    Incredible! I must read a dozen books about anxiety, spirituality, meditation Etc. I've never had somebody piece everything together so well.
    The uses of talking, showing props, repeating, simplifying and showing the text on the screen is the perfect formula to learn!

    I had PTSD, I could clearly observe my body responding to heightened alert and cortisol. I could also observe my thinking mind trying to control danger by ruminating and trying to understand. I like how you recapped at the end and art homework. I am going to try and help your channel grow by liking and commenting and hope others do too.

    I have been dealing with OCD, ASD and anxiety basically my whole life. I am 22 now and struggle with OCD related anxiety, and this video sir is the best explanation I have ever heard on what is going on.     While listening to this, even if I wasn't sad I was crying because of how true this is. The reason I stopped the video in the middle is because as smart as am, my brain won't pay attention and starts to have all these obsessive thoughts. A year ago someone told me that they overcame their depression by talking to themselves, but because at that time I didn't know what type of anxiety I had, talking to myself had made my OCD what it is now. I can't stop thinking. Even when I'm tired, my brain is going at the same pace it did months ago, never slowing down. And because I have no one to talk to, I talk to anime characters in my head. They reassure me. I listen to your videos beca use, it's just so true. One of my thoughts were you were my therapist and you were talking to me about my OCD. I don't have a therapist, I call the anime characters in my head "my inner therapist". As weird as the thought seemed, for some reason it all makes sense. I feel like while listening to you, I'm crying and laughing at the same time. I don't feel like I can trust anyone, especially myself. I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm an 11 year old girl. Why can't I be normal? Another thought I usually get 24/7 is that it's all my fault. I just found out that my brain isn't really me (if that makes sense), but I still blame everything in myself. Then I get this thought to kill myself. I don't have depresion. Still, for some apparent reason I get these thoughts. I feel like I deserve this. It's my body, my brain. It's my fault made myself like this! I deserve all this pain! Wait now I'm - wh at was I wanting to say? Huh, whatever. Anyways, thank you for these videos! It really helps me because even though- nvm. Ima explain it. Even though I know you can't think yourself out of a situation, I made this problem, I gotta solve it. Even though I know I'm wrong, I deserve this. I started this, an going to end this. On. My. Own. No therapist. Even though my mom makes enough money, I don't want her to waste it on me. If I'm such a smart child I might as well solve this. Somebody shouldn't go out of their way to help me. But in the end I realize this is one of the thoughts I get, I just am writing it down. Am I actually going to go this way? I really don't know. I still need to think. I always thought it's normal to think this much. At school, ALMOST EVERYWHERE, I'm known as a loud, outgoing child. But for some reason, I'm just hiding everything. From my mom. Sister. Grandma. Friends. For some reason I really wish they can know the truth. But I hide it. I always tell myself, "this is the day you tell them", but once I walk in the door I forget everything and go on faking. No, correction. I don't forget everything. Instead I over-thought everything and decided not to tell them. Anyone. In the end is my fault. But at the same time I want everyone to know all this mental pain in going through! But at the same time I know they wouldn't understand me. It's really hard. I even get these thoughts IF I was actually talking to a therapist, I would tell them nothing. At the same time, I'm telling them everything. Oh well, who ever got this far, sorry for making you read all of this. I'll stop now.

      It sounds like you have just got yourself into a psychological muddle and need to press a reset button. People tend to think too much! Keep coming back to the videos 1, 2 and 3 and watch them in little chunks, slowly your mind will see things differently.     I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for a while now and I have recently "discovered" the OCD. I've been having uncontrollable thoughts and I cannot shut them up. I've tried to ignore them by putting loud music or so and nothing works. It is exhausting trying to explain this to my husband who I know wants to help me so much but probably doesn't understand how... heh, I don't know how to help myself at this point. I think I want to give this a try. I love how you explain everything and your voice is very calming. I can see that you understand what you're saying and not just saying it to get done with it. Thank you so much now and in advance as I really hope this helps me and all of us that are dealing with such "problems" because it is EXHAUSTING. Again, thank you.

