- Trains at Sydney Central station, as seen in March 1991.
Also buskers and more...
Mostly filmed over the weekend, but with just hours to go before my flight home on Monday morning I made a special trip back to see the red trains with hand operated doors - and was rewarded by being able to film the 'Zoo' train, plus others...
Enjoy!
Loved the V-sets when they had gold tinted windows. Also the blue goose livery was a blast from the past.
The scenes from within Central were great as well....so much seating. Last time I went to central (about 1mth ago) there was no seating at all in the main concourse....terrible
Too true! Central is awful now. No little shops anymore, either. No real solid places to eat. Just awful, horrible terminal, real shame.
Agreed about the V sets mate. I absolutely loved going down the South Coast on those trains.
yeah remember that gold tint as a kid... damm had long forgotten about them ones... and use to hear the old "red rattlers" from the old home in beverly hills just before they fazed out.
Old CityRail
How would you know which ones had the 70s bank green seats or the 70's Copperart orange seats?
I used to love those red semi circular platform seats as a kid.
I wasn't even born when this video was made, but I would absolutely love to travel back to this time and just see society 20+ years ago. No smartphones, no gigantic tablets, laptops. The internet was just beginning to break through, a few months later Nirvana was gonna make it big, damn.
Quarker omg lol same! Would love to go to the rail network in the 90s! :)
i loved these trains back in the early 90s, seats where very comfy and was a great sleep to lithgow and back.....hehe, loved sitting on the big orange horse shoe seats at central too, :) i miss the 90s. GrUnGe........ ; )
This video bought back quite a few memories, I had often changed through Central from the blue mountains to get to St Leonards during 1990 1991 when doing a course, remember leaving St Leonards at 6:10 to get the 6:52 Lithgow service on platform 10. Done this every day from August 1990 to June 1991.
Some maybe aware that Martin Place train station is about to be demolished and reworked as a new train / lite rail hub. The station itself still intact is very 1980s, again a place I'm rather sentimental of, I undertook my first clerical courses and temps in the late 80s around there. The above video was the inspiration for me taking some film of Martin Place before all that lovely 80s decor is gone. Got some good sweeps, but was asked to stop filming. I guess with terrorism and international threats nowadays, what you did back then now wouldn't be possible. I'll post my footage of Martin Place soon hopefully for prosperity. :)
What the hell... It's so weird seeing rooms and platforms that I've been on many times, back in 1991. It's like I can't believe this places existed before I was born.
Even more so when remnant’s of older years are still used, despite not having a ticketing system anymore, my local station still uses the old turntable doors that go straight to the platform you need during schooling hours. (Pretty crafty idea to be fair since we all know school kids love to crowd anywhere)
Complete with cityrail era warning signs.
love that red InnerCity XPT from '88...
I was a bit young to remember them (much).
Great video & scenes I remember well. Though the rot from Baird & Griener had already been cast by this time assisted by their hired help at Booz Allen & Hamilton. The North Coast loco hailed trains already gone, DEB sets & the Main South loco hauled trains already on the cards for replacement. At least it wasn't a complete Tangara-fest by this stage though. I miss the H sets a lot.
Fascinating video! I was a 4-5 y.o back in 1991 and utterly obsessed with trains. Watching this is bringing back so many memories... Great to see
Really loved the 1990s
The good days, The pouplation was down, No standing in trains I was 11 when you filmed this lol, God this city has changed...
Great video mate!!!
Grant Goldman with the PA's!!! Hell yeah
SYD looks nice back then. i dream of visiting.
I miss the white/red/orange & blue Grey liverys on the V-sets, brings me back memories when i was in high school going to work as a kid flipping patties at MacDonald's. Saw them V-sets just go at 120 KM/H. Good days back then. Now the trains have too much yellow on the doors and on the front of the trains.
This video was recorded 13 years before I was born... Very different colour scheme and trains (so many S Sets) in comparison to our trains today and Goldy doing the voices for the PA. That is awesome
This was filmed before I was born. Finally, I hear an Aussie accent on the speakers!
