navy by Lockheed Martin for its speed, affordability, and targeting versatility to hold many targets at risk.

    According to Lockheed Martin officials, this is the first time the hypersonic missile has been publicly displayed since the beginning of its development over seven years ago. A graphic played by the company at the CoAspire booth shows what seems to be a U.S. Air Force F-35A launching six of the hypersonic missiles in quick succession from both external and internal mounts.

The feature they present about this missile is not computing, but speed, and the whistleblowers and some private sector executives said that 6 decades ago, their reverse engineering dominated gravity.

    The fact that it fits inside the weapons bay of the F-35 seems like it may have been an important design goal. Two of these can be carried, and the aircraft remains fully stealthy. You don't need huge range when you can fly in quietly, launch, then return to base. The target will never know where they came from.

      They were going for the SiAW bid, but lost to the AARGM-ER derivative. So that's where that came from. If it's cheaper yet effective, the Navy might opt for this instead of the SiAW. However, it might be better and cheaper to go in with the SiAW since they'll be splitting the bill with the Air Force. It just depends on how much it got tweaked and what else it brings to the table other than speed tbh. Speed could be its selling point, but how much faster than mach 4 is it? If it's mach 5, I doubt it'll find any buyers. If it's above mach 6, its chances should increase dramatically. Just speculation btw

      @@ViceCoin All good questions, but you heard Xavier ask "what can you tell me". The guy stated all the company is telling about the missile at this point. As for a warhead/payload at Mach 5 against smaller ships it doesn't need one. it would just tear apart a ship and any on board fuel would cause fires.

      @@user-tt6il2up4o the US is the only country that is publicly working on hypersonic weapons systems for conventional munitions (so you can't really say they're late.) The other missiles that are out there are only for delivering nuclear payloads, and the missiles that claimed to be hypersonic for delivering conventional munitions turned out to be nothing more than a normal ballistic missile with a conventional warhead.

    This is likely Lockheed's entrant for the SiAW missile program. They lost the competition to Northrop Grumman late last year. If you've ever seen the AARGM-ER missile (the new HARM), this thing looks VERY similar to an AARGM-ER. The only real difference is that the strakes that extend along the entire length (almost) of both sides of the AARGM-ER are very short on this missile. You can see them only on the front of this missile.
    The rest of the missile body appears to be identical to an AARGM-ER. It was simply scaled up in size in order to hold more fuel so it could reach hypersonic speeds while still maintaining a useful range. And, of course, the contract called for an upper limit on its size in order for it to fit inside the internal weapons bays on an F-35, which is why the full-length side strakes were removed.
    Because Lockheed lost the SiAW competition to Northrop Grumman (who manufactures the AARGM-ER, the missile that these SiAW missiles were very clearly based on), they are now revealing this hypersonic missile publicly in the hopes of getting interest from the US Navy (SiAW is an Air Force program) and/or foreign ally militaries. And because Northrop Grumman will be busy manufacturing their winning SiAW missile to fulfill the Air Force's order(s) for it, this Lockheed Mako is available right now for order from the US Navy or any foreign allies who may want a capability like this (and who can get US approval to buy them). They can order these missiles right now and have them produced right now for rapid fielding, whereas any US Navy/foreign orders for the Northrop Grumman SiAW will have to get in line behind the current Air Force order(s) for that missile. Lockheed's production line is just sitting there waiting for the first order to come in.
    And just to add...the technical details for the SiAW missile are obviously still classified. It is a brand-new weapon and a brand-new capability for the US military...they haven't even fielded these things yet. Since both Lockheed and Northrop had to meet the same requirements for the SiAW program, this missile has the exact same (or nearly the same) technical specs as the US Air Force's brand new SiAW missile. That means this guy CAN'T share any technical details of this missile publicly...just basic, vague stuff. It's still very cool to finally see this thing, though.

      This answered all my questions. The buzzword Hypersonic never ceased to blur things. The AARGM-ER seems like (from the surface) the better choice, so I wonder what the can stuff inside this that would intrigue the Navy in the Mako over the NG winner, which was tested on a Rhino.
      The strakes idea seems to really have NG interest, as they’ve also shown it off on the Maritime Strike Missile, which looks huge.

      I wonder if this is a scramjet powered missile or the pure rocket motor driven... Anyway it is a cool weapon and if it can be fielded fast it would be a great adittion to USAF arsenal.
      P. S. How does this stand compared to HALO anti ship missile being developed for the US Navy? MAKO is definitely hypersonic and primaraly an anti ship missile, not so much an all rounder..

      @@vegass04 I’m not sure if it’s “hypersonic” in terms of being a HCM or HGV. It just looks like a regular rocket powered missile that can go Mach 5. It seems what makes it good is likely its guidance or gizmos, but the propulsion and aerodynamics seems pretty conventional.

    Based on the shallowness of his responses, I get the impression that Rick wasn't too interested in answering questions about the weapon to the public media. He was even cagey about the development status, saying it hasn't yet been developed to prototype but at the same time it's "ready to fly", "ready now", and "ready to go to scale production".

    The key is that this Mako system fits inside the F-35’s internal weapons bay. Now, imagine a F-15EX Eagle II fully equipped with 12+ hypersonic missiles. I’d still prefer if the USAF had adopted the B-1X program. A B-1 full of air-to-air being guided by F-35s and Wedgetails.

      @@vlhc4642 Both are hypocritical. Russia claimed their hypersonic weapons were couldn’t be defended. Ukraine has shown that Zircons & Iskanders missiles can be and have been intercepted by Patriots. So, I put as much weight to China’s claims of their weapons as the same as Russia’s claims.