      Hi no one in my relationships Habe understood but if you think we can't explain it ourselves I know exactly what your going though I found at 13 I had OCD I'm 37 now and its starting to take its toll on me .. I'm hoping these help us he talks sense and gets you thinking in a way we're you begin to understand what's wrong

      It’s going to be ok I have the same problem I struggle with thinking way to much and I stress out about it I can’t stop playing the same thoughts over and over again I feel like I’m going to drive myself Insane but don’t feel alone don’t stop fighting I’m fighting with you

    Congrats! Very good video, cut and clean explanation of our brain structures are functioning, in a language that can be easily understood by anyone who is not a specialist. So important that we understand how our brain and body work to be able to understand and help ourselves.

    It is an amazing video, it gives real insight about the inter-relation between conscious and unconscious part of our mind.
    Here is a list of important points i found in this video:
    1.Even though our body is agitated with unreasonable emotions, our mind can still be kept at peace.
    2. We can retrain our unconscious mind by repetition, knowing this is useful not only for people with ocd but for everyone. As we go through life our unconscious learns different things, and it very likely to learn few things which are unreasonable, when these learnt things starts to interfere with our life in a negative way, giving us unnecessary fear, doubts and worries we call it ocd. Knowing that we can retrain our mind to unlearn these things or rather learn new things is a big deal.
    3. Just knowing that we can retrain our unconscious wouldn't be of any use if we don't know how to do it. This video gives us a real insight that our unconscious doesn't understand language, logic and reason. It doesn't even understand if the situations are real or unreal, the only thing it understands is our reaction to the situation. It gets trained by repetition, if we keep reacting in a wrong way to certain situation, it adds that to its memory and when we face that situation again, it gives us different emotions which urges us to react in the same way we have been reacting to it all this while. People with ocd have reacted to situations in a wrong way, so whenever that situation occurs, they are overwhelmed with emotions and feel compulsion to react in the same way, if they react the same way it further enforces the association of those situations with the actions, they feel even more anxiety, this way the cycle goes on and on. But if we start reacting to these situations differently, firstly we will get overwhelmed with emotions because our unconscious wants to save us and it knows that we can be saved only if we react in a specific way, but if we stick it and repeatedly react differently, slowly and steadily the anxiety subsides and our unconscious learns that there is a different way of reacting to these situations.

    This is exactly what I've been going through lately. For years I suffer from anxiety and compulsive behaviors. When I practice yin yoga before bedtime, my emotion calms down naturally the next day. I never quite understand why. Recently, whenever the intrusive thoughts are playing in the back of my mind, I consciously redirect my focus to my body: I'm here, breathing, washing vegetables, touching my thighs, etc. My anxiety level and compulsive behaviors drop by a large margin. I never know that the body speaks a different language. I was too mesmerized by analyzing and reasoning. Your video has removed my long-standing confusion. The way you deliver it is so succinct and to the point. I love it!

    Thank you so very much for your detailed yet easy to understand explanations...I developed OCD once I became a pastry chef in a large hotel...the counting and recounting of items to always make sure you had enough..then it moved on to "did I take all the plastic wrap off the cream cheese"..I have often felt that I work a double shift...one in the kitchen..and the other shift in my brain..I also teach baking a pastry and know I have students who suffer as well..I will be sharing these video's with them. Thank you for your kindness in educating people such as myself!

    im finally getting around to watching these videos, I went down a bit of a bad spiral this year & am now kind of seeing the light. Things got so bad that I ended up on SSRI's (briefly) against my own judgement & intuition, and tapered off after about 2 months on my own accord. I haven't been on them now since mid may. I saw an OCD specialist too though that didn't work out as I felt like she never took me seriously and even chucked when I told her my theme. She did help me to understand ocd to a degree though, and how I just need not give it power. This has helped a lot but need to dive further into other areas of anxiety such as my agoraphobia. In no means am I perfect and I have a long way to go. What DID draw me to you though was how perfectly you explained ocd, even better than this therapist. Almost immaculately to my experience. I was going through some really, really bad anxiety last year due to where I am in life. Funnily enough a year to this date. This seemed to have stemmed from my job that I would go to day in & out which I know isn't who I am and have most certainly outgrown - But due to agoraphobia and being stuck in the same fkn 10km (which I overcome but seem to slip back & forth), I IGNORED all these feelings because I felt like I didn't have a choice. and there was a clear indicator that this was the issue. I had this feeling of stress in my body that developed that just wouldn't go away and I kept trying to fight through. Eventually my brain pulled out the big guns & it developed into this whole pure OCD thing. Makes total sense. I am still at that same job but that feeling of stress has since dissipated to a degree, I believe because I am now working on ways of getting myself out of that place (or just the place I am in life). Since we briefly spoke in early January about ocd in the comments, I have now started studying a course trying to fix these issues. I have a long way to go, but the journey has begun. I just need to fix my focus, and stop pretending everything is fine. because its not.