Wow this stuff belongs in museum! :)
city circle via Museum?
@@smophie6260 you missed the pun.
Truly amazing footage 🙏🏻
Trains have changed so much since then! I hardly see intercity trains in that shape anymore ( the V sets? I’m bad with train types.) and those have since gotten a makeover!
Ouh, that must have hurt! Anyway, I have seen some photos in the red rattlers but not many! I also want to ride a 620/720 railcar! I regret that I didn't use my 11 years chance!. I also never saw the orange V set seats so I am glad about that too! I wish I could go back to thhe '90's so I can joy ride trains!
Oh I remember this! When I was young I used to see people smoking and sometimes I would go into the smoking carriage to get away from the crowdiness of non - smoking carriages!
I am so obssessed with trains too! I thought I was the only one that loved trains, and my friends used to say yeah we know you love trains, and they always ask me about train and where to go interchages etc. I tell them to go to the south line cos there is a lot of new trains there, the waratahs are seemingly replacing the millenium trains, they even today ask me about trains still. Well at least I'm not alone in the "train world":)
wudzlolz Millenniums are actually still running. Less common than Waratahs though.
Gezz,Central station has changed heaps in 29 yrs.
People seemed more friendly then.
Great video and I've rode a v set from Granville to Parramatta in 2002 they were cramped and lack seating in the vestibule in the cab car along with high temperatures on the hvac system. Only the T set beats them on suburban runs since they have vestibule seating.
5:35 - I loved those round seats at Central as a kid.
5:35
Back In the good old days when you could buy tickets at stations and when the fleet was actually new
And not to mention that fleet was a proper Australian fleet, not like nowadays with some 103 8-car sets of people-movers built in China.
BanksfielderIdiot2176 Ah yes, those goddamn Waratahs.
@cityraildude the tangaras did have destinations indicators built in but were never used
This is such an amazing video video!
Miss the Blue Goose and Candy livery.
Sick of Blue and Gold now :(
Yeah…
I dont mind blue and gold but i wish there was a mixture
To me these will always be the Newcastle to Sydney Trains
Ahhh the greatness. Back when every train was worth the ride... Not a single Waratrash in sight.
Waratah
True
Yes
Another thing worth mentioning comparing then to now...look at all the food outlets on central station ! Apart from lack of seating, we couldn't find anywhere at all to have a snack at Central 1mth ago. The Hungry Jacks was closed due to a fire admittedly...so we had to go down the escalator to Eddy Ave for anything resembling food.
In that video...there are snack bars everywhere...hell, there is a couple as soon as you go throguh the ticket gate after getting off a train. and they say progress is better.....not in this case :(
This station not all that long ago operated a restauarant for the convenience of its passengers. Located to the right of where the Burger King franchised outlet is or was.Convenience, service and passengers - words not often used by railway operators in the anglosphere today - let alone in the same sentence.
@cityraildude A camshaft is a motor used in the DCMs/DCTs, DIMs/DITs(some) & L, R and S sets.
A lot less busy back then and hardly any foreigners as well. If you go to Central these days, there are people everywhere, platforms are full and hardly any Australians.
i think population over growth is the problem, not the amount of "NON AUSTRALIANS" that are in Sydney. I love how multicultural this country is
@FilmThemesAndScenes I can't really agree or disagree with anyone because everyone on RUclips is entitled to their own opinion 👌
are foreigners supposed to be a bad thing
@FilmThemesAndScenes To the Aboriginal Australians the British were foreigners and they ignored them and kind of mass murdered them. Be glad you aren't living in that time. Anyone has the right to live anywhere.
@FilmThemesAndScenes Asians only make up 14% though. Just accept you're ignorantly biased against other races.
@cityraildude All V-sets have had their upholstery changed to green seats. Back in the day, the green seat cars were the older sets, and the orange were newer. You could easily tell the difference on the power car as the green seats ones had the blue livery (blue goose) while the orange seat ones had the red/orange/yellow livery (candy). All the orange seat V-sets had vertical lights inside, whereas the oldest green seat cars had horizontal.