      ​@vlhc4642 Erm.. A 2000km air to air missile? That's no longer a missile anymore that's essentially a high flying torpedo. For comparison, the PL-17 is supposed to be 20 ft long and claims to reach about 400km.. so for an AAM to have a 2000km range, we're talking about a missile that's probably greater in length than the J-20 itself.
      No fighter sized jet on Earth could ever hope to carry something of that size, let alone a decent sized bomber.

      The US had actually been trying to develop hypersonic missiles for years but couldn't do it. Obviously having a missile that can't be blocked would be attempted to developed by any nation on the cutting edge of military technology.

    You can see he was very deliberate in his answers to not give away too much. Sensitive questions would be, what is its range, can it hit air targets? can it operate in GPS & communications denied environments? What is the top speed of the missile? Does the missile have any EW self protection measures? Can the missile deploy active countermeasures? Can the missile manoeuvre at hypersonic speeds? What is the price per unit? How many could Lockheed martin produce? How long does it take for the weapon to cook off?

      Lot of specifications are classified but yes, the Mako will be able to be used on a variety of launch platforms. It's meant to be a weapon that can be used on multiple different platforms to increase the US capability of fielding hypersonic missiles.

    It can be considered in 13’s. 13 feet long, 13 inch diameter, 1300lb weight, 130lb warhead. Plus range will not allow for safe firing outside of possible detection range for an F35.

    It's too small to be anything beyond mid range. It takes an insane amount of fuel to get to Mach 5 and maintain that speed.

      It won't matter whether it's a mid range weapon, if the F35 can carry it internally. An F35 could probably get within 75 miles or less of a ship without being detected. For example, if this missile has a 150-mile range that's plenty close enough. A missile going that fast, that is within 100 miles of the target will give that target less than a minute to impact. It's basically a kill shot for pretty much any ship out there. Scary stuff for any navy the US goes against.

    It should be noted that the speed of the missile (Mach 5) is quite realistic given the fact that beyond Mach 5 a plasma layer is formed around the missile which cuts off all access to outside telecommunications. In fact, this is the reason why Space Shuttle astronauts experienced a communications blackout during reentry. Look up the Starship IFT-3 reentry clips to see the plasma layer.
    Considering an anti ship missile must keep continuous track of its target at all times, one cannot afford a communications blackout. This is not the case for land attack missiles which can be guided via inertial navigation which does not depend on external communications.

    It would've been cool to at least get an approximation for the specs. Are we talking 50 or 500 or 5000 miles of range? Is it barely mach 5 top speed and less during the final approach, or maybe closer to mach 10 during the entire flight? Is it just a kinetic projectile, 50lbs warhead or maybe 1000lbs of kaboom?
    Sure the exact specs are classified, but at least a baseline to understand what category of missile this is.

    Aussies showed interest in the Norwegian JSM missile for the F-35A internal bomb bay, it is a smart very manoeuvrable, stealth, anti ship land attack sub sonic missile, now this Mako might be a better fit but it depends on it's range, stealth and manoeuvrability if applicable at such speeds? and warhead size, especially if it has to carry out an anti ship capability as a small warhead all be it fast might not be effective.
    I have so many questions: Is the Mako a pure rocket or does it have a air breathing engine? can it manoeuvre at such speeds, it it stealthy at such speeds RCS and IR, what is its flight profile does it have low low low capability or does it fly high in sight of the enemies radar for most of it's flight, Warhead size? Range? even though it is hypersonic does it slow to a more interceptable terminal speed? is it networked? what is its guidance, does it have AI?

      Pure rocket. Keeps costs down. There isn't much overlap in missions for JSM and Mako, _unless_ LM can somehow produce Mako for a substantially lower cost than JSM.

      Well, it’s got a pretty good range. Warhead size - it can’t be too big. Guidance? It follows instructions downloaded to its onboard computer. Also, it’s really, really fast.

      No warhead as kinetic energy of hypersonic vehicle is used. Guidance likely INS using laser in fiber loop. Communication and GPS is difficult until it slows down to stop ionization.

    They didn’t say if it was a hypersonic cruise missile or HGV? The small size leads me to believe it is a cruise variant, HGV would require a larger booster IIRC. Hopefully we get some details on speeds of these eventually, the leaked info on AGM-163 had it close to Mach 18.

      It was competing in the SiAW bid and lost, so I'm guessing more like a shorter/medium range cruise missile. The SiAW bid that won is an AARGM-ER derivative, mach 4 and 300 km range iirc. This is hypersonic, so it will obviously be faster but will have a shorter range. Or perhaps similar range but a smaller warhead

      The scramjet inlet should be clearly visible, so it's probably HGV. On hypersonic cruise missiles, you just can't have inlets receded into the fuselage like you can on subsonic turbojet-powered cruise missiles. I would also argue that it would be easier to make a smaller rocket booster than a scramjet. Not to mention that even on a hypersonic cruise missiles you would need a solid fuel rocket booster to get it up to operating speed for the scramjet, but it appears Mako is a single stage missile.
      P.S. What's AGM-163? Did you mean AGM-183 ARRW?

      Hypersonic is to reduce warning time only. Terminal phase maybe supersonic. It will use Inertial Navigation plus GPS if available. Homing will be regular active radar/iir(contrast) as it will be supersonic near target.

      @@Randomguy-wy4xi Hypersonic in troposphere will result in plasma and it is useless. It will need an air breathing ramjet for powered flight to overcome the enormous drag. No communication or radar because of plasma. Once near target it will drop its speed and homing/radar/communication can happen. Greatly reduces warning time because of low altitude line of sight issue and hypersonic velocity flight.
      However aeroballistic flight at the boundary of space is feasible as both hypersonic speed and communication is possible as there is no plasma, because low gas density. But it will be observable on radar because of its altitude of 50-100 km.