The secret to finding calmness is through courage, self-esteem, understanding your innate personality type, seeing the world differently, updating your belief systems, finding your voice, retraining your brain, desensitising your body and accessing energy.     I ve had extreme ideative OCD for years... Fell on the wrong psychiatrists. One insisted on doing a psychoanalysis that made me wallow in self- pity instead of helping. I never got good professional help, although i did seek it. I finally googled self - help books. I was desperate. Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by Grayson helped me bigtime, although it was hard. I never took medication because the exposure prevention therapy works perfectly for me. But it s very difficult to do it on your own and OCD, especially the ideative type, is so sneaky..... My OCD is back with a vengeance, probably triggered by recent events... I hope your videos help me. I m NOT in a good place right now. My OCD is mostly thoughts of harming myself and others especially those i love

    Great video. He underestimates cats and dogs though. Its not just a case of a cat or dogs brain unconsciously making decisions for them.
    My cat stratagizes, generates quite creative solutions consciously.
    Dogs most definitly do.
    Many still insist on underestimating animals.

    This was a great video!!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I do have one question. You said the subconscious brain doesn’t understand language, so how is it that hypnosis tapes work? Like the ones ppl listen to while sleeping when they want to stop a bad habit like smoking. The tape is speaking in words, so if the subconscious doesn’t understand language how does that work? I really hope you answer, I am very intrigued by this. Thank you in advance.

    Hi John. You said in this video that anxiety makes you distrust your emotions, and for quite some time, I have wondered whether intuition is simply a part of our 'feeling' brain that has unconsciously been fed ideas on what is good and bad, right and wrong, as taught to us by others. Do anxiety and obsessive thoughts 'stain' your intuition, so to speak, and is there a way to refine this part of you so that it relays good information and doesn't just reflect your value system and/or your fears?

    I feel like our bodies make up feelings that we don’t even need to worry about 🤔 if that makes sense.

      Our bodies just respond to all our thoughts as if they are true and how it was "conditioned" to respond by life, parents etc. It is reprogrammable! It's not easy but it is possible.

      Thank God I'm not the only one! Even though my OCD isn't sexual OCD, for some reason I get sexual thoughts whenever talking to someone, or just maybe watching a tv show. I'm not even a dirty person!

    Hi John, I wanted to ask a question about something I've been experiencing, I will make this as short, precise, and thorough as possible. A most recent example would be this, I visited a website months ago that helped me build views for youtube channel. Anyway, for some reason i did not click on the accept/decline box for cookies, and proceeded to do whatever i needed to do. I noticed when i closed the window, my OCD kicked in and started bothering me, saying "why didnt you make a decision and either accept or decline the cookies? "Was it because you had an intrusive image, were you afraid?" blah blah blah etc you get the point. Anyway, i noticed it went away after awhile, but then randomly remembered about it months later. So my mind creates these scenarios, where i feel like i need to go on that specific computer, to that specific site, and either accept the cookies or block them, just to "undo" what had possibly happened. I notice this happens and my ocd tries to threaten me with intrusive images, implying that if i do not do it IMMEDIATELY, or URGENTLY, then i will be bothered by the images or anxiety.Of course I want to simply be at peace and let it go, and not care, I notice I am having more glimpses of not caring and not obsessing, and not worrying, but what else can I do to really change and overhaul my subconscious, it always seems like its one thing or the other trying to bother me, Any advice for this?