2:59 - Strange these seats had no cloth.
k sets were still there wow there older than i thought
K sets were introduced between 1981-1985.
Can someone tell my what the different colored “front and end” of the trains is?
I miss the red rattlers because of the open doors!
+Benjamin Kang Oh ok but i'm not missing them because of the design and the potential danger of falling out despite the train has an deadman system.
Benjamin Kang They were retired due to the introduction of the Tangara. Red Rattlers only lasted 3-4 more years after the Tangara fleet first started rolling into service.
ahhh train carriages with no graffiti
90's
@knightman1970
Why didn't the tangaras use their destos?
ahhhhhhh the tangaras have not changed
lots of 4 cars trains back then. Do they just break up a 8 cars trains into 2 and each has its own lives in the weekend?
sorry I do not know, but assume that this was the situation.
No. Today, they are always on 2 4 car sets and for the newer Waratah trains, they are full eight car trains. But it depends on the line and service though.
Was just wondering out of curiosity if anyone knew, the Red Rattler trains, did they have asbestos brakes in them as asbestos was the norm for brake friction material around those times?
@hqrsyd The trains could be empty because most of my filming was at the evenings and the weekend. I tried to avoid busy times as I wanted to film the trains and not the passengers (who just get in the way... like last Sunday when filming a special train here in London and the shot was ruined by someone walking right in front of the camera)
@cityraildude re: the 'rattler' trains, have you ever seen inside one of them? Film 4 looks inside a single deck carriage. Hopefully this will be uplifted to youtube within a week from now.
I dont recall seeing any destos (destination displays, I assume) on the Tangaras. I do recall walking into one whilst looking in a different direction and banging my head of the grabrail thingy hanging from the ceiling. OUCH! it hurt!.
I do recall vividly that the Tangara trains were the first in Sydney to use destination boards. Coming from Melbourne, and born April 10, 1970, I traveled to Sydney regularly in the Dec - Jan summers of 1987/88, 1988/89, 1989/90, 1990/91, 1991/92 & 1993/94. I presume the advent of destination boards on Tangaras eventually saw the wholesale fitting onto the Comeng and Goninan - built double deck trains as part of the Citydecker, etc, programs. I still have the photos I took at that time. Great video here.
Could anyone explain the Zig Zag shop at Central, was it affiliated with the Railway based in the Lithgow ?
Tangara's and Rattle's ran at the same time?
Yes they did :) . They were gradually phasing out the red sets during the 90's
The echo of the tangara t set doors closing time is very loud
Do they still have the V sets with the orange seats? If so, how can you tell the difference between the ones that do and don't?
What were the trains with the funny fronts called at roughly 14 minutes? not the xpt the red ones just after it. they had a circular front
The one at 14:30? They were known as a 900/800 class railcar, also known as DEB sets.
how fast does the tangara start accelerating after the doors close at 7:18!
That is because trains back then had no traction interlocking.
@@nah_144 yeah
I thought C sets will be no longer in use at 2010. Now 2011 whats going on?
No graffiti on the trains! Amazing!
I was born in '95 so I never got to ride a rattler :( :( :( I wish to one day. Anyway, things have changed alot in the past 2 decades. Did the tangaras use their destos back then?
Someone told me that the blue livery V sets was used the south coast line, and the red/orange/yellow livery V sets was used the newcastle/blue mountains line... is that true???
Yes sadly it's only a matter of time before the old S Sets are gone completely I also noticed they only have the Millenium Sets and the Waratah Sets and also the C sets but not many Tangaras down Campbelltown way.
Craig Mitchell38 Tangara sets have mostly become nonexistent down there because they’re now all gallavanting off on the Illawarra Line!
0:42 THE BLUE GOOSE V SET :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I remember as i kid on several red rattlers would have sparks come from the wheel & axle area, So dodgy!
I'm going to miss the Tin Cans
Watching in 2021😊
Thanks. Is there something about the future that you know that I do not???
I just wish I'd stayed a day or two longer... and filmed even more!
