  • Tires for your Sportster are not cheap but a great way to save money is to carry in your wheels. Changing tires isn't an easy job and even I have a shop do my tires. Removing your own wheels you can get a tire change for as little as $25. You can skip the labor charge of having the shop remove your wheel and change the tire if you do it yourself. The charge to remove a wheel and reinstall for a tire change can be at least an hour of labor at the shop rate. Shop rates can be anywhere from $50 to well over $100, add the price of 1 let alone 2 tires and it gets expensive quick. With the a good lift and some simple tools it's not a hard job to save some money by doing part of it yourself.

    Do you remove your own wheels for tire changes or have it all done at a shop?

    • @hellishgrin4604
      @hellishgrin4604 4 года назад +2

      yep, mostly because I don't like having to wait for them if I ride up and they can't do it within an hour. The shop I go to is about 20 minutes away compared to the one down the street, but they don't charge me for anything other than the tire. I forget exactly how they do it, but if a tire costs $109, you pay $109. Which is the same within $4 of what the tire would cost online before shipping or tax. Is there tax on tires?

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +2

      Yeah tires are ridiculous, you get taxed, charged a disposal fee and an enviromental fee.

      I usually do but the last time I went to have my tire changed and brought my own tire the shop owner was a little upset because I didn't buy the tire from him. I got my wheel back with the new tire and discovered that my rotor was bent. This guy was supposed to be a friend to because he had done work on my bikes before and we had known each other for years. I just bought a new rotor and let it go. I haven't talked to him since.

    Make sure they put the tire on the correct direction of travel. Shop I used for first time put it on back wards and had to drive all they way back over a hr to get them to correct it.

    I use my local Harley guru to fix my tires , I used Shinko tyres and they are very soft and grippy but you don’t get many miles off them , changed to Avon chrome cobras and they are super good 💪🏻🐍

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +1

      Roughly how many miles are you getting out of your Shinkos?

    • @stinde666
      @stinde666 4 года назад +1

      GixxerFoo hmm I’d say approximately 10-12 thousand kilometres from the rear but over 10000 km from the front still have it on , they are cheap but you go through two rears in time of one Avon or Michelin , fronts last longer, and I’m a easy rider no burning but lots of good twisties 😀

    Getting it off.. the easy part. Putting it back on.. not the easy part. Keeping the spacers in will be the challenge. Worked for a shop doing them on all Harleys. Thats how i know. + i do all my own tire changes. Really it's not bad.

    • @GixxerFoo

  • @hellishgrin4604
    @hellishgrin4604 4 года назад +3

    Shinkos are actually okay tires for their price range. If I had a project bike, I'd definitely run a pair of those if needed, hard to argue with Michelins though. There's something about new tires that just make you feel confident while riding.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +1

      It made a night and day difference on my bike, I forgot how well it used to ride lol. I've heard great things about Shinko, but then I've heard some horror stories that were really bad. Bubbles and separation, really scary stuff with the pictures to prove it.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 года назад +1

      I've heard more good things than bad about those tires, l hear they are soft and grippy. I am probably gonna get a set next time around. Done with shops doing tires for me.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 года назад +1

      Shop mounted my tire backwards 🤦‍♂️. I figured couple hundred in tools and do my own tires, l could of done front and rear Shinkos after just the rear tire this last time.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 года назад +1

      Lol oh yeah they fixed it, luckily it was a carry in and l didn't make it but a couple blocks. I figure I'll invest in the tools and just run Shinko, l really prefer doing front and rear at the same time or close to it.

    I remove and refit my wheels, change the tyre myself and never bother balancing wheels afterwards as I have cast wheels.... I get tyres delivered from the cheapest I can find but always use Avons..... got Roadriders on the Sporty at the moment but my go back to Cobras. As for grip or milage, well grip wins out for me and I think Avons have the edge because of wet weather grip. I did a few years ago fit a Maxxis rear to my Streetbob( over 120 bhp) but it was undersize as far as width was concerned, really grippy form the start but it was gone in 3k miles.....

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  4 года назад +1

      Doing it yourself like that is the way to go! Avon makes a very nice tire, l used to run those on my flat track bike. Lol what were you doing to only get 3k out of a tire?!

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 года назад +1

      It depends on the shop, l was able to order the tire online and take it and have it put on for 45 bucks. So between the tire savings and doing a carry in about 100 bucks. 200 bucks not going to the dealer for it all.