    Hi. I appreciate your channel, will follow and might patron.
    I have two questions if you would be generous with your time and information, since it is the first time I encounter an “anxiety Specialist”:
    1- have you treated severe cases of debilitating anxiety where people felt as though they were “rotting away”
    2- I had a severely traumatic and confusing childhood. I now have major blockages in my life and feel as though I am a total failure and worthless just like my parents.
    Is it possible to undo the blockages and anxiety without going in depth and working on the faulty childhood programming that is in the unconscious?
    I believe your answers will help everyone who deals with anxiety. Sorry for being long and good luck!

    Hey john, i have made an incredible recovery thanks to you, I would say most days, i really feel out of the ocd, and can see how it becomes a trap, I noticed that only one particular type of obsession/compulsion that tries to bother me throughout the day, and that is with words. My mind tends to quickly say, if you said xyz because this or that reason, then you have to say the opposite, to "undo" or "clean" the action. Now usually i am able to easily ignore it, but sometimes i get caught up in the arguments, and at times i feel compelled or addicted to having to go back like a mental rewind and try to remember why i said what, and it is incredibly exhausting, any quick tips to stay out of this?

      I hear you, this is very common and 'to a certain point' quite natural.
      The brain tends to pattern match and look for words, sounds, action, situations etc., that are similar, so it can group them together as either good or bad, for quick response to future events.
      But some people get addicted to watching the workings of the mind (which really) are not there to be consciously observed because they just run unconsciously in the background.
      Let me try to explain... If you could see what your computer was thinking/doing you might say "that is silly why is it thinking about that problem?" But in reality, it was running a subroutine, to check one piece of code against every other piece of code to see it it has ever been used. To the computer (your unconscious mind) this is a sensible thing to do, because it can.
      But, to your conscious mind, you are asking "why is it thinking about that?" But it is out of context, it was just checking it against everything.
      So, you have a conscious addiction to understanding why / looking for answers / running patterns on things that are just the "workings in the margin" of your unconscious mind computer.
      Of course, once you consciously engage, the body thinks whose thoughts are real and reacts to them, you get anxious and look for other thinking ways to calm down, which just further exhausts you.
      Therefore, as ever, the secret is to consciously stop worrying about what the unconscious mind does - and get out of its way!
      My tips would be to realise that - you don't need to think as much as you think, try going into situations and conversations without thinking you need to know what to say or prepare in anyway, and just see what happens.
      When in conversations, really listen to the other person 9not what you are going to say next) and see that words just come out of your mouth as needed - it is fascinating!
      Then (like in video 16) explore which characters are your thoughts coming from, and which ones are trying to answer those thoughts.
      Consider, that animals (who don't talk) won't have this problem and they survive just fine and unstressed - so can we.
      Finally, don't see your mind 'as you' see it like a computer in your head, with some old out of date software running, ignore it or reprogram it (video 18).

      @@TakeResponsibilityforYOURLife also I just started trusting my body and subconscious more, although some days I feel more of a pull trying to sabotage me with obsessive and endless thinking, only to feel more exhausted an ultimately not getting anywhere, sometimes my mind can go wild like a Sherlock Holmes trying to put together a puzzle! But ultimately I know my subconscious can handle it, and I seem to feel more proud and definitely more at ease knowing it can handle anything without my constance interference or reassurance!

    Hey John. I love your videos! A quick question. Just because the subconscious and conscious are 2 separate systems, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re not related.       @@TakeResponsibilityforYOURLife I understand what you’re saying, but most of the time, the problem with logic when it comes to OCD is that people’s compulsions prevent them from having logical thinking patterns and thus prevents rationale decision making. But most of the time - if not always - logic, especially when it comes from an unbiased, clear mind, can interact with the emotions in a way that can help ppl out.

      For some, the six months pre and post birth can cause existing levels of anxiety or OCD to rise, this is due to many things including - fear of the event, life changes, responsibility growing etc. However, I think the two biggest factors are worry and exhaustion.     Hello,
    I have a problem that I have OCD, PTSD, depression and anxiety and am an overthinker. With this pandemic going on I’ve deteriorated somewhat and also feel like I’m going through depersonalization and it makes me fear that I will die from it as if like it tries to shut down itself. I am being medicated but therapists I’ve been seeing don’t seem to understand the whole issue at hand, tried explaining it to them but don’t seem to have luck with them. What should I do?