But back in 1991 who knew of RUclips and how we use the Internet nowadays?
Simon
I have been on City Rail since I was 5 to 6...
Back when the Tangara was the new wow train
Really WOW !!!....
1987-1995
I like to go back in time at 1988 when the Tangaras where on service
Tangara's are still in service.
Enri More They still remain in service today, just now with yellow highlights and refreshed interiors. Quite a huge difference from what they were back in 1988.
On the V sets?
7:10 A. Geez those doors closed fast, B, Why were there silver Handel things on there
Hi there, can I ask permission to use this footage in a film clip for my song City rail please and thanks?
That was S,L,R sets they mentioned...... the non airconed sets, which is suppose to happen in 2010, but they starting to remove them now, and any leftovers will be made into 8 car S sets, then they remove them in 2014 or whatever
Welcome to the future, when it's 2018 and they're still not gone. Should be gone be next year.
Wow...... a lot of 4 cars sets back then..... and what set's would often be 4 cars
Did the guy say the train on platform 17 was going to New Zealand at 7:55?
alex9991 lol
It’s says museum But it really does sound like it says New Zealand that’s why they changed the voice
Good to see Vsets still in Blue Goose scheme
I'm going to miss the S sets. I already miss the red rattlers! Cityrail, please please stop torturing me because I love catching these old non airconditioned trains, even though i tell my friends to go on the new trains, but my secret personally is that I like the old non airconditioned trains better.
they are the 900 class railcars, most commonly known as DEB sets
God. I born in 1998 Before Rattlers Gone. (born in england scotland UK) i haven't ride on rattlers and i wish all old trains comes back.
that man is good at playing the Lambada
The reason why the doors open and close when the train is moving is bc it didn't have traction interlocking. the Sydney trains we see now are much smoother.
(I loved the olden days Sydney trains)
My username is made up
I've seen this elsewhere too
Oh how i miss those day of Red rattlers
@ForzaIV
What in the hell is a camshaft?
@unuselessness Good question.... I dunno; she must have seen me filming and decided that she wanted to be filmed too!
What song is this on 4:20
GoldenPNMRailfan/ROBLOX&Elevators Entertainment Llorando Se Fue
Blue Goose?
10:32 - Oh yes, the old "red rattlers" at work.
Oh.. that.. hurts...
the doors shut then the driver starts moving when they were still closing now they shut then wait then go
Wow that was a surprise i never realised how huge the trains are. Not like London at all.
Nope, I don't think that was the case. Not in the years that I've lived the Blue Mountains and then the Central Coast (Newcastle line).
Tangaras still going strong in 2021
My FAVOURITE train
@jascokovacevic Yes they certainly did.
@unuselessness Nothing Change's what you see in 1991 it'll be the Same in 2001 and 2011 so all that'll change is a fresh coat of paint (ie grafitti) So it 2021 it'll still look the same as it did in 1991, Central station is like a time capsule, Funnily enoguh I was only 5 in 1991 but those red round seats at around 5.40 I still remember clearly
Man that women at 3:33 was tots lol
car 2 V Set in the background,Blue Goose front,and last power car to!!
@cooky2304
What ever, it's still in my life!
@cooky2304
Oh okay! Wait 8-10 years ago, so they were around in my life time but I never one :C
Now the metro is gonna takeover
@cityraildude no idea mate
oh how sydney changes hah
and the seat now are green
SydneyAirportCapturer HL actually they are purple
Actually they are blue if you're colour blind.
@@glenstransportvideos That comment is from 2012/2013; SydneyAirportCapturer HL was talking about the V Sets right BEFORE Sydney Trains was ever a thing. The seats were indeed green and the end walls inside was either yellow or a wood grain-ish sort of deal, depending on what type of V Set is involved; a DIM/DIT car, a DJM/DJT car, etc. None of this purple-train business back in the day.
@knightman1970
Oh okay!
Would I be able to use this as filmclip for my song City Rail? soundcloud.com/welikerecords/city-rail
@slugnbozo
Okay!