    Hello Sir.I suffer from sensorimotor OCD since last 3 years .My thoughts are stuck at my blinking and breathing .When one goes away other comes into play .I find it diffucult to go through the day and experience headaches a lot almost throughout the day as i try to control my breath How I can help myself .There are no proper treatment available and some even didnt identify it as OCD. I will be highy oblidged if you will reply to my comment .

It's like I bet if I was prone to fainting I would be passing out 24/7. People don't believe the mental pain I go through just because I'm 11. I feel like us people with OCD though can realate. Yes, whenever one thought goes away, another takes its place. I can't stand this. Sometimes I just want to give up. It's been 9 months since you posted that comment, so if you are seeing this please tell me your progress. This is my second year with OCD, 4th year with anxiety overall. I hope you're doing better!

      I think this is basically denial of how debilitating OCD is and avoiding getting professional help. You don't have to substitute the thought, just realise that unconscious thoughts have no meaning (except the conscious meaning you give them).       In my experience this is the wrong question to ask. A better one is how can I better access the serotonin in my body? If you are constantly flooding your body with stress chemicals from adrenalin and cortisol through anxiety and worry - your cells will (overtime) become conditioned to have more receptors for them and less for your serotonin. So, this needs to be reversed so you have less receptors for anxiety chemicals and more for happy chemicals. This is done by tricking your own mind and body repeatedly for a few months. I cover this in video 7 of my course. John

    Thoughtful, useful series! Kudos to you John! However, when you took out the brain, the talk went awry! 30K years ago, there were still homo sapiens in addition to other hominids. 100k years ago, there were earlier forms of hominids, so they were mammals with a cerebral cortex. The limbic system coevolved with the cortex as with the cerebellum. When you are talking about the hind brain, you are actually holding the cerebellum, which was a support to the cortex to improve signal timing (usually more routinely described in association with motor activity, but involved in all cortical activity! Anyway, I'm not sure why you took out a human brain, but evolutionary psychology is certainly valuable in your discussion of psychiatric phenomenology. I would not say "turns off" the upper areas of the brain, however it certainly bypasses the upper brain in terms of triggering the initially response to a threatening, urgent stimulus.

      I am trying to keep it simple and use metaphor rather than deep scientific justification as often people don't have time to research everything - or the anxiety shortens their attention span.

Psychiatry is a very challenging field and it is not always easy to express declaratively what one may know intuitively. But when one does understand things in on a declarative basis, they can be more consistent in their performance because it becomes consciously monitored. The test for whether one knows something declaratively is that they can state it clearly and directly. My concern is that you were not passing this second test. We don't need to banter this about. This is my perspective of how things work which you can either accept or reject. I hope you continue to grow as I hope we all continue to grow as it benefits ourselves and our patients. Best, Ken

      I am loving our little chats. I used to be exactly as you are with precision and accuracy. But in the last five years I have changed completely - I am more interested in being happy, rather than being "right." My old need to be right used to exhaust me and piss people off :-)
      This has led me to start looking at the world completely differently.
      I am not a psychologist, or a Doctor, I am an engineer trying to use logic and reason (and metaphor) to explain things that even science doesn't truly understand - like the brain / thought / emotions / love / care etc. These are non-linear emotions and can't even be scientifically proved - you could say understanding love is a pseudoscience and can only ever be so? It is unprovable!
      Just take this whole Covid thing most of the medical world work from the basis of germ theory where bacteria and viruses cause most illness - yet, this has NEVER been proven. Which is why you can't test for the Covid 19 virus, only the trail it leaves, if it even does leave a trail or it is the bodies own exosomes that are being measured. Who is right and who is wrong? It doesn't really matter, if you have a healthy immune system it is not really a problem. But nobody is talking about the effect of fear on our immune systems.....
      Most doctors and scientists can't explain OCD and rarely treat it well without medication, yet I have incredible results, helping people to become a different person.
      So I lie to myself everyday (which is what optimists do) - I rarely complain about things, I don't follow rules, I could go on all day about things I do to try and be happy in the now.

      @@TakeResponsibilityforYOURLife John, While I appreciate what you are saying, you are making the same concessions that Pascal made when confronting the 3 body problem or Shannon made when devising communication theory (which has the more, yet inaccurate title of information theory despite ignoring meaning and only focusing on transmission accuracy). These are concessions made to the limits of logic due to chaos/complexity. If you need to infer that you are so passed that in order to avoid becoming overly anxious, I can understand that. But that is also why we have a fundamentalist movement. You're position says I wish to be practical and not stress the details. Well there is a cost to that, which is to ignore the reality that there are problems that are difficult, yet critical to address if we are to progress. And not to progress becomes increasingly costly because existence for an organism as "successful" as human beings is that they cannot take for granted endless clean water, clean air, and must contend with an overheated world, more globalized economies, pandemics... The answer is not to ignore these things. They are complex, but solvable problems. Bayes theorem and neural network approaches take a beginning and an ending to create increasingly approximate models.
      Your talk when you took out the brain model was not consistent with what we know now. When you held the cerebellum, you were referring to the hind brain incorrectly. If you don't want to sweat the details, perhaps that serves your needs, but it does not make you as effective as if you knew the facts. This is why something is missing in your solution to OCD. Not worrying about it is not necessarily the solution. The whole thing is about accepting yourself as valued despite your imperfection, yet not simply giving up on precision. I can work on precision and accept that it is for the joy of learning and not a "compulsion" to justify my existence and my value as a human being. The love of learning.... You lack of making this explicit is the concern. Non-linearity does not mean one cannot approximate sufficiently to approach an adequate solution. Our intuitive brain is non-linear. Our declarative brain is linear. But even spear throwers learn to hit a fleeing wildebeest despite that being a non-linear problem. You're missing the point (pun).

    Is it common that i have disgust thoughts about people going to toilet and such things that it causes drop of my motivation to meet women cause i imagine them having to use toilet and such things? In that case how to overcome that and get motivation? (maybe im depleted by addictions to have less motivation in first place) Science now knows that disgust can be almost as big as anxiety in ocd.

      Disgust is a real thing - but it is also a programmed thing. The first day a person works at the sewage works it is disgusting, two years later they find it normal. So we mustn't use disgust as an excuse - it is a conditioning of the mind. Don't wait for motivation, action towards your goals is the best form of motivation, not waiting for a good feeling or a happy story in your mind.       They may help to calm you down or quieten your mind but that is not addressing the issue. Your anxiety and OCD are the symptom, not the problem, the drugs will try to fix your symptoms but they will not fix the problem.
      The problem is that you are worrying too much about everything, feeling responsible for everything and stressing out your own inner chemistry. When you learn to see life differently, let go of control and live in the now, rather than the past or the future, your mind will calm down, then your body will calm down, then your anxiety (which is a symptom) will go away!
      Don't try to get rid of anxiety - become the person where anxiety cannot thrive.
      Embrace vulnerability, let go of your stories and be creative.

      sweety devotional songs rose I get nervous with the medications they have these days... I feel like they are a cover up of what’s going on... like Mr John said we have to understand how to live life differently that should calm the mind once you have a piece of mind it hopefully will help us!

      There is a place for medication to suppress anxiety and (maybe) temporarily lift depression. However, the real problem is with how you think, behave, worry and live your life. Unless you change these you won't be able to get yourself free and meds won't change those aspects of your self. The only real caveat is perhaps a "normal" person who is experiencing depression after trauma in their life and they just need something to get them through a temporary trauma.
      Some antipsychotic drugs do calm a person down, but they also zombify them - so it is quite a balancing act.
      I don't have a problem with meds as long as you are working on yourself and your life at the same time.

      Anxiety & OCD Discernment can you please tell me . I been struggling with anxiety for a while and it grew in to violent OCD and depression. I constantly feel bad ahs have horrible thoughts and feelings , I feel like I am going insane . Is that possible?? Sometimes I feel like I am not my self and so on . How to I get over it . I took meds for a while bit as soon as get off them o have everything comes back . So I don’t want to be on meds. How do I get rid of these horrible feelings and Thoughts of me going in sane. Pleas help

    If you look closely the "observer" is just another feeling or thought.You can't have the "observer" and a thought/feeling/emotion in the exact same instance.Its one thought/feeling/emotion at a time/in the same instance.That doesn't mean I'm denying the capability of self awareness in us of course not.But "observing your own thoughts" is more of a practical concept formulated by mystics/spiritualists/contemplatives etc., you will see that doesn't literally happen when you investigate your mind properly.

      You are going down the wrong rabbit hole my friend - stop trying to use logic against ocd, because ocd only has the intellect of an 8 year old - when you can see this is true... surprising things happen. Watch the third video and get back to me :-)

      @@TakeResponsibilityforYOURLife I did watch the video and I do admit that the idea of observing your own thoughts serves a practical purpose and is helpful. I was just simply stating that that's not what really happens. That fact has nothing to do with the self management of OCD.Of course if logic could treat OCD we wouldn't have a problem in the first place.

      Well, that's what you think and I respect that. Interestingly, the point you are making was the same argument I used 25 years ago, whilst I was trapped in my own OCD nightmare. However, I did the research, I tried everything, I worked for 13 years as an OCD therapist, I reprogrammed my unconscious mind and I escaped! have been totally calm for 20 years. But why does excitement due to a good news feel positive and panic feel negative, even though at a physiological level both result in palpitations. The story in your head does matter right?

      If you stand in front of a dog and make happy sounds, the dog wags its tail. If you make anxious scared noises, the dog becomes anxious. Your unconscious mind is doing the same, your brain which sits in darkness is scanning your "noises" (thoughts and body reactions) to guess what is happening you on the outside. Excitement and fear are pretty much the same things - except one has a good story and one a bad story in your mind. My video 3 should make this easier to understand. John

      Well, to me, the DSM is just a way to group symptoms into a label that can be called a diagnosis - but that has nothing to do with overcoming the underlying causes of those symptoms in the first place. I am interested in what the person can do to manage, reverse or reframe that condition so a calmer and happier life is possible.

      I am sure many vitamins are good for the body and brain, but they won't stop your OCD type thinking, your controlling behaviour and the resulting anxiety in your body. These are changed by learning how thoughts work, retraining the brains amygdala and learning to see life differently - you could call this group of behaviours exposure therapy?       I watched the video and he is not fixed from his OCD problems! I don't know about any of these herbs or supplements and I think they are trying to offer an "external' solution - rather than following an "internal' path to changing yourself, the way you think internally and your behaviours. Because if you change how you think and behave, you will change your life's outcomes and your internal chemistry - and this is how I believe you can eliminate anxiety and depression. John

    I was following okay until the evolution thing. Again I realise he said here is a scientific perspective to look at to understand and you can do your own research if you like. I appreciate that he mentioned this.
    Not everybody confidently believes in evolution. I am definitely not sold on evolutional theory. Although I believe in adaptation and the fact that they are multiple species we haven't even heard of, Evolution (no matter how much it's explained to me) does not add up. It is a theory based on some very logical thoughts in doctrine however their gaps in it that I cannot use to excuse my behaviour. Science does not have an answer for everything but it looks for answers. The point where science is not able to give an answer is the point where choice or belief comes into play. This is why I can't allow myself to use evolution as an excuse to believe I have no control over my thoughts, behaviour or my feelings. I would definitely say I have little control: however, our individual desires are just as real as the ground we walk on. If it were all chalked up to our animal subconscious instinct we would all act the same in the same situations or in the same environments. No one person lives the same life and it affects the outcome of their behavioral response. I just cannot see how there is a 1 way fits all because of animalistic evolutional instincts.
    Science comes credibly close to explaining a lot of the unexplainable; however, theory is not fact. There is factual science I completely agree with but I can't give the same credit to theoretical science. Evolutional theory is still arguable. Regardless, I can validate at least half of what hes saying as sound knowledge rather than belief. I do have to say I appreciate the approach. He made it very easy to want to understand and listen to. I still look forward to what he has to say continuing on.

      Thank you for your feedback. I hear what you are saying. I try to sit in the middle, in my course, I often say the following "What I am saying here is not necessarily the truth, but it is a model you can use to quieten your mind and find calmness in your body." It is like having a soul, I can't prove if I do and I can't prove if I don't have a soul - however, I like the 'model' of living my life as if I do have one - as this allows me to not fear death.
